LETTING THE DAYS GO BY (WATER FLOWING UNDERGROUND)

Way back at the end of the season, long before the Talbot and Enroth talk, I posted a lot of ‘possible goalie acquisitions’ for the Edmonton Oilers. That was three months ago and I do believe Talbot is the front runner and we speak this afternoon. However, let’s re-visit the March list (here):

THE CONTENDERS

  1. G Devan Dubnyk, Minnesota. A .935EV save percentage is incredible but he’s not coming here. I’d bet my house.
  2. G Craig Anderson, Ottawa. A .929EV save percentage would look glorious in Edmonton. Age an issue, cap hit of $4.2M, UFA summer 2018 and he’ll be expensive to acquire.
  3. G Corey Crawford, Chicago. A .928EV save percentage and a big contract. ‘Hawks have Darling and Raanta and miles of cap issues.
  4. G Antti Niemi, San Jose. A .921EV save percentage and a 1983 birthday. Oilers have to give only money for him.
  5. G Jonathan Bernier, Toronto. A .921EV save percentage and an RFA summer.
  6. G Martin Jones, Los Angeles. A .921EV save percentage and a contract in the range of a CFL Quarterback. RFA. I love his future.
  7. G Frederik Andersen, Anaheim. A .919EV save percentage, $1.3M next season and then RFA. He’s a little wobbly but young.
  8. G Jimmy Howard, Detroit. A .918EV save percentage, $5.292M cap hit and he’s signed to 2019 summer. Petr Mrazek is rumored to be pushing him.

Anderson didn’t appear to be on the market (or at least was well behind Robin Lehner among the Ottawa G’s perceived available) but as that may not be the case after all.

I prefer the Cam Talbot deal BUT as I mentioned awhile back, Glen Sather is not your ordinary negotiator and the Talbot trade will have a biblical feel by the time it’s done. The latest is here, but long story short there are ‘four deals’ and the verbal is vague so during this time of extreme hyperbole we’re best not chasing—better to let the news come to us.

If it’s Anderson, it’s alright by me IF the return isn’t bizarre (it will be dear) and the team plans on adding an up-and-coming option later on.

This is the new Keith Aulie option if it happens and of course piles more 5-6D onto the major league roster. McQuaid is interesting because it would force the team to make a move among the waiver eligible players this fall. That group would include Niki Nikitin, Mark Fayne, Andrew Ference along with RFA’s Justin Schultz, Martin Marincin and Brandon Davidson. Players not waiver eligible who are likely to play key roles for Edmonton along the blue line are Oscar Klefbom and Darnell Nurse.

If McQuaid does sign, I’d suggest that ensures Edmonton would run Schultz—Fayne—McQuaid on RH side with Klefbom—Nikitin—Ference on RH side. Where does that put Martin Marincin? You already know. What does that say about next season? Peter Chiarelli would be keeping his powder dry with the defense (while probably grabbing an upgrade in goal).

It’s not the ideal plan, but adding another mid-30’s free agent on a four year deal isn’t desirable either. The Hamilton dream remains one of the few options that could save this team’s 2015-16 season, and it is of course a distant bell.

This falls in line with the idea that PC is going to sit out this year’s free agent frenzy and wait for the Purcell, Nikitin and Scrivens contracts to burn off in 2015-16. This isn’t sexy, and it may not be true (we’re blue skying, or grey skying, here) but there tea leaves suggest this week may turn out just this way.

Positives? I think we’ll get our goalie, and it’s also very possible Edmonton loses only one pick in an extremely good draft year.

Let’s not kid ourselves, this is a Rocky long shot we’re talking about here. Still, Hamilton remains unsigned and the opportunity may present itself. What kind of poison-pill contract can the Oilers concoct? We may find out.

Fisher is 35 and has alternated healthy and injury plagued seasons for the past 6 years. If the trend continues, he’ll be “okay” this year but the next year, he’ll be a 37 year old cap anchor.

Btw, full NTC for Fisher too.

  4. oliveoilers says:

Ca$h-McMoney!: It’s the cheaper alternative to a well balanced squad.
Now if their actual goal is to play entertaining hockey, then you are for sure correct.

It’s safe to say that if LT had been a dogs fan, then that ‘Balance’ picture might well go to the grave with him.

I think Bettman may have mentioned to Maloney about branding in the desert. But it may be moo anyways. I predict one more season in the desert, then somewhere else.

TOTALLY agreed! A guy at 35 with injury issues? Sign him up!

