OILERS SIGN YAMAMOTO

The Edmonton Oilers signed first-round draft pick Kailer Yamamoto today. The signing comes later than Jesse Puljujarvi (July 13) but it is one of the earlier signings among the 31 first-round selections this summer.

50-MAN ROSTER, AUGUST 10

Yamamoto is a brilliant skill player and will no doubt get a lot of attention at rookie camp this fall and into main camp and preseason. There’s a slight chance he catches fire in preseason games, Edmonton may be wise to send him down to junior earlier than later.

His 2016-17 numbers were fantastic. He was 28-20-48 at 5×5 this year, behind only Cody Glass among WHL draft-eligible players. Top skill, fantastic speed, good scorer but a better playmaker. Size the only issue and he’s a lock for pro hockey fall 2018.

DRAFT DAY SCOUTING REPORTS

  • Corey Pronman: It takes a lot of talent for teams to be convinced that a player under 5.08
should go in the top 15, but Yamamoto clears that bar, partly on talent alone, and partly on a relatively weak draft class. He’s a plus skater, puck handler and passer. Yamamoto has great agility on his edges, combined with a good top gear. Source
  • The Black Book:  “An electric player with dynamic offensive ability, easily some of highest skill of any forward I watched this year, he’s just so small and at times took some big contact when I was viewing him. Love his aggressive nature and how he attacks puck carries from all angles, it puts players on edge.”

I ranked Yamamoto No. 11 on draft day and have received some note in certain areas for saying the young winger might push for an NHL job next season. The push back on that verbal surrounds his size (he is 5.08, 153) and that’s certainly a consideration. My response is that Yamamoto is one of the older players in the 2017 draft (he is just a few months younger than Jesse Puljujarvi) and his offensive ability is substantial. Among the players I looked at for the 2017 draft, only Elias Pettersson and Nick Suzuki posted better NHL equivalencies.

We really need to narrow down a nickname for the young man. I think The Admiral was pretty good, know there are others floating around.

*consults English to Hockey Nickname Dictionary*

    It’s going to be Yammer.

    Yammy or Yams

    Woodguy v2.0,

    Or rather “Yammy”

You have to have the “-Y” added.

    Schultzy
    Hallsy
    Jonesy
    Dubey

    etc etc.

We could always go with an actual title like Leon, who is “Leon the point farmer” circa the 2015-2016 season.

“Kailer the Killer”…. hmmm not quite…

    uhhhh… “Kail salad” ?

    -dodges thrown tomatoes-

First time he gets crushed in an WJC or NHL game we’ll have clip of Pierre Mcguire screaming “Hello Moto!!!” ala “Double Dion!” I predict

Yamamoto had a strong World Junior Showcase and don’t be surprised if he gets multiple pre-season games…at a minimum

Something tells me that LT is in fact not crazy for thinking that the Yamminator makes the team out of camp.

Bob has the pleasure of talking to people with the team, its clear they think highly of Yamamoto. They also left a small crack in the door for the kid. I think privately the management team is concerned with Jesse. (they’ll never say it like that, though)

  9. Centre of attention says:

    adamjames,

Kailer is the kind of kid who will pick the hugest dude on the enemy team and take a 10 stride run at him in the first period. Absolutely zero f***s given when it comes to physical play. He might bounce off the big guy and do not much damage but he will get right back up and keep going. He’s not Domi out there but he’s also no shrinking violet either.

  10. OriginalPouzar says:

Sure, keep Kailer out of camp but I can’t imagine he plays 10 games unless he truly looks like he’s able to produce 45 plus points that aren’t fully “zoomed”.

We keep talking about the need for value contracts going forward, cheap young players who outperform their cap hits.

We need Kailer to give us 3 full value contract years on his ELC and we simply cannot flush one this year if he’s not going to be a material performer.

  11. limit says:

    Centre of attention,
That is true. His comments prior to draft about haunting you for not drafting him matches his on ice style. Sorta plays a “F*ck you, Pay me” type of style.

  14. Centre of attention says:

    OriginalPouzar,

Exactly. Saying he makes the team out of camp is not as crazy as saying he stays.

IDK though. If he catches fire on a skill line the Oilers would totally keep him and burn a ELC year because Oilers. Then send him down again anyways once he cools off ala Leon / Pulju.

Yes, that’s the scouting report, however, that’s the style of play that could very well cause some issues and a reason why we simply isn’t ready to play in the NHL this year.

If he was like Johnny Gaudreau and he “knew his limitations” and simply avoided the corners and contact, then he’d likely have a better chance of sticking in the NHL as a teenager.

It’s not about bullying. Think about it like wrestling with your older brother. He is just a manlet, and no matter how much he tries, he will be outmuscled at every turn. Better be all world skill.

Its not about his being bullied, its about his body physically being able to withstand the NHL punishment. As has been said, he’s not a shrinking violet, he plays aggressively and doesn’t shy away from contact – that style will lead to a toll being taken on his body and he/it simply might be ready for it, yet.

Lol… There isn’t a player on the squad who doesn’t have multiple nicknames, why would we start limiting ourselves now? Besides the best nicknames always come out of the moment, usually as a second or third derivative. Sitting around and nicknaming someone over letting them happen is kind of like a studio-sat photo versus a candid photo. The candids are always better.

We really don’t need to do anything other than carry on carrying on.

  29. dustrock says:

Killer or Motor are easy and both fit.

Hockey nicknames might be the very worst part of hockey. Except for the interviews.

Speaking of which, I really liked Strome’s interview with Gregor. He seemed genuinely excited to be here. He said he talked to some unnamed players who faced us in the playoffs and they said the Oilers are legit.

Mentioned possibility of winning several times unprompted.

