OILERS AT NO. 63: MARKUS NIEMELAINEN

Markus Niemelainen is a Peter Chiarelli defenseman. He is 6.06, 205 and mobile, with much of his value on the defensive side of the puck. He is the first of what I hope are several OHL kids chosen today.

  • Bob McKenzie: No. 38
  • Corey Pronman: No. 68
  • Craig Button: No. 36
  • Corey Pronman: Niemelainen was a fine two-way player for Saginaw this season. He’s a fantastic skater for a defender of his size, moving effortlessly around the ice. His skill isn’t high-end, but he moves the puck at a solid-to-average level, showing good hands and coordination for a player his size, and decent offensive instincts.

I am certain the Oilers love this player.

Well alright then. Big dmen are always on the menu.

  2. doritogrande says:

You hammered this player type this year.

It’s too bad the Oilers don’t share your feelings, but we’ll give him 5 years.

  3. Woodguy says:

Listening to CHED interview this young man.

Talked about the adjustment due to language and culture.

    Wonder what his splits were?

  4. match eddy says:

Not sure where their numbers are coming from but NHL site has him as 6’4″ and 198. Either some discrepancy somewhere, or this kid grew a bit in the last year

  5. jonrmcleod says:

From the previous thread: If you want to look on the bright side, the Oilers took 3 guys who were rated by some as first rounders.

Also, he’s quite young and had to adjust going from Europe to the CHL.

  6. Tarkus says:

    THN had him ranked 28th.

  7. SumOil says:

22 out of 27 points on ES

  8. Alpine says:

Probably has 4/5 upside. That’s fine at 63. He can skate and move the puck which is good enough for me.

  9. Klima's_Bucket says:

    Wasted pick.
The guy shoots left after all.

  10. Woodguy says:

    SumOil:
22 out of 27 points on ES

    That’s a nice sign.

  11. HugThePost says:

he better not show up at TC with funky sideburns

  12. Younger Oil says:

    Seems like a good bet.

2nd on his team for points by D.

    Can’t have enough Finns.

Would have preferred a RHD but I’m happy.

  13. Ben says:

LT: Any particular rationale for having him so much lower than other draft reports/McKenzie?

  14. npanciroli says:

    SumOil:
22 out of 27 points on ES

    Not bad.

  15. Younger Oil says:

Allard could still slip to us.

    Fingers crossed.

  17. tcho says:

Ranked in the 30s by McKenzie, and we pick him up with #63. Not sure how to react other than WOOOOOT!

  18. NYCOIL "Gentleman Backpacker" says:

Curious what you mean by “Chiarelli defenseman.”

You mean good defensemen? Chia signed Krug and got Boychuk and Chara. Those are 3 different types.

I see Chia having a preferred winger type, but not sure what his D type is.

  19. npanciroli says:

If we draft all the LHD eventually we will create a demand and get RHD for cheap. Right?

  20. Lowetide says:

    Ben:
LT: Any particular rationale for having him so much lower than other draft reports/McKenzie?

My list punishes lack of offense. Same as Hajek and a few others. Does not mean he has terrible value, but my list loves offense.

  21. SumOil says:

    whoops 19* of 27 and not 22

  22. NYCOIL "Gentleman Backpacker" says:

Ferrarro on 1040 radio waxing poetic on Puljujarvi. Woot woot.

  23. Younger Oil says:

Beau Bennett can’t be worth much more than Yakupov, can he?

  24. Tarkus says:

Nashville now with Allard and Girard.

    Restocking the D pipeline, I see…

  25. Jaxon says:

Will Filip Berglund last to 84? Big offensive RHD. Do it.

  26. Woodguy says:

Beau Bennett goes to NJD for a 3rd.

    Shero trying to add offence.

Yak’s gotta be worth much, much more than Bennett.

  27. Younger Oil says:

NASHVILLE QUIT DRAFTING ALL THE RHD DAMMIT

  28. Tarkus says:

    WPG takes Green.

Sambrook still out there for RHD.

  29. HugThePost says:

I thought Yak would have been dealt by now.

  30. monsterbater says:

So yak for a pick less likely now? Either keep or trade for other failed prospect or throw in

  31. Acumen says:

Damn. Would have loved Fox. Hope Sambrook falls to us.

What was the name of that Swedish RHD that LT and SwedishPoster liked so much? Think he may have been an over ager? Is he still around?

  32. Evilas says:

    Jaxon,

He will probably still be on the board into the 5th

  33. NYCOIL "Gentleman Backpacker" says:

    Jaxon:

I have a candle lit for him.

Like Going way off the board? They’re not doing that.

  35. Younger Oil says:

Devils quietly making some pretty good picks.

  37. NYCOIL "Gentleman Backpacker" says:

Alpine: Like Going way off the board? They’re not doing that.

exactly. so far no moroz, no abney, no hesketh.

  38. slopitch says:

At least this fin can skate. He’s 3 years out, I don’t care about LHD vs RHD. I’m fine with this pick. Still pumped about Puljarrvi.

  39. doritogrande says:

Day goes to the Rangers? Is that their first pick today?

  40. Acumen says:

Filip Berglund. That’s the guy. Take him or Sambrook and I’m happy!

  41. The Trade Guy says:

Libor Hajek would be interesting in that he was the first overall pick in the import draft and was projected to be a first rounder. The Blades are a complete mess and they seem to diminish everything they touch. If scouts like his game and figure the dysfunction of the team is having an effect on him then the Pittsburgh pick is a nice place to nab him.

