NO SURPRISES

The Edmonton Oilers protected list is as expected and combined with the fabulous ineligibles, things look good leading up to the expansion draft.

PROTECTED AND INELIGIBLE

HAPPY FATHER’S DAY

We lived in Whonnock, past Haney a bit. I went to Thornhill School, my teacher was Mrs. Norman. She was the best teacher in history. Other kids called her ‘iron pants’ and I thought that was horrible. How could they? I rode bikes and chased my dog Colby and stole apples from my Grandpa’s tree and ate them. Grandpa had a giant horse named Tom, I would feed him apples, too. I had a good childhood, every kid deserves one.

My Dad and I would play cribbage sometimes at night, I loved doing it. He’d read the paper after supper (called Richard Nixon “Richard the Lying Hearted” and would laugh) and I’d linger just in case he wanted to play. If he got up from the table, then it wasn’t going to be a cribbage night. If we were going to play three games (less if you lost the first two), he’d tell me to grab the crib board and would start shuffling cards. We would play and chat, he’d impart his pearls of wisdom (“never let people confuse your kindness for weakness”) and I’d listen and nod.

My Dad had a yellow truck, I think it was a Mercury but could be wrong. We loved it, and when he decided to sell it, my brother and I were pretty upset. He would park it at the end of the driveway, with a For Sale sign on it, and drive the car to work. My brother, older and smarter, would park his ass beside the truck and tell people who stopped by that it had already been sold. Sometimes he’d take the For Sale sign out. True story.

When I introduced Mrs. Lowetide to my parents, he liked her right away. On maybe the third time we were visiting, Jo-Anne (that’s Mrs. Lowetide) got a terrible stomach ache at about one in the morning. Dad and I drove from Southgate (that’s where Mom and Dad lived) to the all night drug store on Jasper Avenue to get her a hot water bottle. While I drove, Dad told me she was a fine person and I was lucky to have found her. Probably used all of 10 words doing it and said it in the dark silence of a rolling vehicle at 2am with both of us staring straight ahead. There’s nothing like a Father who cares enough to tell you what’s true. Miss you Dad.

GOOD PLAYERS AVAILABLE!

At first blush, it appears there are about one dozen excellent players available for draft and trade. Peter Chiarelli has a chance to do business in the next few days with George McPhee. Here are some names.

DEFENSE

  • LD Calvin DeHaan, NY Islanders. A fine player.
  • RD Sami  Vatanen, Anaheim Ducks. Talented, inconsistent.
  • RD Matt Dumba, Minnesota Wild. Power play option, chaos in his game.
  • RD Josh Manson, Anaheim Ducks. A dream solution to 2RHD
  • RD Jason Demers, Florida Panthers. Veteran D visited Edmonton as UFA last summer.
  • LD Brandon Davidson, Montreal Canadiens. Would love to see him back.
  • RD Colin Miller, Boston Bruins. If available, interesting option.

FORWARDS

  • LC Brock Nelson, NY Islanders. What is Snow doing?
  • R Jonathan Marchessault, Florida Panthers. Brilliant player, surprise exposure.
  • C-R Ryan Strome, NY Islanders (69gp, 13-17-30). Rumors.
  • L James Neal, Nashville Predators. Volume shooter.
  • R Pontus Aberg, Nashville Predators. Intriguing youngster.
  • R Josh Anderson, Columbus Blue Jackets. Scored 17 goals, has size.

I did this on the fly, apologies if there are errors or omissions. More to come.

Right Handed D men of note

    Josh Manson *
    Sami Vatenan *
    Trevor van Riemsdyk
    Jason Demers
    Matt Dumba
    Cody Franson

    * sounds like a deal is in place for Vegas to take Vatanen

    Left Handed Dmen of note
    Scandella
    De Hann
    Kronwall
    Jack Johnson
    Brayden McNabb
    Brandon Davidson
    Marc Methot
    Brenden Dillon

Vegas will be able to cobble together a D core that will not be a bottom feeder.

And if they were to take Manson ( they wont) but if they were to take Manson, their right side would be better than Larsson, Benning and Gryba.

  2. frjohnk says:

Id be surprised if Vegas picks Reinhart looking at the Dmen that have been exposed.

Teams might be enticing Vegas to take some of their bigger contracts.

Vegas will be looking at some value contracts/players as well.

I think Khaira is the guy picked up by Vegas.

  3. Lowetide says:

I like the Matt Dumba option, depending on price.

