Game Three 2017-18: Jets at Oilers

The Edmonton Oilers have a chance to put Saturday night behind them with a win over the Winnipeg Jets this evening. Anton Slepyshev will likely draw in, we’re not sure about Drake Caggiula’s status and perhaps there will be a Yohann Auvitu sighting. This  roster is not yet set. That’s a concern.

OILERS IN OCTOBER

  • Oilers in October 2015: 4-8-0, goal differential -7
  • Oilers in October 2016: 7-2-0, goal differential +10
  • Oilers in October 2017: 1-1-0, goal differential +2

WHAT TO EXPECT IN OCTOBER

  • At home to: Calgary (Expected: 1-0-0) (Actual 1-0-0)
  • On the road to: Vancouver  (Expected: 1-0-0) (Actual: 0-1-0)
  • At home to: Winnipeg, Ottawa, Carolina (Expected 1-1-1) (Actual: 0-0-0)
  • On the road to: Chicago, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh (Expected 1-1-1) (Actual 0-0-0)
  • At home to: Dallas, Washington (Expected 1-1-0) (Actual 0-0-0)
  • Overall expected result: 5-3-2, 12 points in  10 games
  • Current results: 1-1-0, 2 points after two games

The great thing about looking at a season in monthly capture is a single loss can be placed in context. A single loss isn’t the end of the world—that kind of pain awaits us in the playoffs. If the Oilers end October with 10 points instead of 12, it also isn’t the end of the world. That said, a three game winning streak during this home stand would set up the rest of the month very well. The next two games are fairly winnable but this edition of the Oilers should not be confused with the last one. There remains some unanswered questions and balance—that’s my word, you may have another—continues to elude this organization.

DEFENSE, 2017-18

  • It’s very early days, so this table doesn’t really give us enough to justify publishing. I’m mostly posting it just to get a feel for where we’re heading this winter with our numbers. The Puck IQ folks are looking at some innovative things, and we will eventually adopt them here.
  • The CorsiRel numbers are interesting, wonder if Russell—Benning stay together if these totals stay constant. I like that pairing overall but you’d like 50 percent possession on all three pairs. We are so early in the season that the rel numbers are farce but there are two pairings doing a helluva job in possession.
  • Check out the Nurse-Gryba SA/60  total. You’d think it is the McDavid push, and they do well together, but in these early days the puck is going in a very good direction with Nurse on the ice.
  • That tidbit, and the entire table, is courtesy NaturalStatTrick.

FORWARDS 2017-18

  • There are five forwards with points at 5×5 this season, two with points at 5×4. It’s very early.
  • Shots-per-60 is worth following this season, if only to track Connor McDavid’s total.
  • Possession hasn’t been a problem so far this year, that’s a big deal for me, your mileage may vary.
  • The Oilers need goals at 5×5 from lines 2-4. So far, they have one (Kris Russell) but this is early.
  • McDavid’s line took some time to adjust on Saturday, I expect we’ll see a motivated crew tonight. The Jets have had a slow start, I imagine there will be extra attention to detail from the road team this evening.

RIGHT WING, SECOND LINE

In preparing the RE series this summer, I had a helluva time sussing out the position. I finally settled on the following:

  1. Leon Draisaitl 79gp, 26-58-84
  2. Jesse Puljujarvi 65gp, 14-14-28
  3. Anton Slepyshev 70gp, 12-13-25
  4. Zack Kassian 74gp, 11-14-25
  5. Iiro Pakarinen 10gp, 1-1-2
  6. Ty Rattie 6gp, 1-1-2
  7. Source

I estimated we would see Leon Draisaitl would play 70 percent of his time with 97, the rest at center (Ryan Strome replacing). I did not project Kailer Yamamoto onto the NHL roster. I think my estimates reflect what the organization is currently experiencing. The position in question (2RW) has been populated by two different men in two games to begin the season and we’re headed for a third new player (Anton Slepyshev) based on practice lines from yesterday. At some point, we may see a trade, and a losing streak may well be the pressure point. Zack Kassian was productive in the role during his one game audition, that often means a return engagement at a later date.

I like the options available (Slepyshev, Kassian, Puljujarvi, Yamamoto, Caggiula) but am uncertain about all but one of these options offensively, and the guy I’m sure of just got drafted and may not be ready.

