Meh. Looks like they’re gonna give LB a shot to win this job and put cap money elsewhere.

  2. "Steve Smith" says:

Don’t understand this one at all.

    Expansion draft.

Edit: Depends if it is for more than one year.

  4. HenryDrix says:

    Surely better options were available….

  5. gogliano says:

I guess the play is to save as much as possible on the backup and readjust in season if necessary.

  6. jfry says:

The monster actually had a really good season last year until the last month. Rask started horribly and Gus did great covering his bacon. He finished the season horribly, just like the entire bruins team and he had about three starts at the end of the season that destroyed his save percentage. Most the year he was hanging around in the mid teens and he actually put up some very good starts.

  7. Ducey says:

If he is no good he can be sent down and no cap hit.

  8. Mr DeBakey says:

    .908, Mid-level?

Like the Cuban Assassin used to give a “powerful left to the mid-section”?

    And then Broissoit comes up!

  10. PokeCheck says:

We don’t need a backup that can win games. That’s for playoff teams.

  11. Acumen says:

I like the signing. Khudobin was my choice but this seems like a decent bet as well.

  12. "Steve Smith" says:

    TSN says one year.

  13. kooler says:

    Mr DeBakey,

And Hercules Ayala with the bear hug.

  14. kooler says:

Sign Matt Martin….we can one of everything.

  15. monsterbater says:

It’s a solid meh deal. Only a year, gives LB chance to compete in camp. Small cap hit

Goalies are voodoo, no sense over analyzing a backup goalie signing

  16. Mr DeBakey says:

I keep getting this Google ad telling me to switch to Telus fibre.
I’m wondering if its better than oat bran?

  17. Jon K says:

Only thing that makes sense is they hired Gustavsson so they can say Brossoit had competition and won the backup. They obviously got the cheapest legit “NHL” backup they could get.

  18. AsiaOil says:

Top backups not coming here with LB having a 1 way deal. Too much risk of being sent down if LB pans out – and with career backups – if you go down you may never get back up.

  19. Lowetide says:

    Very curious about Demers.

  21. Lucinius says:

Not seeing any problem with this signing.

ya you’re right. Just had to hit that perfect middle ground in a guy that can be sent down if Brossoit kills it or can play 15-20 games if Brossoit doesn’t cut it. We don’t know who would have been OK with that

  23. tcho says:

Backup goalie’s a good place to look for acceptable value, I reckon. 20 games, don’t shit the bed, win around 50%.

  24. Little Poteet says:

Did Chia miss the memo that backups were supposed to be signed for 2 years this summer?

Matt Martin for cheap would be awesome but a few weeks ago it was reported he could get $2.5M a year for 4 years which would be a bit rich.

  29. russ99 says:

Dallas signed Hamhuis, looks like there’s one less competitor for Demers, if we’re still in.

  30. LadiesloveSmid says:

Martin does not play over Lucic, Pouliot, or Maroon. Marginally better than Hendricks? Definitely not worth it, especially with Caggiula/Slepy/Juju in the minors

  31. Professor Q says:

Bergevin apparently got Weber’s opinion/approval of Radulov before signing him.

  32. stevezie says:

    Larsson is another.

Yeah, it seems he doesn’t get my memos either. I think Wearsglasses filters his mail.

  36. BornInAGretzkyJersey says:

I would have preferred Zatkoff myself.

Gustavsson is injury prone, and Gord only knows we need less of that on this team.

That said, if he can stay healthy, play consistently average (0.910 SP or better) and improve his rebound control… this could be a good signing.

  37. The Hermit says:

    “Steve Smith”,

Brossoit was shaky during his end of season call up, now there’s competition for the backup goaler (I didn’t make that word up, someone did before me). 🙂

With 47 hours to digest and reflect on THE trade, a prediction and a challenge to the fine minds of this site:

Prediction: Oilers will improve overall points in the standings in 2016-17 season.

    Challenge: Explain statistically in detail.

I’m a passive contributor to the site (read:no time to read and properly analyze data, verbal only) but absolutely love and respect the bright minds and analysis on this site. The last two days have brought plenty of sorrow, gryst, and outcry to an otherwise balanced perspective.

Please, selfishly for my daily sanity during the dark winter days of 2016-17 take the summer to digest THE trade. Sit on the lake deck chairs in your flip flops with a cold beveridge, or a nectar of fine repute, watch the sunset, play with your kids, talk quietly to your trusted Dog, and look for the positive wherever it can be found. Find the faith and resolve that define OilerFan, the quiet desperate resiliency that’s driven hope that last 10 years.
June 29 was a watershed, and a metaphoric bloodletting. Watching the TH tribute on youtube took my son and I through the pain and false hope of the last 6 years. He could relate his minor hockey years to Taylor’s time in Edmonton. We had a moment. Now we move on.
Time will heal this wound. Eventually. I’m hopeful and looking forward to a renewed outlook for the Fall.

thank you everyone that contributes, and especially the Big dog, LT.

Connolly and Stempniak both good signings for WASH and CAR.

Would love a mid-range RW to push Kassian down to 4th while waiting for PoolParty.

