PS G3 2017-18: OILERS AT JETS

The Edmonton Oilers exhibition record is 2-0-0 but a quick glance at tonight’s lineup (and Winnipeg’s) suggests we may see a road loss this evening. The Jets have a tendency to blow their foot off with penalties and cross-eyed goaltending, but the odds do not favor Edmonton.

PROJECTED OILERS ROSTER

  • The Yamamoto appearance is a push for the young man, but also a chance for Jesse Puljujarvi to recover from a crosscheck (via Jason Gregor via Original Pouzar).
  • The Letestu line staying together is a good sign for Jujhar Khaira, he’s auditioning for the Matt Hendricks role while playing the Matt Hendricks role.
  • All of the other forwards on this list may be dressing for (and I think we have it covered) their final game before being optioned to the minors. Exceptions could be Joey Laleggia and Joe Gambardella, but that’s a guess. We’re going to see a cull, and right soon!
  • The defensemen are going to be tested to their outer limits this evening, based on Winnipeg’s roster and the players not dressed for Edmonton.
  • On the other hand, if Stanton or Auvitu shine, that’s a quality arrow.
  • Ryan Mantha gets his chance to play in a pre-season game and earn another. I think Caleb Jones and Ethan Bear may get a second game, not as sure about Ziyat Paigin.
  • The goalies should be busy.

CUTS

The Oilers have a couple of games this weekend (back to back) so we may see staggered cuts over the next few days. It wouldn’t be at all surprising to see several of the Condors optioned in the next 24 hours. Candidates for early demotion might include Braden Christoffer, Ryan Hamilton (AHL), Evan Polei (AHL), Josh Currie (AHL), Kyle Platzer, Chad Butcher (AHL), Brian Ferlin (AHL, we haven’t heard much about him), Greg Chase, Patrick Russell, Zack O’Brien (AHL), Ben Betker and Edward Pasquale.

TYLER BENSON

The Vancouver Province has an article (via Steve Ewen) on the Giants and their coming season. Ewen asked Vancouver head coach Jason McKee (former coach and general manager of the Spruce Grove Saints of the AJHL) about Tyler Benson, and how to help him stay healthy.

  • McKee: “I think the biggest thing is that they’ve identified the problem now. He’s gone through the surgeries. He’s doing the rehab and he’s working extremely hard at it. He just needs to go through the process. Once he does that, we’ll get him back here — hopefully sooner than later — and we’ll continue down the development curve. He’s missed a lot of time, but it’s water under the bridge. We can’t worry about that now. We have to focus on what’s ahead of us for the player and the team.” Source

We wait.

Its going to be a tough one tonight but a good test for guys like Yamamoto, Stanton, etc.

I almost feel bad for a guy like Rattie who isn’t getting a chance to play with any skill.

For a guy that has a real shot at some games this year as a skill winger, I would have thought he’d get an early game with some of the skill NHLers.

    – Great post LT! RNH sure has his work cut out: power vs. power, and he’s got a vet who hasn’t played, and an 18 year old midget rook. They should get caved against 1st line

    – RNH is going to be “challenged” a lot with the blender leftover meat loaf leftovers all year IMO.

Is anyone using Shaw’s FreeRange Tv, if so have you figured out how to get around the licensing error when connecting a tablet/iPad to the tv?
As soon as I plug the lighting connector to the iPad and then to an hdmi a licensing error comes up.

    Thanks

    From my friend of course.

    – I agree: but tonight, he’s got no support playing against a tough bona-fide #1 NHL line

    – He will get caved, and fans be like: “RNH is a bum”

    – Then when Leon, playing “free bird” we be like: “he’s so much better than the Nuge

I’ll take it for 2017-18, and that might give us a legit shot at the Cup. But it would also probably mean that RNH gets traded in Summer 2018 not for 50 cents on the dollar, but for pennies. That’s not good, especially since it’s unclear who would take his place as tough-minute center.

  28. OriginalPouzar says:

    Lowetide:

10-1? Don’t be silly. The Oilers would need a shot on goal, or at least touch the puck on the Jets side of center to get a goal.

Yeah, I was hoping for an upgrade this summer, a similar physical crafty veteran with better skating and passing skills.

We have a puck mover for each pairing, not sure we need more unless they’re good in our zone without the puck, don’t want to make things harder on Talbot.

Gryba isn’t “a regular” – he’s the 7D but we have a long-term injury which will make him an interim regular. He will battle with the new 7D for ice.

