G12 2015-16: FLAMES AT OILERS

It’s early to have an ‘important’ game in a long season, but the Calgary Flames have one tonight at Rexall. Despite poor possession numbers and chaos blue, despite voodoo goaltending and a coach who says genuinely unusual things, the Calgary Flames have to win the game. Their season depends on it.

WESTERN CONFERENCE STANDINGS, THIS MORNING

  • No. 11 Edmonton Oilers 11GP, 4-7-0 (8 points)
  • No. 12 Colorado Avalanche 10GP, 3-6-1 (7 points)
  • No. 13 Calgary Flames 11GP, 2-8-1 (5 points)
  • No. 14 Anaheim Ducks 10GP, 1-7-2 (4 points)

All four of these teams are in real trouble (the Bettman point!!!) but the Flames (and Ducks) are staring a very long season in the face at an early stage. Although Oilers fans have a right to be impatient, a win tonight (and a 5-7-0 record) would offer some hope for the future. Coming out of the worst part of the schedule, with the Flyers on the schedule this week (Philadelphia’s defense does a lot of things Edmonton fans would recognize). The Battle of Alberta has a dubious backdrop at this time, but at least it’s a story line.

OILERS BLUE THROUGH ELEVEN

OIL D AFTER 11

This is sorted by Corsi Rel, I added it in the hopes of gaining some insight into Mark Fayne’s fall from grace. Based on these numbers, he’s absolutely one of the six best solutions on the roster:

  • 5×5 Corsi for % over 50%
  • Corsi Rel is No. 1 among regular D
  • He is not getting a ZS push
  • Fayne—Sekera is 48.3% Corsi for % as a tandem.

Remember, our eyes can play tricks on us, that’s why we look at the numbers to confirm. Why is Fayne posting these fancy stats and getting deeper in the doghouse? Why did he play so little the other night? I think it has to do with Todd McLellan’s preference on the defense, and Eric Gryba’s emergence as the shutdown defenseman who plays the most minutes. Gryba is less expensive, bigger, more physical and of course he was acquired by GM Peter Chiarelli. All of those things may contribute to Fayne’s recent handling, and I suspect we’ll see him dealt at some point this season. His footspeed is not good, and his defense of sorties (in terms of decision making) is often alarming.

What does that mean for the Oilers blue? Well, by the time Justin Schultz returns we’ll know more about Darnell Nurse and where he stands. Perhaps Todd McLellan will also continue to give Brandon Davidson a push to see if the young blue continues to play at par. There’s also Griffin Reinhart, who played well enough early with Eric Gryba to stay in the lineup until injuries hit.

  • Andrej Sekera—Brandon Davidson
  • Darnell Nurse—Oscar Klefbom
  • Griffin Reinhart—Eric Gryba

Could we see HS’s for Mark Fayne and Andrew Ference? It may happen. One thing I believe the box above shows? Giving Justin Schultz a tough zone start probably isn’t the right choice. I believe Dallas Eakins got it right.

DANGER FENWICK RATE PER 60

danger fen

I lifted this from the brilliant blog Oilers Nerd Alert, please click on the link because I didn’t ask permission to do it. I think young G is on to something here, this DFA/60 number (Dangerous Fenwick) from the Habs game is very insightful and offers some reasoning re: Fayne’s handling. I have been (and am) very conservative in adopting new stats, for two reasons:

  • The idea is to post stats that both inform and can be easily understood.

I like this for one other major reason, via GMoney: Interesting fact – the TOI for the defensemen is directly correlated with how good they were at preventing dangerous shots against.

That’s a strong indicator a solid backward Bill James (James would ask a question and search for the answer, then track it back using logic and good sense). The above item from G is exactly that kind of logic and reason. There’s something here, or perhaps more accurate, there’s something I am able to comprehend as having value. That’s kind of what Bill James was good at it, and it’s wildly important. It also gives us a glimpse into why Mark Fayne isn’t playing as much.

OILERS FORWARDS THROUGH ELEVEN

OILF AFTER 11

Oh that crazy Taylor Hall is always falling down and passing silly and looking like a man who can’t remember the last thought that went through his head. That’s about right. Hall’s critics often deliver high comedy, as the actual performance is absolutely dandy again this season. Slow start but he’s killing it; the man can push a river.

