G63 2016-17: OILERS AT PREDATORS

The Oilers road trip is almost complete, and a Bettman today covers our bet for the month of February—while putting the team in a terrific position entering the final stretch.

I love Nashville, was raised on its music and immersed myself in its lore. The best part of Nashville is the story behind the songs. Take Sweet Dream Baby. A woman named Cindy Walker answered the phone one day in 1961, and received a very specific request. Roy Orbison was recording an album and all of the songs had a similar feel and build. They were ballads, with giant orchestra swells and backups singers. They needed an uptempo song with sparse instrumentation and unusual chord progressions. Oh, and they needed it right away. The result was one of my favorite songs ever, a brilliant piece of pop music that has been recorded dozens of times over the decades. Nashville might be shy on accountants and engineers and architects, but their songwriter/60 is off the damned charts. God bless the girls and boys who make the noise on 16th Avenue.

CRAZY FOR LOVING YOU, YEAR OVER YEAR

  • Oilers in October 2015: 4-8-0, goal differential -7
  • Oilers in October 2016: 7-2-0, goal differential +10
  • Oilers in November 2015: 4-7-2, goal differential -6
  • Oilers in November 2016: 5-8-2 goal differential -3
  • Oilers in December 2015: 7-6-1, goal differential -9
  • Oilers in December 2016: 7-2-5, goal differential +3
  • Oilers in January 2016: 4-5-2, goal differential -5
  • Oilers in January 2017: 9-4-1, goal differential +8
  • Oilers in February 2016: 3-8-2, goal differential -18
  • Oilers in February 2017: 5-5-0, goal differential -2
  • Oilers after 62, 2015-16: 22-34-6, goal differential -40
  • Oilers after 62, 2016-17: 33-21-8, goal differential +16
G63 a year ago saw Edmonton get a Bettman point after a long streak of nothing, as they lost 2-1 to the Anaheim Ducks. No matter how you slice it, there is only one month (November) with enough wobble for worry. February, based on toughness of schedule, is very close to being a success.

WHAT TO EXPECT FROM FEBRUARY

  • On the road to: Nashville, Carolina, Montreal (Expected: 1-1-1) (Actual 1-2-0)
  • At home to: Chicago, Arizona, Philadelphia (Expected: 1-1-1) (Actual 2-1-0)
  • On the road to: Chicago, Tampa Bay, Florida, Washington, Nashville, St. Louis (Expected: 2-3-1) (Actual: 2-2-0)
  • Overall expected result: 4-5-3, 11 points in 12 games
  • Overall current results: 5-5-0, 10 points in 10 games

Nashville played yesterday, so that may benefit the Oilers. Edmonton is 26-32-9 all-time versus Nashville, who spent very little time being a free bingo square on the NHL calendar. Edmonton has just one point from two games against the Predators this season, with Ryan Ellis, Pekka Rinne and Viktor Arvidsson leading the way.

WHO DOES PETER CHIARELLI TRADE WITH?

Since arriving in Edmonton, Peter Chiarelli has shown no real preference in who he trades with. Here is the list:

  • Arizona 2 (trade for Lauri Korpikoski & Henrik Samuelsson)
  • St. Louis 2 (traded Anders Nilsson and Nail Yakupov for picks in two different deals)
  • NY Islanders 1 (trade for Griffin Reinhart)
  • NY Rangers 1 (trade for Cam Talbot)
  • New Jersey 1 (traded Hall for Larsson)
  • Toronto 1 (traded Martin Marincin for a pick)
  • Ottawa 1 (trade for Eric Gryba)
  • Chicago 1 (trade for Anders Nilsson)
  • Montreal 1 (trade for Zack Kassian)
  • Vancouver 1 (traded Phil Larsen for a pick)
  • Pittsburgh 1 (traded Justin Schultz for a pick)
  • Florida 1 (traded Edward Purcell for a pick)
  • Anaheim 1 (traded for Patrick Maroon)

I would rank his best trade as the Talbot acquisition, with honorable mention to Patrick Maroon. Zack Kassian was a good deal, too. Among the current possibilities, I think the Islanders may be a team PC does business with between now and Wednesday afternoon.

