PITLICK QUALIFIED, MATT FRASER DOWN THE LINE

The Edmonton Oilers did the expected this afternoon, qualifying three of their RFA’s (Justin Schultz, Brandon Davidson and Tyler Pitlick) while walking:

  1. G Tyler Bunz
  2. G Frans Tuohimaa
  3. D Keith Aulie
  4. C Kellen Lain
  5. L Matt Fraser
  6. L Curtis Hamilton
  7. L Brad Ross

No surprises there, the Oilers 50-man list is now at 43 with Connor McDavid and others still to come.

Surprising based on his career progress, suspect another NHL team will sign him during free agency. More later.

Does the NHL have a central listing of RFA QOs?

Do see that Dougie Hamilton was qualified in Calgary,( http://flames.nhl.com/club/news.htm?id=772897) hoping they might have discovered his character issues in time and saved themselves the hassle.

Presume it is related to SJ wanting to create some room on their 50 man list. Curious what the plan is or if they just are keeping some flexibility for the week to come.

Don’t take offense to this LT, but congratulations. I know you’ve long been a fan of this player. I think we saw last year that he could play in the NHL, but the injuries, the injuries, the injuries. One more chance Texaco?

  7. TheGreatMcMutato says:

I assume they want to see if Pitlick can take a step forward with less time spent in the hospital, more time playing hockey before closing the book on him. I wish the guy luck staying healthy so that he can give it a proper try. He is already several seasons behind on development but still possesses many characteristics one looks for in a depth player. Time will tell (though not much more).

  8. Richard S.S. says:

Cleaning out the underachievers I see. New brooms and all that.

Didn’t Chiarelli say repeatedly the only thing he’d move a #16 pick for was a number one defenseman. How do you know who’s a guaranteed #1D before his ELC or, just in year one?

  9. kdunbar says:

Well the Oilers are in a good position now (cap wise) and about 11 million in cap space and only 43 contracts. After signing McDavid, that still leaves enough room for another couple of players UFA and have about 14 Million coming off the books to non core players after next season.

I am convinced that we will not see buyouts, but let the contracts burn so they have the full cap room from the expiring contracts for the 2016 – 2017 season.

    Now who do they sign?

  10. Snowman says:

I was a little worried about Pitlick but I’m happy for the kid he made it. I hope this year he puts it all together and his body holds up.

  11. misfit says:

I have long been of the “trade Pitlick” camp, but this year was different. He seemed to make things happen every time he was on the ice, and looked good no matter who they played him with. Even though he only had 2 points in his 17 NHL games this season, the guy looked like a player for the first time since I’ve started following him as a prospect.

I never understood why they had him turn pro after only 1 WHL season, but I also don’t think that’s what derailed him. His story was always highlighted by injuries more than anything.

For their next GM to use in 2017. Brilliant headline.

  13. haters says:

Some people here are just plain silly. You ask Pitlick to play a hard checking aggressive game and complain about his injures …. It’s like any other job you do when you are young, every rookie gets beat up at the start of his career until he learns how to do the job without the injures.
    Common sense
Also, I’m tired of seeing analytics guys talk out their collective behinds when it comes to the recent moves, in particular Marincin. Yea he could pass the puck and make smart decsisions defensively, but no shot and no physical play put him in the replaceable bin for me. It’s fine to have one guy like that but when there are 4 others on the ice like that it’s hard .
Anyone who doesn’t see the value in players like Gryba or Reinhart have never played hockey, or left their parents basement for that matter .
Intimadation and confidence go hand in hand.

  24. RexLibris says:

Wasn’t Marincin drafted with the pick we got for Nash?

So the Oilers took a 1st and a 2nd round pick to trade up in the 1st round to take Nash whom they later flipped for a 2nd round pick which they used on Marincin whom they moved to get a 4th round pick which they flipped along with the player taken by the conditional 3rd round pick they got from the Flames for Steve Staios to the Senators for Eric Gryba who was a 3rd round pick provided to Ottawa by Boston as compensation for the latter’s hiring of Peter Chiarelli.

Both Edmonton and Calgary have cap space. If LA retain salary, then I believe that if the team that trades for him buys him out, the two teams split the buyout cap hit.

If LA offer Forbort or Zykov as the reward for the cap help, you have to at least think about it.

  45. Revolved says:

Pitlick had a solid corsirel (+4.5) despite no zone start push (44% off zone). If he could put up some points he would make a decent third line winger, which is still very possible given his age and that we have never seen him healthy enough to settle in. Let’s hope that when they fixed his spleen they infused his skeleton with adamantium.

    Fickle Fred,

I do not expect to see Peter Chiarelli and the Oilers chasing big money “whales” on Wednesday, and I also think that this is not a particularly deep free agent crop.

The Oilers added Talbot in goal and Reinhart and Erik Gryba on the backend to change the look of those two positions.

I think you might see a move made to potentially alter the make-up of 3rd or 4th lines, maybe adding a harder third-liner who can chip in some offence as well.

Entirely possible that this type of move might be made via trade as well instead of free agency.”

