OILERS SIGN LALEGGIA!

The Edmonton Oilers have signed college star Joey Laleggia to an entry level deal. The young puck moving defenseman is famous for his NCAA career and has made it known (most recently via Guy Flaming’s Pipeline Show on TSN1260) that his plan after college was to sign with Edmonton and turn pro. Laleggia is a highly-regarded prospect in many circles (including this blog, where he was ranked No. 14 prospect in the winter rankings). I wrote the following at that time:

  • Joey Laleggia is an undersized defender with impressive offensive ability. He plays in a strong college conference and has been successful during his four years in Denver. The Oilers would certainly have interest (Dilks mentioned Laleggia turned down a contract in the summer) and Laleggia might fast track his way to the NHL. However, as a lefty defender, he must also realize that the presence of Darnell Nurse, Oscar Klefbom, Martin Marincin and Dillon Simpson makes his job a tough one. The biggest positive? His skill set is unique in that group and may be the key to his success. If he doesn’t sign in Edmonton, Laleggia should have no trouble finding a good landing place.

I remember watching him with Penticton when I was calling games in the BCHL. Smooth as silk and a real competitor with a terrific shot. He played at a similar level to Schultz if not more polished I thought… but obviously his size was a factor in how long it took him to get here. He’s a talent for sure.

  2. Truth says:

He slides in where, just below Marincin and right above Ference/Nikitin?

    Kidding, sort of.

    Yep. Betker is signed.

Good news on the LaLeggia front.

Tied for 4th in regular season scoring in the NCHC, as a defender. DU had a great team, and Joey L was a key contributor. 37gp – 15g – 25a – 40pts. Comparable offense to Justin Schultz at roughly the same age (although NCHC is likely a tougher conference.)

Best part about LaLeggia? Lefty, but plays both sides.

  6. mumbai max says:

Let’s keep our fingers crossed that the Flames make the playoffs. Cannot stomach the idea of them getting CMD. Only thing worse (toss up) would be the Leafs getting him. Cannot believe I am cheering for both of them down the stretch.

  7. Moose says:

You forgot to add Betker to the 50-man list.

I don’t think the 50-man is going to be as tight as people think given that they’re likely to jettison Lain, Bunz, Tuohimaa, Aulie, Fraser, and, Laleggia probably makes Hunt redundant. Although I could see them bringing him back because that D-corp is going to be young in OKC next year (Nurse, Betker, Laleggia, etc). Or they could go out and get an a vet on an AHL deal to mentor them (the Helmer role). You potentially don’t want Matt O’Connor playing in front of a bunch of first and second year pros every night.

I think they may also have to dump a contract in a deal to make room for some of the young skill (Platzer, Roy, Slepyshev). Too many Ewanyk’s, Kessy’s, Moroz’s and Hamilton’s down there.

  8. Tire Fire says:

Just had a fantastic realization: RTB’s posts are meant to be read as slam poetry. Try it for yourself (from morning thread) :

    Look at the roster.
Find a coach successful with that type of roster!

    Edmonton Oilers!
    young; young; young.

Yeah, I think the issue comes because MacT has tended to sign one of two Euros, too. If you add two of them, plus the junior kids and Roy Sr, plus a goalie or two (because they’ll be replacing Fasth, Bunz and Tuohimaa) it’s going to push the rfa’s good.

I can see EDM walking away from Hunt, Hamilton, Pitlick, Fraser, Lain, Bunz, Tuohimaa.

Exciting prospect. He’s the kind of guy who you can only rank so high (14) because of size concerns given his position, but we should know pretty quickly if the upside is real. I like this kind of prospect because it should be easier to evaluate him now that he’s in the system; at the end of his ELC I expect clarity as to whether he’s worth keeping around or not.

  25. Younger Oil says:

    Just a few thoughts:

1 Happy that we got Laleggia signed. Definitely need more D prospects who can contribute on the scoreboard. I wonder if that will affect Hunt being re-signed.

    2. Speaking of offense from the back end, when was the last time that the Oilers have had 3 Dmen score in the same game? It always ends up being more recently than you think, but it seems like it has been forever.

    3. That 10-5-2 record with Nelson and Hall projects to a 106 point season. Now, by no means is that realistic, but it bodes very well going forward. Even if we go 0-5-1 in the next five games, that would still project to 82 points over a year, and while still not playoff level, a 22 point jump in one year is significant.

    4. I just watched the post game interviews from last night, and the locker room has just changed so much since the arrival of Nelson. Everyone is positive, sticking up for each other, and speaking highly of their teammates. I’m sure it’s winning that makes all the difference, but the more this goes on, the more it shows just how great Nelson is for this team. Eberle, RNH, Yak, and Lander are all putting up points at essentially double the rate that they did under Eakins, all of the players Nelson coached in the AHL are playing like pros, the power play is clicking, and most importantly, everyone is enjoying playing hockey. I think Nelson is our man. Definitely explore other options, but as WG said earlier in the day, it will take someone very special to bump Nelson from the top of the list.