FIVE BEST TRADE OPTIONS

Using the TSN Top 40 trade assets, and then running an adlib of my own, here are five interesting trade options for the deadline.

  • LD Brandon Davidson and 2018 second-round pick for RD Kevin Shattenkirk. Larry Brooks has Edmonton involved and we know Peter Chiarelli is the most aggressive Oilers general manager since Slats. I have no doubt any trade for Shattenkirk would involve the second becoming a first if Edmonton signs the defender.
  • 2018 second-round pick for LC Brian Boyle. I think this trade might be the most likely, depending on what the Lightning plan to do. Maybe the Lightning can get a first-round pick out of Minnesota, but I think Edmonton has a shot if Boyle shakes loose.
  • Jordan Eberle and Brandon Davidson to the NY Islanders for C-R Ryan Strome and G Jaroslav Halak. The money doesn’t quite work (and EDM would need a sweetener) but the idea does on a couple of levels. Halak’s contract ($3.5 million) expires summer 2018, just as Connor McDavid’s big contract kicks in. Eberle’s deal expires the following year, in 2019. Is Strome a suitable replacement for Eberle? Or could he successfully center a skill line, allowing Leon to play RW?
  • 2017 third-round pick to the Buffalo Sabres for G Anders Nilsson. This would be a solid move in my opinion, Nilsson knows the team and has had success.
  • Brandon Davidson to New Jersey Devils for LHD Yohann Auvitu and a pick. Auvitu has posted a solid first NA season and there is some evidence the Devils have low value compared to actual value (Jan Hejda). He is ineligible for the expansion draft and could help right away.

BEST LINE COMBINATIONS

The current McDavid line is slowing down a little, that usually indicates change. Using Corsica.hockey and xGF%, here are the top line combinations so far this season:

  1. Maroon—McDavid—Eberle 57.90 (138 minutes)
  2. Maroon—McDavid—Draisaitl 57.03 (296 minutes)
  3. Maroon—Nuge—Eberle 54.80 (122 minutes)
  4. Lucic—McDavid—Eberle 51.32 (218 minutes)
  5. Hendricks—Letestu—Kassian 49.03 (128 minutes)
  6. Pouliot—Nuge—Eberle 48.38 (142 minutes)
  7. Pouliot—Nuge—Kassian 46.94 (104 minutes)
  8. Lucic—Nuge—Eberle 34.50 (113 minutes)

Darcy McLeod of Because Oilers joined me on the Lowdown this week, and suggested the top line, with a second group including Leon and Nuge. Perhaps we see it in the new shuffle.

That would be ideal. With Calgary pushing now, the Oilers need to grab as many points as possible. All hands on deck! I wonder if McLellan runs 7D today just in case someone cannot make it through the entire game.

JESSE READY?

Jesse Puljujarvi scored a goal and had an assist last night, now running at 19, 7-9-16. He is 5-4-9 in his last 8 games. I think he probably gets a call after the trade deadline, and that might impact PCs decisions re: Center v. Wing acquisition.

Bear is having a helluva run. Important for the Condors to make the playoffs, so Bear and Caleb Jones can (possibly) get some playing time in at the pro level after their junior careers end this spring.

We are starting to see that the rental market is pretty damn expensive.

Jurco (who is like Detroit’s Lander, but with even less offense at the NHL level with 0 points) gets a 3rd

    Hanzal gets a 1st, 2nd, conditional 4th

    Eaves gets a conditional 2nd/possible 1st.

This is why I set my sights lower…like Franson etc.

Franson is “pointless”. I would play Osterle over Franson.