  4. Brantford Boy says:

No surprise Nashville went 4-4-1, but Islanders 5(D)-3(F)-1 is quite interesting…
Some good/great goalies on this list, I think Laurent Brossoit is a long shot for selection now…
Lots of talent/need up for grabs and/or trade… maybe Chia can get Ference to go to VGK 🙂
Khaira or Reinhart… coin flip says Khaira… let’s make it a two out of three…

I think Khaira is the guy picked, but Chiarelli had to cough up a non-first round draft pick to guarantee they lay off Reinhart. Reinhart is more important with Sekera hurt.

I wonder how many teams would be calling Vegas on Dumba.

    Bidding war

  7. McSorley33 says:

    frjohnk,

Completely agree ….LV D should be pretty deep.

    Also, agree on GR.

  8. Cahoon says:

When I saw the title I thought it was a re series article even though we are done. It’s a great Radiohead song.

I also think it’s Khaira they pick, with a non zero chance there is a deal for them to take Pouliot

  9. Acumen says:

They’re guaranteed to have a great right side of their D, a quality G, and a deep, young, balanced and rock solid defence corps. That’s enough to assure a competitive roster from year one and something that is vey tough to cobble together for any team. Took us ten years.

Honestly, Pouliot (or Khaira) would probably present better value to them than Reinhart in terms of fielding a competitive roster.

  10. McSorley33 says:

Again, I know I am in the minority….but Letestu turns 33 this coming season.

I say he will be out of the league in 24-36 months.

    JJ turns 23 ……

Was LV really going to take Letestu?

  11. DBO says:

Happy Father’s Day lads. Expecting our first any day now, could be today, so I assume all your wishes come true this day every year? Or did I totally miss how this day is supposed to go?

I know Vegas is making moves for picks, or so it seems. But they could have a solid team this year if they picked up players. Even from your list above, add Mrazek as a goalie from Detroit plus Fleury and you have a great goalie tandem. Add in Grubauer and you have goalie depth or a trade chip in Mrazek. Pick up Manson, DeHaan, Dumba, Davidson and you have a young top 4 or at least the basis for one that most teams would envy. Throw in Colin Miller, Bogosian, Methot and Murray from Columbus and you have an NHL defence from day 1 with trade pieces at deadline or right away.

Taking Murray and probably Bogosian gets you high picks to lay off their other players and take on contract. Isles may send you a pick to take Strome instead of DeHaan.

Add in Neal, Marchessault , Brouwer, Stempniak, Sodeberg, Eakin. Khaira , Cammalleri, Grabner, Read, Hagelin, Boedker, Paajarvi and you get solid NHLers with trade options now or at deadline plus added to the Russian signings and you have an actual veteran team for a few years.

They could ice a solid team, with good defence and lots of picks. And. Have Mrazek and possibly more to use as trade pieces.

McSorley33: Was LV really going to take Letestu?

If they lay off picking roster players in exchange for 1st round picks as reported, then they might need a Letestu for a season or two.

But I agree with you and LT – protect Khaira over Testy.

  15. Lowetide says:

They’d be competing with a verbal from Oilers that he could sign Thursday and whatever he can get July 1.

  21. OilSafety says:

Congratulations DBO welcome to the team.

Go have a nap, you’re going to need it😉

If you get a chance cook a few caseroles and put them in the freezer for the fist week or so. I recommend the Costco chicken chowmein and the manicotti.

    Great time to be alive

  22. LMHF#1 says:

i take it ANA has that trade in place so that LV doesn’t take Manson and trade him for a ransom?

  23. DBO says:

I’m sure I am missing many players, and this is only quick glance at the lists. But this could be their team.

    Neal. Shipachyou. Grabner
    Cammalleri. Marchessault. Stempniak.
    Sodeberg . Eakin. Brouwer
    Khaira. Read. Boedker
    Paajarvi. Duke(kid they signed)

    DeHaan. Manson
    Methot. Dumba
    Davidson. Bogosian
    Murray. Miller

    Fleury
    Mrazek
    Grubauer

Gives them Mrazek as a goalie chip. Neal, Grabner, Stempniak, and a few more as trade deadline pieces who are UFAs. The other 5 picks are AHL guys . Add in some deals with teams like Edmonton and others who move AHL solid prospects for NHL players and you suddenly have a competitive team from Day one and depth with the extra picks this year from teams like Columbus, possibly Anaheim and Isles to lay off their players. Pick from Buffalo and Colorado and Calgary to take bad contract of Bogosian and Soderberg and Brouwer and you have probably 8 to 10 picks in first 2 to 3 rounds.

