G76 2016-17: KINGS AT OILERS

The Edmonton Oilers played the first NHL playoff game in team history at the Spectrum in Philadelpia. It was April 8, 1980, and a Tuesday. Gretzky scored in the first, Donny Murdoch tied it at 3 in the third and Bobby Clarke (Reg Leach, Bill Barber) won it in OT. Ron Low (original Lowtide) stopped 47 of 51 in the loss. As we get ourselves together and prepare for the postseason, important to remember the journey can take several winters and a matching number of summers. Getting to the dance has been an enormous challenge, only fair to pause and pass along some credit when the levee breaks.

ALBERTA BOUND, YEAR OVER YEAR

  • Oilers in October 2015: 4-8-0, goal differential -7
  • Oilers in October 2016: 7-2-0, goal differential +10
  • Oilers in November 2015: 4-7-2, goal differential -6
  • Oilers in November 2016: 5-8-2 goal differential -3
  • Oilers in December 2015: 7-6-1, goal differential -9
  • Oilers in December 2016: 7-2-5, goal differential +3
  • Oilers in January 2016: 4-5-2, goal differential -5
  • Oilers in January 2017: 9-4-1, goal differential +8
  • Oilers in February 2016: 3-8-2, goal differential -18
  • Oilers in February 2017: 6-6-0, goal differential -2
  • Oilers in March 2016: 8-8-0, goal differential +5
  • Oilers in March 2017: 7-3-1, goal differential +13
  • Oilers after 75, 2015-16: 29-39-7, goal differential -39
  • Oilers after 75, 2016-17: 41-25-9, goal differential +29
G76 a year ago was loss No. 40 by a 4-2 score to the Arizona Coyotes. Tonight is a big night, with a chance to secure the win that carries the team and town to the playoffs for the first time since 2006!

MCDAVID LORE!

  • Drew Doughty talks McDavid: “I’m the type of guy that likes to kind of get in people’s faces a little bit and chirping ‘em and stuff like that, so it makes me play better a lot of the times. It gets me into the games, and I think a lot of times throws the other players off their game, but in that last instance with him I obviously didn’t throw him off, because he owned me.” Source

 WHAT TO EXPECT FROM MARCH

  • At home to: Detroit, NY Islanders, Pittsburgh, Montreal (Expected: 2-2-0) (Actual 1-2-1)
  • At home to: Dallas, Boston, Vancouver, Los Angeles (Expected: 3-1-0) (Actual 4-0-0)
  • On the road to: Anaheim, Colorado (Expected: 1-1-0) (Actual: 1-1-0)
  • At home to: Colorado, Los Angeles, San Jose (Expected 1-1-1) (Actual: 1-0-0)
  • Overall expected result: 7-5-1, 15 points in 13 games
  • Current results: 7-3-1, 15 points in 11 games

The month is covered based on original expectations, but these final games have major importance for the final standings. Win both, and Edmonton enters April with a very real chance to host the opening game of their series. Lose both, and it could mean wild card and a road trip to Anaheim or Chicago. Plenty of work to do!

CHEMISTRY

  • Connor McDavid on finding chemistry for a new line: “It definitely takes a few games, five-six games to really get a good idea. I mean, to really fully get chemistry it takes a longer time, it’s nice that Leon, Patty and I have been able to stick together for a long time now. I definitely hope that continues, we’re all pretty comfortable with each other.”

THE BEST LINES NEED GOOD TIMING

This is 5×5 Goals-for per 60 (by line) and Corsica.Hockey. Lines below are >100 minutes together:

  1. Maroon-McDavid-Eberle 3.94/60 (140 minutes)
  2. Maroon-Nuge-Eberle 3.35/60 (126 minutes)
  3. Maroon-McDavid-Draisaitl 3.34/60 (457 minutes)
  4. Lucic-McDavid-Eberle 2.72/60 (229 minutes)
  5. Pouliot-Nuge-Eberle 2.60/60 (143 minutes)
  6. Lucic-Nuge-Eberle 2.27/60 (257 minutes)
  7. Hendricks-Letestu-Kassian 1.72/60 (129 minutes)
  8. Source

The 457 minutes line is the current gold standard, No. 1 among lines with 400 or more minutes this season (there are 16 such lines this year) . Here are the Oilers lines as currently constructed (again from Corsica). I used Iiro Pakarinen as 4R, Zack Kassian owned that job for much of the season so there is a small sample size outside of Letestu-Kassian.