ON edit disregard he went 37th overall lol

  42. Younger Oil says:

Guaranteed one of Sambrook or Berglund if we want them.

    Preferably both.

  43. Tarkus says:

EDM guaranteed one of Sambrook or Berglund.

  44. Stelio Kontos says:

Sweet picture. Reminds me of this kid https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G7RgN9ijwE4

  45. Evilas says:

This is great, check it out. Berglund is 178 on this aggregate list.

Refresh every few minutes to see who is still on the board

  46. NYCOIL "Gentleman Backpacker" says:

    doritogrande:
Day goes to the Rangers? Is that their first pick today?

    first pick BOTH days.
They gave 20th for Yandle for a year (and duclair and moore).

Chayka parlayed that into Chychrun. Ouch.

  47. match eddy says:

    The Trade Guy,

    Tampa grabbed him at 37

  48. Younger Oil says:

    Oilers draft Matthew Cairns.

  49. Pastor of Disaster says:

    Pick 76: Rem Pitlick
An amalgamation of Oiler 3rd liners

    Pick 77: Connor Hall
    An amalgamation of Oiler supernovas

Is there a player named Gator Coffey we can draft at 84?

  50. doritogrande says:

Edmonton goes back to the Big Red.

  51. Alpine says:

    Alpine,

You miss the part where Benson has skill?

  52. npanciroli says:

    Don’t know anything about Cairns

  53. Centre of attention says:

The Oilers spit the bit on this pick. Left way too much skill on the board, too many RHD with more offense and skills were left. This kid reminds me of Ben Betker.

It’s going to be awesome when he stagnates in the Oilers system due to 1000000000 LHD ahead of him on the list.

Disappointing, but it just a 3rd round pick. I’ve seen worse.

  54. Younger Oil says:

That does not look like a good pick by the Oil.

    OJHL.

    LHD.

Disappointing with good RHD on the board.

  55. doritogrande says:

    #145 on LT’s board. 84 (go figure) on THN’s.

  56. SwedishPoster says:

Got to have all the LHD.

  57. Younger Oil says:

    145 on LT’s list.

  58. Tarkus says:

Guys, we pick again at 91. Sambrook and Berglund still out there.

  59. Centre of attention says:

Another bad pick by the Oilers.

This is the awful drafting we know and love!

  60. Centre of attention says:

    Tarkus:
Guys, we pick again at 91.Sambrook and Berglund still out there.

Do you think they are actually going to take someone useful?

  61. Alpine says:

LHD but whatever, probably won’t be ready for a few years when the handedness thing might not matter.

  62. monsterbater says:

Calm down people. They have pick 91 coming up and there will be RHD available.

  63. Younger Oil says:

That kind of stinks of throwing a scout a bone.

Same two RHD should be on the board at 91, cone on guys!

  64. Chamucks says:

They aren’t going walk about at all. Stop acting like you know exactly how 3rd rounders will end up.

  65. NYCOIL "Gentleman Backpacker" says:

1040 radio loves Benson. They’ve been watching him all year, remember.

  66. Tarkus says:

EDM again guaranteed one of Sambrook or Berglund at 91.

Comfort pick for Puljujarvi. Typical. *rolls eyes*

Got to have all the LHD.

We have to snag them alll? Weird choice…..

  69. SumOil says:

next 2 picks can be sambrook and berglund

  70. maxwell_mischief says:

i mean the Oilers wouldnt want to have 2 good drafts in a row
puljujarvi only player from the draft so far who will play

  71. Shizuka says:

Ohh, Filip Berglund. Some will be happy here.

  72. Shizuka says:

Blowing the candle out. woot woot

  76. cadooo says:

Surprised Josh Anderson drafted so high. I guess McKenzie had him at 61. I saw him good this year but he doesn’t have much for offensive numbers and he plays for PG Cougars. I’ll be interested to see what he becomes.

  77. Oil2Oilers says:

Niemelainen according to audio from Craig Button, played on a horrible Saginaw team that fired coaches mid season. Add this to culture shock, language challenges and young age I am happy with this pick.

I hope he is in a better situation next year.

  78. Rondo says:

Kirk Luedeke has Markus Niemelainen in a mock draft at #29

  79. NYCOIL "Gentleman Backpacker" says:

Really beginning to love the Niemelainen pick. This youtube package is a must-watch.

He has such poise and looks to me like he has a very good hockey brain. He passes the puck, but then doesn’t back off. Moves his feet and gets to an open position to create an outlet for his teammate.

At:2:40 you can see the Niemelainen to Puljujarvi combo as well and it is drool-worthy.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Szu0m3OxF38

  80. wheatnoil says:

Did some digging on Niemelainen and threw it up on Twitter.

Basically he shot 1.1% last year, so either he had a comically bad shot or he got a bit unlucky, which would hurt his offense. He got 19 of his points at even-strength, which is not a gaudy total but he did lead his team in even-strength scoring (among D) despite being a North American rookie and being the youngest regular defender on the team. Todd Cordell added that he was paired with “the worst defender in the OHL” as well.

So, this is a guy who is a CHL rookie from Europe, struggled with language & culture, on a terrible team, as mentioned above had his coach fired halfway through the season & had a ridiculously low shooting percentage. He’s got size & mobility, scouts like him, ranked higher on the McKenzie…

I’ve really come around on this pick. His offense may be undervalued. Good 3rd round choice!

  81. Rondo says:

    wheatnoil,

Kirk Luedeke knows quite a bit about this player would make a good guest on LT’s show