  24. N64 says:

gadot10: I think Khaira is the guy picked, but Chiarelli had to cough up a non-first round draft pick to guarantee they lay off Reinhart.Reinhart is more important with Sekera hurt.

Or protect GR as a side effect of another deal.

  25. DBO says:

Thanks fellas. Coming at this later (am 42) in life so will be interesting. Kinda opposite of many. Travelled, lived abroad and across Canada, now starting family. Figure the little man and I will compete for who can nap the most. I’m determined to be competitive!

  26. Richard S.S. says:

Will Jordan Eberle bring back a #2RD and a #3RC/W from Vegas?

  27. N64 says:

And let’s remember Oil may already have a deal with Vegas to protect and sell and/or buy.

    Pierre LeBrun @PierreVLeBrun

A reminder: some of the players you will see exposed today may already be protected in another fashion by a side deal with Vegas.

  28. dustrock says:

Wonder how good the deal is. They definitely could have auctioned him off.

I can’t imagine what it would take to not have Manson on the roster in Vegas.

Either way, it looks like they’re getting their $500M worth.

  32. N64 says:

dustrock: Wonder how good the deal is. They definitely could have auctioned him off.

The rumor is that the deal allows Vegas to pick Vatenan. Anaheim gets something back for not trading him themselves before the deadline.

  33. JDI says:

Ducey: Fleury would not waive to go to CGY

I thought that was Bishop, or was it both?

  34. DBO says:

So what are we willing to deal for Vatanen or DeHaan ? You could have Vatanen for a Jones and a pick. But would we do our first? If they take Strome instead of DeHaan would you be willing to trade for Strome and Vatanen and give up our 1st and Puljujarvi? Or even just Puljujarvi? Too much? Not enough?

  35. frjohnk says:

The position that is most flush with good available players is right handed D,
The position that is lacking in good available players is center.

I bet Vegas is looking for centers in exchange for the D men they can pick.

DeHaan is a really good option, don’t know who you cast off to place him on the top two pairings (Sekera?). Nice problem to have though.

Vatanen will miss half the season to injury, just like Sekera. I dont think he is a target for the Oilers.

I think some of the RHD Oilers would look at are

    Trevor van Riemsdyk
    Jason Demers
    Matt Dumba
    Zach Bogoasian

I think Vegas would be looking at centers in return.

Mrs. Norman was my teacher in Grade 4 & 5. McQueen Elementary not Saskabush but the ‘iron pants’ description fits. She rapped me on the knuckles with a yardstick once. Didn’t realize an old battleship could move that quickly.

Corporal punishment. Ah, those were the good old days : )

Don’t know how teachers keep kids in line without a nuclear deterrent now. Being a Grade 8 teacher must be a nightmare these days.

  39. Oil2Oilers says:

I would bid 2017 & 2018 1st round picks for Josh Manson & 2017 2nd (Vegas will access to many of these)

No doubt. Could you use Nurse as a package to get you DeHaan and another piece? Or as JASONTHESCHOOLTEACHER just mentioned, get Vegas to take Nelson and trade for him using picks and prospects, then flip Nuge for Faulk (which I just can’t stop thinking is our best fit as much as I like Nuge)

    Bag of Pucks,

Speaking as a grade 8 teacher, I find it easy to keep ’em in line. An expressionless stare works wonders, better than my words do. But the one thing those teachers back then knew, like I am learning now, the best way to get those kids in line is to make sure they know you care about them. Once they realize you want their best, they are generally willing to trust you to lead them places in knowledge.

Happy Father’s Day to all current and impending fathers on here. Have a nap on me #napchat.

    JOFA:
    Ebsfor Dumba? Thoughts?

I think that’s fair value for Ebs.

Dumba is still young enough that the ‘chaos’ in his game could still be mitigated.

Young RHD with offensive upside. That ticks a lot of boxes on the ‘needs’ side of the ledger.

The downside is you’re trading one Regina lad for another, so someone’s still sneaking cases of Pil in the dressing room.

Beyond dumb. The alternative to exposing GR was to expose 3 more forwards. None of them was Eberle. If they wanted to protect GR that would be the direct or indirect result of a deal with Vegas.

We had a substitute teacher for half of Grade 6. She was fresh out of the UofS, small and meek. We were absolutely horrible to her.

Some time later, our family was making it’s near-monthly drive to our family farm, 3.5 hours away (south of Regina). Man these are exciting hockey times!