TONIGHT’S POSSIBLE LINEUP

  • Patrick Maroon—Connor McDavid—Leon Draisaitl
  • Milan Lucic—Ryan Nugent-Hopkins—Anton Slepyshev
  • Jussi Jokinen—Ryan Strome—Zack Kassian
  • Jujhar Khaira—Mark Letestu—Kailer Yamamoto/Iiro Pakarinen
  • Oscar Klefbom—Adam Larsson
  • Kris Russell—Matt Benning
  • Darnell Nurse—Eric Gryba
  • Cam Talbot (Laurent Brossoit)
  • Source

Drake Caggiula didn’t practice and is day-to-day, that item via Matty and he also talks about Khaira being the extra man at practice. That could mean Kailer Yamamoto gets another game, this time on a fourth line. That tells me the top three lines are going to get heavy action and 97 may double shift on occasion this evening.

Questions about this roster remain, but the possession numbers are strong and the team running away with the division (Vegas Golden Knights) can probably be caught. Oilers need these two points tonight, suspect we’ll see a supreme effort from 97.

I hope the boys come out fired up here. It’s a long way to Saturday with a record of 1-2 for this alleged playoff team. They are still young, and youngsters struggle with pressure, especially underperformance in the face of high expectations.

We can’t have the slow start tonight that this team is prone to.

It looks like they got the message.

    Bell 1437 and 1454.

  4. The Concept JDî says:

Nurse’s edge and edges look good so far.

  5. Lowetide says:

Some bad puck management in their own zone there, Oilers should have had it out a couple of times. Good game by Edmonton so far, but they are down a goal.

  6. The Trade Guy says:

Shades of bad oilers. They get some momentum and don’t score and then the puck ends up in their end and they flub around and its in the net.

  7. LMHF#1 says:

As a defenceman, one of the things you absolutely cannot do is get caught in the middle covering no one.

One of the reasons I can’t stand Kris Russell, and believe he is extremely weak in the playoffs is that he’s often guilty of this.

Just another example on that last goal.

You can’t just stand there in the middle.

  8. russ99 says:

Way too sloppy with the puck on both ends of the ice.

    A bit tire-firey

All our other players were chasing the puck, is he supposed to cover two guys at once?

    Optically better then Sat

  11. ashley says:

They must be frustrated to work that hard and be down. We need to tie it up before WPG turns this into a road trap game.

  12. Lowetide says:

We’re probably half a period from a line shuffle.

  13. russ99 says:

Lots of throwing pucks to nobody. Need some cohesion as a unit.

  14. LMHF#1 says:

russ99: All our other players were chasing the puck, is he supposed to cover two guys at once?

    No.

He’s supposed to commit and play one.

You can’t stand there and not choose once the play is happening.

    Fundamentals of defence.

  15. Lowetide says:

Some nice work by Strome there, Oscar’s shot is alarming.

  16. Pescador says:

Good shift Strome, nice to see

  17. Réal Goudenyéu says:

It appears it’s going to take a gargantuan effort to score tonight.

Talbot needs to shut the door.

  18. Professor Q says:

18 shots thus far, and some really good chances. Connor H. is just blocking everything he can, is all.

  19. OriginalPouzar says:

The ice is tilted – not all passes are crisp and tape to tape but we’ve got an ice tilt – I’m almost waiting for the flood gates – or waiting to get shut out.

  20. PokeCheck says:

Man, Talbot’s looking like he has no feel for the puck at all.

  21. Lowetide says:

2-0 Jets, real nice work by Winnipeg. Letestu got mixed up there on the high man.

  22. Réal Goudenyéu says:

I’ve got a bad feeling about this.

  28. leadfarmer says:

Oh Sekera please come back soon

  29. hunter1909 says:

Don’t worry. Just wait until Draisaitl or McDavid start scoring.

  30. LMHF#1 says:

Looked like goal #2 may also have been an issue relating to the fact that Todd has them chase.

Yamamoto wouldn’t be familiar with such an odd system yet.

  31. Professor Q says:

    hunter1909:
Nice to see Oilers fucking up prospects like they always do(Yamamoto, Puljaarvi)…

I think you might need to have a smoke and a drink and relax.

  32. Younger Oil says:

Our defence is not good enough without Sekera.

    Everyone saw this.

Signing Russell to four years is not what this team needed.

  33. hunter1909 says:

    Remember guys.

  34. Professor Q says:

    That’s actually the 3-goal lead.

  35. ashley says:

Awful pass by Klefbom. Brutal. Lucky there.

  36. russ99 says:

We’re not playing as a team.

Three guys go into the corner for the same puck.

  37. hunter1909 says:

Methinks we’re possibly watching a team that’s going to be playing .500 until Christmas.

    We’ll wait then.

  39. sliderule says:

Like first two games most of our shots from outside.