Nashville will never have adequate offensive players if they keep up these kinds of signings. In management, you have to make tough decisions to pay according to future performance. This sentimental deal is entirely a “thanks for all your past efforts” contract.

  10. Lucinius says:

Fisher is very popular in Nashville, though. He helps put people in the seats — and not just because of who his wife is (although mainly that).

    That’s just fucking awful.

Might make Sather dig in his heels a bit on the 16th for Talbot, but more importantly it removes a major competitor for Talbot.

Unless BUF wants to spend the 31st on Talbot.

So the contract seems about right given recent signings. That’s all I meant.

  26. Ca$h-McMoney! says:

    Pouzar,

I hope Chia is smart enough to understand that, despite the overpay, this improves our position. Buffalo just paid for a starter, not a backup. They’ll be out of the Lack/Talbot market and the higher end UFA market now.

Supply decreased, but not as much relatively as demand decreased. Advantage: Buyer.

  27. skidplate says:

Maybe that is supposed to be the 31st pick for Lehner ???
If it is 21st, then we may have to overpay for Lack or Talbot. So UFA route then.

  28. Ca$h-McMoney! says:

    skidplate,

    No.

Buffalo doesn’t set the market. One less buyer in the market, prices didn’t go up (Chia should understand this).

  29. Kitchener says:

    Ben,

If he’s playing by the Tambo playbook, he’s actually doing extremely well.

  30. Traktor says:

That Ottawa deal is just terrible. If that’s the price for a goalie then stay the hell away from Talbot.

  31. Kitchener says:

As a fan of Canadian teams in general, that Ottawa deal is golden.

  32. Traktor says:

    Lowetide:
That Lehner trade is awful for Buffalo. Man that’s bad.

It’s something you’d see proposed on hf and the thread would get locked because it was so bad.

  33. Ca$h-McMoney! says:

The only way the 21st for Lehner/Legwand deal makes any sense is if Buffalo believes Legwand is a net positive. Like they were thinking “I’ll give you the 31st for Lehner, but if you throw in Legwand I’ll give you 21 instead”.

That’s crazy. Murray PUBLICLY said he would try to offload a bad contract in a goalie deal. He flat out stated that the player he was going to package with a goalie had negative value.

This suggests that Buffalo management, from a due dilligence perspective, didn’t even read a newspaper.

My god. Who hires these people?

  34. square_wheels says:

    Traktor,

Absolutely agree, let SJ or Calgary overpay and the CMD can light them up woooooooooohhhhhhooooottttt

Message received my friend! For the record, that Pou deal may have been MacT’s magnum opus.

Are you finding it strange that a lot of teams are making pre-Chia Oiler like deals and the media isn’t raking them over the coals?

Its a significant downgrade from those two in the short term imo.

    Crazy.

Woodranking of Lehner last 3 years:

    12/52 – Very good
    42/56 – Bad
    45/48 – Awful

    I wrote this:

Lehner has had two pretty bad seasons in a row. Had an amazing season for a 21 year old, but looks lost since. Not sure if injuries have something to do with that or not. Good news is that he’s very young and can come back. I wouldn’t trade for him though as the Oilers do not need a project in goal. They need goalies who have been good for the last 2-3 years and Lehner has not.

  38. Ben says:

Peaches says he’s not trading 16 for a goalie. xoxox

  39. v4ance says:

He just said, we’re not trading the 1st round pick for goalie in presser! YAY!

Every GM makes mistakes. As long as you make the fewest mistakes or the smallest mistakes at a lesser rate than others, the team will move forward. OTT is winning (losing) the Auston Matthews sweepstakes at this rate!

    Re: Buffalo

This proves the hardest thing about getting a generational talent is having management bad enough to “accomplish” the goal and then having that same management be the right one to rebuild it. I still don’t know how Lombardi was smart enough to stay bad until he was able to get Doughty.

Are you finding it strange that a lot of teams are making pre-Chia Oiler like deals and the media isn’t raking them over the coals?

Agreed. I was a big fan of Poo as a Ranger. Really wanted the Oilers to sign him. I did think he got half a million dollars per season and one season too much vs. what he was worth, but if he can keep up his play of this season, he’s well worth it and I eat my words. He reduced (save for that one glaringly bad o-zone penalty late in the game he owned up to–in fact, that play might have been the catalyst for his good season) his bad penalties and scored goals at a rate we hadn’t seen from him before. So good for him.

And yeah, that’s an awful deal for Buffalo and a significant risk with Lehner’s concussions. They should be getting raked over the coals.

  43. gd says:

I’m thinking Chia might just wait it out and with each domino falling the contract for Niemi gets cheaper.
