G2 2016-17: OILERS AT FLAMES

The Edmonton Oilers entertained the hometown fans with the best opener since Eberle’s magic fall 2010, but that was yesterday, and yesterday’s gone. Tonight, the rubber hits the road, and a win is the most important thing. Right?

THE END OF THE WORLD, YEAR OVER YEAR

  • Oilers in October 2015: 4-8-0
  • Oilers in October 2016: 1-0-0

The Edmonton Oilers entered this season with (I believe) five defensemen who could reasonably be counted on to play NHL hockey at par—depending on usage. Oscar Klefbom, Adam Larsson, Andrej Sekera, Mark Fayne and Brandon Davidson—in my opinion—formed a reasonable group of five, and Darnell Nurse among others would provide depth. Edmonton added Kris Russell and Eric Gryba—hey, the more the merrier and I know the numbers on both men—and that looks better than one year ago. Right?

The Brandon Davidson injury is a bitter pill, because that third pairing is a real concern. I do think the top 4D has a chance to be much better than a year ago, but the road trip is going to expose that third pair. Nurse—Gryba? Or do the Oilers mess with Klefbom—Larsson, Sekera—Russell? That will be the heart of the conversation today.

DEFENSE, GAME 1

defense-last-night

  • Sekera—Russell and Klefbom—Larsson did well in the high danger category, and as we discussed yesterday morning those two pairs kept the puck moving in a (mostly) positive direction.
  • This group also posted six assists, about one month’s worth (I kid, but barely) of assists for the entire group one year ago.
  • The options to draw in for Davidson are Mark Fayne, Matt Benning and Eric Gryba. I think Gryba is the logical choice, but would like to see Mark Fayne in there. The problem? Nurse and Fayne are not a good combination, at least the evidence suggests as much (44 percent Corsi for 5×5 percentage, in less than 100 minutes), but I am uncertain about the other options. Woodguy suggested Eric Gryba, that may be the answer Todd McLellan settles on today.
  • Darnell Nurse (or other) will no doubt want to have a conversation with Matt Tkachuk tonight, he of the outside the lines behavior (hit Russell from behind, what looked like a slew foot on Brandon Davidson and then a bizarre period where he apparently held the player down, and a hit late in the game on Adam Larsson). I know most of you will not agree, but for me the two points are the gold tonight, and once the game is put to bed other scores can be settled. As an additional point on this matter, probably a good idea to dress 7D if the goal is to announce your presence with authority—and dress all of your penalty killers.
  • The Oilers are way short of good enough to be chasing retribution on the road while also pursuing two points. I will be disappointed if we see a five-minute power play for the Flames tonight while the game is in the balance. These two points matter, folks, you win tonight and then against Buffalo and it is 3-0-0 and the month is set up beautifully. Keep your eyes on the prize!
  • The top two pairings are going to have to play 25 minutes each—and if the Oilers are in this game during the third period, I bet we see the bench shortened with extreme prejudice.

FORWARDS, GAME 1

forwards-last-night

  • The McDavid line was fanbloodytastic. I know there are concerns with Milan Lucic, but we are one game into the season—and that trio posted 11 shots in Game 1. I have projected the McDavid line to score 82 goals this season, and the trio potted three in the first 60 minutes. So far, so good.
  • Nuge line did not do well in Corsi for 5×5, but the high danger chances show a low event 2line. That is what you want from your checking line, so Nuge and Pouliot need to cash. I projected the Nuge line to score 52 (Pouliot—Nuge—??) but nothing rhymed in the first game. The line (Poo-Nuge-Slepy) had five shots on goal.
  • The secondary scoring (Maroon, Pitlick, Kassian, Puljujarvi) was fabulous, but we should not expect four wingers from the bottom 6F to score one goal each every night—or any night ever again!
  • The Draisaitl line had some good moments, and the Letestu line were very high event (and played quite a bit).
  • At even strength, Connor McDavid lapped the field. We should expect more of that tonight.
  • McDavid played almost seven more minutes at evens than the Nuge. Seven!

BATTLE OF ALBERTA!

Uh, yeah, no. Not yet, anyway. One indication (for me) that Oilers fans have forgotten about what it feels like to be in the playoff chase is the pure vitriol towards Matt Tkachuk. Look folks, the Oilers have come upon agitators and tomfoolery beyond what this young rookie did in the first game, but reading the comments section it seems to me people are willing to give up two points in order to chase an 18-year old around the barn. Good gracious, did we forget how the NHL keeps score? Win the game, then set the record. I am genuinely flummoxed by people’s reaction, including a 900-word email to me yesterday detailing why Milan Lucic has already failed the team. My goodness folks, even hyperbole is stepping back from the verbal on this one. This isn’t the Federal League and winning the blasted game is the job.

