OILERS ACQUIRE ERIC GRYBA

The Oilers have traded the No. 107 pick and Travis Ewanyk to the Ottawa Senators for Eric Gryba. He’s big and right-handed and has played in the NHL. He’s 6.04, 225 pounds and would best be described as a depth defender.

Outside of the Talbot deal (and Talbot is hardly a sure thing).. I have to say, so far.. not a fan of Chia’s trades. Just… ugh. Disappointing.

  2. Younger Oil says:

12 assists and +11 last year isn’t awful. What’s his contract like?

And does Ross count on the 50 man since he signed in Germany?

  3. Visually better says:

    Younger Oil,

1 year left at 1.25 then UFA

  4. blainer says:

Actually like this guy.. decent depth move

  5. leadfarmer says:

Wtf. Chia has lost it. I like the Talbot trade. The Macdavid pick is a gimme. O/w u haven’t been this disappointed in a long time

  6. wiggs22 says:

Lowetide. What is your opinion of this draft so far for the oil?

I’m confused by some of these moves.

    Is gryba good?

  7. spoiler says:

    Fast and furious…

  8. Younger Oil says:

The only thing that can reclaim this day for me is if they find a way to get rid of Nikitin and/or Ference.

  9. Younger Oil says:

WE DON’T NEED ANY MORE FUCKING LHD

  10. John Chambers says:

I think fans’ expectations that Marincin + #16 would’ve yielded us Brent Burns were wildly naive.

That said Marincin for Gryba is a real depreciation of assets.

  11. RexLibris says:

Not words beginning with “f” that I was thinking of, but okay.

  12. John Chambers says:

Also, shouldn’t we have had our own 3rd round pick at #63? What happened to it?

  13. Visually better says:

Oilers draft: Seth jones brother at 117

  14. Cahoon says:

Marincin for Gryba is rough. Marincin will haunt us, I am sure of it.

  15. misfit says:

Gryba has been the Sens’ heavy Dzone minutes guy for years now. He’s been drowning in that role, but they’ e continued to use him in that role nonetheless.

On its own, this deal is probably fine. Ewanyk is a nothing prospect and easily tradable. The 107 is decent, but I’ll trade 4th round picks for NHL defensemen all day long (even 3rd pairing ones). If it wasn’t for the cost of getting that pick, I’m on board with this move. Marincin and Ewanyk for Gryba and Ross is just awful.

  16. Marc says:

He had tougher zone starts than Phillips, Cowen and Ceci, but performed only marginally worse in corsi terms. This really isn’t terrible.

  17. spoiler says:

    Younger Oil:
WE DON’T NEED ANY MORE FUCKING LHD

    Huh?

  18. Kris11 says:

Well, with the addition of Talbot and CMD (and there will be FA’s, too), the Oilers are significantly better today than they were.

Reinhardt and Gryba create defensive depth and size.

The Oilers still need top 4 Dman (or Dmen) to be a playoff contender. But they have the cap room to do it.

They paid too much in terms of prospects, but I also think the “Woe is us” meme that is rising here rests on overvaluing picks and prospects a bit.

I’m not defending the deals. Chiarelli could’ve gotten more for the picks (and Marincin) but the loss of the picks is not so terrible and the potential return that could’ve been had is probably not that much better than what was gotten.

  19. Kitchener says:

Trying to find a positive narrative to explain things…

The Oiler defense has seriously sucked for years. Everyone knew something had to change. Chia came into the organization and decided that a box of TNT was needed, whereas us LT.ca posters concluded that 66% of FNS had to go and Nurse/Klef/MM + 2 free agents was the solution.

    Stunned.

  20. John Chambers says:

Obviously Todd McLellan is on board with the philosophy that we need a big bruising defense corps. Let’s see what he can do with it.

  21. Kris11 says:

The good news here is that Chia is adding D, which makes me think he wants to move out some of Schultz, Nikitin, Ference.

  22. RexLibris says:

Remember that rumour that Garth Snow was willing to trade every pick he had in 2012 for Columbus’ 2nd overall (Ryan Murray)?

Chiarelli has thus far done the exact same thing after 1st overall and returned Cam Talbot, Brad Ross, Todd McLellan and Eric Gryba.