With that said, Chia was express at the end of the playoffs that the D wasn’t good enough and there needed to be improvement to compete with the likes of ANA – he then proceeded to re-sign the free agent d-man that played in the spot in need of upgrade.

  47. Lowetide says:

Corsi for 15-9 5×5 for Winnipeg that period. Nuge line 4-3 on the period, Letesti line 3-4.So, when the NHLers are out there, Edmonton is getting their fair share. PP was awful. I saw Chris Kelly good that period on the PK, but nothing doing on the 5×5.

  48. oilinthepeg says:

  78. OriginalPouzar says:

I have been quite impressed with Jokinen tonight.

He looks like the player from prior to last season’s injury riddled season.

  79. Todd Macallan says:

HA! Redirect again, but it counts. Way more of a kicking motion too haha, poor Kailer got robbed.

  80. OriginalPouzar says:

Then Jokinen scores on the PP – nice switch at the blue line by the Oil to get Letstu on the off-wing and then decent pass to Jussi.

  81. russ99 says:

    Both were goals, Lose-a-Peg.

  82. Jaxon says:

So we all know it’s 4-1. Right?

  87. jm363561 says:

What’s the score? How is LB?

  88. Lowetide says:

3-1, LB was not sharp early but settled in and played well, stopped 12 or 14 iirc before leaving at mid-game.

Second Period: EDM 3-0 Corsi for 7-5 for Winnipeg
Total: EDM 3-1 Corsi for 22-14 5×5 for Winnipeg

  94. Professor Q says:

I know that Yamamoto “gave up the puck” there, but the guy checking him was a foot taller and likely 70 lbs heavier, and *he* was the one who was knocked down on the play.

Yamamoto is sturdier than you’d think.

  95. Munny says:

    Jaxon:

I sometimes think LT could sell online game programs for the pre-season games.

  96. Lowetide says:

  97. Lowetide says:

    Jaxon:
    Is Mantha #90?

Yes, but will eventually wear No. 8.

  98. Jaxon says:

I’m trying to watch Petan vs Yamamoto as a guide for what we might be looking at for Yamamoto’s future. Will Petan become a fulltime Jet this year who produces? What is Petan’s ceiling? He was even more prolific in the WHL than Yamamoto. Petan is a bit bigger (1″, 25 lbs). Petan and Tyler Ennis are Yamamoto’s closest comparables for size, draft position, and WHL production, and Ennis and Yamamoto have similar birthdays. I think we should temper our expectations for Yamamoto. He could be a great player but is likely a few years away.

EDIT: Googled “Petan Winnipeg Jets Training Camp 2013” with September, 2013 dates. The verbal from the articles that come up re: Petan are eerily similar to Yamamoto’s this fall.

  99. Jaxon says:

My goodness, i know it’s only pre-season, but has anyone ever seen a team as bland and meh as the Jets? I swear i kept fogetting who the Oilers were playing. If they were a vehicle, they’d be a dodge caravan.

  128. OriginalPouzar says:

Interesting game tonight, that’s for sure.

Absolute domination by the Jets in the first period but the Oilers basically returned the favor in the 2nd and the third was more even.

    A few things from me:

Brossoit – some wobble early but, at the end of the day, he weathered the storm in the first and only let in one goal (3 posts) – gave the team a chance to win.

Ellis – Half a game and didn’t give up a goal. Not a ton great chances but he stopped everything thrown at him (one post).

Jokinen – just fantastic tonight – good on the PK, always in the right position and his offence was somewhat unexpected from me. A number of very slick passes. Should have had another goal. I was VERY impressed.

Nuge – played well with Jokinen – this is going to be a nice combo. Played a ton of minutes and the chemistry with Jokinen looks like it coming.

Khaira – him and Letestu were great tonight. Khaira is quick and strong in his skating. He was confidant with the puck and making plays – if this is JJ, we have a very good 4th liner.

Letestu – looks fresh and quick – a very smart player.

Yamamoto – he’s pretty strong on his skates for a little guy. Uneven performance but he did make some slick plays and got better as the game went on. Definitely did not look out of place. He has a great stick checking guys – every time I’ve seen him play he’s knocking down passes and causing turnovers. Outplayed JP at this point.

Kelly – fine on the PK – did nothing else

AHLers – no one really did all that much. Rattie didn’t make anything happen. Laleggia was fast on the forecheck but didn’t accomplish anything. Malone had a couple decent shifts. Callahan ruffled some feathers – got a bit of agitator in him. Stanton was more solid than I expected – some nice plays in the defensive zone and tough on the boards.

Russell/Benning – Fairly solid in 1st pairing minutes against a good lineup – I’m happy with their play in this one.