  1. Maroon-McDavid-Draisaitl 3.34/60 (457 minutes)
  2. Lucic-Nuge-Eberle 2.27/60 (257 minutes)
  3. Pouliot-Desharnais-Kassian 3.03/60 (85 minutes)
  4. Hendricks-Letestu-Pakarinen 2.00/60  (36 minutes)

CREDIT WHERE DUE

No matter how much credit one bestows on Connor McDavid it won’t be enough to fairly reflect the change in the weather. From the LA rain scenes in Blade Runner to the first sighting of the beach at Zihuatanejo, it has been a fantastic climb. After McDavid, Cam Talbot and Leon Draisaitl are worthy recipients of praise, then it becomes a sticky wicket.

Why? Well, it’s complicated. We are beyond a house divided on this one, so in a case of that kind I think it only reasonable for one to express their opinion and allow the other man or woman in the conversation their voice in turn. Listening well is becoming a rare thing these days, we’re all guilty of waiting for silence and then jackhammering dissenting opinion. That is what passes for communications these days, but let’s see if we—you and I—can have a conversation about this season and credit. I’ll go first, and promise to listen to you. Let’s begin the conversation with the general manager.

PETER CHIARELLI

  • The Good: He fixed the goaltending (Talbot over Ben Scrivens) and improved the blue (Sekera, Larsson, Benning in and Nikita Nikitin, Andrew Ference, Justin Schultz out) and hired an NHL coach. He added productive wingers like Maroon and Kassian, and of course he was fortunate to be the one announcing the selection of Connor McDavid at the 2015 draft.
  • The Bad: The Reinhart and Hall trades are also a part of his resume—a big part—and that has to be considered as well. I think it comes down to all of us, individually, answering this question: Can Chiarelli, in your estimation, lose those two trades and still win the war? My answer is yes, your answer may not be the same. What I don’t believe benefits us is arguing about whether the trades were wins or losses. Based on the value on day of, both trades were poor. That isn’t the same as saying Adam Larsson has been no help at all.
  • My Opinion: For me, getting this team to the playoffs is a giant win, it would be foolish to deny it. It’s also true there was more than one way to deliver improvement on defense, including Jason Demers and P.K. Subban. That said, Larsson arrived with a dandy contract and substantial term, giving the general manager room to wheel. We may not have done it this way, but that’s not really the point. The point is can this team win Stanley as currently assembled? I think the answer is yes, with two or three important additions.
  • What’s Next? Peter Chiarelli knows what he needs, and at this point it may be available on the open market. If the rumors are true, and Matt Duchene is in play, then a trade between these two teams may be possible. It would hurt for sure (Jesse Puljujarvi? Oscar Klefbom? Darnell Nurse? Nuge?) but Duchene can push the river. I doubt Peter Chiarelli feels a need to find redemption, but his workaround on the Hall trade is skating in Denver at this time.

ALEX THOMAS

I’ve watched a lot of you folks do amazing things over the 15 or so years since I signed in to HFboards, even met a few along the way. Alex Thomas joins an impressive list of bloggers/broadcasters/writers who have carved their own way and found a voice in the Oilogosphere. I don’t claim to have any authority over the group of people who write about the Oilers everyday, but can say that Thomas has been able to chronicle the team from hundreds of miles away with clarity. I enjoyed meeting Alex and his Dad, and congratulate him (and Megan) on the community that is The Oilers Rig. The story linked here is well worth the read.

EXPANSION DRAFT

ESPN’s four horsemen had a lash at the Vegas Golden Knights expansion draft, and it looks like Benoit Pouliot or Mark Letestu are the most likely losses. Here is my current expansion list:

  • Goal: Cam Talbot
  • Defense: Andrej Sekera, Adam Larsson, Oscar Klefbom
  • Forwards: Leon Draisaitl, Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, Milan Lucic, Jordan Eberle, Patrick Maroon, Zack Kassian, Jujhar Khaira
  • Ineligible: Connor McDavid, Darnell Nurse, Matt Benning, Jesse Puljujarvi, Anton Slepyshev, Drake Caggiula, Nick Ellis
  • Eligible: G Laurent Brossoit, D Mark Fayne, D Kris Russell, D Griffin Reinhart, D Jordan Oesterle, D Dillon Simpson, D David Musil, C Mark Letestu, C David Desharnais, L Benoit Pouliot, R Tyler Pitlick, R Iiro Pakarinen.

LOWDOWN WITH LOWETIDE

There are some shows you know are going to be favorites before you crack the mic. This morning at 10, TSN1260. Scheduled to appear:

  • Jonathan Willis, Oilers Nation. How much credit for Peter Chiarelli? Todd McLellan? Are the Oilers trending in a good direction as we enter the playoffs?
  • John Short, legend. For the entire hour (11-noon), legendary broadcaster/writer/newspaperman John Short will help us put what might be an historic day in Oilers history in perspective. A giant moment deserves a giant talent to offer commentary.

10-1260 text, @Lowetide on twitter.

I feel terrible for Kassian. The NHL seems determined to make him have to score 5 goals to have 1 count.

