WHO’S NEXT?

The trade deadline is 39 days away and we’ll see a few recalls to Edmonton over the final weeks of the 2014-15 season. Trades, injuries and ‘getting a look’ at some expiring RFA contracts could all contribute to the names we see over the next few weeks. Here’s a quick look at some of the names we may see before season’s end.

  • R Iiro Pakarinen, 36GP, 16-11-27. RFA 2016: He’s the most likely player to be called up but there doesn’t seem to be a player at his position heading out of town. Eberle, Purcell, Yakupov and new hire Klinkhammer are all in the NHL and likely to remain. Injuries may contribute.
  • D Martin Marincin 24GP, 0-6-6 RFA 2015. I think the Oilers will retain him but am unsure about a recall. Marincin’s punishment this season is extremely similar to Theo Peckham’s and there’s a chance they trade him or allow him to sign in Europe while retaining his rights. There’s a fracture here, would give money to know what he said, and to whom.
  • C-L-R Andrew Miller, 40gp, 15-19-34 RFA 2015: Miller has been playing well over the last month and with Arcobello gone there may be an opportunity. The Oilers may want to get a look at him and Miller can play multiple positions. I’m not sure he’s seen as an NHL option by the Oilers.
  • D Brad Hunt, 27gp, 8-19-27 RFA 2015: I think the Oilers have him surrounded but they may call him up when Petry is dealt and Nikitin is moved to right side. He certainly helps the power play.
  • D Brandon Davidson 28gp, 2-4-6 RFA 2015. They like him
  • L Curtis Hamilton 36gp, 8-12-20 RFA 2015. Hamilton took forever to show an offensive pulse but it appears to have arrived. If he were in the Detroit system one suspects he would be viewed as a prospect, I’m not sure how the Oilers feel about him.
  • D Jordan Oesterle 41gp, 5-14-19 RFA 2016. Puck-moving defender has some chaos in his game but there’s no doubt he can also help offensively. College man, his progress this season must have been noticed.
  • C Bogdan Yakimov 37gp, 6-10-16 RFA 2017. Big man probably needs this and next season in the AHL but the Oilers don’t waste time with guys they like and this is a MacT selection. That may contribute to another cup of coffee this season.
  • R Steve Pinizzotto 13gp, 1-9-10 UFA 2015. He played well enough in the NHL to stay in my opinion, not sure if he gets another chance. These guys sometimes cash in with a solid Euro contract, KHL situation may change that option.
  • D Dillon Simpson 38gp, 2-7-9 RFA 2017. Quietly playing himself up the depth chart and these college men usually step forward in their first 100 AHL games (or less). It’s tough to know what the organization feels about him but it wouldn’t surprise me if he gets a cup of coffee.
  • G Laurent Brossoit 22gp, 2.62 .915 RFA 2016. A recent shoddy effort has his numbers hurting but this has been a strong season for the goalie. Edmonton may want to reward him down the stretch with a cup of coffee.
  • L Josh Winquist 16gp, 4-4-8 unsigned. This is an interesting item to follow, Edmonton needs to make a decision on him before the off season. He’s improved and moved up the depth chart and I think he gets a contract. Will he play in the NHL this season? Unlikely.

Jordan Oesterle is kicking my ass, Dillon Simpson is about right and Pakarinen has already reached the RE. Rookies who aren’t getting (or weren’t getting) enough playing time to match the projections include Bogdan Yakimov, Mitchell Moroz and Jujhar Khaira. I did predict Winquist would have success.

Among veterans, I’m liking Miller, Hunt, Hamilton and Pinizzotto for covering the bet.

RE 2014-15 GOALIES

  1. Richard Bachman 40GP, 2.75 .915
  2. Laurent Brossoit 20GP, 3.00 .902
  3. Ty Rimmer 10GP, 2.90 .907
  4. Frans Tuohimaa 3GP, 3.33 .899
  5. Tyler Bunz 3GP 3.66 .885

Brossoit is killing it now, Bachman too. Opposite of NHL goaling this season. Barons play tonight, I’ll update as we roll.

    3 power-play goals and 10 power-play assists among his 27 points.

  5. Pouzar says:

Nice 4on 4 ozone possession by Yak2 with the defender draped all over him. Sets up Miller for a nice chance.