Connor McDavid’s 5×5/60 is dreamy and his on-ice performances are must-watch events for hockey fans. I know older people can be irritating when talking to the young set, but please enjoy this young man’s rookie season. You won’t see another like it in your lifetime and if you do, well, you’ll get emotional watching the games. What a stunning talent. In game 11 of his NHL career he beat one of the best defensemen in the game, on a play that might have resulted in a penalty. How a man could be both unavoidable to the viewer and stealth to the opposition is the stuff of legends. We’re running out of words.

Nail Yakupov’s boxcars are splendid and his level of awareness—especially in the offensive end—is reaching new levels. There’s a tendency to credit others for his development, but Nail is his own man and we rarely take into account that lost half-season. Hard to believe this is the same player, although he reminds us from time to time with an errant pass or a burst to nowhere in order leave his man open in the defensive zone. Damnable dog whistles are everywhere!

A final note: This is a big damned game. Seriously. The Oilers are 4-7-0 and that’s a reflection of the good and bad on this team. If they can win tonight, no matter what it does to Calgary, it offers players, fans and management some kind of hope for this season. It can’t always be about trade deadline selloffs and ‘let’s look at the 2016 draft’ and with a win tonight we can dare to dream.

Peter Chiarelli is going to make a move to improve the defense, I’m convinced of it. I’m also pretty sure the trade is going to involve Mark Fayne, and further that it’s more likely to be a trade that helps ‘in the now’ if this team is 6-7-0 after the Philly game.

Godspeed, men. We believe in most of you.

If this fucking counts I will murder someone.

Are you going to be okay?

  2. Lucinius says:

A small bit of sanity returns.

    Small bit.

  3. delooper says:

IMO it’s a smart strategy by Hartley. He wanted to take a time out anyways. If he doesn’t get the call he’d like, he still gets what he wants.

  4. Centre of attention says:

    Hartly has paid someone….

  5. spoiler says:

And then we go to an ad? After all that?

  6. Lucinius says:

spoiler: Are you going to be okay?

Depends how work goes after the game.

Let’s just say I’m hoping for some drunks to get out of line tonight!

  7. G Money says:

    Ha ha. So true.

Wow, Hartley is just trolling the league with this challenge. He already screwed the league and now he is asking to bang their sister— Dennis King (@DKingBH) November 1, 2015

  8. Centre of attention says:

McLellan needs to shorten the bench.

    G Money,

This team c ant afford not to ice their best lineup. Haven’t seen much of nurse in the 3rd, but the Captain has sure been noticeable!

    YEAHHHH!!!!!

    Fuck you!

(I would like to apologize to LT for my language tonight.)

  17. delooper says:

    The professional!

  18. G Money says:

Beauty play. Gotta exploit that fatigue now.

That the Oilers are still being outworked everywhere on the ice is just beyond pathetic. Despite the refs shenanigans, the Flames have been the better team, and for that fact, I don’t even have any words.

  19. jp says:

    Motherfucker!!!!

I was just thinking “what a choppy stride”. Now I don’t mind one bit.

  20. RENNAVATE says:

Beautiful pass from Hall. Just beautiful.

    Good finish, great pass!

  26. SK Oiler Fan says:

That’s some serious skill to pull off that pass and 1 timer

  27. delooper says:

Okay cmd… time to push these Flames over the edge.

  28. leadfarmer says:

    Colborne!!!! I mean Draisatl.

  29. Pastor of Disaster says:

Seriously, how great is it that they play Dr. Dre every time Draisaitl scores? EVERY PHENOM GETS A THEME SONG!

  30. G Money says:

    SK Oiler Fan,

Yup. The Oiler D is a tire fire at the best of times … to not play the best possible lineup is bizarre and inexcusable and was one of the things that rightly cost Eakins his job.

  31. russ99 says:

    Drai!!

    Great pass Hall!.

  32. Centre of attention says:

McDavid missed an open net, won’t see that happen again for a long time haha.

  33. Kitchener says:

    Hall with 3 points.

    Trade the bum!

    hahahahaha… Flame Killers!

  34. Lucinius says:

    Ference…

    Don’t play him!

