Thomas Vanek was born in January of 1984.
Why did he only get drafted in 03?

Shouldn’t he have been eligible in 2002????

He had to serve his compulsory year of service in the Israeli army.

    Gustavsson to edm

this is Edmonton saying Brossoit is good enough to back up for sure

Yup. Expect Gustavsson to pull a groin in his second or third appearance. Should have grabbed Montoya for a few extra hundred K. >_>

    What??

    I’m assuming you mean Austria.

  5. Pretendergast says:

    LadiesloveSmid,

    Completely agree.

Looks like another Nilsson where he’s not TOO good that the future golden goalie doesn’t get at bats

  6. Kiltymcbagpipes says:

    v4ance,

You lost me at “if we kept Hall” cuz you know, WE DIDN’T!

  7. russ99 says:

Rumblings out there that the Oilers are out on Demers.

Waiting for the next trade to hit…

  8. Klima's_Bucket says:

    John Chambers,

    Seriously??

  9. square_wheels says:

    LMHF#1,

    He’s Slovenian.

    Chris,

Just like the Oilers, sometimes we should clean out the old.

Love the Lucic signing, its gonna suck later, put a smile on for now champ

Just like the Oilers the commentors on this blog used to be a lot better.

Thomas Vanek (born January 19, 1984) is an Austrian professional ice hockey left winger

  12. LadiesloveSmid says:

Montoya gets 150K more than Gustavsson. Hmm.

  13. T0ML says:

Cant complain too much, Arguably we got a high end LW for below going price (Have 1st liners not been going for 7m+ for quite some time?)

    Also new post alert.

Flames have not made a mistake since Trevling has been hired

I would say signing Hiller and Ramo was a big mistake. Sewered their whole season last year.

  15. flygoalie says:

    russ99,

Must be a deal in the works, if it doesn’t happen by presser they sign Demers.

  16. Kiltymcbagpipes says:

Matthias to Winnipeg means Colorado needs a centre.

I was cruising the New Jersey HF boards and wanted to post this comment:

Hes a defensive monster who will probably score a lot more points now that he’s playing behind McDavid rather than our worst in the NHL by a mile offense.

He’s a fantastic player and exactly what you need, he’s better than Hamonic by a good margin. You guys didn’t get hosed, both teams gave up an amazingly valuable asset.

Our defence is better, each of our lines now has some nastiness to them (remember Messier and Anderson, et al…they weren’t Lady Byng candidates). I am starting to look forward to Game 1 of the 2016/17 season. I think we are going to see a different attitude on the ice.

  19. Jon K says:

stephen sheps: As long as it’s not like the Stamkos deal in that there is not buyout protection, it’s not entirely the worst. How many players with no moves inevitably waive them for the right situation? Even when St. Louis and Staal would only waive theirs to go the Rangers, the canes and lightning still managed to do reasonably well on the return. Lucic has that sort of name recognition so if he needs to be moved even if he’s a declining asset there will likely be a market for him.

I still don’t love it but as mentioned earlier, compared to some of the other contracts given to older and worse players, this is the cost of doing business on the UFA market. NMC/NTCs come with the territory.

Edit: full NMC means buyout protections by default as you need to be placed on unconditional waivers before a buyout. NMC protects against waivers, therefore this contract could be an albatross in year 6 if he doesn’t get traded. The limited list clause kicks in yr. 6…

There’s the release valve, suggesting this contract for the Oilers is really 5 years, then off to a cap floor team. If it works, the most compelling reason to use term to overpay free agents.

Or of course, a buyout at that point.

    LMHF#1,

Ha, you’re correct, i had Kopitar in mind. Spent some time in Graz and went pretty hard on wine from that area, including Slovenian……must still be lingering hangover.

  21. Kepler62 says:

Had only; 10 fewer points than Hall, and is a whole lot meaner and tougher to play against – sign me up.

The Larsson deal is not as lopsided as media are making it out to be – Oilers got their man. And now they filled the hole they made – has New Jersey filled their’s? NO – because the Oilers have been trying to fill the top paring Dman hole for a decade and it’s next to impossible.

  22. rickithebear says:

    LT:

the games a player does not play are a huge factor.

    Lucic top 25ev forward
1 game a season replaced by a top 361-420 even forward

    Hall top 20 EVP forward
12gm a season replaced by a top 361-420 even forward

    lovejoy RHD 3yr @ 2.6667M
    1st comp
    top 40 HSCA D
    top 90 SA/60
    #23 GA/60 D

  24. rickithebear says:

McNuge93: I would say signing Hiller and Ramo was a big mistake. Sewered their whole season last year.

Hiller was a top 10 HSCA save% goalie.

Marc gioradano being a personal runway to HSCA shots and giving the real low Save% shots sewered a strong HSCA save% goalies career.

what is worse is Brodie who i consider one of the 10 best HSCA-SA/60 had the best GA/60 in the league for goals scored on his side of ice.

they get Gio for 7 more years.

  25. Smithereen says:

What happens if the Oil miss the playoffs this season? There is a lot of prognosticators pointing to a playoff berth with these changes. So far we have added one defenceman and replaced a left winger to a team that finished well out of the playoffs last year.

Lose a key guy to injury and we’re right back where we were last year, aren’t we?