I hope Chia gives Yak another shot. Like to see him get it together with the Oil.

Backups have inflated save percentages relative to starters (softer opposition, probably the lighter workload also makes a difference). Compare Gustavsson as a backup to Talbot as a backup.

I mean, it’s a backup goalie, so it’s not the most important signing on the team. But it’s also far from the least important.

TSN is showing 2 years, $10 million total for Colborne, so $5 million a year.

  59. "Steve Smith" says:

Philosophil: Prediction: Oilers will improve overall points in the standings in 2016-17 season.

Oh, there’s virtually no doubt about this. First, injury luck alone dictates some likely regression (on the other hand, if Talbot goes down, we may have a serious problem). Second, we no longer have Justin Schultz playing more than twenty minutes per game. Third, McDavid is presumably better this year than last year (besides being less injured, which is encompassed in my first point). So improvement was virtually inevitable even before Chiarelli got started.

Beyond that, the Hall-Larsson trade improves the team. But, as Caramel Batman would be pointing out if he was here, that’s not the right question (in point of fact, it’s really easy to make marginal improvements to terrible teams – what’s much tougher is to make marginal improvements to good teams, and the ones who succeed at that are the ones who win Stanley Cups). The question is whether this improves the team as much as other readily available avenues. And yes, we’re somewhat hamstrung by not knowing exactly what those other readily available avenues were, but we’ve got some information:
    1. It appears that the Oilers could have gotten Demers. A team with Hall and Demers is probably better than one with Lucic and Larsson. A team with Hall, Lucic, and Demers almost certainly is (though, to the extent that the Lucic contract is defensible, it’s defensible only because we lost Taylor Hall).
    2. Travis Yost quotes another GM as saying, for whatever it’s worth, that his team would have put together a better offer for Hall than New Jersey did. It’s tough to evaluate that without knowing what the better offer would have been, granted – but it’s some evidence that there was a better offer there.
    3. Somebody else (can’t remember who) quoted another NHL Exec as saying that Islanders actually *did* put together a better offer for Taylor Hall.
    4. There were apparently other options available using the fourth overall pick as a centrepiece, instead of Taylor Hall.
    5. There is widespread agreement (outside of Edmonton management and its sycophants, and the occasional ornery contrarian elsewhere) that the Oilers did not receive good value (Matt Cullen and Sean McIndoe are among my favourites on this point). It seems unlikely that so many people would be so far off as to what the trade market was.

So yes, of course the team will be better. But that doesn’t exonerate Chiarelli.

  60. Lucinius says:

I’d rather not see Duchene here. Not a fan of the player. I’d prefer RNH.

  61. JDï™ says:

    Brad,

With the Chiarelli Stamp™ now on this team, I think the chance Nurse is moved is Barrie low.

  62. "Steve Smith" says:

    The Hermit:
    “Steve Smith”,

Looks like they didn’t want to spend a lot of money for a backup goalie competition.

If the concern is budget over quality, why not wait out July 1 and see who’s languishing without a contract? That’s where you get bargains. It’s not where you get top flight players, but that doesn’t seem to have been the priority there.

  63. LadiesloveSmid says:

    Lucinius:
I’d rather not see Duchene here. Not a fan of the player. I’d prefer RNH.

I’d love Duchene here. Elite ES scorer, definitely more proven than RNH. Only 2 years older and on a similar contract.

  64. Younger Oil says:

OF17: TSN is showing 2 years, $10 million total for Colborne, so $5 million a year.

Darren Dreger ‏@DarrenDreger 12m12 minutes ago

Colborne to Colorado. 2 years, $2.5 mil per.

  67. "Steve Smith" says:

Younger Oil: Dreger could have read something wrong and thought it was $5M total instead of $5M per.

The way the day’s going, I think that’s got to be it – $5 million per fits in much better with the general trend. As well, TSN’s *still* saying $5 million per, and it seems unlikely that they wouldn’t correct it after this long. Assuming TSN is right, bullet dodged.

  68. Sugar Reijo says:

    Brad:
    Centre of attention,

    Nuge/Nurse for Duchene/Barrie.

Pretty sure I’ll hurt myself happy dancing if that happens.

  69. LadiesloveSmid says:

COL has potentially 6 LHD in the NHL next season. Beauchemin, Tyutin, Gelinas, Zadorov, Bigras, Wiercoch. Pretty insane that they’d consider moving Barrie.

If EDM gets Barrie for anything less than a huge overpay, the Larsson trade hurts a lot more. Could have had Hall+Barrie+say Klein

  70. "Steve Smith" says:

    Sugar Reijo,

Yeah, that would be a good trade. I think if he made that trade, then I’d actually say that Chiarelli had a good week overall, and I hate the Hall trade.

(I post this in advance so that I can’t try to reneg later once my perspective is coloured by my Chiarelli hate.)

Having said that, why does Colorado make that trade? It’s a downgrade for them at both positions, to say nothing of a move from RHD to LHD.

  71. OF17 says:

TSN Free Agent Tracker has changed it to 2 years, $2.5 million per. That’s the second thing I’ve noticed wrong with that list in the last 15 mins. At one point they had Michael Latta having signed with two different teams…

  72. Professor Q says:

With Colorado stacking up on D, I guess a trade is inevitable.