  35. fuzzy muppet says:

STOP PUTTING 21 OUT ON THE ICE!!!!!

  36. Picturesque says:

why is Ference still playing in this game, why?????

  37. delooper says:

Nail needs to find something useful to do on those wide rushes.

  38. G Money says:

WHY THE FUCK ARE GRYBA AND FERENCE OUT THERE? My fucking Gord, they are just so goddamn awful.

  39. Zelepukin says:

WOW, how is Ference still playing?????

  40. spoiler says:

Seems to me like McDavid has had less puck touches this game.

Really don’t want to see the streak end.

    Both top lines double-shifted here.

  41. Lucinius says:

    G Money:
WHY THE FUCK ARE GRYBA AND FERENCE OUT THERE? My fucking Gord, they are just so goddamn awful.

If no one asks TMac in the post game why they continued to see the ice every media person in attendance should be barred from the profession.

  42. Lucinius says:

    He’s back on the ice!!!!!!

  43. fuzzy muppet says:

It’s like immediate ice-tilt once 21-62 hit the ice. Even when 4-93-29 are out with them.

I have to wonder if TMac WANTS to lose

  44. delooper says:

    Zelepukin:
WOW, how is Ference still playing?????

Maybe Nurse or Klefbom are a little injured.

  45. spoiler says:

Pakarinen has two shifts this period, Sleppy and Gazdic have none.

  46. Zelepukin says:

    This is beyond ridiculous.

  47. healthyscratch says:

I can see MacT defending Ferrence in the press box now to Chia:

MacT – He’s working really hard out there!

Chia – So do washing machines

  48. hags9k says:

Ference, take a seat on the pine. Seriously TMac, I want to stay on your side.

  49. fuzzy muppet says:

    Lucinius,

That kid is BACK ON THE ESCALATOR AGAIN!

  50. SayItAin'tSo, Gretz, SayItAint'sSo! says:

I am baffled by the defensive assignments

  51. Lowetide says:

Nurse looked hurt on the bench.

  52. square_wheels says:

    G Money,

I can’t handle this anymore, I’m as good as Ference and I wouldn’t put me out there.

  53. russ99 says:

How many times are we going to have to watch Ference flat beat by opposition forwards this year?

    Jeez.

  54. Kitchener says:

Why is everyone so down on Ference? His passes to Flames are tape to tape.

  55. Lucinius says:

    fuzzy muppet:
    Lucinius,

That kid is BACK ON THE ESCALATOR AGAIN!

    I just don’t understand!

He’s supposed to be one of the best coaches in the league… and, I.. ugh.

    I just don’t understand.

  56. G Money says:

    Davidson almost channeled Ference there.

  57. delooper says:

    russ99:
How many times are we going to have to watch Ference flat beat by opposition forwards this year?

    Jeez.

You don’t play hockey games with the defenders you’d like. You play with the defenders you have.

  58. Acumen says:

I would love to pilot the rocketship that suicide launches Ference into the Sun. Quite possibly the worst game I’ve ever seen an Oiler defenseman ever play tonight.

  59. square_wheels says:

Ok Gryba is good for that

  60. jp says:

    That was a nice hit.

  61. fuzzy muppet says:

    G Money,

    So did Ference

  62. rich says:

This is unreal. Ference has not been able to make one single pass and he’s still playing.

    Turnover machine.

  63. 719 says:

Ferrence keeps on with his tape to tape passes, right to Jooris.

  64. Lucinius says:

Off-side saves the Oilers from yet another Ference turn over with his boards and out! move.

Lander has had a good third, imo. Working hard, at least, and causing the Flames some issues.

  65. Acumen says:

delooper: You don’t play hockey games with the defenders you’d like. You play with the defenders you have.

    Mark Fayne?

McLelllan has to own that decision tonight. Horrible, awful, very bad libeup choice.

  66. fuzzy muppet says:

    Ference gotta Ference

  67. Zelepukin says:

Ference makes a bad decision every fucking shift.

  68. delooper says:

Honestly it’s like most of you have forgotten what exciting hockey is like. This is it, folks.

  69. flyfish1168 says:

    Kitchener:
Why is everyone so down on Ference? His passes to Flames are tape to tape.