  2. BONE207 says:

Make up call if there ever was one

  3. The Trade Guy says:

I like that Pearson is incredulous over being called for a penalty after slashing the best player in the league five times and then punching him in the face. I’m no surprised though since the league loves mugging its best players.

  4. square_wheels says:

    The Trade Guy,

If anyone thinks the NHL has no corrupt officials, I’ll also ask you if you think there is no NHL p,ayers using performance enhancing drugs ?

What was that website where we could see the officials records vs our club ?

  5. Todd Macallan says:

Zack has to lead the league in disallowed goals, minimum 3 this year by my count.

  6. npanciroli says:

NHL really trying to ruin the game between confusing officiating, obstruction, challenge, puck over the glass rule, trapezoid. Baffling.

  7. delooper says:

    Todd Macallan:

Is anyone keeping track of that stat?

    I don’t get the correlation?

  10. LadiesloveSmid says:

Honestly, hard to keep interest in a game with 2 disallowed goals. Clenched ass the rest of the night thinking about how LA will win 3-2 when it could’ve been 4-1. Fuck sakes, nhl

  11. Crazy Pedestrian says:

    Awww…dd…

  12. square_wheels says:

    delooper,

I’d be curious how that lines up with the officials.

    treevojo,

People assume the NHL has infallible players and officials.

Way more than 3. 3 in the past month, yes.

I know what you mean… I swear these refs are so biased towards certain teams…
    *cough-Chicago….*cough cough- LA…

  16. BONE207 says:

Just think of clenched cheeks as kegels for guys

  17. dangilitis says:

This is really annoying we don’t deserve such a nail biter to clinch. This should be 4-1 and the 3rd line deserve at least a goal tonight. If McDavid scores 99 pts this season I hope bettman gets a video of the overturned goal to haunt him. I know they’re in the playoffs but with points at an absolute premium this game needs to be looked at by the NHL and I hope someone in coaching or management runs their mouth off about this. Calgary gets Edmontons sloppy seconds all week and this should be the easiest game.

  18. treevojo says:

Way too much money at stake.

    Nobody is infallible.

  19. square_wheels says:

    Kassian having a terrific game

  20. GMB3 says:

Sometimes Benoit Pouliot makes some ridiculous high skill plays. Forever one of the most confusing players I’ve ever watched.

  21. Crazy Pedestrian says:

Man McDavid just playing around with the LA defence there…

  22. square_wheels says:

    treevojo,

Exactly. It’s widespread in every sport, we’ve just covered our scandals much better.

As someone who is a pro cycling fan I can tell you shit is getting insane in Europe, the levels of corruption are extensive.

  23. Crazy Pedestrian says:

Hey sutter… I DARE you to pull the goalie early…

  24. GMB3 says:

Just when pro cycling claimed it had its PED testing dialled in……electric motors in the seat tube have been used for many years now. There’s a great scene of our beloved Canadian Giro winner Hesjadel where he wipes out but his bike has enough “momentum” that its crawling on its back tire in a circle.

  49. BONE207 says:

  50. Professor Q says:

    Really.

I don’t pay much attention to cycling but I read sports new everyday.

Never seen so much as an article on any of the mainstream media outlets here in Canada.

    Desert IIII

    Clay

Hunter1909’s fave play of tonight’s game: During the 2nd period: Draisaitl taking time to pause then brutally check a LAK player who was trying to take him out while he carried the puck in the offensive zone.

  66. Todd Macallan says:

Doughty punishing Tkacooke tomorrow would be the icing on this fantastic cake of a season (so far).

  67. LadiesloveSmid says:

2 disallowed goals on the way to clinching seems like the oilers way to do it.

The ’06 playoff run is what made me a true fan, the type that can name every player. For the first time in my fandom, I will see a playoff game. All of the life events that came between then and now. So many years of loving the team without the upside. So many failed restarts. It’s finally here. I will finally know something other than losing!

  87. who says:

Fun game to watch. Lots of back and forth. Wish they were all like that. Thought the oilers locked it down real good in the third.
Re the overturned goals. First one was goalie interference. Second was just a complete blown call. Feel for Kassian. He should be in double figures by now.

  88. Ronald Chevalier says:

Hopefully LA is pissed and whoops Calgary tomorrow. Would love to see the blues pass them and they have to play Chicago

    Well done

  91. LadiesloveSmid says:

I don’t want to play Calgary at all, finals with my flames fan roommate would be hell. Best case IMO is playing SJ, I don’t know that I want home ice advantage with how they’ve played at rogers place. Flames can die at the honda centre some more.

My friends, we’ve spent a long time in the wilderness but we’ve come home.

