BREAKING: HALL TO NEW JERSEY

The Edmonton Oilers have traded Taylor Hall to the New Jersey Devils. It is a terrible trade. Defenseman Adam Larsson is the returning piece in the deal, and addresses the need for help at RHD for the organization.

As you know, dealing Hall was always going to be a very difficult thing to do, and I have mentioned the Gary Carter trade as a comparable. For me, that comparable fits better today—even though there is only one returning piece—as Edmonton deals the best player in the trade and is instantly poorer for it. Larsson has a cap hit of $4.166 million and is signed through 2021.

ADAM LARSSON 2015-16

I don’t think the presser started

PaperDesigner: How did Taylor Hall pay the price? He’s free! He got away from the organization!

Good point, I was assuming he didn’t want to be traded. Also now he’s in NJ. I don’t see them making the playoffs anytime soon either. Look at his NHL career, that much drive & talent wasted on the Oilers & now the Devils. You don’t feel for the guy at all?

    Anybody watching the Chia presser

    Yep. Chiarelli looks really rattled.

  4. Statsman says:

As some wise man once said, sometimes you have to lose a trade to achieve balance.
Rumblings around the rink in the past year from some pretty connected people indicated that Hall was not very coachable (i.e. he kind of did things his own way). They would ask him to do something (or not do something, like giving the puck away consistently in dangerous areas) and he would comply for a period or so. Then, next period he would be back to his old ways, disregarding the wishes of the coaching staff.

This might have been the main reason for the trade and for his diminished value around the league.

We probably high fived over the Atlantic. Canadian wife for me!

  6. bergerstroni says:

I really love this move by Chia. A good young defenceman and they get rid of a guy who probably wasn’t helping to elevate the play of those around him. When you look down the road after McDavid has been captain for a few years, everyone will be very thankful that the character of McDavid shaped the team and not the after the individualistic Hall-type player.

I have played team sports and nothing drove me more nuts than having superior talent on our team and getting beat because the other team had more cohesion and selfless play. Keep it going Chia! You’re doing good things there and you have more faith from this guy than ever before.

  7. Jon K says:

    AsiaOil:
You confuse questions with conclusions – I made no conclusions other than mgmt seeing Hall as trade-able – reasons are unclear. I would however suggest that being an idiot is pretty low on the list of likely reasons. You can lay this trade on Lowe’s door and how screwed up the Oilers development program has been for over a decade. No veteran leadership to guide these young men and anyone who tried was drummed out of town.

This is a huge issue that has been unaddressed forever. I remember it was a point of discussion around here in the first few years of the rebuild v2.0 (~2010).

How exactly is it fair to expect 18 and 19 year old players to act and perform like veteran professionals WHEN YOU HAVE NO VETERAN SKILL PLAYERS.

Edit: Do you really think Andrew Ference had a lot of tips to pass along to Hall on how to improve as a player? Conversely, do you think Adam Oates would have? Or Jagr? Or Iginla? (Or Lucic?)

Hemsky was the closest we’ve had since Pronger and Smytty left, and he wasn’t suited to a leadership role.

Team out of balance will find a way to perform accordingly. We are still paying for mistakes made under Lowe, Tambo and MacT.

  8. CrazyCoach says:

match eddy: I feel bad for Larsson. The epic terribleness of this trade is going to follow him for his oilers career.

Long as he doesn’t emulate Jimmy Carson in his time here, eats 23-27 minutes a night, he’ll be fine!

  13. Drew says:

westcoastjos: That may be true, but the other moves that Chiarelli make will show us what he had in mind from a team based perspective and what he intends with all the pieces that he is moving. This single trade was poor, but that isn’t to say that the other moves that he has left to make will also be poor too. I get that emotions are high, but when emotions are high, the best thing to do is take a step back and maintain a balanced perspective as best as one can.