Somebody then has to remind him he hasn’t played for the F**kin phlegms in over 8 years

  70. Kitchener says:

    Lowetide:
Nurse looked hurt on the bench.

    Just a flesh wound.

  71. G Money says:

    square_wheels:
Ok Gryba is good for that

I think Gryba as 6D with someone reasonably capable at 5D is workable.

Gryba as 5D trying to babysit Ference is horrawful.

  72. Lucinius says:

I’d take a sober Ulanov over Ference.

And I mean the Ulanov of today.

A sober Ulanov would solve the problem of him sucking; he’d hurt someone, get a suspension and force the team not to play him.

  73. Lowetide says:

APBA Baseball taught me so much. In that game, you have to play your players the number of games they did in the actual season, but no more. So, if you’re trying to win the pennant you go crazy with the good ones, but eventually know that the poorer players are going to have to be used.

I feel like tonight is an APBA ‘must play’ for Andrew Ference, and I wish it was not the case.

  74. russ99 says:

    delooper,

I know, he’s gotta go with the 18+2 he has.

Fayne can be salvaged, hence the press box treatment tonight, that’s good coaching.

  75. SayItAin'tSo, Gretz, SayItAint'sSo! says:

    Idiot

  76. square_wheels says:

    Pou come fucking on

  77. G Money says:

    delooper:
Honestly it’s like most of you have forgotten what exciting hockey is like. This is it, folks.

    It’s ELPH though.

The Flames look like the truly terrible team they are. And the Oilers are being outplayed by them.

AAAAAAAAAAAND there’s an unnecessary but also bullshit call from Poo.

  78. Centre of attention says:

Yak slowing down and doing his shimmy-shake…makes it offside….*sigh*

  79. Lucinius says:

    Pouliot, why!?

Why take the shine off the Ference suckage!?

  80. fuzzy muppet says:

Most important PK of the season

  81. Zelepukin says:

    Pou gonna poo.

  82. Centre of attention says:

Pouliot…you bastard…you redeem yourself on the scoresheet and with corgis….but those penalties will be the death of you..

  83. Zelepukin says:

don’t worry guys, Ference will ference this game for us.

  84. Lucinius says:

Ference out on the pk now.

We’re screwed. Temporarily saved by off-side…

  85. spoiler says:

McD with the nice steal off his buddy Bennett

  86. Lucinius says:

McDavid saves us from Ference pk suckage!

  87. SayItAin'tSo, Gretz, SayItAint'sSo! says:

    OH cam talbot

  88. G Money says:

    OMFG. Talbot. Holy fuck.

  89. 719 says:

    wtf was that?

  90. Lucinius says:

    What… the… fuck…

    Talbot fucks up.

    Two bad goals tonight.

    I’m stunned.

  91. fuzzy muppet says:

    Un real.

    That is a season killer.

    All on Talbot

  92. Lowetide says:

    Well, that sucks.

  93. jp says:

    Hahaha

    Edit: that fucking sucks

  94. smellyglove says:

    Disgusting.

    More Glenfidditch please.

  95. spoiler says:

Unfucking believable. The Gords had all the bounces in Cowtown’s favour tonight. You cannot beat the gords.

  96. Centre of attention says:

    Holy fucking cow…

  97. SK Oiler Fan says:

    Scrivens!
    That’s icing FFS!!

  98. Yak Efron says:

    FUCK YOU BOOKJIE!!!!!

  99. HeatTreaterJoe says:

a goal like that, for the Flames… tough

*Edit: now to get really angry about that non-goal from earlier

  100. SayItAin'tSo, Gretz, SayItAint'sSo! says:

This game is eerily reminiscent of the game that killed the Oilers last year. Cam Talbot was very very bad tonight

  101. khildahl says:

Well, they fully earned that loss. Awful.

  102. Kitchener says:

    barf

  103. fuzzy muppet says:

    Same old bullshit.

  104. Lucinius says:

    Three stars of suckage tonight, imo;

    1) Ference.

    2) Talbot

    3) TMac

Guaranteed win tonight pissed away with vim and vigour. Oilers going to Oiler.

    Top six deserved better.

Ference shouldn’t see the ice again this season even if the plague strikes down half the team. If he does, TMac needs a kick to the jewels.