  56. Shizuka says:

Pierre McGuire stated on a Montreal radio interview that Richards apparently had some border crossing trouble recently.. may play into this. Material breach is strong legalese and for LA to do this, obviously Lombardi feels he has the grounds to do so. It’s pretty ugly seeing Stoll arrested for cocaine possession (though he somehow managed to plead down to lesser misdemeanour charges) and now this with Richards. He also seemed to have trouble staying in shape or committing to an off-season fitness regime as outlined in this TSN article:

    http://www.tsn.ca/talent/kings-gm-lombardi-burned-by-second-chance-1.320414

Back to FA talk — while this season’s crop seems pretty weak, there are still some relatively ok options in Frolik and even Stafford, though I really don’t get the love at all for the latter by some (bigger body, skilled, inconsistent, very soft — we have that in Purcell).. Stauffer was saying Garbutt in Dallas would be a target but he signed a 3 year extension with Dallas didn’t he? Nill is a smart GM, I can’t see us acquiring him but we’ll see. More concerning is the current state of the D core but that area of the FA pool is even weaker.

Hey I liked Marincin – but something was rotten and the market has spoken with less than glowing words about the young Slovak. What they got is what the market thought he was worth like it or not. Seems like a Smid situation where a lot of us over-valued the guy.

When does the buyout window close? We need to just move on wrt Ference unless someone is crazy enough to want him with wth 50% salary retained or less. Cap hit is only about $1 million for 4 years to get rid of this awful mistake which is manageable. If Nikitin is as bad in TC as last year then we just send him to the AHL as an injury callup and we save about another $1 million in cap. But with only 1 year left on his contract you just let this one ride with no buyout.

Need to address the top pair in a sophisticated way. The 1LD is a placeholder for a couple of years (so no super long deals) but it’s an important place. A Sekera would be perfect but looks like LA is trying to wiggle out of Richard’s contract. Might work for them but I think they damage their reputation in the UFA market which is fine by me. Would be willing to take over a big contract for the right guy if it was only 2 or no more than 3 years long – which keeps me coming back to guys like Chara or Markov. No sense in BOS keeping Chara now but will they deal with EDM, would he come, and what is the price? Same with Markov. A fine mess Chia has to deal with – the GR trade addresses part of the future – but does little for this coming season.

I don’t think it is so much “satisfied” as “resigned”.

They could add a top-four, but unless Sweeney has another one hidden up his sleeve somewhere and is done with the vengeance shtick, the ask is probably more than Chiarelli is willing to offer right now.

Besides, it’s only June 29th. We haven’t even hit free-agency yet. Explore the options there and then see if a team over-signs and needs to dump a player.

Maybe Brian Campbell shakes loose from Florida or some such possibility. Patience and consistency is the best bet right now.

    AsiaOil,

Ference’s NMC means a buyout is particularly tricky. This is why I think he gets traded during the summer or -sigh- at the deadline.

It needs to be in his best interests, and right now there aren’t as many incentives.

What about just trying to get him to retire? Maybe a Rexall franchise…

I think the players have to be placed on unconditional waivers for buyout between June 15 and June 30. I don’t honestly feel Chiarelli would do that to Ference, past and current loyalties being what they are. Nikitin… I am not sure how he remains on the roster, minus the acknowledgement that the young guys need a bit more time and he’s a known quantity (albeit a really poor quality one). I guess they are banking on him smartening up and committed to coming into camp ready. Count me in as one of those not sold at all on that — for what he brings, and the price point of that contract, we could find a very similar player at a more cost effective level.. I’d almost have more faith in Davidson than Nikitin at this point.

Why do you feel his NMC makes a buyout tricky? AFAIK, there’s no movement when waived for purposes of buyout.

Ha. Even better if it gives Sekera and Williams another reason to join that market.

  79. AsiaOil says:

Hey guys – Chia dumped Ference once and did not negotiate his ridiculous deal – so he’s not bound by anything. Why treat the guy like he’s glass. He’s a pro and he’s in this situation because he’s been a disaster on the ice. This is business and if his feelings are hurt – then he’s got plenty of cash to hire a shrink if he needs one.

The thing that irks me about MacT sticking around is that Chia may want to buyout Ference( don’t know, I’m just spitballing)…but the guy that signed him to that contract is sitting across the desk from Chia saying “are you sure you want to do that..?

Anyone else concerned about various media members saying they don’t expect Edmonton to be busy in free agency?

The free agent crop is pretty weak. I think everyone knows that you have to overpay to get free agents and the top guys are all going to want money and term. There isn’t anyone out there worth making significant commitments to IMO. We need that 1-2D and it will only come in a trade.

  89. Pechetr says:

The draft was less than 2 days ago and FA starts tomorrow. I know we are pessimistic as Oiler fans, but how about we give it a few weeks before we start calling Chiarelli’s tenure a failure. I cannot believe people actually think Mac T had anything to do with Marincin. Did none of you watch Chiarelli’s first press conference? He was very clear that the Oilers needed to play heavier and be heavier on the stick. Neither of those are in the same sentence as Marincin. He is softer than melted butter. I never understood the love in. And the ire for Ference is Horcoffian here. He may be past his best before date, but show some respect. The guy paid his dues and deserves far better. Hockey is a team sport last I checked. Ference is not the reason this team has been shit for years.
