2017 PLAYOFFS (G11): G5 OILERS AT DUCKS

If you read the msm, this series is already over. I get that, the Anaheim Ducks looked strong in their two games at Rogers. However, momentum has no church home of its own this spring, not in this series, and the Oilers have a story to tell. Yesterday’s papers don’t mean jack today.

All aboard the pain train, this weekend is going to be memorable. Tonight in Anaheim, Sunday in Edmonton, this series could be over by work on Monday. No team in this series has been able to win a home game, so don’t be surprised if the Ducks try to move the game to Phoenix.

I will tell you the Oilers are going to need superhero performances from Connor McDavid and Cam Talbot tonight, and a strong effort from all three pairings. Lots of talk about Ryan Getzlaf and coverage in the last 30 hours, I think Edmonton can solve that issue just by taking better care of the puck. Crisp passes, support, no cheating, nothing across the middle. Giddyup.

OILERS SCORING AND DEPTH CHART VS. ANAHEIM

  • The series is even and the GF-GA is very close as well, the difference coming in overtime on Wednesday.
  • I think we’re seeing Connor McDavid get more open looks now, that’s a good thing. Can he outscore Ryan Getzlaf tonight?
  • Will Todd McLellan move Leon Draisaitl to center tonight? Speeds suggested a lineup that featured MacDavid (wingers Pouliot & Slepyshev), Nugent-Hopkins (Lucic & Kassian) and Draisaitl (Maroon & Eberle). Are you onside with that line? Fascinating idea.
  • If the hockey Gods are listening, a big night for the Nuge line and a strong showing by the top two pairings would be nice. Oh, and a win!
  • As mentioned above, superlative performances from Connor McDavid and Cam Talbot absolutely has to happen. No pressure!

JESSE PULJUJARVI

The difficult draft+1 season for Edmonton’s top choice in the 2016 draft continues this weekend, with JP apparently on the bench for the first game at WHC’s. Puljujarvi is the second youngest player in the tournament, so perhaps that is less of a surprise than it should be for Oilers fans. He is easily the top prospect in the system, but may require more seasoning based on how his season rolled out. Is he better off playing in Europe, or spending another season in the AHL where he may not receive a feature role? Playing time is always a concern for Oilers prospects. If only the club had an AHL team under their control. Hockey30 has JP being shopped, I am dubious about the accuracy of that rumor. You can view the boxscores from games at the WHC’s here.

ETHAN BEAR

Ethan Bear is the No. 2 prospect in the system, and this week was named the WHL Defenseman of the Year. His progress since draft day 2015 has been very impressive, and he addresses an area of extreme need (RHD) in the organization. His offense in junior suggests he is one of the most promising players in the system, no matter the position. Here are the top 10 NHLE’s in the organization for 2016-17:

  1. Anton Slepyshev 14-34-48
  2. Jujhar Khaira 13-19-32
  3. Jesse Puljujarvi 13-18-31
  4. Joe Gambardella 13-18-31
  5. Tyler Vesel 12-18-30
  6. Joey Laleggia 17-11-28
  7. Tyler Benson 7-21-28
  8. Ethan Bear 9-14-23 (leading defenseman)
  9. Ryan Mantha 7-16-23
  10. Caleb Jones 3-19-22

STAN WEIR!

  • Stan Weir doesn’t wash his clothes, he disembowels them.
  • When Stan Weir was born he drove his mom home from the hospital.
  • Stan Weir can kill two stones with one bird.
  • There once was a street called Stan Weir, but the name was changed for public safety because nobody crosses Stan Weir and lives.
  • Big Foot claims he saw Stan Weir.
  • Stan Weir can strangle you with a cordless phone.
  • Stan Weir makes onions cry.
  • Stan Weir once bowled a perfect game. With a marble.
  • Cars look both ways before Stan Weir crosses the street.
  • Death once had a near-Stan-Weir experience.
  • Stan Weir can follow you into a revolving door and come out ahead of you.
  • Stan Weir will bring us winning, riches untold and shapely women prone to making terrible decisions.
  • Ladies and gentlemen, Stan Weir!

Yep.

Perhaps an uptick of luck will be in the cards for Edmonton. Cam Talbot needs to stop 30 before he lets in one, and Connor McDavid is going to need to be brilliant for three periods. Todd McLellan needs to push that 97 line past 20 minutes on the night and fresh troops fresh troops fresh troops. Stay out of the penalty box, no half-assing, bear down on the special teams.