  105. leadfarmer says:

    Dammit Scrivens

  106. Centre of attention says:

Can’t they do a coaches challenge on an Icing?

  107. G Money says:

Man, after the first few solid games, I figured that Talbot might avoid the dreaded risk of ‘starters dip’.

But it ain’t looking good right now.

  108. LostBoy says:

    Cam Scrivens.

    Amazing.

  109. russ99 says:

Sucks, but we didn’t really deserve this one.

Too many weak goals by Talbot and we didn’t show up in the first again.

  110. Lowetide says:

Edmonton Oilers let Calgary off the hook. No other way to say it. And it’s on the coach.

  111. Gret99zky says:

    Because Oilers.

  112. SK Oiler Fan says:

So offside is reviewable, but not icing? Fin Bettman….And Talbot

  113. SayItAin'tSo, Gretz, SayItAint'sSo! says:

Wow… I cannot believe that game. This is on Talbot and TMac. Full Stop! Talbot was terrible tonight and this has just been the latest.

Yes Ference is terrible but anyone with a brain knows this. The real fool is the guy that plays him, TMac wears this.

  114. Centre of attention says:

    Hall with a 3 point night…Drai with 3 points…all for nothing….

  115. G Money says:

Ference and Cam Scrivens certainly wear this.

But the Oilers got outworked and outplayed by a terrible team on a guaranteed loss night.

    Inexcusable.

  116. fuzzy muppet says:

    Lowetide,

    99.99%

    Talbot did his part

  117. JDï™ says:

    I blame Pouzar.

  118. Gordies Elbow says:

Missed the playoffs for the 10th Fucking Year.

    I’m out.

  119. Professor Q says:

Apparently Edmonton has 5 goals, but lost 5-4 to Calgary…I’m assuming Benoit Pouliot didn’t score the last goal at 19:51, and it was indeed Frolik?

  120. leadfarmer says:

Talbot is now matching Scrivens in Save percentage. Maybe goalie hasn’t been fixed

  121. flyfish1168 says:

wow bad goaltending, bad coaches choice of line up, not ready to play in the 1st period, to much ference , to many lost baddles along the boards, and did I mention F**kin bad goaltending tonight. We suck tonight against a team that played the night before and 3rd game in 4 nights.

  122. hags9k says:

LT asked on ON when we might see LB in the bigs….Maybe sooner than we thought. That’s a horrible game by Talbot. Just fucking horrible. Your starter at home can’t be bringing out a bag of shit like that against your biggest rival.

I also blame Ference, Woodguy, and Bookje.

  123. Picturesque says:

Flames (and their fans) did some voodo on the Oilers tonight. There is no other explanation.
    Flukey goals, flukey win.
    Ouch.

  124. Centre of attention says:

Talbot let in 2 really bad goals. That was the difference.

Can’t really blame the coach, he has to play somebody. Too many injuries ATM. Maybe they talked to the doctor and Rienhart wasn’t ready…

  125. Bulging Twine says:

    ooh Talbot

    Well….

What a beautiful shot by Davidson! wow!
    Great game by him.
Nice ‘hard’ play in front of his net.

Nurse was holding his oblique/lower back at the 10:30 mark of the third.

3rd overall fade to open ice by Draisattl. Great, great saucer pass by Hall.

Purcell great quick hands on the goal. 3 weak giveaways along the boards.

I was thinking when there were a few weak calls against the Flames that if there ever actually was an NHL conspiracy we actually may benefit from it as they would want McDavid in the playoffs.

  126. HeatTreaterJoe says:

This kind of frustrating loss, with bullshit goals / non-goals felt like the norm last year. Shit happens, but call me naive, I don’t see this happening too many more times this season.

  127. LostBoy says:

    4-8

They had to win this game.

  128. oilswell says:

Some bad plays and not enough good work and the reffing was terrible all round.

But whomever decided to put Ference’s name on the roster sheet needs to wear that loss.

  129. Rondo says:

Oilers only have themselves to blame, they played a tired team, and played a sloppy game

  130. SK Oiler Fan says:

F off strombo. Sekara touched the puck first! Icing!