  6. godot10 says:

    1) McDavid, Eichel, Hanifan…in that order. #JustSayNoah to anymore else if the Oilers pick third.
    2) Zach Werenski attends Jack Johnson’s university, and Cogliano’s university. Michigan succeeds based on pure talent, and there is very little “development” going on. Hanifan >> Werenski
    3) I haven’t decided between Marner or Strome if the Oilers pick #4. The Oilers are likely to pass only Buffalo and Arizona, and even that will be tough if Petry gets traded. So slipping to #4 is about a coin flip. Arizona will likely lean skilled forward over D. So even if the OIlers slip to #4, Hanifan will probably still be there because if Arizona is #3 they probably take Marner or Strome.

  7. Pouzar says:

Pretty sloppy period by OKC. Need to stop watching and get the legs goin. Lucky to be tied 0-0.

    Lowetide: 3 power-play goals and 10 power-play assists among his 27 points.

Means eff-all at the NHL level, if you play at an AHL 2nd pairing level defensively.

If the Oilers sign Laleggia to an NHL contract, I doubt that Hunt gets qualified. Hunt career will be as a highly paid offensive specialist at the AHL level. Brad Hunt…meet Bryan Helmer.

Matheson says the Oilers like Blackwood (awesome name).

“The Oilers, along with about 10 NHL teams, have high interest in Jack Eichel’s Boston University teammate, free agent Matt O’Connor, the six-foot-six goaltender, but they also like Barrie’s MacKenzie Blackwood, who played in the top prospects game. The Oilers heavily pursued college free agent Eric Hartzell (Quinnipiac) a couple of years ago, but he signed with the Pittsburgh Penguins, where he’s buried in their organization.”

MM: How come Hunt made the team ahead of me?

Oiler Brass: I find your lack of faith disturbing.

MM: And why is Nikitin playing ahead of me?

Really wonder how Crouse would show in Junior with either Sam Bennett playing or on a different team.

I am not High on Crouse but he has extremely high cache and when that many scouts like him there is usually quality there.

Picking him around 15 to 25 seems more appropriate at this point though.

Hate the saying “he could play In the NHL on a 4th line right now”

You do not draft a 1st rounder on that fact.

He’s actually having a very good year, but on a very deep team. Roy is a two-way player posting 3.68/60 that’s damn good.

The big time offensive players like Duclair, Timashov, Gauthier and Erne are impacting Roy (and Tkachev). Loaded up for Mem Cup. I don’t think he’s a suspect at all

    Agreed….

but this occasions a few of its own questions: why isn’t Roy knocking someone off the depth chart above him ( it may be that the new kids on the team aren’t getting used as much because trust)

And, is this something the Oilers are even aware of? i.e., who knows what metrics they use to evaluate their prospects… but I’m guessing it isn’t eP/60.

Sounds a bit lefty, but couldn’t they make a $20,000 donation to the last pick’s choice of charity. Talk about a glass of water for a drowning man.

Or at least make it an F-Type Jag.

The time on ice stats are out of whack some players. Some on the low side, some on the high side
    Quebec team
Leading scorer of the team is only getting 9.3 minutes per game? So his points/60 is 9.3!
2nd leading scorer is getting 11.1 minutes per game. A points/60 of 7.3.

Gretzky at 23 minutes a night in 80 games in 1982 got 8.68/60.

There are a handful of players in each league averaging over 30 minutes a game. Ehlers is almost at 34 mins. There are probably some nights some players go over 30 minutes but to average that?

Roy being one of the better players and playing mostly center, Id expect 13 mins a night is low.

I wouldn’t put too much weight on Roy’s TOI.

Actually, in reading the comment I can’t see anything close to getting lit up. Pretty respectful from what I can see.

  39. frjohnk says:

Ran the TOI numbers for the Roys team.

Unless they play with 3 forwards for 6 minutes a game
and with 2 forwards for 54 minutes a game

    The estimated TOI are low.

My guess is that he is the 2nd line center ( according to hockey db, he is 2nd in overall points for a center on the team) getting 18-19 mins a game.

This would put his points/60 are 3.

    Still decent.

I think Roy is in the cluster of Chase, Houck and Platzer.

Any team would be happy to have those guys as prospects.