I wore my jersey from the 06 run tonight while watching this game, thinking a lot about where I was the last time this happened. By the end of the game, just for a moment none of that mattered.

When all was said and done for just a fleeting moment I felt nothing but joy, followed quickly by tears not of happiness but relief.

Let’s savour this moment, this memory together. But soon enough we shall see what this team is truly made of.

    Go Oilers.

    Also playoffs WOOOOOOOOOOTTTT!!!!!

    LT and my fellow Lowetideians

Back in 2006 I was a 21 year old, wide eyed 1st year med student who was living in a condo on whyte ave with my brother (Horcoff had just moved out of our building a year before). That playoff run was incredible and I accomplished very little on my summer project. Amazing memories spent with friends and family. A lot of shit has happened since then. I’m married, 2 kids, lots of medical training, just finished a masters, and living in the town of the evil Flames. My 2 year old son now chants “go Oilers go, boo flames.” Definitely not a sentence I could write back in 06.

I have remained faithful to this team, and it has certainly not been easy. LT, I am not lying when I say I have read this blog almost every day for the last 4-5 years. A heartfelt thanks to you and everyone in the community for keeping me interested and as passionate as each of you.

    Holy shit! Amazing!

Congratulations to the Edmonton OIlers on clinching a playoff berth!

An even bigger congratulations (the word is insufficient) to the fanbase, and especially the faithful here at Lowetide. I think I remember (it’s been so long!) first encountering this blog during the 06 cup run. It’s pretty sweet celebrating our return with you here tonight.

I’m raising a glass of whiskey to you all… and I may have another!

    Chachi:
Tip of the hat to Todd McLennan for calling a timeout with 1.5 seconds left to let the players and the fans in the arena really soak in the atmosphere. Well done. Also bonus points for making the scumbag kings wait a little longer before they could ooze their greasy way off the ice as losers.

I think that was more about getting them ready for a playoff atmosphere. “Heck yes I’m going to call a time out before a neutral-zone faceoff with 1.2 remaining. You think planning will lower our chances of winning?” It’s a nice psychological reinforcement that you should reach for anything, literally anything, that increases your chances of winning games (short of intentional injury).

The time out likely had minimal effect on the course of the face off. But especially with the timing of it, I think that was McLellan’s way of letting the players know that now that making the playoffs was over with, a whole new level in the importance of individual moments had arrived. I’ll be interested to see if that message resonates with the players. I would imagine we see an even better effort on Thursday.

    What the hell are pluoffs?

Oh yeah, that thing from the way back, before the pokkyclypse, when I wasn’t an old man.

  112. Soup Fascist says:

What are these “playoffs” of which you all speak?

  113. RexLibris says:

I’m happy that an entirely new generation of Oilers fans gets to see their team actually try to win something on the ice.

This is going to be exciting.

I see a lot of criticism and hammering on Oilers fans going on tonight on twitter, so I’m going to write here what I’ve got written for an article I’m putting up tomorrow afternoon at the Rig.

I believe that every day offers you the opportunity to prove to yourself and others the kind of person you really are.

I think this spring we’re going to find out a lot about some people, for better and for worse.

It should be easy to tell them apart and rather than rage and vent at them, just remember who says what and hang on to that for the future. For nothing can so undermine a man’s credibility as his own past.

Have a good evening everyone, and to our generous host, I hope you have a drink and then have another. Just don’t be late with the 8am post tomorrow. 😉

Congrats to LT and my fellow Lowetidians for pushing through to the other side. We damn well deserve it.

    Woodguy v2.0,

So how many bottles of whiskey are you earning from DSF?

  116. geowal says:

Thanks LT for guiding us through this difficult journey with realism and clarity, I don’t know if I would have maintained any real interest otherwise, who knows. I feel like my irrationality of the last 10 years is finally being rewarded. Cheers to all. Poured a Glencairn of the good stuff.

  117. Younger Oil says:

From 2004 to 2015, out of the 12 players that the Oilers took with their first pick in the draft, only 5 are still playing with the Oilers.

However, 11 out of 12 of these players will be in the playoffs this season. Only one won’t be.

  118. Professor Q says:

    Younger Oil,

The Blues haven’t clinched yet, so possibly 3.

  119. Washingtron says:

I don’t see how we win the draft lottery now…

  120. GMB3 says:

Seeing Jordan Eberle smile after the game.. that was great. He deserves it, a lot of hard years. I imagine all the losing took some of the shine off the game for him

    Hunter 1909,

Just curious, can you tell me what was the highest point total that anyone guessed, and also approximately what percent of predictors were 100 points or more? Thanks.

I believe I had the highest with 109 points . I did predict we would win the division and the conference so I was off a bit but still could be correct on the division.

Congrats to our Oilers. this is the beginning of a twenty year run in making the playoffs with multiple cups.