The Oilers are saving just under $2 million a year, which allows them to make some other deals that they may have not been able to make. There are other variables at play here that do have a ripple effect on what Chiarelli is able to do with other moves/trades/signings.

reduce salary somewhere else, cull the bottom feeders; korsp etc. keep the very valuable assets that are in short supply.

Chiarelli “I felt strongly about this player” (Larsson).

I hate when these guys zero in. It shows the flaw in the decision-making of so many of these guys. The executive level personnel is just so weak compared to other businesses of this size.

  19. theres oil in virginia says:

Jon K: It’s not BS. If it was Yost wouldn’t have posted it. Only a few teams had what the Oilers wanted, so we can probably piece it together that Chiarelli was only interested in speaking to a few teams. Make sense? It’s stupid, but logical.

To be clear, I’m saying the the statement is BS, not that Yost made it up. The whole league knew that Hall was being shopped. Chiarelli isn’t going to refuse to answer a call from someone making an offer. The statement is framed like Hall being traded was a complete shock to him (the unnamed exec). Bullshit.

I don’t agree. The comment speaks to a GM zeroing in on a player rather than a value and moving ahead without asking for final offers.

    This almost never works.

Ah, sorry. Yeah that’s certainly possible. Chia and the Oilers have no shortage of media or executives who like to make them look bad, the few times the Oilers need help in that department.

To be fair, we need either a guy who can play top pairing or a guy who can play top 4 now and isn’t finished growing. If we’re not getting a guy like Larsson or PK, then we shouldn’t trade Hall at all.

That said, Larsson needed to come with Henrique.

To be clearer, I’m not assessing the trade here. I’m only assessing the comment made by the exec. Younger Oil posted above that an exec (prob same one) would have put together a package of picks and lesser players. Magic beans! Sounds like he may be pissed that Chiarelli went with another offer and now is trashing him. Just a guess.

  36. LMHF#1 says:

My guess? Oilers acquire another RHD for the PP. Possibly Barrie in another significant player “shakeup”.

  38. BONVIE says:

We could have traded Yakapov to get Larson. We just traded one of our only veterans the best player by far, for a prospect basically Nurse or Reinhart, the only difference in these defenseman is that Larsson was in a great environment playing with defensive forwards in front of him that back check, a defensive system, playing with veteran d man. Welcome to Edmonton Larson the prospect expected to be a first pair DMan! Oh boy this can’t be good.

    What the what what??

Subban was traded after he made the Hall trade. He’s the one who passed, probably because the price was too high since we didn’t have a RHD to send back.

Really? A shouting match? You ever been around a 20-something kid who is really serious about something and then gets a huge disappointment? I’d wager he was closer to tears.

There are other ways to find money.

Each transaction must be evaluated both individually and as part of a plan.

First 2 notable Chiarelli trades as an Oiler :

    Hall for Larsson

16th overall pick, 33rd overall pick for Griffin Reinhart.

That’s a very good start for worst ever tenure as a GM for one organization.

  55. rickithebear says:

So oin a PP you either want a PP QB with 4 forwards.

    and
saw the shit Show Pk was with out Gorges at even and Markov tro feed on PP.

    Bergevin gets Webers PP sjhot.

Now we have commented on Davidson’s shot and how might it do on PP.
welllhe got 23 min of PP time this year.

HIs PPG/60 was #1 in the NHL just ahead of Shea Weber.

Sekera’s PPGF as a PPQB was better than subban’s.
so if you do noyt mind I want
top 10 PP minutes for Davidson and Sekera as a Pair. with Davidson on LH and Sekera on RH.

Almost all HOPE is gone now 😉

I recall the Taylor-Tyler debate and concluded that the Oilers should lean to the center but understood why they went for Hall and loved him from the beginning.

My youngest was born a couple of weeks after the draft and was jumping in his jolly-jumper beside me in the basement of our old house as we watched Taylor Hall score his first NHL goal. It was a nice moment between father and his oblivious son.

