PS G4 2017-18: CANUCKS AT OILERS

The Edmonton Oilers play their fourth pre-season game tonight, against the Vancouver Canucks. The team from the left coast is bringing a group that barely qualifies as an NHL group, while the home team is giving three lines and two pairings worth of hopefuls a chance to shine. For fans, it’s an opportunity to see who will step up.

LIKELY LINEUP

  • The top line should rain down blows upon the Canucks tonight.
  • Iiro Pakarinen has the best chance of winning an NHL job among the men on the second line. Chris Kelly’s performance tonight probably needs to be impressive. Kailer Yamamoto remains a long shot but the fact he is here one week after the big games started is a very good arrow.
  • The third line includes three men who are unlikely to make the opening night lineup but could be recalls during the year. You could say the same thing about Mitch Callahan on the fourth line.
  • Yohann Auvitu has a chance to make this team, not sure it’s secure yet. Mark Fayne and Keegan Lowe are possible recalls during the year, Ryan Mantha’s presence in the lineup is a major tell in my opinion.

ANTON SLEPYSHEV

Anton Slepyshev is at “80 percent” according to Jason Gregor’s tweet and that should mean we’ll see him in the coming week. We’re now at a point where the battle for two spots (2R and 3R) comes down to four men: Drake Caggiula, Jesse Puljujarvi, Anton Slepyshev and Kailer Yamamoto. There are myriad possibilities of course, but the easiest route has Kailer Yamamoto heading back to junior and Jesse Puljujarvi heading to Bakersfield. Is that the best route? We wait.

The Original JDî: It’s a stretch, but with a little KY it fits.

    Impressive!

    Yammy it is!

    Yammer would also be acceptable.

Hockey Player Nicknames are so uncivilized.

    Professor Q,

    Yam Fries?

Jethro Tull: Sure thing. It goes great with any kind of bbq meat. Smoked brisket in particular.

I was thinking on top of potato pie… sometimes I think my parents lived through the Depression.

Kailer has done everything he can up to this point. I know WIN had a nice lineup but it was still early in preseason.

Things will start to get interesting tonight or after the weekend.

    Can Kailer keep it up?

Although he did well last night, all it means is he’d probably dominate the AHL if he had Elite players like Drai to take the tough D minutes.

    Grain of salt.

With that said, he looked great last night and there is not much more he can do to this point.

At the same time, some D-man I’ve never heard of has 5 points in the last two games for Van.

Brock Otten picked Samorukov as his breakout player in Guelph possibly putting up 40 points.

Kailer is pretty close to getting his 9 games.

Don’t especially like it, considering our recent and not so recent past with rushing first round picks, but if a player earns it, he earns it.

If it were just offense, I’d be less inclined. But he plays a pretty solid game without the puck too.

My only concern is what happens when we play a nasty heavy cheaty team, and he has to play a vicious board battle game. I’m not sure yet if he has Pat Kane’s evasiveness when other teams are trying to hit him to stop him, and the size and nastiness of players running with that opposition strategy are way different than in juniors.

Even though it will stop on opening night, I really love seeing the Oilers in home whites again, as it should be. Change that back and go back to the old division names and I’d be a happy hockey fan.

I look for Jesse Puljijarvi to have a very nice game tonight.

    russ99,

There was only a short period of Home Whites.

It was always Home Colours and then had a short transition period, and then switched back.