  131. SayItAin'tSo, Gretz, SayItAint'sSo! says:

    Centre of attention,

Andrew Ference has not at one point in their respective careers with the Oilers outplayed Mark Fayne.

  132. Bulging Twine says:

They need more from the 3rd and 4th line

  133. böök¡je says:

    Bookjepoints are back.

  134. boopronger says:

Its the same fucking shit every year, defense is never fixed, you can bring in every fucking goalie in the league not named price and they will be bad. Fuck .

  135. Woodguy says:

    Talbot, Ference, Gryba.

These 3 players should not play in the next few games.

    Garbage.

  136. SayItAin'tSo, Gretz, SayItAint'sSo! says:

I had a sinking feeling the minute that icing was called off. I don’t 100% trust Cam Talbot right now and that is not a good thing.

  137. oilswell says:

Centre of attention: Can’t really blame the coach, he has to play somebody. Too many injuries ATM. Maybe they talked to the doctor and Rienhart wasn’t ready…

Fayne? I understand sending a message, but shorten the D bench. It’s not like they’ve been pushing a vet D corps back to back or anything. What’s the average age of Klefbom-Nurse-Davidson-Gryba-Sekera?

  138. Centre of attention says:

    SayItAin’tSo, Gretz, SayItAint’sSo!:
    Centre of attention,

Andrew Ference has not at one point in their respective careers with the Oilers outplayed Mark Fayne.

Ference wasn’t 100% at fault for tonight. he is a convenient whipping boy but Talbot threw the game with 2 awful goals against. Suspect we see Nilsson vs Philly.

Wouldn’t it be hilariously Oilers to call up Scrivens?

  139. Halfwise says:

Between the icing non-call and the shitty goaltending and the called-off goal and TFCAF, that was definitely not a game where the paying fans got their money’s worth. Even the tier 3 fans like me who are watching on free TV.

  140. Professor Q says:

I wasn’t able to see the game and only heard a bit of the final 9 minutes.

I take it it didn’t go well? Two disallowed goals and a non-call icing that allowed a Calgary goal?

  141. böök¡je says:

    G Money:
Ference and Cam Scrivens certainly wear this.

But the Oilers got outworked and outplayed by a terrible team on a guaranteed loss night.

    Inexcusable.

    Exactly

    Fire the coach

    Woodguy,

The other person that deserves a swift kick in the ass tonight is Pouliot. Since he has been here there have been three (counting tonight) games where he has taken an offensive zone penalty in the last 3minutes of a tied game.

I have absolutely zero tolerance for that kind of selfish play

  143. leadfarmer says:

    Lowetide,

How is it on the coach. Other than not pulling Scrivens I can’t really blame him. Ference and Gryba played 13 and 14 minutes. MacT made sure that Ference remains on the roster no matter what. He lost two starting dmen to injury so he used him. Most of the d men are too one dimensional or not effective enough. Fault is Chias for not giving him the guns for the season.

  144. dsr29 says:

Lowetide please don’t say the Oilers let anyone off the hook when the goalie gave 2 goals to the Flames. Bad goaltending. Sounds familiar. Work their butts off to come back and that’s what happens. Talbot has been average at best. Young team needs better goaltending.

  145. Rondo says:

Todd McLellan deserves some blame for playing Ference.

  146. Lowetide says:

Dear Mark Fayne: Well, I hope you learned your lesson.

  147. lynn says:

I hope the players are angry after a loss like that. The coach has to be better too. Some of the players don’t deserve Chia’s 20-game show-me period. The verdict is in on some guys.

  148. SayItAin'tSo, Gretz, SayItAint'sSo! says:

    Centre of attention,

Agreed, Talbot set the barn on fire tonight. The game reminds of the Scriven’s adventure against Vancouver last year. He did everything in his power that game to make sure the Oilers lost. Talbot was bad against Montreal and he was very bad tonight.

Ference should not play NHL hockey anymore. Full stop

  149. flyfish1168 says:

Oilers next game isn’t till tuesday. If i was TMac the boys including goalies are going to have a major bag skate and puck battle tomorrow.

  151. Gret99zky says:

Fat, self-satisfied after that fluke win against the Habs. This team has miles and miles to get back to respectability. 10 years out of the playoffs.

