In my mind, a modern day dynasty. Well done Hawks. Playing with 4 defenceman most of the playoffs.

  2. Zeabs93 says:

What an unreal series, closest one I’ve seen in years. Either team could have won, they were just so evenly matched.

  3. Pajamah says:

And before the cup is even handed out, the team may get picked apart. Fair that they are called a dynasty, think this may be the last push this deep though.

…..although, they’ve trade Byfuglien, Bolland, Versteeg, Ladd etc. They’ve 6s and Jacks to borrow LT’s vocabulary.

Congrats to them though. Tough to do all that and stay at the top of the heap.

  4. Pouzar says:

    Amazing.

Remember when Hossa tried to win the cup on 14 different teams?

  7. OF17 says:

I can’t wait to see the Oilers lift the Cup someday. I was born in ’92, so no Cups in my lifetime. Moved to the States in ’98 and lost close touch with the team until ’06. No playoff games for me yet as a fan who followed the day-to-day of the team. I think I might cry when it finally happens, much less when they win a Cup.

Godspeed McDavid, Hall, Nuge, Eberle, and company. Godspeed.

  8. oliveoilers says:

Thank goodness all that nonsense is over and we can concentrate on proper matters like….

    WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOTTTTTTTTTTT!!!!!!!!!!

  9. misfit says:

I wanted Chicago to win, but only because of how much I disliked the other 3 teams at the Conference Final stage. I’m glad they won, and they really do have a special team, but more than anything I’m just glad it’s over. Man do I ever hate watching other teams playing for the Cup.

  10. flyfish1168 says:

    Congratulations to the Hawks.

If I was starting a franchise I would pick Jonathan Toews. The best all around 200 feet game center man.

    YES!

That was an undominant win by an undominant team. I say that because I want the Edmonton Oilers to be that team. Right now no other team can claim it.

Chicago deserves a lot of credit for redefining NHL hockey, for the better, and for excellent team play.

That said, they as a modern dynasty are no where near as dominant as previous divided multi year winners.

They are my favourite non Oiler team in the current era and I don’t mean to trash them – I think I want to express my feelings pre hyperbole, and set a framework for what works for team style in the current NHL. Meaning what the Oilers should be looking for, and isn’t ‘baggage smashers’.

  13. Samson Loveblast says:

Huge congrats, what a team, especially Toews and Keith, fantastic players who play the game in the right way.

    Bring on the off season!

  14. Kitchener says:

I’m not a huge Hawks fan but man am I glad to see them win. What a team. With these Hawks as Cup Champs, the league is in good condition.

EDIT: Ignoring what’s happening in AZ, of course…

Puck retrieval is the key to the game.

  18. spoiler says:

Stan Mikita… pretty sure they named the Cup after him.

That’s no Stanley Cup game though. The Rags failed to make the playoffs that year.

    Still a great photo.

Congrats to the Hawks. Class of the league yet again, especially Toews and Keith.

Now that the Hawks have won, we can get on to the “Oilers Playoffs”, aka the draft.

You’ll recall a few weeks ago that SwedishPoster did some really impressive work on the draft. He’s since refined it and it is now available on NerdAlert.

This is the most thorough draft deconstruction I have ever read. I kid you not. If you’re interested in the draft process (and if you’re on LT’s blog, you almost certainly are), this is a must read.

Just amazing amazing work from SwedishPoster.

“pretty sure they named the Cup after him”

    Really?

Oilers fans hark – we no longer need to like other teamz because ours is awful.

I am surprised at how many Oiler fans don’t perceive the magnitude of the success their team has had. Or it’s players.

I am actually quite surprised how many of us don’t seem to register the magnitude of the last 8 weeks.

At the beginning of the series I was rooting for the lightning, had no allegiance to either team but I like an underdog. By game 3 however, after watching what I thought was a lot of diving on behalf of Tampa mirrored with some very classy hockey from Chicago, I came around like the Russian fans in Rocky 4. Congrats to the Hawks!

  37. RexLibris says:

Congratulations to the Blackhawks. I’ve loved watching them play for the past seven or eight years. Fun, fast and skilled.

By contrast, I hated the Belfour Hawks. Hated. Them. I remember, I think it was Matheson, going on and on about Eric Daze being the bee’s knees (yes, I just said bee’s knees!) over and over. If that was indeed Matheson then I guess Daze was his Drew Stafford before Drew Stafford. Hated Belfour. Hated Roenick.