Auvitu – definite offensive skill. Great passer, nice puck-mover. Not that great on the PP except for getting the puck up ice. One great defensive play to break up a 2 on 1. He could be a player

Gryba – not very good in the first – got better – standard Gryba.

A Caravan with a blower (Laine), fancy rims (Ehlers), and a big exhaust pipe (Schiefele).

    OriginalPouzar:

Should have had another goal.I was VERY impressed.

Nuge – played well with Jokinen – this is going to be a nice combo.Played a ton of minutes and the chemistry with Jokinen looks like it coming.

Khaira – him and Letestu were great tonight.Khaira is quick and strong in his skating. He was confidant with the puck and making plays – if this is JJ, we have a very good 4th liner.

Letestu – looks fresh and quick – a very smart player.

Yamamoto – he’s pretty strong on his skates for a little guy.Uneven performance but he did make some slick plays and got better as the game went on.Definitely did not look out of place. He has a great stick checking guys – every time I’ve seen him play he’s knocking down passes and causing turnovers.Outplayed JP at this point.

Kelly – fine on the PK – did nothing else

AHLers – no one really did all that much.Rattie didn’t make anything happen.Laleggia was fast on the forecheck but didn’t accomplish anything. Malone had a couple decent shifts. Callahan ruffled some feathers – got a bit of agitator in him.Stanton was more solid than I expected – some nice plays in the defensive zone and tough on the boards.

Russell/Benning – Fairly solid in 1st pairing minutes against a good lineup – I’m happy with their play in this one.

Auvitu – definite offensive skill. Great passer, nice puck-mover.Not that great on the PP except for getting the puck up ice. One great defensive play to break up a 2 on 1. He could be a player

Gryba – not very good in the first – got better – standard Gryba.

That’s a whole lot of material to work with.

  133. Seismic Source says:

With a big grin, Letestu said Jokinen is a left handed version of himself. Lol.

  135. OriginalPouzar says:

I’m so happy with Jokinen’s play tonight.

I know its one game but he did just what we all hoped he would do, and more – the little slick offensive plays, they were constant.

If this is the real Jokinen and the real Khaira then we should have a very deep lineup.

    Sample size, I know.

For those outside of the oilers blackout zone.

Being on the east coast the best and cheapest way to watch oilers games that I have found is to have a close family or group of friends split a satelite bill.

Up to six receivers at different locations on one bill.

I am fortunate that my parents cover the bell with centre ice bill and I cover the Netflix.

    Good deal I know.

I only missed 4 games all of last year and that was because of my old mans soccer league I play in.

But something to look into if you have the right situation.

    – RNH is going to be “challenged” a lot with the blender leftover meat loaf leftovers all year IMO.

They have been “back” in the league for a bunch of years, but I still literally forget they are in the NHL until the Oilers play them. Of course it’s good that they are back in the league because it has been decreed that the Oilers have to beat them in the playoffs in order to win the Stanley Cup.

Do you think Lou had him write the apology before or after he put Lupul’s nuts in a vise? That is an embarrassing walk back from someone who thought he was a lot smarter than he actually is.

I am with Pouzar ….JJ with his regular game. Brad Pitt let Hendricks go so Tmac has no choice now.

Jokkinen painfully slow…..but incredible passing and hockey sense.

Yam really impressed me tonight seems to be getting better as he gets more time….

    Eric Gryba was Eric Gryba…..

Will have to rewatch, but I thought Stanton was not bad.

  145. slopitch says:

Man it’s early but nice to see Jokinen-Nuge and 16-55-44 look good. If those lines can dial it up, hell even break even the Drai and McDavid will take care of the rest.

I remember a few occasions during the open session that Yamamoto went at McDavid (who had the puck) and came away with it. Puck hawk indeed. Now let’s send the kid to junior.

Let’s go get this Colin Miller kid and start the real games now shall we?!?

Ball is on JP’s court now. Yamamoto has outplayed him so far in the alertly going.

It’s time for JP to step up and take that job – don’t force management to make a really tough decision on Yamamoto – huge games this weekend for JP – come on Jesse.

Puljijarvi is going to have a great weekend and put himself back ahead of Kailer – he’s got to.

I wonder who he plays with assuming he plays on Friday? Nuge has played both games so I assume he doesn’t play on Friday. Maybe JP gets a push with Connor – their numbers together last year, in a small sample size, were quite good.

I want Yam nowhere near the NHL. Can we let one prospect marinate around here?
And JP? Send him to Bakersfield if he doesn’t show a pulse in the next 10 days.