  152. Yak Efron says:

Can we get some slow mo enhanced CSI replays of who actually touched the puck first on that icing, please?

  153. Receptor Antagonist says:

Not to make any excuses for Talbot, it was in fact a terrible goal. But I have no doubt that he was dumbfounded by the no icing call and that’s what made him lose focus. You could almost see him let up and then have an “oh shit I can’t believe that’s not icing” moment and scramble to catch up to the play.

I’m not generally one to bitch about officiating, but this is two games already this season that the officials played a deciding factor in the outcome and that should be unacceptable. Just fucking brutal.

  154. SK Oiler Fan says:

This team is average on their best day. Can’t afford to have this many anchors against a bad team.
Chia fix the damn D already! What a waste of everybody’s time!
And Fk are the 3 and 4 lines a black hole for O! Did they have a scoring chance? How did MacT put it? You have to be at least a threat to score at some point!
Overreaction on most of the above ad course considering Scrivens was between the pipes

  155. frjohnk says:

I really wanted to see McDavid playing in the 3 on 3.

Team battled back from being down and having what I think was a goal taken away. Gotta like that. We would not have seen that in years prior.

Super happy for Draisaitl and Davidson Hall was a beast.

    Tough way to lose though.

  156. russ99 says:

    SayItAin’tSo, Gretz, SayItAint’sSo!:
    Centre of attention,

Andrew Ference has not at one point in their respective careers with the Oilers outplayed Mark Fayne.

Absolutely true, but we’ve been begging for real player accountability from our coaching staff for a near decade. Fayne slacked off, and McLellan had to make an example. I applaud it.

I blame MacT for the extra year and NMC to a declining player with an inflated value due to a cup win. Either of those conditions are removed and Ference isn’t an Oiler this year.

  157. hags9k says:

With the rusted scrap heap of a D corpse we are running with, we are in deep shit trouble even with good tending. With below average tending forget about it.

That’s also one if the worst showing for Ference I’ve ever. I feel for the guy. Player and team are in a tough spot here, but buddy is done.

Wish Hall would have seen Nuge coming in late on that tight 3 on 2…Fucking flames.

  158. SayItAin'tSo, Gretz, SayItAint'sSo! says:

    Receptor Antagonist,

I am tired of referees being exempt from having to face the mob after fucking up a play. Players, coachers, GMs, owners etc all have to face the music. Referees nothing. I don’t like that and if we are going to continue giving them more and more discretion through reviews they have to own up to their decisions.

  162. SayItAin'tSo, Gretz, SayItAint'sSo! says:

    russ99,

I agree with MacT comment but not so with Fayne. You can make an example of him but still dress him and have him on the bench, that way you at least have the option of a stabilizing player if and when you need them (god damn it would have been nice to draw Sekera-Fayne in that third). Andrew Ference is done playing NHL hockey. NO matter the situation the Oilers are not better when he is on the ice.

  163. oilswell says:

Centre of attention: he is a convenient whipping boy but Talbot threw the game with 2 awful goals against

The Oilers probably deserved to lose without Ference but that doesn’t change the fact that someone didn’t ice the best team and that could have made the difference even with Talbot suckage.

  164. SayItAin'tSo, Gretz, SayItAint'sSo! says:

    G Money,

I really hope this is still a lingering injury issue. If not we may have been sold a bill of goods…

  165. Centre of attention says:

    Positives from tonight:

Hall is in fact NOT a bum, extends his point streak to 5 games with a huge 3 point night.

The flames forgot about Drai, who was still Drai, picking up 3 points as well.

McDavid looked wicked on the PK and was getting chances all night, couldn’t cash though 🙁

    Davidson impressed.

We might see a trade go down to improve the defense due to the raging tire fires heating up Chiarelli’s feet.

  166. oilswell says:

    Rondo:
Todd McLellan deserves some blame for playing Ference.

    Lowetide:
Dear Mark Fayne: Well, I hope you learned your lesson.

Fayne’s takeaway? “I only need to be better than Ference”?

  167. jake70 says:

Oilers this year are the worst team in hockey history breaking out of their zone, and that is WITHOUT pressure on them. I thought Talbot made some big saves that could have had Calgary leading 6-2, but I think that is the 2nd one of those this year he has let in, Dubnyk did same in his last year with Oil.