  42. Professor Q says:

hunter1909: Methinks we’re possibly watching a team that’s going to be playing .500 until Christmas.

If so, then okay. I still have hope. But we’ll deal with that when and if it comes. At least we’ll have Star Wars if the more negative outcome occurs…

But either way none of that will be reliant on how Yamamoto and Puljujärvi have been treated or will be treated, and I don’t think there is any evidence or sample size to say they’re being ruined.

  43. hunter1909 says:

Not ruined, but Puljujarvi starts looking more and more like some rustic Finn than any kind of blue chip prospect. Since Yakupov I’ve stopped paying attention to prospects. Most Oilers prospects fail anyway.

Yamamoto is too bloody tiny to play professional NHL hockey. Seriously, how anyone can argue this point goes outside of my imagination. Enjoy watching him get his ribs broken – which will shatter his confidence like RNH, another mainly-ruined draft pick.

Coyotes have so much invested in him, can’t see them giving up this early. Also not certain the Oilers want to get younger up the middle. That said, he is a talent for sure.

  64. Dicky94 says:

Oilers need to get a quick one. Jets will panic again.

Hockey isn’t a brute strength game like football. I see no discernable link between size and injuries. Pitlick vs Cogliano for example. Kailer can find a role, but he will be one dimensional ala eberle.

  67. Lowetide says:

That may be Yamamoto’s first shot on goal in the NHL.

  68. Pouzar says:

So in the last 2 min Beyak just called Nuge (McDavid) and Yam (Letestu).

    I don’t think he’s tired.

I don’t know. He seems to not be putting effort in (or at least not as much as he usually does), even when he has loads of open ice.

The Draisaitl-Nugent-Hopkins breakway at the end of the Penalty Kill and Drai passed to McDavid, and Connor seemed…lazy when he received it, letting the Jets player pick his pocket (after like 3 seconds of McDavid slowly stickhandling it).

  88. russ99 says:

Nice goal, Leon. Great pass, Connor.

Horrid play by Klefbom. When did we forget to play defense?

  116. Réal Goudenyéu says:

We are not going to outscore bad defense in the best league in the world. It’s not just the defenders. Really bad decisions by the forwards. That 2v1 down low on Klefbom started long before it got to that point. We need our forwards to make a renewed commitment to two way hockey.

  127. Derek says:

I wonder if Chiarelli is feeling silly about going into the regular season with 2 top 4 defensemen yet.

  128. Lowetide says:

    First period
    Winnipeg 2 Edmonton 0
Corsi for 5×5 27-19 for Edmonton
    Shots 5×5 15-11 for Edmonton
High Danger Chances 5×5 are four apiece

    Second period
    Winnipeg 2 Edmonton 2
Corsi for 5×5 21-13 for Winnipeg
    Shots 5×5 10-6 for Winnipeg
High Danger chances 5×5 3-2 Winnipeg

    Total
    Winnipeg 4 Edmonton 2

  129. Dino says:

Funny how the holes in the roster are the ones biting them
in the ass to start the season.

    1. Not enough scoring

    2. Not enough competent defence

Can we skip to trade deadline where we get Mike green and James Neal already?

  130. Réal Goudenyéu says:

    Derek:
I wonder if Chiarelli is feeling silly about going into the regular season with 2 top 4 defensemen yet.

He has to be concerned now – but I will say that the team to a man is not playing good defense.

  131. russ99 says:

Maybe Todd needs to show them playoff tape again.

You know, playing as a unit instead of oh my god, there’s the puck.

  132. hags9k says:

So this is the team without Sekera and without an outstanding Talbot…
    Need them both back soon.

  133. Pescador says:

    Dino:

    1. Not enough scoring

    2. Not enough competent defence

Can we skip to trade deadline where we get Mike green and James Neal already?

Agreed but Mike Green has nothing to do with defending

  134. hags9k says:

This team is very capable of winning 5-4 or 6-5. Let’s have one tonight.

  135. sliderule says:

The third jets goal Connor cheated for offence and left defence with three on two and they backed in.

The fourth Klefbom left the carrier to Talbot then didn’t tie up the shooter

Lots of weak defence by the team

It’s funny because I’m looking at the front page of the Edmonton Sun (October 7, 2017) right now while on my break and what do I see?

    “D-TERMINED

    Oilers commited to defence”

  137. OmJo says:

    hags9k:
So this is the team without Sekera and without an outstanding Talbot…

Sekera is a very good defenceman. I think some fans underestimated his impact on the backend.

Of course it doesn’t help when the forwards apparently don’t chip in. But yeah.