Interesting article from Frank Seravalli. I had him on the Lowdown yesterday, we spoke at length on several subject (Leon to center, Eberle leaving) and his article from last night has some interesting quotes and takeaways. I’m uncertain we can take anything from game to game, this series seems to have momentum shifts in 15-minutes increments. However, it is true that Edmonton’s play after the no-call goalie interference was poor. This is the kind of thing that playoff experience should solve, but this spring may end up being a lot about lessons learned and not about Oilers hockey deep into May. Important to remember though, even with these lessons being learned, the Oilers are tied 2-2 in the Pacific Division Finals. Don’t count out any possibility now, it might make you look foolish.

LOWDOWN WITH LOWETIDE

JDI Хоккей: You mean before the goalie interference challenge?

I don’t think the goal was challenged, Oilers still have their time out.

  2. ashley says:

Todd Marchant’s OT goal gave birth to a generation of dedicated Oilers fans.

An equivalent number of fans will be ready to let the Oilers ship sail away from their lives if they suffer an embarrassing loss like this.

On the other hand, an entire new generation of fans could be added with an OT win here.

Huge period for this club and fanbase.

    Go Oilers!

  3. Oilanderp says:

    PLAYOFF HOCKEY OT IN MAAAAYYYYY!!!!!!!!

  4. --hudson-- says:

They were playing so well up to the end. The deflection of Drai reminded me of Kaberle shot in game 7

Jesus Christ. Larsson almost the goat again in the first minute.

  6. Jaxon says:

Larsson was Jultzing on that one.

nhl.com shows the visiting team challenged.

  9. HT Joe says:

    Réal Goudenyéu:
All you talking about the fix… Did the NHL also somehow engineer the other 2 goals?

I don’t think people are losing their minds over the other 2 goals… the point is the 3rd goal so obviously should not count, that that should be a major concern over the way the NHL calls games. Without that bogus goal, the Oilers win it in regulation.

  10. Oilanderp says:

    ashley,

    It’s game 5 🙂

  11. OmJo says:

    JDI Хоккей,

Could have sworn I heard one if the commentators say it wasn’t challenged but could be wrong.

  12. OmJo says:

So Ducks can dictate when refs blow the whistle?

  13. Jon K says:

Larsson cracking under the pressure and increased ice time. Ugh.

  14. JDI Хоккей says:

Ebs for a goal in OT please.

Where’s Vandemeer to bounce a beauty pass off the boards to him?

  15. Crazy Pedestrian says:

I’m not sure I can handle this… I might have to turn it off and hope…

  16. Evilas says:

So who here is remotely surprised?

    1. The Oilers do not know how to handle a big lead against the NHL Referees Association

    2. There is a clear bias

If I haven’t been so fricken invested in this team, I would quit watching this garbage.

Yes, obviously the Oilers need to be better, but WHAT IN THE ACTUAL HELL?

The blatant interference that isn’t being called is so beyond bullshit. I counted 7 clear non-calls committed by Anaheim in the third period and 1 that wasn’t called against the Oilers. Getzlaf, Corey, and Kessler are exempt from the penalty box in this series.

I saw Kesslers glove immediately. The refs are biased and we’ve seen it 2 games in a row in HD TV.

    Enjoy OT

  17. StixMalone says:

Colin Campbell should be fired what an asshole

  18. JDI Хоккей says:

    OmJo: commentators

Not sure what the least reliable resource is – commentators or nhl.com.

But it would explain a lot if the timeout wasn’t there for Toddler to take.

  19. BONE207 says:

I hope the Oilers have a more optimistic attitude than the collective Lowetidians

  20. The Hermit says:

Jon K: Could have sworn I heard one if the commentators say it wasn’t challenged but could be wrong.

My understanding is that if a goal Is scored in the last minute of a period that there is a automatic review.

  21. OmJo says:

    JDI Хоккей,

The TO should have been called after goal #2, IMO. But what’s done is done.

  22. Yak Efron says:

Odd, I didn’t say that quotation, but you are correct. Automatic in last minute.

  25. Jaxon says:

Shitty change to give a 4 on 2.

  26. delooper says:

Nothing to fear folks. NHL.com just told me oilers have a 3-2 lead with a minute it’s to go in the 3rd…

  27. spoiler says:

  31. JDI Хоккей says:

I wonder which movies Pouzar is watching?

  32. Oilanderp says:

Consisiently we have no wingers on the boards for an outlet pass from the D. Is there some magical way of getting out of the zone I dont know about and can you please tell the oilers about it?

  33. Gret99zky says:

The linesmen should just toss the puck to the Ducks D. # faceoffs

  34. Professor Q says:

  40. spoiler says:

Back and forth pressure by both teams. Line-matching is huge right now.