This left a bad taste in my mouth. That is 3/12 games that they weren’t ready to start. This was a very serious problem last year and it just shows a lack of commitment in my mind. You have to realize the opportunity and man coming up dry like this was just a very very bad outcome.

Between the phantom goalie interference, the lacklustre goaltending, the awful final goal in the last ten seconds, the near comeback and the fact that this was against the Flames, I can’t imagine a more frustrating set of circumstances.

And the Oilers did not perhaps deserve to win all that much, but is there a team that has a more undeserved win than the Flames in this one?

There has to be no team in history that makes it more difficult for themselves than the Oilers. You watch any other game in the NHL, seriously any other game, and I don’t know how you can’t be left baffled as to how other teams have it so easy to do the simple things. Breaking out with the puck, setting up on the PP, etc.
I say it every game, why is it so hard for even McD to get a pass? He has to almost create an ungodly take-away just to get the puck.

I would agree with you if Pouliot actually took a penalty. It was borderline diving, but the D-man (I think Widemann) fell of his own volition. It just wasn’t even close to a penalty.

Cassie Campbell is a terrible TV personality

Fuck Talbot for tonight. Talbot wears this, sorry. You can pick apart the stats all you want but the Oilers claw back from 4-2 (in no small part due to Talbot) and Talbot lets in a goal that I wouldn’t let in 9 times out of 10 if you strapped pads to me. All that happens before that goal is meaningless. If you watch before, he did not re-focus after the non-icing call until it was too late. 5-7 or even 4-7-1 is far different from 4-8.

  179. oilswell says:

We actually hired him for far better than that. Bachmann could have prevented that “shit from happening too.” We hired him to win us games and to keep us in games. Taking us out of games shouldn’t even be a question with him.

  187. G Money says:

By the way, Caramel the other day asked what the ‘real world meaning’ of DFA60 was.

I didn’t have an answer then, but after mulling the underlying numbers, I realized it does in fact have an actual real world meaning, and a very valuable one at that.

Basically, what danger Fenwick is doing is normalizing shots to be ‘average shots’.

So if you gave up 20 shots, but they were all twice as dangerous as an average shot, you’d get tagged with 40 shots against.

So it equalizes shots given up the same way ‘adjusted sv%’ adjusts a goalies performance based on equalizing the shots given up.

So by that token, Klef and Davidson had an incredible night – 15 ‘average’ shots given up over 60 minutes is an incredible number.

Conversely, Ference and Gryba were giving up ‘average’ shots at the equivalent rate of 45+ a night when they were on the ice.

    Think about that.

  188. SayItAin'tSo, Gretz, SayItAint'sSo! says:

    G Money,

Hall for Captain. You heard it here first. Who’s with me?

  193. Woogie63 says:

I just watched that icing for the 15th time. The back linesman still has his hand up calling icing, the backside linesman (who is in no ones view) calls no icing and then Sekera indeed touches the puck. Pretty bad.

  194. Halfwise says:

    Woogie63:
Help me understand icing.Sekera is at least tied with the Flame and touches the puck first (without a doubt), but it is not icing? Is this a first over the dot thing?

Completely agree that the play should have been blown dead when Sekera touched the puck. The linesman up ice had put his hand in the air when the puck was fired down the ice, and no one touched it until it ringed the boards.

This team is fragile enough as it is without having to play against the zebras.

You have a chance to beat a rival and crush their season at the end of a tough stretch of games for them and you blow it. You ice players who are not even replacement level. You give the game away. Fuck. Fuck. Fuck.

Sekera got killed tonight, but fuck if he doesn’t have the highest expectations placed on him by a fanbase who has been chewing up and spitting out his player type since Poti. Stupid guy should have just took less money somewhere else where his role would soften the impact of his shortcomings.

We knew he was 2 or 3 defensemen. He’s played most of the season as a 2 or higher and done well in that capacity with a partner who just got healthy scratched.

Meanwhile fucking YEG media mob boss Spector can’t figure out through his shitty glasses what good things Sekera does on the ice.

It’s amazing how we’re only allowed to have one, maybe two of these guys on our D corpse at a time. Every fucking season.