  138. Professor Q says:

How can they defend such a headline now?

  139. Pouzar says:

I love Fort Garry Pale Ale.

  141. DBO says:

Pescador: Agreed but Mike Green has nothing to do with defending

Stop stealing my trade ideas Dino. Been on that drum since the expansion draft.

Issue really is how much can they falter before they have to make a move. Unless they know Sekera is back after a month, but even then can we be 3-7 at end of month without panic?

And please go back to Draisatl at centre. They need to have two lines who can roll. Heck put Drai at RW with Nuge and Lucic.

  142. OmJo says:

    Lucic-Nuge-Draisaitl would be interesting ^^^

  143. russ99 says:

Finally Todd breaks up the first line.

Yamamoto at 1RW, Drai at 2C. Strome at 3RW.

    Lets go boys.

  144. russ99 says:

Omg, finally a cycle line. More please.

  145. Lowetide says:

Much better period, Yamamoto doing some interesting things out there. Skill.

  146. Oil2Oilers says:

Blender working so far, hopefully it is not to late

  147. striatic says:

    Smith .955
    Markstrom .943
    Hellebuyck .938

Let’s just keep in mind the quality of goaltending and luck the Oilers have been up against these past three games.

  148. Derek says:

Leon centering Slepy and Pak and the last forward line to hit the ice in the third period, deservedly so to my eye despite the goal. Pretty weak in his own end tonight. Seems to have picked it up though.

  149. Pescador says:

    The PP is limp again,
    perfect timing

  150. Pouzar says:

    Drop pass to nowhere.

Very fair, and the possession numbers are good for the third game in a row. That send, they need to have a care with the puck in their own end. Absolute tire fire, and we are now into the sixth period of same.

  153. OmJo says:

    Pouzar:
    Drop pass to nowhere.

We’ve greatly lowered our toe-drags/60 by trading Hall and Eberle but can’t seem to do the same with our drop-pass/60.

  154. Lowetide says:

Just a terrific play along the wall by Yamamoto there. Rode Copp into the end of the road. Very nice

  155. russ99 says:

McDavid needs to shoot that one.

  156. digger50 says:

Lowetide: Coyotes have so much invested in him, can’t see them giving up this early. Also not certain the Oilers want to get younger up the middle. That said, he is a talent for sure.

    Late reply.

I was being facetious with Dylan Strome for Nuge comments. Hinting that Peters trades terrify me.

  157. BeerMe says:

Oilers are playing like a one man team, and McDavid is playing like the Oilers are a 4-line team. Shoot the damn puck!

  161. Pouzar says:

  162. OmJo says:

The Oilers could really use a patented Laine goal right about now…

  163. ashley says:

Nobody looks as dangerous as when they are on a line with McDavid.

    From Great to ordinary.

  164. tcho says:

Trouba’s been a beast out there.

  165. Lowetide says:

Ehlers with the hat trick and well deserved. Great evening for the young man.

  166. Chachi says:

One way trip to Spokane for Yamamoto? They don’t need to see another 7 games of that do they?

  167. Réal Goudenyéu says:

The last 2 games do not paint a pretty picture of this team despite what the fancies say.

  168. SayItAin'tSo, Gretz, SayItAin'tSo! says:

Well two less than stellar efforts all right.

Yam with a turnover and a penalty after the coach gives you a late game shot? Take it as a learning experience but a bad end to an other wise good game.

McDavid wasn’t great tonight. Picked it up in the 3rd but lots of wide swoops. In fact that first line looked brutal on two goals against

Talbot… goals two and three can’t go in. Defense shouldn’t have backed up as much on goal three but still. Long season

I’ll step aside and allow the Game 3 meltdown to begin

Sucks they don’t play until Saturday

  169. Pescador says:

Wow, that was terrible. The Oilers don’t look like a good team that is unlucky.
They look like a team with shit defense & sub par goaltending

  170. Ben says:

    Auvitu, Brute?

  171. Pouzar says:

Mr. Poolman was real good tonight. I can hear the verbal in WPG already. #-Buff

He really shouldn’t be in the NHL to begin with, so I’m neither shocked not disappointed he’s making mistakes. He’s going to rip apart the WHL whenever he gets sent back down.

  173. Pouzar says:

Holy Shite…Kane was 5 for/30 against on da Corgis.

  174. Chachi says:

OmJo: He really shouldn’t be in the NHL to begin with, so I’m neither shocked not disappointed he’s making mistakes. He’s going to rip apart the WHL whenever he gets sent back down.