We don’t need to trade anyone else unless it involves Yak. But it may be worth keeping him for one more year, playing some 3rd line minutes and maybe a little PP. He’s an easy pick for an expansion team.

Make a FA signing. the other thing to consider is how many we can protect in the expansion draft. So take a chance on a FA D-man.

  77. LadiesloveSmid says:

    “Steve Smith”,

word is Roy thinks Barrie should be a #5D PP specialist and wants a “big, strong defence”. Nurse has a certain cachet around the league, I’d for sure do a 1-for-1 swap if that was on the table

Demers is waiting to see if the Oilers get Barrie or not. There is just too much pointing to that. He obviously has multiple deals on the table, waiting to see if he has a place on McDavids team I bet.

  80. "Steve Smith" says:

    LadiesloveSmid:
I’d for sure do a 1-for-1 swap if that was on the table

Oh, without the slightest hesitation. Going into the off-season, I had Nurse and Draisaitl identified as our two players most likely to have greater perceived value than actual value, so they were who I was hoping we’d trade.

(At the extreme other end of the spectrum is Brandon Davidson. I had Hall pretty close to him, though.)

I sinceriously doubt that there was much chance that the Oilers would be willing to pay both Hall and Lucic $6M per year for hockey-eternity. When Chiarelli targeted Lucic, Hall was the piece to move. Very soon, the lower dollars on contracts like Puljujarvi and Larsson will be necessary.

With Free Agency there’s never any guarantee those players wanted to come here, or were willing to come here for reasonable dollars/term. We just don’t know.

  108. delooper says:

    YKOil:
These guys just don’t get it.They just don’t.

It’s much more likely the other way around. Given that none of us really know what constraints the GM is working with. Armchair quarterbacking is an exercise in futility.

    MacTaviish’s obligatory goon.

  110. YKOil says:

    Lucinius,

That doesn’t fly. All three are RH players – which mean all three get a grade A chance to play in Edmonton. Also, all three signed for much less than $950k (which is the bury-them-in-the-‘minors’ cut-off) so really all Edmonton had to do was offer $950k to each and voila:

    – better pay and
    – better chance to play

    This isn’t rocket science.

  111. YKOil says:

    delooper,

By that logic every move Tambs/MacT made was unassailable.

  112. LadiesloveSmid says:

Stauff seems to say it’s to have an AHL vet D.

  113. Lucinius says:

    YKOil,

Except those aren’t the only considerations. Often geography is as important as cash and opportunity. How many times have we seen players leave money, term and opportunity on the table to go where they (or the family) want to live?

I’m not saying that is what happened, just that we don’t know. As fans we only get a fairly thin slice of information to judge things on. It is easy to build a team from the outside because we lack the fine details of context. As proven by decades of examples.. it is far harder to build teams in actuality.

  114. Professor Q says:

    Who is Tomas Tomas?

  115. delooper says:

    YKOil,

Uhm, not really. It’s just a waste of everyone’s time to criticize things we don’t understand. You can do it all day if you like. But it’s just an empty rant.

  116. "Steve Smith" says:

theres oil in virginia:I sinceriously doubt that there was much chance that the Oilers would be willing to pay both Hall and Lucic $6M per year for hockey-eternity.When Chiarelli targeted Lucic, Hall was the piece to move.

Yeah. Which makes me concerned that it was a foregone conclusion that Hall was what was being moved out, and it was then just a matter of seeing what they could get for him.

    “Steve Smith”,

That’s my thinking. Might not be done either.

  118. HeatTreaterJoe says:

Ok, so last night, I was geared up for 7years at $7M+ for Lucic… 7×6 is reasonable for UFA. If he’s really the possession beast that Ricki (and others) say he is, and if he’s really not fast enough to keep up with McDavid, could Lucic not anchor his own 1b line?

    Pouliot – McDavid – Yakupov
    Lucic – Drai – JP
    Maroon – RNH – Eberle

Does this work? All three lines look pretty good, and boy, I like the mass of that Lucic line.

And since Lucic is now an Oiler, can we start a campaign of referring to Lucic as “Orange Crush”? Maybe he gets an endorsement deal like John Cena did a few years ago (http://www.businessinsider.com/john-cena-replaces-fred-flintstone-on-fruity-pebbles-2013-1)?

  119. YKOil says:

    Lucinius,

I get what you are saying, I really do – it isn’t Chiarelli’s fault that Bergevin is an idiot (a Hall deal being better than a Weber deal).

Just not buying it right now. Hard for me to believe all three players, young in their careers, were willing to give up both opportunity and hundreds of thousands of dollars.

No. The better bet is that they were never even called.

No doubt my workouts and skating all summer is getting me ready for this upcoming season.. Lord knows I’m well rested! Lol #putmeincoach

There’s a video of his on ice workout too. Could be a bargain deal?

Would be a good bet at the right $$s.

I don’t know – I didn’t hear him say he was looking forward to playing with Drysaddle in his presser….:(