The Hawks from the moment they started playing after the lockout, though, just loved them. I got into a very heated argument with a friend in 2006 about taking Jonathan Toews before Sidney Crosby if we were drafting from the entire league. Maybe I’ll email him tonight.

All in all, a great season for Oilers fans. In the end a skilled, fast team won the day against another skilled fast team. Calgary and Kesler were kept away from the Cup for one more year. And…I’m forgetting something….oh yes, WOOOOOOOOOOTTTTTTT!

Now for something completely different: very interesting article about where the information came to arrest the FIFA officials http://www.theguardian.com/football/2015/jun/15/chuck-blazer-fifa-ban-undercover-back-taxes-plea-deal

Reading through this it really helps to illustrate the levels of corruption in that system.

Anyway, back to celebrations for Chicago, very happy they won it on home ice. Now, let us begin the hand-wringing over the Oilers “seen him good” trade offers on Blackhawks contract dumps.

Remember the peer lists over the last few years!
I guess the key is to assume guys are too verbal to notice the peer trend and need to have it laid out for you in paragraph!

    This is simple fucking shit.

I told you guys how to do this this 5 years ago.
Go to Stats on Elite prospect.
    Pick a league.
Make a list of the top PPG, GPG players in those leagues year to year.
    Elite trends start to show.

Like +.20 GPG 18yr Russian forwards.
    Kovalchuk
    Semin
    Ovechkin
    Malkin
    Kuznetsov
    Tarasenko
    Yakupov
    Slepyshev
    Yakimov

    Swedish Junior 1.00 PPG?
    No!
    specific:
    .80+ PPG @16 Superelit J20
    1.10+ PPG @17 Super Elit J20
    Get it right!

    Slovakia .25 PPG @U18
Bondra 6’5″220lb .27PPG in later rounds
    Marco Dano
    Tomas Mikus
    Marek Hrivik
Bondra’s the kind of kid you draft late and Bring over to play for oil Kings.

MHL Minimum 1.00 PPG with strong EVG Ratio

    But nice paragraphs!
    SwedishPoster!

Now how about the peer lists!

Cause i do not believe your words!

    rickithebear,

To be fair ricki, I bet you’d get more recognition if we could understand what you were saying more often. If you have real points, why choose to phrase them as if you don’t?

Case in point, I have no clue what you’re saying after the Russian forwards point. Which admittedly has no GP or TOI/G element to it, but if you’ve got something to say, paragraphs and logic are not your enemies.

When you do the simple exercise of looking at Peer history.

Kids in SWE superelit J20 who get .80 PPG @16 and Get 1.1 PPG at 17 make it in the NHLand are very good players!

    Peer trends:
    I list the trend.
Then give all the players that achieve that.
    Not a partial list!
    All!

Slepyshev and yakimov better be top 30 Goal scorers cause everyone else was.
They might be top 10 goal scorers.
    Cause that is the norm!

I’m not 100% sure about him yet. His skating is sublime, it’s insane how in just a few strides he’s out of his zone and at the other’s team blueline. The issue is when he reaches the offensive zone, you can almost hear the gears turning in his head as he’s trying to figure out what he should do next. He doesn’t think the game ala Karlsson, Hedman, Keith and the likes.

That’s a narrative that, imo, doesn’t play in the games I’ve watched and I have watched a ton of them this year. From my eye, when he rushes the puck, he is so goddamn fast that others around him aren’t sure how to react. The seas part when this kid rushes the puck. When he’s got actual NHL speed flanking him he will be fine. But rushing the puck and offense are a small percentage of what this kid is going to bring. He will retrieve it and put it on the tape of the stars and do it for 25-30 min a night.

  53. kinger_OIL says:

Swedish Poster – awesome stuff! I am an avid Backgammon player, and with the advent of Snowie and a bunch of other programmes, BG has been totally changed in terms of strategy. (BG has a much higher degree of uncertainty and tree of possible positions than Chess, which makes it fascinating) This is the kind of foundation work that can change dratfing strategy. In BG, the opening moves which emerged from computer analysis demonstrate that a number of opening moves that were unquestioned, conventianal wisdom, for many decades are now considered suboptimal. You are probably unearthing the same type of stuff. Fun to read.

There is absolutely no way he is not in the NHL at the start of the year.

I honestly think he was better in his short AHL playoff stint than he was in the OHL playoffs if you take into account the circumstances of having brand new teammates and a big uptick in competition. Here is a report from Staples after his first playoff game this year and again he only got better.