Calla himself a playmaker but said playing with McDavid he’d better be ready to shoot ha ha ha.

    yes and yes

    dustrock,

    How about “Killer Motor”? Haha.

And who wouldn’t be stoked to have a chance at the rotation of Connors RW. He’s in a contract year. This is his time to shine.

Wouldn’t be shocked to see a shooting% spike if he’s getting a lot of chances laid on a silver platter for him courtesy 97.

Imagine how many Maroon / Lucic / who ever have missed, chances that made you wince or throw your head back slightly wondering how the hell they missed that.

Eventually one of these chaps (could be the one you least expect) is just going to go on a shooting % bender with all these “McChances” if you will. He’ll clean up and score 50 and the Oilers will be in trouble then. The good kind of trouble though, the one after you win a Stanley fingers crossed.

Crazy to think about, but he could realistically break the 120 point mark for the first time since Sid in 07. The game has regressed to much more clutch and grab though and Sid easily has the power play advantage. McDavid is actually incredible.

Are the Oilers going to “Gilbert Brule” him, or are they going to “Mitch Marner” him?

Even Tambellini had the good sense to send Eberle back to junior, back to junior TWICE.

Because Yamamoto won’t be intimidated or bullied does NOT mean that he is not going to be “killed”. All it takes is one hit on that physically immature body.

Yup. There is a huge difference between being strong and him gaining some of his man strength.

The thing with undersized players is they’ve been targeted by less skilled l, bigger players since they joined junior. If they haven’t learned how to dance they don’t get drafted first round.

I’m not a doctor so I’m not going to presume whether his body is in jeopardy playing in a mans league. What I can see is a player with a nose for scoring. In the small amount of games I’ve watched he knows the scoring areas and is slippery enough to get open.

He’s defintely seeing playing time. We’re all curious. That includes the coaching staff.

Lowetide, you mentioned playmaking his dominant skill. Do you see a river pusher in him? Maybe not Taylor Hall but enough to bend a second line the right way?

Too soon to know. Even if he’s a complementary player, on this team, with these centermen, that’s going to be a lot. This year or next.

  36. Steve4 says:

    Yams, Yammy, Yammer…

What about “Sweet Potato” or “Sweet Potato Fries.” Could be SP or SPF for short.

  37. BONE207 says:

My submission for a nickname…Kato. If he plays at 150 pounds, he’ll get just as much abuse as Inspector Clouseau gave him. Not saying he can’t make the season but he’s going to have some maintenance days, I’m sure.

Agreed. And it came from a commentor trying to give a guy a nickname and he’s the only poster who uses it. I generally appreciate his other posts, so if that works for him, cool. I use Pujo, no one else does, and that’s fine too.

But basically none of the above other posts to name him will work. But the one post made in the right moment, and maybe the take-off from that, those are the ones that will stick. Trying to deliberately nickname someone doesn’t work as well as a nickname happening.

Compelt, regression to the meat… stuff like this needs to just happen to be good and fully adopted.

  41. Revolved says:

In some ways there is less uncertainty involved in drafting smaller players, as there is a long list of boys who matured early, dominated their peers because of it, and could not maintain their successful style against men. Apparently his junior team was not very strong either, so there may actually be a driver in there.

Too me, a big part of balance is in having different player types throughout the line up. We have checked off heavy a few times now, but in today’s NHL speedy forechecker is an equally important roll. I hope he doesn’t see the NHL this year, only because it means his competition showed so poorly.

    Domo Arigato, Kailer Yamamoto.

Well Eberle didn’t score like Yammer until his draft + 2.

I agree with the rest though.

I don’t want him on the team as a complementary player next year – if he’s on the team and using the first year of that ELC, I want him to be able to contribute on a consistent basis – both with and without 97.

We need three value years out of his ELC – we can’t waste one with him being a top 6 tweener.

  46. Acumen says:

    I vote Kailer Mastafrodo.

  47. Truth says:

KY works the best. He appears to be really slippery out there. It will be most likely be Yammer or Yams though.

  48. New Improved Darkness says:

Hmmm. He’s going to be Sandy “KY” Sabot—because he’s not a glass slipper.

A sabot is a structural device used in firearm or cannon ammunition to keep a sub-caliber flight projectile, such as a relatively small bullet or arrow-type projectile, in the center of the barrel when fired, if the bullet has a significantly smaller diameter than the bore diameter of the weapon used.

There’s even an APFSDS anti-tank round with a “saddle-back” configuration.

    Armour-piercing fin-stabilized discarding sabot.

    As seen on RobbieCop.

Hey, check out this shinebox, motherfucker.

  49. New Improved Darkness says:

    “Hey, what’s your nickname, Kailer?”

“Those who’ve seen my dark side call me ‘grease stain’—because that’s all that’s left when I’m done.”

“Eeeww, no need to air your dirty laundry.”

“Who’s talking linen? I’m talking street-wise Zambonis with giant, revolving, wire brushes.”

For Sale: Street Sweeper 12 ga.

    “Fender, or side mounted?”

“Jones patent rotary-underlever, rebounding backlocks, percussion fences, best foliate-scroll engraving—on both sides, baby.”

  50. New Improved Darkness says:

I can’t tell whether, behind the granite countertop Street Sweeper, that’s just a (mostly) harmless Chicago phone book, or an honest to God Thriving in Illinois for Dummies guide. (Man, are those things collector items.)

Would sure help if I could see the page colour.

A giant yellow book with yellow pages would certainly be titled “Dialing for Dummies”.

With a bonus appendix on speed dialing.

  51. New Improved Darkness says:

Truth be told, that’s how Dial Soap got it’s original name.

    Okay. I’m done now.