Faulk isn’t a fit for Colorado since they have Barrie. Colorado would have to get rid of Barrie for Faulk to be a fit there. Which is why Hanifin typically gets mentioned in any potential Duchene deal with Carolina.

I wouldn’t go more than Nugent-Hopkins for Faulk. That would be a summer deal though, where the Oilers would have time to get another centre.

Three way trades never happen. Duchene to Carolina. Nugent-Hopkins and a Carolina LD to Colorado. Faulk to Edmonton.

Nugent-Hopkins is a better fit for Carolina since he is signed for 5 years vs. 2 for Duchene, who will be an $8 million dollar player in two years.

JDï™: Agreed, but if the goal had have been recognized at the time it went in the net, the trip wouldn’t have happened. Much different than crosschecking a guy after the whistle.

But it wasn’t and it did, so no different than after play penalty. Being in “disputed” time is not a free ticket for bad acting. Still cannot engage in behaviour that elicits a penalty.

Say a scramble in the crease occurs, puck goes in and it’s missed by the refs but then goes in on a rebound seconds later, but because the first one was missed, a player loses his cool and two hands the nearest defenseman. Still a penalty and rightly so.

If there had been a fight in our game instead, would you have let both players out of the box?

Delay of game is the only one I see being a bit dicey.

  24. NYCOIL "Gentleman Backpacker" says:

    godot10,

Oesterle is a better skater, but he is left-handed, less experienced and currently less effective at the NHL level than is Franson.

Franson is merely insurance on the right side, which has no depth: you have Larsson, Benning and then Gryba. Larsson has been hampered of late by a bad back. That’s something to keep in mind.

If Franson comes cheap as a rental to be in the mix with Gryba for the playoffs as your 6/7/8 D-man, who is right-handed, it makes some sense. You let him go this summer.

Sure, but Sleppy also sports the worst FF percentage of Fs on the team, so sitting him for a couple of games isn’t as ridiculous as people make out. By that measure he’s the one not-the-NHLer. I thought he was coming on so would like to see him in too, but Pak also needs to get some playing time.

Still doesn’t make sense for LA to get Bishop, unless either Quick got reinjured in his first game back or they plan on moving Quick to get out from under his contract. From TB’s perspective it does make some sense – they moved out Bishop and did not take significant salary back – they’ll now have some more room to sign their RFAs.

Minnesota has a very good team – its worth it for them to go for broke this year.

Against St. Louis I’d like to see Lander and Slepy back in, Hendricks and Parkarinen out. Also Benning should sit for a game – too much scramble in his game right now.

  33. NYCOIL "Gentleman Backpacker" says:

  36. NYCOIL "Gentleman Backpacker" says:

    Diablo,

It does make sense for LA if they successfully kept him away from Calgary for the price of money and a marginal prospect. Surprised Tampa pulled the trigger for so little.

Plus, it’s insurance in case Quick does get hurt again. Groin injuries (like back injuries) can be problematic, especially for a goalie. LA must think if they can get in the playoffs they still have a team with a decent chance.

Bishop had no effect on TBL RFAs as he was off the books July 1. Holding salary means LA can afford him as a backup for this one run. And if the playoffs show Quick is not the same, they have a plan B in place. Plus they block Bishop from going to Falmeland.

I’ve seen it mentioned further up the comments but I think it’s worth repeating…

The single sole reason Bishop to the Kings makes sense is that the alternative was he was going to the Flames.

LA and Cgy play four games head to head before the end of the year I think. And they are fighting for the same playoff spot.

This is a brilliant move even before the low cost of getting Bishop. Protection against a Quick injury and blocking your #1 competition from getting a goalie who might knock you out of contention… Brilliant.

  45. NYCOIL "Gentleman Backpacker" says:

    Ray,

Yup. First thought was why LA? Then when I saw the price I thought, Lombardi you sly MOFO, you.

