OILERS AT 177: SKYLER BRIND’AMOUR

Brendan Ross, McKeens: “The son of former NHL star Rod Brind’Amour, Skyler was one player who immediately caught my eye at the OHL Cup. He’s a big kid with a great frame to build on and he owns some solid fundamental skills. At 6-foot-1, Brind’Amour has good length and he uses it as an advantage in his attacks. His puck skills, especially in traffic, are very impressive showing very little panic. His on-ice reads were excellent identifying soft areas and playing to them. Brind’Amour plays an OHL-style of game using quick touches and can extend possession time with his confident puck handling abilities. He came into the tournament as an unknown for me but quickly climbed my draft rankings.” Source

Steve Kournianos: He’s got the familiar name, but Brind’amour plays a different style to his father Rod, who won a Cup with Carolina in 2006 and played in nearly 1500 NHL games. Skyler is a strong-skating forward who is competent in all three zones and has potential for more, especially when you consider his size. He’s headed to Michigan State after brief stints with the South Kent School U18 Selects and the NTDP. Brind’amour is a cerebral player who hustles, competes and displays occasional periods of dominance. He doesn’t have breakaway speed but is difficult to slow down once he reaches top speed. Source

Confirmed to be playing BCHL next year, then off to Michigan State. http://www.chilliwackchiefs.net/skyler-brindamour-joins-chiefs

Lots of time to see him develop. Also incredibly young for his draft year. Chilliwack is also hosting the RBC cup this year.

Finding very little to complain about this draft.

    What’s with the pic LT?

If I had to quibble about one thing from this draft, it’s that we appear to really be banking on last year’s haul of defensemen. Only one taken this year and we’re down to one pick left. BPA on your own list is the way to draft however, regardless of position.

    Diablo,

The BCHL connection raised by DG is the only thing I can think of.

    doritogrande,

The lack of Dmen is the only thing I can think of too… but we’re down a pick this draft, just signed an OHLer in the off-season, and perhaps there’s plans for another at the prospect level. And we’ve got a pick to go.

    Makes sense.

FWIW, Eliteprospects has Brind’Amour playing a couple of games with the 18-year old NTDP team last year in addition to the 17-year old team. That can only be seen as a positive, right?

  9. Munny says:

    Diablo,

Lol, apparently LT didn’t like the pic either.

I put up posts and the go looking for captures. Cannot find one for this young man.

  11. Munny says:

And as that new pic shows, we have taken 8D and signed another over the past two drafts. I’m not minding the Fs.

    LOL!

    Good times.

    doritogrande,

    Absolutely.

He’s a bit of a mystery man hey? Which is kind of unusual given how famous his dad is in the hockey world.

Just don’t put up the obligatory Brind’Amour cup pic.

Also – so far no Oil Kings (said tongue in cheek).

Signed a local kid in Skinner though. From Edmonton. I think that covers that section off.

I bet money on Safin getting drafted by the OKings though.

    doritogrande,

Is Spokane predicted to be any good next season?

  19. doritogrande says:

Last pick Phillip Kemp, D from USNTDP.

  20. doritogrande says:

Kemp was last year’s NTDP team captain. 6’3 RHD.

    No idea, sorry.