One of my earliest memories is a morning hockey game when I was 5 or 6, and my dad was gonna take me. We lived in Prince Albert but he worked in Lloydminster and spent the week away, driving all night friday to come home to my three sisters, my mom and I, then all night sunday to be back at work monday morning. Anyhow, I remember him waking me up at the crack of dawn and fixing me breakfast before we headed out. Scrambled eggs. It was the first time I ever saw him cook, and I remember him adding salt and pepper and that being the first time I ever realized what those things could do to food. Best eggs I have ever had in my life. No idea if we won the game, but I remember that he was there, and for some reason I remember those dang eggs.

Happy Fathers Day to all you Dad’s and to all your Dad’s and to theirs too.

    Team:

    Cammalleri – Marchessault – Neal
    Perron – Eakin – Grabner
    Boedker – Dano – Burrows
    Clifford – Grigorenko – Stempniak
    Khaira – Burmistrov – Read
    Rychel – Chaisson

    de Haan – Vatanen
    Sbisa – Bogosian
    Schmidt – Dumba
    Miller – Sustr
    Nesterov – van Reimsdyk

    Fleury
    Mrazek
    Korpisalo

Couple of tough ones… worst was Grubauer vs. Schmidt, which went back and forth. In the end, having Mrazek and Korpisalo offered enough coverage after Fleury’s contract expires, so the cheap, rising defenseman did it for me. On the other hand, Arizona offers exactly nothing interesting. Assumed Ottawa has a deal for Methot, and expect others like Neal or Marchessault might similarly not make it to Vegas.

    Thoughts?

    EDIT:
I’m over the cap by a bit but that doesn’t mean it wouldn’t get trimmed down with AHL demotions, and trades by the time the season starts. Is VGK required to draft below the cap at the time of expansion? Or do they only need to be compliant by start of season?

  80. smellyglove says:

Los Vegas faces the dual challenges of fielding a somewhat competitive team, soonish given the fickleness of a southern USA fanbase — with the regular forgiveness associated with an expansion team — while building a contender for the future.

No doubt the ‘win sooner’ philosophy would dictate no side deals and picking the cream of the crop, augmented with free agency, but Mcphee knows that’s a path to mediocrity — ie not focusing on building through the draft.

There’s no real reason for RFA’s to sign with Vegas, right? It would just be switching teams? No added incentive for them?

Sure sounds like they’re open to deals in exchange for not taking roster players.

So McPhee could have a fully stocked prospect cupboard and ice a near AHL team for a couple of seasons until all those prospects fall off the vine.

    The Vegas Team needs:
    (5) Goalies: a Staring and a Backup Goalie for the Big Club; a Starting and a Backup Goalie for the AHL Team (doesn’t need to clear waivers); and, a Goalie to trade.
    (18) Defensemen: 7 D for the Big Club (with a fair mix of RHD and LHD); 7 D for the AHL Team (with a fair mix of RHD and LHD that doesn’t need to clear waivers); and, at least 2 RHD and 2 LHD to trade.

But now that the protection lists have been published, someone should go through all the available players and see how many are waiver exempt:

Alternatively, a defender picked up for nothing because he played on an injury-plagued team in turmoil and didn’t fit the system, was protected by the Pens.

I doubt that Demers is done, and I don’t think he should be expected to turn a team around by himself, but I’m sure there’s a reasonable middle ground somewhere.

  98. highgloveside says:

Nuge and 1st for Dumba and Nelson?
    Vegas will desperately need centers.

I would prefer Vatanen but with him out until after Christmas from surgery and Sekera out until Christmas, that just doesn’t work unless Chairelli is willing to risk the first half of the season for long term gain. Either one of these dmen added and the Oilers top 4 is dynamite for the next 10 years.

Why all the love for Cody Eakin? If he is your 2nd line centre – well – you don’t have a 2nd line centre. The VGK need to trade for someone taking on the appearance of a 1st or 2nd line centre. They should have some decent D and or goaltending to find something resembling an offensive NHL centre.

Also, why would you take Brouwer, Cammalleri, et al, and their anchor contracts off of a team’s hands unless there was considerable sweetener? Big opportunity for GM. If he does not take advantage- shame on him.

You must have missed that Ducks and Wild could only save 3 dmen while Panthers picked 4 dmen over their in his prime recent free agent acquisition. Vatanen and Dumba are probably getting picked while Demers is probably not. Last year I was crazy in suggesting that Russell at one year was better than Demers for many. I was crazy for suggesting that You can’t evaluate Russell by his Corsi. Couple months ago I was crazy for suggesting that Demers is going to be left unprotected because of the terrible season he just had. I was even crazy for thinking he had a terrible season. Well here it is. The 5th most valuable defensemen on a team that struggled defensively could have been our 5 mil boat anchor for years

Highly competitive, young and best of all, cost controlled. For the same price as RNH you would have room for Dumba, this filling a hole on D for roughly the same cap space.