THE POWER PLAY

  • Todd McLellan: “The power play was sloppy, we didn’t sense danger and when we gave up the puck it was somebody else’s problem. It should be five players’ problem, not one or two guys at the back. There are a lot of areas we have to improve on, but when you’re not playing best it’s nice to win a game.” Source

I do not think the Oilers have a grand chance of winning tonight (Elliott can’t possibly be as bad as he was in Edmonton), but the one area that could grab victory is the power play. Edmonton had three power-play shots in game one, with Puljujarvi scoring, that is in 11:11 with the man advantage. Room for improvement? Yes, I believe there is.

LOWDOWN WITH LOWETIDE

At 10 this morning, we kick off the weekend right! TSN1260, scheduled to appear:

  • Steve Lansky, BigMouthSports. Blue Jays, McDavid opens Rogers Place with a memorable game, Auston Matthews with a first game for the ages.
  • Guy Flaming, Pipeline Show. Oil Kings off to an interesting start, and Tyler Benson is finding the range after returning to the Vancouver Giants.
  • Matt Iwanyk, TSN1260. Today’s Point/CounterPoint involves the NLCS and ALCS, plus the Oilers and how to handle the Matt Tkachuk issue.
  • Frank Seravalli, TSN. Frank was at the opener of Rogers Place, we will get his review, and we will chat about Auston Matthews and his fantastic debut.
  • Paul Almeida, SSE. Jays, Oilers and what to expect tonight in Calgary.

What should I wish for Christmas?
A good penalty kill or a good powerplay. Right now they both scare me.

Penalty Kill has done well tonight. Definately power play.

McLellan needs to watch some 80s Oiler games. Movement of puck AND players, if we stay still we don’t get chances,

  3. square_wheels says:

    russ99,

Buddies at the game said its hot as hell in there.

    No puns required.

  4. khildahl says:

Eberle was set up with a wide open net twice on that powerplay, but the puck got deflected into his feet both times.

  5. Centre of attention says:

    Professor Q:
Why did they think that was a good idea? Lucic should have stayed on his side, not rush the centreman and slip on the puck…

Have you seen how many perfect cross crease passes Lucic has whiffed on? He could have 2 or 3 tap in goals so far this year.

I know hes not a shooter or a big time goal scorer, but if he can’t tap in a McDavid cross-crease pass when he’s standing right there, why is he even on that line? Eberle was strong enough on his stick to tap one in.

  6. Oilspill says:

    Don’t mind Nurse Gryba.

  7. jzed says:

Edmonton starting to stress the phlegms in their own zone, keep it up boys! McDavid whispering in PooPoo’s ear?

  8. BONE207 says:

Wow…Quick may be gone for 4 months with a groin surgery.

  9. Pouzar says:

    Oil2Oilers: I like Maroon-Drai-Puljujarvi

They have not been good imo. Getting killed on the Corgis.

Explains the fly. Usually the frost kills them off by now.

Although this is true, it has also only been 5 periods of hockey. Lucic could take 10 games getting his McD timing down pat and still score 30 at the rate to which McD delivers those.

  15. Little Poteet says:

Watching these Nashville highlights, 3 pp goals from bombs from the point. What a luxury that would be

Ha, I envision Mact and Klowe trying to get everybody watching 80s oiler videos all the time.

  17. REDRIGGER says:

They are a necessary evil at this time. Similar to a prostate exam.

anonymous: Ha, I envision Mact and Klowe trying to get everybody watching 80s oiler videos all the time.

    Lol, probably right,

But 80s Oilers powerplay was so good they changed the rules.

  24. Pouzar says:

    Oh…and that’s 2 Chachi….or do you want 1.5?

  25. Rocknrolla says:

    anonymous,

anonymous: Ha, I envision Mact and Klowe trying to get everybody watching 80s oiler videos all the time.

“Hey guys, come to the new video room, Kevin and I have some power plays from the 80s qued up! It’s so easy just give it to Gretz and get open….actually Gretz is here! someone go get Gretz! GUys? Where you all going? Ok…”

  26. Melvis says:

Nuge burying one would be good. Dave Keon put points on the board. I was there. Shaw is trying to sell me that ’64 aerial on the roof of the house from that 2 channel universe.

  27. Centre of attention says:

    Lowetide:
    24-36 after two periods.

A much more consistent effort from the Oilers in the second period.

