The Rangers?

That’s Vic Hadfield of the NY Rangers with Gary Bergman (and Floyd Smith) in pursuit for the Detroit Wheels. Hadfield came to the Rangers via the Intra-League draft in 1961. However, the blueshirts didn’t learn from the experience (Hadfield was a big part of the Rangers for over a decade) because throughout their history the club pursues name brands with little regard for the future.

I think there’s a deal to be made between the Oilers and Rangers this summer. The two teams have done lots of business before and will likely do so again (I’m hoping it is in the next three months). Glen Sather is still in charge (despite some crazy eyebrows and even crazier transactions) and the Oilers have some people he’d be interested in (specifically Sheldon Souray).

New York has some cap issues, but those things may fade quickly. According to this article, Olli Jokinen may be headed for the KHL. Jokinen is a UFA this summer, so the club has 5.2M free and clear to begin shopping for a replacement or another big ticket item to address needs elsewhere on the roster. The Rangers have some nice items on their roster and Edmonton has welcomed many NYR draft picks and prospects over the years. Notables include Doug Weight, Todd Marchant and several others acquired by Sather when he was Oilers GM.

Is it too much to dream? Sather helping another Oiler rebuild? Well, he’s been doing wonky stuff for awhile now and the Rangers never did learn the lesson of Vic Hadfield.