I just read through that ‘blog’ blog from 2008 – amazing how many of the old cats from those days are still around or made lasting contributions. Equally amazing how many readers continue to emerge and contribute in such a wonderful way – Mirtle goes on to write the globe, coachPB and Lord Bob become Derek and Ben Massey of CnB fame/infamy. Bohologo still pops in and provides commentary and translation. Blackdog stops by from time to time, even had an Art Vandelay sighting on that thread (Hi Art!). I wonder how many more will stick around for years and develop that level of history and continuity around these parts? And who is next at turning hockey stories and analytics into a career change? Maybe Woodguy or GMoney gets their work picked up by something/someone bigger?

It’s pretty incredible to see and read those old threads, how much has changed, how much is still exactly the same (beyond the Oilers being terrible). LT, you’ve built a strong community foundation here. You should be really proud.

Nelson’s resume stacks up against Mike Babcock’s, and Willie Desjardins pre-NHL resume AND he has more than twice the experience that Eakins had before he was hired as the Oilers Head Coach. Todd Nelson is as good a candidate as any out there, AND given his familiarity with organization I think he is the best candidate by a mile. If they want to bring Babcock in as GM, that sounds good to me, but I think Todd Nelson is the best candidate for the Head Coach position. Lets see how these last few games play out….. I am not a betting man, but if I was I would put money that he will have at least a .500 record (if there are no more injuries) in the remaining games. I can’t wait to see!

Just read “Blog.” I love baseball, and I love your blog.

You know what you should do…?

Mrs. Lowetide would flip out! 🙂

Do you have an all-time favourite post – one so brilliant/hilarious/outrageous that you simply can’t forget it?

    Lowetide,

I remember your response to Slipper when he posted:

By the end of the year I want to see a second line composed of McDonald, Sesito and Trukhno… fuck that, I want three “scoring lines” with the third made up of Corzanni, Rohlfs and Paukovich; all of them will be scoring at a PPG clip and before each puck drop SaM Gagner will come out in an elf costume and announce into the PA: Merry Fucking Christmas Sugar Tits, hey Rob, go getch yor fucking shine box!!!

    That was 2009.

I can’t find the orginal post by slipper, but found that reference to it.

  51. mattwatt says:

    Lowetide,

My personal favourite blog post Lowetide was the one where, I believe, you talked about the success of Rodgers and Hammerstein and how they made great music together. Then you followed that up by talking about how Lowe and MacTavish were out of tune with each other. Don’t know why, but that post stuck with me for a long time. Damn fine work.

But as a fan of this blog, damn fine work is something I have gotten use to during my daily visit here.

Can’t believe I forgot that. I was literally peeing my pants halfway through and by the time I read shinebox it was all over. God that was funny.

As for LaLeggia, I am pulling for this kid. Will always pull for a kid who is undersized but skilled. Hope he makes it, and excited for his upcoming looksie in Oklahoma.

the best part of that classic thread (beyond the all-star cast of posters and some of the old nicknames/handles still in place, not to mention HBomb day drinking… man I miss those threads!) is actually the commentary about ON and the general mistrust of Wanye. How times have changed…

(second best part was discovering I was actually in that thread with my old user name. I didn’t contribute much of anything, but it’s nice to know I was there.)

    Wow. You forgot Daryl Metcalf.

Two of the guys are employed by NHL teams now.

Not saying lightening will strike two more times…

What a flashback though. I started reading this blog a month or so before this.

I remember this comment for some reason: “And how the hell did you end up with dude from ‘Sweet’ in your avatar? That’s funny stuff.”

Was that a running joke at the time?

  67. Big Dan says:

That 2008 post just threw me for a loop. I was reading the comments and then it had big dan talking about being a first time poster. I’m like wtf! Then I saw the date.

I’ve given up watching the oilers this year, for the most part. Once Eakins was fired, I watch a period here or there and it’s weird- the oilers always play well. But I’m following the jets and flames more.

Yet… man lowetide, I can’t stop reading this bloody blog everyday. I love your write ups and the posts hitching about Schultz, ference, the goalie, or some boneheaded giveaway.

I sometimes listen to games on the way home on the train. I remember a 1-0 lead blown against the jets with 2 minutes left. I couldn’t wait to read the responses.

Thanks for keeping me an oiler follower. With a decent coach, there may actually be hope… If they replace Mact with a real gm.

He should be in jail for that.

My first thought upon reading this article is that NOW Jultz can be traded away.

Does any team need two of that kind of player?

  82. "Steve Smith" says:

Lowetide: I liked the one I wrote about Magnus Paajarvi in the Springsteen RE series (Steve Smith said something very kind in the comments and it’s always stuck with me).

I had to look it up; I stand by it.

While I’m definitely firmly seated in the LaLeggia hype train, it’s worth remembering that Joey has to actually get to the NHL before we decide we have a better Schultz.

Not that it makes much difference, because half of our NHL defense play like poor AHLers and the actual guys from the AHL look great in comparison, but we need to go into next year assuming we won’t have a real puck-mover on defense unless we decide to sell the shop to get Erik Karlsson.