  41. Jaxon says:

Caggiula on the boards is amazing. He often wins those puck battles.

  42. Oilanderp says:

I told the refs I need a beer so they called icing *crack* CHEERS

  43. spoiler says:

Should have been at least two penalty calls that shift from the dead icing group

  92. HT Joe says:

Réal Goudenyéu: I get the out rage but the oilers allowed 2 other goals to put themselves in the position to have the NHL have to decide a game

I don’t understand what you’re trying to say here. Are you actually arguing that because the game was within 1 goal, the Oilers deserved to have the NHL take away the regulation win? Because with that logic, the NHL will have a high likelihood to decide nearly any 7-game series.

  93. The Hermit says:

    Entertaining first overtime period.

  98. Jon K says:

McDavid wants to win this badly. He had two massive shifts. If he got one more chance…

  99. Jaxon says:

I blame Lucic just as much or more than Pouliot on that penalty. He was coming off slow to begin with, but he was coming off at a certain pace. Pouliot was timing that pace to jump on while he watched the puck, but then Lucic made a brain fart move to slow down, stop and consider playing the puck. No. Get off the damn ice. He was caught a couple times last game going off slow too.

  100. Craig Zonit says:

    In Talbot We Trust.

  101. Zelepukin says:

    Larsson, 42min??? Man, that’s unreal.

  102. Thorin says:

Réal Goudenyéu: I get the out rage but the oilers allowed 2 other goals to put themselves in the position to have the NHL have to decide a game

That’s bullshit and you know it. Kesler is clearly intentionally interfering with Talbot while repeatedly tugging on his equipment. It doesn’t matter how many other goals were scored, it’s a clear and blatant and intentional breaking of the rules to get his team a clear competitive advantage. If the rules were even close to consistently called by the refs, this would have been no goal.

And to counter your bullshit argument, the Oilers made sure to get up by three goals just in case they allowed two weak goals against in the last few minutes.

  103. N64 says:

Réal Goudenyéu: I get the out rage but the oilers allowed 2 other goals to put themselves in the position to have the NHL have to decide a game

This morning I almost pulled us back to a comment made in yesterday’s thread that referenced a Greek proverb: παθήματα μαθήματα (something like “you live and learn” or literally “things suffered, things learned”). It’s a rather more optimistic variation on the famous line from the chorus in Aeschylus’ Agamemnon: πάθει μάθος (“in suffering, knowledge”). For Aeschylus (an Oilers fan before his time), that probably means something closer to “only in suffering can we know truth”. Or even bleaker: “for humans suffering is the only truth”. I held off because optimism seemed a better pose. Alas.

  141. Nuclear leak says:

Well was a fun run while it lasted

  142. LMHF#1 says:

One of the worst chokes I’ve seen this team manage. Including all of 2006-now.

    I want to vomit.

  143. Réal Goudenyéu says:

    Diablo:
Oilers deserved to lose that one

You are right but apparently the refs engineered this one too. You can’t give up a 3 goal lead. The game was ours to lose and fuck did we ever.

  144. In the Grease says:

Was just a matter of when, not if. Puke.

  145. Gret99zky says:

And done. Good luck on Sunday boys. I won’t be watching the handshake game. The reffing has ruined it for me.

  146. Professor Q says:

    Almost giving up.

    I legitimately hate the NHL.

  147. The Hermit says:

All the Oilers need to do is go on a two game winning streak.

  148. McSorley33 says:

    Truly epic

  149. russ99 says:

That sucks, but we didn’t threaten at all in 2OT.

Enough with splitting up Draisalt and McDavid until we have better shooters, we just don’t score that way.

  150. Ice Sage says:

Ice Sage: Nah – they’re just better than the Oilers.

Folks, it’s not going to happen – this is the Ducks’ series.

Oilers are too young and the league / refs are not allowing them to go further. We are supposed to enjoy this great leap forward.

Perry will score within 5 minutes.Goodnight!

    LOL

I hate being cynical-right. Just wrong about which period.

We are part of the WWE, just most of us don’t realize it.

In 2-3 years the Oilers will win the cup… but since it’s all a farce, who cares?

  151. Jon K says:

Man, some absolute heroics by some Oilers tonight and some outright awful performances by others. Lucic worse than also in picture on the game winning goal.

  152. striatic says:

    Whatever.

  153. In the Grease says:

Cannot see them winning two in a row now. That three and a half minutes was the series.

  154. J-Bo says:

    Cheaters. Plain and simple.