4 break aways for the Oilers too, they are getting behind Calgary’s D and its causing them to back up and give up the blue line easier.

    Also, McDavid.

  28. Soup Fascist says:

No wonder Matthew is so angry. His dad ate his younger brother.

I do not think that “also” means what you think it means.

  30. Centre of attention says:

“Steve Smith”: I do not think that “also” means what you think it means.

Yeah you’re right he should have been the main point of my comment. Not the “also” part 😛

I’m about done with MSM’s opinion of Tkatchuk….

  32. Lowetide says:

A playoff team would score on this power play…

Pouliot draws a penalty in the offensive zone? Dogs and cats living together?

  34. BONE207 says:

Pouliot looking like he’s trying to make up for his previous gaffes.

  35. Professor Q says:

I’m going to be very uncharacteristically mean here and say that Tkatchuk has the same douchey face, and mouth guard chewing habit, as Kane.

  36. "Steve Smith" says:

Nuge burying one would be good. Dave Keon put points on the board. I was there. Shaw is trying to sell me that ’64 aerial on the roof of the house from that 2 channel universe.

Come on Keon. Bury one for us.

    Leon works too.

  38. russ99 says:

    Power play, go get Gretz!

  39. jp says:

    Oh my. That was pretty!

  40. Soup Fascist says:

    Looch sucks.

    Sick pass by looch there

  42. "Steve Smith" says:

    Thanks, Rick.

  43. OmJo says:

Will the Oilers ever consistently play a full 60-minute game?

I wonder if it’s just us that can’t seem to do it.

  44. khildahl says:

A playoff team would score on this power play…

Is this the new Stan Weir?

  45. russ99 says:

“Steve Smith”: He was the main point of your comment.

Unless it’s the German also, which fits. 🙂

    Goal!!

  46. Pouzar says:

    What a feed by Lucic.

  47. jzed says:

    Hmm, power play?……

  48. BONE207 says:

    Drai makes it look easy.

  51. Professor Q says:

    Beautiful. Just beautiful.

    Bury the phlegm

  54. Ryan says:

Who was the genius who thought of putting Draisatl with McDavid on the PP? 🙂

  55. "Steve Smith" says:

The bad news is that the book is out on the Oilers: if you can shut down McDavid, you shut down the team.

The good news is that good fucking luck shutting down McDavid.

  56. dangilitis says:

The only problem with this team is that they haven’t figured out how to condition McDavid to play 60 mins a game. They’ll figure it out

  57. Professor Q says:

“For the first time tonight, the Oilers have a 3-2 lead.”

Well, yes…that’s sort of how it works when you score that precise score.

  58. fuzzy muppet says:

    Special team looking, well, special.

  59. russ99 says:

Come on Oil, let’s get at em.

  60. khildahl says:

Something seems just a bit off with Nuge. Brain’s all there, but his reaction time seems half a step slow.

  61. OmJo says:

McDavid has 5pts (so far) in two games. On pace for 205 points.

  62. Halfwise says:

Centre of attention: Yeah you’re right he should of been the main point of my comment. Not the “also” part

Should have, my man, should have.

The bad news is that the book is out on the Oilers: if you can shut down McDavid, you shut down the team.

The good news is that good fucking luck shutting down McDavid.

Come on, he’s only been in on 60% of the goals

  64. "Steve Smith" says:

    OmJo:
McDavid has 5pts (so far) in two games. On pace for 205 points.

Might want to run that count again.

  65. OmJo says:

    Professor Q:
“For the first time tonight, the Oilers have a 3-2 lead.”

Well, yes…that’s sort of how it works when you score that precise score.

To be fair to whoever decided to say that stupid line, sometimes goals get waived off. So he’s just… Well…

    Okay I can’t defend it.

  66. khildahl says:

    He’d better just need stitches.

  67. Bismarck says:

    OmJo,

    6 isn’t it

  71. "Steve Smith" says:

    Halfwise,

As long as we’re being pedantic: only one T in “Tkachuk”, people. It’s not like it’s a new name to hockey fans.

(There’s also a C in “Schultz”, but I sort of lost my fire for that one with Chiarelli’s best trade.)

  72. russ99 says:

    Centre of attention:
McDavid to dressing room. Oh lord

  116. Professor Q says:

    That makes up for it.

Looks like McDavid got some stitches to his chin? Was that a penalty or did he just have to get it stitched anyway?

  117. REDRIGGER says:

    Fuck that

  118. Little Poteet says:

Huge gash on McDavid s chin. Yikes

  122. russ99 says:

    Damn refs!! Wtf?!?

  123. pocession charge says:

    Brad Watson is an idiot.