I’ve been in a hockey pool with a bunch of guys since I was in undergrad – more than a quarter century now. My last win, a few years back, was capped by a Hall jersey to commemorate the occasion – he was a key part of that year’s win and I figured it was a safe, cornerstone piece who would go to the rafters as an Oiler.

My son turns 6 in a couple of weeks and will not really understand why I’m looking so sad today. It will pass – I’m getting to the age where I say that about far worse loses than a favourite hockey player being traded – but it will take a little while.

Now I am a huge fan of Larsson and was really hoping that Chia might be able to get him out of Jersey – but not for this price.

I like our D more today than yesterday. I really do and having Klefbom (22) and Larsson (23) there until 2021 is fantastic.

There are more pieces to come, there always are. If the whole is better at the end of the process, it may have been the right process.

Chia, you made this relationship a lot harder today but I continue to trust.

Your insane 😄, seriously though we’re talking about a Defenseman that is basically still at the prospect level, he is in a defensive system surrounded by defensive forwards who back check, and paired with veterans on Defense. He will becoming to Edmonton with no veteran D to shelter him and he just got traded for Edmonton’s best defensive winger.

Chiarelli talks similarly of Larsson than what he did of Reinhart. Rest assured, he has an eye for talent and knows who can help “right away.”

    https://www.nhl.com/news/gm-chiarelli-puts-his-stamp-on-oilers-roster-at-draft/c-772716

“He’s a big, strong man,” Chiarelli said of Reinhart. “He thinks the game well. He moves the puck well. He’s the type of [defenseman] that we need. Now, he’s young, and you’ve gotta give these guys time, but I was excited to get him.”

    http://oilers.nhl.com/club/news.htm?id=772521

We’ve been hunting for defencemen and there’s a lot of intelligence on Griffin internally,” said Chiarelli. “I’ve always liked him as a player. He’s been behind a lot of good defencemen in Long Island. I’d had discussions with Garth, on and off over the last month or so. We just kind of ramped up those discussions. I saw him in pro a couple times last year. I saw him in London at the Memorial Cup and he was just a horse. Happy to get him. We had some guys at 16 we liked but this was something we decided to act on. He’s ready to play and he’s going to be a very good part of our D.”

Both Chiarelli and Green disclosed that they deem Reinhart ready to play in the NHL this season. They expect him to make the team out of camp.

“I would hope so, yeah,” said Chiarelli. “He’s a young defenceman. He’s still finding his way but he’s big, he’s strong, he’s very smart, can play a lot of minutes. And you know what? He’s a young D that we’re happy to have in our mix, that can grow with us and help us right away.”

  72. Strapping Jocks says:

Very underwhelming return for one of the top LW in the game, who is on a good contract.

Fingers crossed there are some other moves and signings to help make sense of this.

  73. AsiaOil says:

Lucic really must be coming to town as the second shoe to drop – and if Demers joins him – then LW is fine and the defense is light years better. Many people here are seriously over-valuing the Oilers wingers. Dmen (and especially RHD) are the new elite pieces. it’s a bit like what’s happened in football where the offensive line is now viewed as key – especially OT – and especially blind-side OT.

After RHD it’s LHD, then RHC then LHC. WIngers are way down the list in terms of impacting the game. Look at Ovechkin – a guy light years better than Hall and he can’t push his team over the top as a winger. Keep the fast talented centers, build a big mobile passing defense, and get bigger two-way wingers who can skate, finish and work the boards.

The team finished 29th again last year – the problems are deep and cuts to fix it will be as well. There is more to come.

Great point. More moves to come. Don’t judge the trade until we see what other pieces fall into place. Likely one in a series of moves this off season.

  81. Truth says:

If Chia manages to move Hall for Larsson, Demers, and Lucic he should be knighted.

So if he managed to have Hall, Lucic, and Demers for absolutely nothing on Friday he would be anointed King?