  155. thelongway says:

i’m putting my Eberle jersey back in the drawer 🙁

  156. RedNed says:

Pooh. I switched on to watch from just before Anaheim’s first goal. I would have switched it off after their third except it was my team that the ref’s have a hate on so it was the least I could do to keep watching. NHL should hang their heads, Oiler’s keep theirs high. I’m writing to Bettman et al to express my disgust. No other professional sport I’ve seen would tolerate such consistently bad reffing in multiple games in finals. Grrrr.

Okay. Backs to the Wall on Sunday (your time). Now we will see the character of our team with all the dross rubbed off. Go Oilers.

  157. Professor Q says:

    McDavid is absolutely livid.

  158. BONE207 says:

    McSorley33:
    Truly epic

This franchise knows how to do epic. That in itself is epic.

  159. russ99 says:

    Jon K:
Man, some absolute heroics by some Oulers tonight and some outright awful performances by others. Lucic worse than also in picture on the game winning goal.

Yeah, he could have dived, but it wouldn’t have changed anything, Benning and Nurse left the crease,

  160. gogliano says:

I’ve followed this league for a solid 30 years. This playoff season is the first time I’ve thought of just turning off the games and my fandom, as I’ve done for other sports.

    You suck, NHL.

  161. Réal Goudenyéu says:

    Professor Q:
    McDavid is absolutely livid.

Good he should be his team gave up a three goal lead with 5 minutes left in the game.

  162. Ice Sage says:

    Gret99zky:
Stan Weir once had a staring contest with the sun.The sun blinked.

Nope, stan weir fetched Getzlaf’s slippers and asked for more

  163. OF17 says:

    What an absolutely crushing loss.

  164. Professor Q says:

    Ice Sage: LOL

Like Shaw’s breakdown after his shot? Very WWE worthy.

  165. Zeabs93 says:

Réal Goudenyéu: Good he should be his team gave up a three goal lead with 5 minutes left in the game.

Just shut the hell up dude, honestly. So you’re saying that 3rd goal was good? The first 2 goals are irrelevant when the 3rd shouldn’t have even counted in the first place.

  166. SayItAin'tSo, Gretz, SayItAin'tSo! says:

    Well that was devastating

Worst choke I’ve seen since Canada blew up in the WJC GMG in 2011

Worst I’ve felt watching a hockey game since 2006

    Truly terrible final minutes

They blew the call. I’ve got nothing else to say about that

  167. HT Joe says:

Réal Goudenyéu: You are right but apparently the refs engineered this one too. You can’t give up a 3 goal lead. The game was ours to lose and fuck did we ever.

They didn’t give up a 3 goal lead… they gave up 2 goals, and the refs took the rest of the lead away from there. But keep telling yourself that the reffing was fair, and it’s okay for a duck to hold the Oiler goalie’s leg…

  168. Younger Oil says:

That may be the last NHL game I ever watch.

With the officiating the way it is, there is absolutely no legitimacy to this sport.

    Absolutely pathetic.

Yeah, the Oilers have probably deserved to lose all five games, but if the referees were competent, the Oilers would have won the past two games, and the series 4-1.

The referees should not decide the results of the game EVER. Let alone two consecutive playoff games.

    I’m floored.

  169. oilersfan says:

One had to think with the Sekera injury early the oilers would need a lucky bounce to win in ot with the dmen fatigue and lack of experience.

Did getzlaf ever leave the ice?

I said after the second the oilers couldn’t go into a shell and just sit back but I don’t think they forechecked the entire third period. Two unlucky bounces and a goal that shouldn’t have counted, but when you allow 22 shots in a period and apply zero pressure you leave yourself open to some bad breaks.

Letestu had a chance to clear with 20 seconds left and the puck bounced off his stick

I am sure all 200 Anaheim fans are thrilled but this stuck a knife into the hearts of 1 million edmontoniAns

  170. Jon K says:

The NHL Twitter account is unironically absurd right now.

    “Comeback. Complete.”

    Are you serious?

  171. thelongway says:
  172. Side says:

Sooo now can we blame the league and refs?

    Or…?

Oilers would have won this series already if it weren’t for this nonsense.

I am honestly amazed by how incompetent the league is.

  173. striatic says:

Kesler had more of a hold on Talbot for goal three than Draisaitl did on his penalty in the third. Them’s the breaks is one thing, but if one team is literally allowed to hold onto your goaltender’s leg, how is your goaltender supposed to play his position.

I don’t think this is WWE level. I think the refs were lazy and self righteous, rushed the review and missed the hold.

  174. LMHF#1 says:

I’m amazed at the lack of situational awareness this team shows.