Solely on handedness and age, their value is not the same. You have no idea what Cernak will be in five years either. Like all prospects he is a bet. Make as many RHD ones as you can. As NYCOil was implying earlier, and as I was doing in my post, RHD have heightened equity value. Capitalize on that notion where you can.

Evilas: Anyone think we can get a salary-retained Halak for Musil?

This is a poor typification of the trade. There’s another player and 3 other picks involved-one of which we have virtually no info on. Not to mention the disparity between Halak and Bishop, the extra year on the Halak contract, and the differences between Cernak and Musil above.

    – I wonder though how many of these guesses were a bonafide prediction vs hope?

    – If you knew that RNH + Ebs + Lucic + Pou combined would be at 13, 13, 13 and 5 goals at this point, and that Nurse and Davidson would miss 60 games, a college D would be playing big minutes: it truely is a remarkable season. Our coach has done an amazing job.

    Ray,

Yup. First thought was why LA? Then when I saw the price I thought, Lombardi you sly MOFO, you.
I was fully expecting Yzerman to get a lot more for Bishop so my mind just naturally thought at first that someone would overpay and did not expect that to be LA. And then…I mean, brilliant stuff.

Of course – makes perfect sense now – thanks for clarifying.
I doubt Pens trade Fleury at this juncture, so Falmes are unlikely to find an upgrade in net before playoffs start. When Bishop is sitting on the bench, and Elliott/Johnson are letting in soft games during the next 4 meetings between LA and Calgary, we are all going to have some good laughs.

    Another little piece here
    http://thehockeywriters.com/european-defenseman-reaches-the-hockey-bar/

I’m guessing he wanted to play against men, like he was in Europe and the Kings wanted him at a lower level due to space and to see if some offense develops.

Our PP2 is not working the combinations of Hopkins, Eberle, Maroon, Caggulia and Sekera have 10 PPG. This is an area TMAC can squeeze more performance from.

    Bumper -Lucic
    Right half wall – Slepyshev
    Left half wall – Letestu
    Trigger – Hopkins
    Top – Sekera

McDavid drives the PP1, moving Eberle and Maroon is not going to hurt that unit. And since McDavid draws most of the penalties he can have a break before his unit plays.

Just to follow up, but in looking for confirmation of this, GoErie has it as the Kings assigned him to the Reign and then changed their mind. I can find no confirmation of refusal.

It has one really solid narrative device… The setting within, the amusement park as another container within the movie container. That has some power.

I think ET ruined Spielberg. Would like to see him do a greasy, dirty movie for a change. Reboot the system. There’s a filmmaker in there somewhere… not a Hollywood producer.

I can’t even begin to tell you how much this offends me. Jurassic World – ok we can have a discussion about Mr. Pratt and the Raport dance, but sir I kindly request that you withdraw your criticism of what is most definitely Steven Spielberg’s finest film aside from Schindler’s List!

We got spanked. That Nashville team was exponentially sharper than we were.

March will bail us out of this funk. And my Hunter 1909 Sweepstakes bid of 91 will fade again, hopefully.

There was a rumour that TBY is sniffing around Ellis, with Kucherov being the main piece going back.

I can’t see why Poile would ever trade Ellis (very good player, amazing contract with 2 years left to run), but if he can be had Peter should be in there pitching.

    Jethro Tull: Saving Private Ryan?

Probably his biggest failure. Give me a whole movie, Steve, not 20 minutes of brilliance and two plus hours of white bread, clichéd, clunky narrative that looked like it was filmed with a completely different crew. And it has a standup comedian providing its gravitas! Which might be genius because you almost have to take the narrative after the opening scene as satire to infuse this rubbish with any sort of intelligence or insight. I doubt that was Steve’s intent.

He has a cinematic eye no doubt. Question is why? Why did he make that first 20 minutes? So he could serve us Pablum? What is the point of having cinematic talent if it is going to be employed exploring safe, sentimental, noble themes with clean and pretty pictures?