  124. Centre of attention says:

McDavid for diving?! LOL!!!! Bullsh*t call. He didn’t even fall down he tried to stay up and stay skating.

Refs are looking to even it up…

  125. Oil2Oilers says:

Ref called McDavid because he was tired of trying to keep up

  126. REDRIGGER says:

Miss the nasty hi stick then that bs call. Come off it.

  127. khildahl says:

    Professor Q:
    That makes up for it.

Looks like McDavid got some stitches to his chin? Was that a penalty or did he just have to get it stitched anyway?

Brodie high-sticked him and he left for stitches.

  128. LMHF#1 says:

So not only does the 4 minute not get called, but that joker is trying to say McDavid would give up a breakaway?

This league is such a joke most of the time.

Great to see an Oilers team that makes the other team take penalties again though. They outwork you in the corners and along the wall very well.

  129. dangilitis says:

Someone should lay giordano out as he steps out

  130. Professor Q says:

How the *f* was that a diving call? He jumped right back up!

    Sigh.

  131. Lowetide says:

Have to not take penalties, crossing Jordan.

  132. jm363561 says:

    6.39 Missed shot Bennet
    6.42 Shortanded goal Letestu, unassisted

You guys are terrible play by play reporters.

I am only typing this to kill time until the next update.

  133. LMHF#1 says:

    Clowns.

  134. Réal Goudenyéu says:

    Garbage. Again.

This is getting obscene. They’re letting the crowd call the game now.

  136. fuzzy muppet says:

    This officiating is real bad

  137. flyfish1168 says:

Diving, That has to be the worst call of this series.

  138. Halfwise says:

    Centre of attention,

    It’s actually a kindness not a criticism.

  139. russ99 says:

Fuck these refs. Blatant home opener calls.

  140. jzed says:

Giordano uses his handjob voucher early in the year, like McDavid would give up a 2 on 1 to get a power play. After this season, refs will not dare insult him like that again.

  141. square_wheels says:

    russ99,

    Turn it off. It’s liberating.

  142. delooper says:

    “Steve Smith”:
“For the first time tonight, the Oilers have a 3-2 lead.”

    Thanks, Rick.

Hopefully the Oilers don’t get the 3-2 lead for a second time.

  143. "Steve Smith" says:

I don’t have a problem with the call on Eberle, honestly. I have a huge problem with the call on McDavid.

Shouldn’t Wideman have gotten three or four penalties by now, though? Or was that just a single game thing?

  144. BONVIE says:

Well it’s pretty clear there is no Wideman factor in this game. It’s like McCreary vs the Oilers of old out there.

  145. REDRIGGER says:

Mcdavid steps out the box just in time to take the clearing pass and blows by Gio. Please pretty please

  146. Centre of attention says:

That was a trip but refs are blowing everything right now. Watch your stick placement guys…

  147. BONE207 says:

    Good news…
Only 80 more games of this shit refereeing.

  148. OmJo says:

    “Steve Smith”,

    “Steve Smith”,

    6pts, on pace for 246pts. #GretzkyWho

  149. dangilitis says:

Letestu didn’t have his head up but he could have sprung a breakaway pass there

  150. Halfwise says:

Let’s have a McDeity shortie now.

  151. "Steve Smith" says:

I remember in 2005, when we were told that Shawn Horcoff was going to be our first line centre, and my head exploded. And then I saw him actually play, and I was okay with it. I kind of feel like that watching Letestu this year.

(Not that he’s fit to be our first-line centre. But is it just me, or is he markedly better at all aspects of the game than he was last year?)

  152. Ryan says:

    khildahl:
This is getting obscene. They’re letting the crowd call the game now.

I’m not a referee, but I thought if you swiped for the puck, made contact with the puck, then tripped a player in the same play, it’s fair game.

  153. LMHF#1 says:

Lead with the pointy end of the blocker next time Cam. Get that puke!

  154. "Steve Smith" says:

The penalty kill’s looked very good tonight, even in the first period.

  155. delooper says:

So it it time to injure chuck baby?

    sigh.

One goal lead with 7:44 remaining. No.

  156. square_wheels says:

That puck needed to exit the zone. Bad shift.

  157. Centre of attention says:

McDavid needed stitches for a high stick that was missed by the refs, but he gets called for diving.

  158. BONE207 says:

Maroon had it along with Leon. Damn

  159. Spengler says:

    “Steve Smith”,

I was just about to say the same thing. The structure is there, as is the effort.

  160. "Steve Smith" says:

    That guy’s such a Jyrki.