You know what you do when a team pulls the goalie down 3-0 and 3-1?

You attack the puck super aggressively and score the damn back breaker. You don’t sit there and allow the puck to just keep going back to the point. All 3 late goals came from point shots because the Oilers have never corrected their d zone coverage’s gap in this area. It’s been 2 years and it costs them in nearly every single loss. This was just that magnified for everyone to see.

ANA knows they don’t have to play a full 60 at this point. The Oilers will just melt away and the game will come back.

  175. Thorin says:

Réal Goudenyéu: You are right but apparently the refs engineered this one too. You can’t give up a 3 goal lead. The game was ours to lose and fuck did we ever.

If the refs applied the goaltender interference rule as written, or as described in articles, or even just as they applied them earlier in the series, then the Oilers wouldn’t have given up a three goal lead. Instead, they would have finished on a powerplay. Even Ron MacLean after the game is now saying it should have been called.

But hey, you go ahead and keep saying it’s the Oilers fault. To me, it’s obvious that the Ducks plan was to run the Oilers’ d-men and the goalie. It was obvious all game long.

I used to not understand why people said the Ducks are a dirty team, but holy shit do they cheat at every opportunity.

  176. Zelepukin says:

I’m more hurt by the fact that you play an absolute beast of a game for 57min and then collapse for 3min. I mean really, 3-0 with 3min left?

It’s one thing to use the eventual crutch of, oh well we’re a young team and this is all a learning experience, but the reality is we don’t have to. Up 2-0, flub 3 games in a row with the third being a shoe-in win?

  177. Réal Goudenyéu says:

They’ve been Pro-Ducks themed all night. It’s been absolutely bizarre. Nothing about Edmonton except for Bardown’s article on Chiarelli being devastated.

  179. spoiler says:

So hard to go to Double OT with 5 dmen, two of which are basically rookies.

  180. SayItAin'tSo, Gretz, SayItAin'tSo! says:

    striatic,

You’re not wrong. They consistently became passive and collapsed to the middle of the ice when Anaheim pulled the goalie. Seems likely it is a strategy from coaching. They were succeeding with intense pressure before the last 3.5 minutes then completely melted down.

You do realize this series would have been won by the Oilers if the refs did their jobs, right?

  183. Captain's Log says:

I understand the frustration with the officiating in this game (and the last one too). I also think it’s completely justified. However, I am more frustrated with the Oilers lack of compete for the last 4-5 minutes of the third. Part of that is a young team learning, but sometimes it’s the veteran guys. Letestu had a chance to clear that puck before the tying goal and didn’t. Guys are just laying down hoping the puck doesn’t make it to the net instead of taking away a stick or a body, or winning a puck battle.

They’ll learn, but the difference between a veteran team and these Oilers is that a veteran team doesn’t allow these breaks to happen. They don’t allow a team down 3-0 to get 22 shots in the third period.

I’m sorry that you are amazed…it’s been going on for years… It’s just in our focus now that the Oilers are playing meaningful games.

Who are we kidding? Like this league will overturn a ‘goal’ with 15 seconds left??? Never.

Folks, don’t hurt yourselves by believing that the Oilers were EVER going to win this series. You’ve seen the evidence. Enjoy the last game Sunday and then ponder whether you want to continue to support this enterprise (NHL). I, for one, can appreciate the athleticism and artistry and am a sucker for an underdog… but this is a sham and the outcomes are not decided not the ice.

  189. LMHF#1 says:

Réal Goudenyéu: nah it’s the refs fault

Sarcasm understood. I understand why people seek comfort in that – and it sucks but shouldn’t have mattered at any point in this series.

I’m unbelievably pissed because this is a Conference final quality hockey team, that hasn’t played one excellent game yet in these playoffs. Not one. They are way below where they should be on a nightly basis. The series should have ended tonight, not because of opposite calls but because they’re that good. SJ should have taken 5 games max.

Instead they’re probably done – which means this team is not on the fast track and Todd McLellan still needs to prove he can coach in the playoffs. Based on this team’s mindset I don’t think he can.

  190. PunkInDrublic says:

That 3rd goal being called off was 100% a tv ratings call IMO. It kept viewers tuned in late into the night. One of the worst non-call goalie interference penalties you will see.

Hard lessons tonight. Well played Oilers.

  191. LMHF#1 says:

Side: You do realize this series would have been won by the Oilers if the refs did their jobs, right?

Never should have been in those situations in the first place. They are a much better hockey team than what we are seeing.

They’ve overturned a few Oilers goals in the last few seconds before.

Namely the damned Kings game where there were 2 other disallowed goals earlier on.