Sissons maybe a preference for some, but Eakin is more proven at this point I believe

Would that have meant that he is a waste of skin and the team hated him? Of course not, both Chia and McLellan clearly like him. But does the GM have to make long term choices for the view he has of the team? Of course he does. If the fact that a GM does something is the gold standard of the exact right thing to do every time, perhaps you could explain Garth Snows list sans de Haan?

What about Eberle and Pouliot for Sissons and a third pairing D who isn’t bad?

Is Demers being unprotected measure the quality of his talent or the quality of Florida’s d-core?

I would guess Florida wants to keep all of their defence in place. Pysyk and Petrovic are younger and paid less so represent higher value to VGK. Demers is older and paid more so represents lower value to VGK.

So while Demers had a poor season, his exposure is due to Florida’s strategy in managing their assets more than anything else. If there is a chance for Chia to get him, for one of our spare parts I pray he can make it happen. (Although I would also love to see them aim higher in Manson or Vatenen.)

leadfarmer: Psychiatrists need a DSM criteria for Isles GMs.

    LOL…very true!

But that’s my point, just because a GM did something (leaving Demers exposed) doesn’t make it a sane move. Or as Hudson eloquently described above, it was what the GM deemed the move with the least risk to lose a player he wants. I definitely wondered if Chia considered asking Sekera to waive in order to protect Reinhart….taking the risk that Vegas wouldn’t want an older D man coming off major knee surgery, thus ultimately keeping BOTH Seksy and Reinhart

Also I don’t quite get why Vegas is expected to pick Fleury. An ageing, declining, expensive goalie with a NMC and NTC ( I know it’s modified but the market for goalies is so crap that your pretty much stuck with it) isn’t what I’d be looking to build my team around especially that I get to pick from Mrazek, Grubauer, Raanta, Reimer all of whom are a decent bet to outplay Fleury. To me, that means that there is nothing official preventing Vegas from taking Manson.

PC should be doing everything he can (within reason) to get a formal deal in place involving Vegas taking Manson and flipping him to the Oilers.

    The issues:

    1) if he was something “lined up” with ANA already, he may not want to burn a bridge; and

    2) acquisition cost – this will be very expensive – we’d have to outbid a Vatanan plus. I’m not sure our first rounder and good prospect gets us there. Maybe our first rounder and Eberle with $2M retained? Maybe its JP? If very well could be Nuge plus.

What is Manson’s true value? How established is he as a 2nd pairing right now?

Considering the Ducks didn’t even ask Bieksa to waive his NMC, then you have to think a deal was reached, and both Vatanen and Manson are safe.

    Same offense.
Similar age. Manson 1 year older.
Manson has better against numbers when looking at high danger chances against and even when we look at DFA/60 against all and elites.

    Larsson cap hit of $4.1M
Manson has a cap hit of $825. RFA next year. Manson does not bring much offense, so his cap hit would be somewhere around Larssons.

Which is not the same as done well.

    N64: 4.5 or 5.5?

I guess 4.5 would be fair otherwise the house would win with 5.

I think with the cap dumps and trades there’s going to be a few first rounders heading their way. Sounds like the Jackets first is theirs already. Isles have a deal in place, sounds like ducks are sending Vatanen and something to protect Manson. I’m guessing someone is going to want one of Raanta Grubauer, Reimer, Mrazek. Looking at you Florida, but also Arizona is in the market for a goalie.

There’s one legendary forward thinking of coming to Mcdavid land, short term but proven, very very proven. Shooter

There’s one former Oiler that will come back if it can be worked out, it’s who you want it to be.

There’s several mid range defenders that have the Oilers on their want list, Russell may come back but at no more then another 1 year deal.

Don’t be shocked as you hear of more players putting Calgary on their no go list, only the California teams may be safe from the Mcdavid effect.

    rickithebear,

PC is not a get it done guy? You’re kidding right. When PC was hired the two things everyone knew he was going to do is wheel and deal and overpay some bottom of the roster guys (he’s been pretty good about that so far but I think Russels contract will be a slight overpayment). PC is a get it done guy.
They may not always be the right moves but he is going to make them whether you like it or not.