  82. BONE207 says:

Angry funny gang here today. I cried when Gretz was traded & I’ll cry today. Whether this works out for us or not,we still have Connor & PoolParty. New era…new balance…new outlook…

  83. Pechetr says:

The Oilers couldn’t get better than an offer of a fourth rounder at the draft for Yakupov. Talk about over valuing your assets…

  84. delooper says:

I’m okay with the trade. The lack of balance on the Oilers was far worse a blow than losing Hall.

If the Lucic and Demers deals happen, the Oilers are likely to be a really fun-to-watch team again in the fall.

If Yakupov stays, he’ll probably have a lot more opportunities, too. Could be a great season for him to build his game.

Of course, if Klefbom continues to be brittle, it’s less clear to me where this team is.

  85. Pechetr says:

    HeatTreaterJoe,

First of all I hadn’t seen the presser yet. Secondly. My point was we always assume we know what is going on in the room. You’ll notice Chia stated many of Hall’s assets but the term great leader or good in the room or well liked by his team mates was never mentioned…..

  86. Frank the dog says:

HeatTreaterJoe: Yes we do… Chia just confirmed in his presser that Taylor Hall thought he was going to be part of the solution in Edmonton.Blaming unknown behind-the-scenes issues to justify losing a Hall trade doesn’t hold water… not after Chia’s presser.

We don’t know what went on behind the scenes but it’s safe to assume that Hall did not ask out.

  87. khildahl says:

    Chachi:
Yeesh. No pressure Connor, you are going to have to drive this bus all by yourself now.

Pay no attention to the missing front tire. The guy at the shop stole it while he was replacing a broken window.

  88. Chachi says:

khildahl: Pay no attention to the missing front tire. The guy at the shop stole it while he was replacing a broken window.

“Also, the breaks don’t work, but here’s a parachute you can throw out the window when you want to slow down.”

  89. stush18 says:

Haha holy fuck what a day

  90. Lucinius says:

    I’ve calmed down a bit.

Trade is still bad, but it is possible to loss the battle (trade), but win the war (make the team better). Trade adds a much needed piece (top 4 RD), at the cost of one of our best players.. who plays a comparably expendable role (productive top line winger). If you add in Lucic and Demers (or someone else) at semi-reasonable prices (and the Oilers freed up another million in cap space with this trade) the LW position doesn’t get a ton weaker (weaker, but not as massively), and defense gets a lot stronger.

We’ve seen for years what a really good core of top six forwards gets you; nothing. Without a defense to back them up they spend most of their time racing around in their own end.

So yeah; we lost the trade, and I’m not happy about it. However, the other off-season moves are critical to properly judge things, because while Lucic coming here doesn’t technically impact the Hall trade.. realistically it does because you need to judge things in context.

Lastly, regarding other GMs having been able (and willing) to offer better than Larsson for Hall; I don’t doubt it. What I doubt is that any other GM was offering a better RHD for Hall, and that’s the key. We didn’t need more picks. Or wingers. Or LHD. We needed RHD and they aren’t common.

Shit, just look at what Montreal paid to part with Subban. Weber (great player, but on the wrong side of the curve). Why? Because they wanted to move Subban and also be able to replace him to some degree with the same trade.

Also, quick mention on the ‘why didn’t they just trade Hall for Subban!?’ stuff; because Montreal wanted a defenseman coming back. Rumour I heard (from a guy in the front office of an NHL team; albeit very low on the totem pole — accounting schmoe) was Montreal wanted a top 4 RHD + for Subban. Oilers didn’t have a top 4 RHD to trade, so the trade likely would have been something like Hall + Klefbom/Nurse + 1st rounder for Subban.. at best, imo.

  91. Kiltymcbagpipes says:

Still need a PP Dman boys preferably RHD. With Larsson on board Chia doesn’t have to deal out of desperation. Talk of Nuge for Dumba turned down by Chiarelli. If Fletcher adds a guy like Niederreiter you gotta think done deal don’t you? Sign Lucic and Helm forget Demers. Dumba would be paired with Sekera though. Is he ready?