Yup. He should know what he needs to work on now; send him down.

  175. hoser313 says:

Holy cow. 2 awful games from the Russell – Benning pairing.

Their styles are too similar (ie small guys, both like backing in). Need to split them up.

  176. HT Joe says:

Yak with 2 goals tonight. Good for him

Sorry, missed your comment. And yes, good for him!!

  177. striatic says:

Lots of problems on the Oilers end to be sure, and perhaps the inflated Sv% in these games is a result of low percentage Oilers shots or something – although I really don’t think so – but when you have three games in a row versus goaltending like that, getting 1 win out of 3 is about as much as you should expect.

Talbot with .571 and .884 in the last two games just will not do. Not all on Talbot of course but the entire defensive structure of the Oilers needs to greatly improve.

  178. Professor Q says:

I wonder if Edmonton could persuade Vancouver to trade Benson to Spokane for a Memorial Cup run with Yamamoto?

  179. russ99 says:

Glad they have until Saturday, lots to work on. Chia should hit the phones.

  180. stush18 says:

Chachi: Yup. He should know what he needs to work on now; send him down.

I agree. Second goal was directly his fault, penalty late, and I think another goal against he was partly to blame.

    It’s time.

The crazy thing was how good they were defensively in the Calgary game.

Maybe a one game anomaly, or Calgary sucks. Lol.

But still. They’re a lot better than they’re showing on the ice the last two games.

Really hope it’s not the coaching. McLellan has a bit of a gruff personality, but he can’t go full Mike Keenan on them all the time or they’ll spit the bit.

Time for the leaders in the room to step up in a time of adversity too.

  183. digger50 says:

If you choose to get better through internal development then you have to play what you got, live with mistakes, and learn from them. That’s the play here.

Even if a trade is made, the general direction is still established.

stush18: I agree. Second goal was directly his fault, penalty late, and I think another goal against he was partly to blame.

    It’s time.

I actually think he has played well enough over the limited time he has played, but he is not going to be a difference maker at this stage of his development. They have lots of guys on the roster and the farm who would likely have the same impact as him.

  185. Pescador says:

    russ99:
Glad they have until Saturday, lots to work on. Chia should hit the phones.

Sadly the only GM he will be calling is the Condors

  186. jzed says:

Split McDavid and Draisatl up Send the kid down. Put your 4 lines together and run them out there. They are pros, had a taste last year, will quickly round into form as the ‘man, we’re good’ delusion wears off.

  187. Pouzar says:

Not sure what to believe in…..the Oilers that didn’t give Flames an inch all game or the Oilers that got outclassed for periods 2/3 against a porous Winnipeg D.

    hoser313:

Yes. They are getting answers though, I do think a D may be incoming. Vegas.

I’m absolutely not down on him. But he’s had two shots and is getting bumped around and chasing defensively.

It affects the other players when someone isn’t playing the sytem. Everyone else starts to scramble, players start playing others positions, trying to cover for them.

Tryouts over. Let’s get into a rythym.

  191. digger50 says:

    russ99:

Problem is they may get worse after a trade. After all, who will Peter trade? Doubt we will get much better if you trade a Strome, Khaira, Pakarinen type so who to move and will the return make us better?

Cap strapped teams have things sorted by now so few opportunities there. Expansion opportunities have passed. We have draft picks available. Or we have to move someone we’d rather keep.

Our GM has a history of overpaying. This is not shaping up well.

  192. stush18 says:

All of everything’s being said, I’m sure this was one of those twenty games LT talks about where the oilers are going to lose no matter what.

They worked the jets in the first and came into the intermission down 2-0.

I’m betting a week of practice will help.

I think they also look a lot more dangerous running mcdavid-Leon split up. Roll the three lines, and spot duty the fourth.

  193. Chachi says:

stush18: I’m absolutely not down on him. But he’s had two shots and is getting bumped around and chasing defensively.

That assumes he ever plays a decent number of games in a row.

  195. Pescador says:

    Lucic-Russell $10M

  196. Dino says:

Watching the Leafs look unstoppable makes the start of this season an even tougher pill to swallow right now.

Would it have hurt Chiarelli to try and get another d-man and RW as insurance in case the in-house growth doesn’t take place? I mean it is Mcdavid’s last cheap year. Wouldn’t you want to capitalize on it? I don’t get it guys.

  197. frjohnk says:

digger50: Our GM has a history of overpaying

Hopefully he learned his lesson and only gives up a 1st rounder for Reinhart this time.

  198. Mr. D. says:

Our forward contingent really needs to learn to finish and support the D.