    Looking for silver linings here.

Still $$ left for FA too.

Basically Marincin for Gryba. I know nothing about Gryba.

  24. RexLibris says:

Okay, the Flames are going into contract years with Monahan, Gaudreau, and Giordano.

Do you offer sheet Hamilton knowing that if they match you’re giving them some cap constraints in the years ahead?

  25. Kris11 says:

Correction RexLibris: that should read “for one year of Cam Talbot and Eric Gryba”

  26. Chris says:

Chia obviously thinks the fact we had small soft defenseman led to the Oilers getting killed on the cycle. I suppose the last couple days make sense from that perspective.

  27. jp says:

A Nikitin trade / buyout and a Sekara signing make this offseason a resounding success.

Failing to do so puts us drafting top-5 next year.

You do it to inflate the cost on Hamilton, yes.

    7.2M x 3 is the offer

    And Reinhart.

  31. Lowetide says:

Brad Ross is a roster guy. He isn’t the heart of the deal. I’m surprised people are surprised EDM traded Marincin for 107. They were going to deal him once Reinhart was added imo.

    The McDavid cluster this far:

    Connor McDavid.

  33. Lucinius says:

    Lowetide,

    Surprised? No. Disappointed? Yes.

Marincin was doomed to be traded shortly into training camp last season.

  34. Kris11 says:

Yeah, I suspect the deal went down like this. Chiarelli says to the draft floor, “Marincin is available to the highest bidder” and the highest pick was 107. Ross was thrown in as a “rosster” move.

  35. Connorrhea says:

jp: I know nothing about Gryba.

Because you can see bad moves broadcast from a mile away with this team , not because it was the right thing to do. This year it was supposed to be different.

  38. Kris11 says:

The offer sheet won’t happen. It should, but it won’t. The Oilers should do it, as should other teams, but teams don’t seem to do that to each other when they have the shot to do it. Gentlemen’s agreement, or something.

  39. dangilitis says:

Did the oilers forfeit the 3 rd rd this year to San Jose ? If so I think that means they are going to be making offer sheets

  44. FPB94 says:

Just logging in to vouch for the guy.

Seeing him 10+ times a year he’s actually annoying as hell to have your team play against.

He’s got decent speed and is rugged. Not bad of a player IMO>

  47. Johnny says:

    Marincin for Gryba ALL DAY.

C’mon you guys, this guy is big and nasty. We have been so soft for so long. He can clear the net and bust the cycle.

The guy that built the Big Bad Bruins is reworking our D.

    Relax.

  48. Ironmantle says:

More bitching and moaning from a fan base that tragically overvalues its prospects. According to Jason Gregor last night on TSN 1260, Marincin had virtually no trade value outside of this organization. I’m amazed they got anything at all for him.

I personally don’t have much of an opinion on him myself but if the organization has soured on him then there must be a reason.

And Gryba? Even if he’s no better than a depth defense-man and plays on our 3rd pairing I’d say he’s mile batter than Nikitin or even Ference. Especially at the reduced price tag.

Remember prospects usually don’t work out.
Chiarelli’s greatest blunder was lettting Hamilton fall to Calgary.
What ever the price he should not have let that happen.

Even disposing of Marincin was rationalizable.

Take no issue with the Reinhart acquistion relative to unproven prsopects.

But to see Hamilton in Calgary for nothing was something Chiareli could not let happen.

    But he did. Gross mistake.

You realize they asked for Oilers #16,#33, #57 AND Nurse right?
They were looking to fleece Chiarelli or trade Hamilton to his obvious rival.
Him not making this trade is one of the few things I understood about Chiarelli the last couple days.

  52. TokyoOil says:

Lots of emotion from Oil fans regarding how Chia and team have made decisions during the draft. Amazing to see the variation in opinions which have largely consisted of disappointment and anger at the moves made by the team. But I get it because everyone on here is a diehard Oil fan and we’re passionate. Winning the draft lottery has also given us hope that the years of misery will soon be over.

Soon be over – to me that is what I think is driving so many of the comments I am reading. But what does “soon be over” mean to most? Next year? First year at Roger’s Place? Last year of McDavid’s ELC?