Either that or sign Demers too and run Davy-Dumba 3rd pair with Nurse in AHL. Don’t think Oil want to do that though….

  92. Pechetr says:

    AsiaOil,

    This all day!

  93. delooper says:

The way I look at it is, while Hall is a great player, due to the Oilers weakness on D, adding Larsson makes most of the Oilers forwards significantly better. So player-for-player it might look bad, but team-to-team it’s a pretty decent trade.

  94. CrazyCoach says:

I see what they meant about Jason Gregor’s show.

I don’t how he’s going to work out as the President of Club Taylor, now that #4 is gone to NJ.

    It’s pretty funny.

You’ll have to wait a few years to hear Gregor rant about jackasses connected to the org whispering about Larsson. But they will.

  96. Professor Q says:

Have I missed something? What’s this about Gregor’s show?

  97. CrazyCoach says:

I love all these guys who phone into radio shows and preface their statement, “I have inside knowledge of the Oilers and…..”, especially when they want to support the host with a little rump kissing.

Believe me, it sounds ridiculous no matter how many times it’s said.

The only thing I can think of similar here in BC, is how many people’s distant relatives in this province went to high school with Bryan Adams! He must have been in high school for a 20 year period and transferred schools every 3 months to believe those stories.

  98. healthyscratch says:

What happens when Demers signs in New Jersey on Friday?

  99. CrazyCoach says:

Professor Q: Have I missed something? What’s this about Gregor’s show?

He’s going off on people who are questioning Hall’s character. He does have a valid point, but his passion and insistence makes me think if it were possible, he’d have his lips surgically removed and sewn to Hall’s ass.

  100. CrazyCoach says:

healthyscratch: What happens when Demers signs in New Jersey on Friday?

    Ohhhh, you nasty GF!

That’s as nasty as clear heels!

  101. Citadel says:

What the Oilers need(ed) is a shutdown defenceman who can eat up a lot of minutes and contribute on the powerplay.

I think it was clear that the Oilers weren’t going to get one guy that can do that. I see that Larsson is going to take care of the shutdown minute munching part. Larsson also make this defence tougher to play against. Opposition forwards are going to be playing against Larsson, Klefbom and Nurse. I kinda like the sound of that.

He might help on the power play and he’s a pretty good puck mover but I believe they’re going to bring in Jason Demers. That will give them two right shot D for the power play with Sekera and Klefbom on the left side.

I think we can all agree. 12:01 EDT Friday, Edmonton is going to announce the signing of Milan Lucic. There is zero chance of Chiarelli doing this deal without that deal in his hip pocket. The Demers deal? Not so sure but it might happen.

  102. Chicken Laser says:

    LoDog:
Thought there wouldbe a little plus to it but Larsson is a very good dman.

The Oilers are a better team.

Little one, eh? I’d put Larsson at about 4 10ths the value of a full, proper deal for Hall.

  103. russ99 says:

I’m less disappointed about this trade than that we couldn’t close the Subban deal.

Larsson is fairly reasonable value due to his age (closer to McDavid) and the cap savings which are considerable.

Now that Chia has committed to the McDavid cluster, why not deal Eberle and/or RNH too and really remake this team.

  104. jake70 says:

Bergevin doing some verbal skating on his trade.

Reporter: What makes your team better with Shea Webber than with PK Subban?

There are reasons we think we are better but I will not go into details about why we think that.

    GMs must hate these pressers.

  105. jake70 says:

Can someone who has the ambition do the splits (boxcars, advanced ..whatever) with Larsson in terms of all his stats — East vs. West conference? This would be my concern. Kopitar ,Toews, Getzlat et. al aren’t going anywhere for a while, despite getting a little older. Fayne was sent o the minors last year to give some perspective.

  106. delooper says:

“He’s not a sexy defenceman”. They should put that at the top of his stall.