  161. Réal Goudenyéu says:

The games not over just because you’re leading on the scoreboard. Jokipakka should never have got the opportunity to shoot that.

  162. Halfwise says:

    delooper:
So it it time to injure chuck baby?

    Apparently not.

  163. fuzzy muppet says:

    Maroon started that whole sequence

  164. REDRIGGER says:

    Talbot shaky couple sequences.

  165. russ99 says:

    Réal Goudenyéu:
The games not over just because you’re leading on the scoreboard. Jokipakka should never have got the opportunity to shoot that.

    Pitlick was late on coverage.

  166. pocession charge says:

Nice play by Pou. Puck bounced on him.

  167. Rondo says:

    Talbot looks shaky

  168. square_wheels says:

    BONE207,

    But Nurse/Gryba take the minus.

Ricky – where are you to pin that on a forward ?

  169. "Steve Smith" says:

    Nice stick-lift by Hall.

  170. LMHF#1 says:

    REDRIGGER:
    Talbot shaky couple sequences.

He hasn’t looked settled yet this year. Not in the preseason or these first 2.

  171. russ99 says:

Great play Russell!! Been wanting Oilers defensemen to do that for a decade.

  172. BONE207 says:

    Battle of Alberta Y2K version?

  173. delooper says:

    “Steve Smith”,

    He’s really improved defensively.

  174. "Steve Smith" says:

    delooper,

I’m not sure he should be blocking so many shots, though – we can’t afford to have our first overalls injured.

  175. square_wheels says:

Kassian just keeps impressing. Good lanes all night, back checking as well.

  176. nelson88 says:

Benson with the hatty to win it in OT.

    I don’t get the sportsnet feed 🙁

  177. fuzzy muppet says:

They look like they kinda know what they’re doing right now.

  178. BONE207 says:

    “Steve Smith”:
    delooper,

I’m not sure he should be blocking so many shots, though – we can’t afford to have our first overalls injured.

Well he did say he’s going to be really motivated this year.

  179. Ryan says:

    square_wheels:
Kassian just keeps impressing. Good lanes all night, back checking as well.

    I said the same earlier.

  180. REDRIGGER says:

LMHF#1: He hasn’t looked settled yet this year. Not in the preseason or these first 2.

Agreed glad we got the firepower to give him at least a couple games to settle in.

  181. LMHF#1 says:

    nelson88:
Benson with the hatty to win it in OT.

I don’t get the sportsnet feed

Debrincat has 11 points in 4 games.

And no, I won’t stop until Benson is a productive NHLer.

  182. "Steve Smith" says:

    LMHF#1,

I’ve got a bet with my Obnoxious Hawks Fan Co-worker (hereinafter OHFC) about whether Debrincat makes the Hall of Fame. I like my chances.

  183. REDRIGGER says:

Ice is tilting in the wrong direction.

  184. Professor Q says:

LMHF#1: Debrincat has 11 points in 4 games.

And no, I won’t stop until Benson is a productive NHLer.

    Neither is DeBrincat.

  185. square_wheels says:

    Ryan,

Found money. Need to keep making these kind of bets.

Now, if Benning can emerge as a late blooming Mathieu Schneider or Rafalski.

  186. "Steve Smith" says:

    REDRIGGER:
Ice is tilting in the wrong direction.

    Score effects.

  187. REDRIGGER says:

    “Steve Smith”: Score effects.

Yep. I hate that mindset. But it is prevalent league wide.

  188. "Steve Smith" says:

    McDavid, you bum!

  189. LMHF#1 says:

    “Steve Smith”:
    LMHF#1,

    Odds?

Versteeg looks like a 30yo coming off a 10 day groin injury in October…

Thats a tweet from a flames fan.

I don’t get why I was so heated when he jumped ship to Calgary.

  191. square_wheels says:

Now that is the Lucic we paid for !

  192. fuzzy muppet says:

    Great shift by Lucic

  193. REDRIGGER says:

He was being a good team are missed on purpose. Giving others option for empty netter

  194. Professor Q says:

    Empty Net…

  195. JDï™ says:

    Let’s go for SIX!

  196. "Steve Smith" says:

    LMHF#1,

Even money, I think – I’ll have to check when I’m next at the office. He makes some stupid bets.

Mind you, I felt pretty good when he gave me even money odds on Panarin winning the Calder at the beginning of last year, too. Oops.

  197. Halfwise says:

    Drai, thru a 6 foot 5-hole.

  198. REDRIGGER says:

He was being a good teamate missed on purpose. Giving others option for empty netter

  199. Oil2Oilers says:

Lucic Draisaitl seem to be finding a vibe.