The reality is that it is all of these and not one specifically. If you accept this as reasonable then you begin to realise that our management is showing signs of strategic thinking that has been sorrily missed for the past 9 years.

Adding D Reinhart is a good bet. Size, leadership, and potential to be an excellent 3/4 pairing d man. Look at Chicago – Hjalmarrson, Oduya as their 3/4. We need these type of players and GR has the potential to be one for the next 10 years.

Talbot for picks. Enough already about everyone freaking out that we trading away our picks. Even in this “deep draft” year. We need to address areas of deficiency and I like that we are not trading away our young assets to solve this problem. We need a year of competent management and coaching to understand what our youngsters are capable of and how they fit in the team. Completely inappropriate to evaluate our young talent based on their performance under the extremely inept coaching of Eakins.

Gryba for Marincin. I liked Marincin 2 years ago and don’t know what happened this year to derail his progress but it is what it is. This is good for him and for us. Gryba is 27, a RHS and plays a hard game. Sure he is a 6/7 but so was Marincin. His contract is also cheap so another body without eating up too much cap space.

As I think about the moves made today and yesterday I realise that mgmt is finally thinking long term. Thinking about managing the cap, thinking about what type of role players we need, thinking about the age mix of the team down the road and the benefits of the team having a good core of 10-12 players that can grow together over the next 10 years.

Take a breath everyone. With McLellan and staff coaching this team next year I believe that every player on the team is going to improve significantly and so will our team play. With the pieces added over this weekend we should be excited about next year and the future. Don’t be surprised if the Oil challenge for a playoff spot next year.

Negative mood in the air … do we know how to be happy?

Here is how I see the process so far.

    Management

New GM is better than the old
New Coach is better than the old
New farm team in Cali division is better than OKC
    ———————————————————
    “Draft” Assets

    McDavid is better …..ok best
Reinhart is going to be a horse …4th overall pick and
    Talbot is better than Faust
    Gryba better than Niiktin/ Ference
Marincin is the only NHL player given up
    Signed Slepyshev …wonderful
    keep Nurse and Driasaitl
    —————————————————–
    Free Agents

Reinhart, Gryba, Talbot’ s collective cap is going to be below Hamilton
We can still be in the mix for quality UFA
We have the players to trade Niktin, or Ference to Cap floor team

  54. Really? says:

Never have I seen so much pissing and moaning by so many about fundamentally sound moves by Oilers management. Patience will solve many problems.

  55. Woogie63 says:

tons of cap space is left to add more

    look to

    Ward / Frolick / Stewart
    Sekera / Oduya / Beauchemin
    Ramo / Neuvith / Enroth

Pretty clear LA can’t afford Sekera now

  56. BeerMe says:

This has been a great draft for the Oilers and some smart “start winning ASAP” moves from Chia. We have the cap space to sign a 1D, it’s pretty much the last piece of the puzzle. After a decade of losing, late picks are just so much less valuable to this franchise than actual NHL players, even depth ones. It’s all coming together and we should pause for a moment to reflect on just how astoundingly far we’ve come this offseason.

  57. jm363561 says:

Just one good D to be signed – Sekera? – and I’m pretty pleased overall. Only time will tell if GReinhart is the next APlante; if he is then Big Fail, but I like the idea of a top prospect closer to NHL readiness rather than a straight pick. I think the Flames getting Hamilton has everyone on a downer; PChia tried, refused to overpay, we move onward, and hopefully upward.

Just because Boston screwed themselves to screw Chiarelli isn’t Chiarelli’s fault. Calgary lucked into their stupidity in a spiteful move by Boston. Chiarelli was interviewed saying that wasn’t the asking price for him so obviously Sweeney\Neely were not going to deal with Chiarelli.

  59. Mr. D. says:

    Lucinius,

Gryba is a love hate guy. The purists who put equal value on defence like him, the corsi crowd doesn’t. Should see him improve as he always came off to allow Karlsson on thus spend little time on the O zone.

  60. Mr. D. says:

    misfit,

GRYBA has been strong in the defensive end not sure what you are talking about. Of the 3 tradable D in Ottawa he was the best by far defensively and top 3 in Ottawa in the D end.
