The NHL tipped its hand last night: the Toronto Maple Leafs will make the playoffs! And if they get help like they did last night, they could win the Stanley! The Ryan Smyth “no goal” and the Joff Lupul “catch and release” won the day for the Toronto’s.
The Smyth goal was especially galling since it came early in the game and would have given the Oilers a one goal lead. Bad positioning by the ref was put to good use for the league when the goal was called off, and the Lupul catch just added to the fury.
Credibility took a holiday for hockey’s best league last night. I don’t believe you can frame the issue any other way. Toronto may have won this game without the help, but the race for the playoffs is apparently too close for comfort. I encourage NHL fans to watch Toronto games closely for the rest of the season: the game is afoot!
