AHL Game Four: Condors at Reign

The Bakersfield Condors began the season thin at center and tonight their top man (Brad Malone) is in Philadelphia. Gerry Fleming has enough utility forwards to fill in the blanks but it’s less than ideal.

CONDORS TONIGHT

  • I am working on my Winter Top 20 list now, there are eight men on tonight’s roster who will be listed inside the 20 best Oilers’ prospects.
  • Jesse Puljujarvi is an excellent prospect. I don’t know how much offense he has, but going from Anton Lander to Josh Currie as his center is going to impact his productivity.
  • Joe Gambardella finally arrives on a feature line at center. I’ll be watching closely to see how much he can accomplish tonight.
  • Dave Gust is an AHL-only contract but can play at this level based on early returns.
  • The four horsemen defense are all playing tonight.
  • Nick Ellis gets the start tonight, probably Edward Pasquale tomorrow.

JUJHAR KHAIRA

The big forward is not in the lineup at the NHL level these days and the men in front of him (Brad Malone, Iiro Pakarinen) are playing well. Leon Draisaitl and Drake Caggiula are going to be coming back soon, forcing one forward to be optioned to Bakersfield or Spokane. I don’t think it necessarily happens this way, but I think Jujhar Khaira is at least a little vulnerable to trade in the coming days.

JESSE PULJUJARVI

If he can post crooked numbers against Ontario tonight and tomorrow, maybe we can begin the discussion about JP’s recall. Two men have played for the Condors this season before heading north (Anton Slepyshev and Brad Malone), perhaps Puljujarvi will be the third. He has six shots on goal and reports have him playing well with moments of exposure without the puck. The bonus dollars have not yet burned off and that too is a consideration. I’ll have updates in the comments section throughout the game.

Interesting push for Rattie and “demotion” for LaLeggia given the zeros for Rattie (including during NHL exhibition).

Good to see Ellis in net as Pasquale has two of the three starts.

With Lowe and Fayne out for a few weeks, the defence is young but I like it.

    Go Condors!

It will be interesting to see how Jesse does with the “lesser” center, however, isn’t the hope that he should be able to drive the offence in the AHL? If he can’t drive a line (the new catchphrase), then can we expect top 6 offence from him at the NHL level?

I think he’s got top 6 NHL offence so lets see him be “the man” in the AHL.

Caveat: He’s still a teenager, its so easy to forget – if he was drafted from the CHL, he wouldn’t even be eligible to play in the league.

are we finally close to a Kaira and prospect to Vegas for that RD ??

I believe Khaira is a prospect still so Khaira and prospect would be two prospects, essentially, wouldn’t it?

If our forwards are healthy (which should be coming in the next few days) the JJ is off the roster to make room for Drake and Drai (as we are only carrying 22) the, if they want to call up JP, who is the next man off the roster:

    1) Pak? Coach likes him even though he’s been somewhat meh the last few games

    2) Malone?

    3) Yamamoto to Spokane?

I spoke to Matt Iwanyk about this very thing this morning, he felt Malone going back most likely. I’m still learning to read Todd McLellan but would guess that would not be his first choice.

With respect to Puljujarvi and his bonus dollars – i’m not sure if that really is, or should be, a consideration. Oilers are in the bottom third of the league in terms of salary cap hit at the moment as they have oodles of cap room for this year. (And I’m still not sure why Poulliot was bought out this year instead of burying him in the AHL or why Strome for Eberle was needed for salary cap reasons).

Its the easiest and safest choice for sure.

At least we get another game with the same (similar) lineup tomorrow morning before any decisions have to be made.

Yamamoto’s body of work over 5 games isn’t enough for me to want to keep him. His work in game 5 was but he’s only been that player once – it was the first game he has created offence on his own, primary offence.

If he can consistently do that, then, yes, he is a true top 6 forward, however, can he? He’s got 4 more games (maybe) to show it but even if he does it a few more times, does that mean he can do it over 82 games in the NHL, as a 155 pound teenager?

They have $3.6 million or so in cap room if you add in all of the bonus dollars. some of that money won’t be cashed but PC appears to be accounting for it. JP’s bonus is $2.5 million. The oodles of cap room idea keeps coming up and it’s wrong. One of the reasons people are lambasting Chiarelli without considering all of the information. It’s a weird year for discussing things.

Aren’t the majority of Jesse’s potential bonuses unattainable?

If I’m not mistaken, performance bonuses for ELCs have parameters within the CBA and many of them are things such as “win Art Ross”, score 30G, etc.

Just checked – there are bonuses for 20G, 35A, .73PPG and a few other ice time milestones and then the rest are for league trophies.

  11. OriginalPouzar says:

Samorukov picks up an assist late in the 2nd – Guelph up 2-0 (they were outshot 20-2 in the first but held a 1-0 lead)

I’d venture a guess there’s little chance of JP hitting those numbers, but if you put him with McDavid who knows? Oilers have McDavid’s deal kicking in next year and are dealing with an overage of $825,000 or so, I think it’s a factor.

According to CapFriendly, we have $8.1 million in cap space. Adjusting for last year’s overage, that puts us at ~$7.3 million. If 97, Puljujarvi, Yamamoto, Slepy, Nurse, Benning and Caggiula all max out their bonuses, that’s about $7.8 million by my calculation. – but that’s not going to happen. Plus, we could get some benefit from Sekera’s LTIR, no? Am I missing anything?

Wait… so if Jesse plays only 1 game this year, but scores a second assist (i.e., 1 PPG), he would get a bonus? Good luck to the young man!

Yeah, it’s a bit of a mess because people keep thinking Sekera is on LTIR. I wrote about the actual number here

I personally think he’s in the AHL on merit right now (not a bash – he’s learning) but decreasing the potential for any bonuses to vest is a plus as well – not sure it is playing a roll in management’s decisions/plans but what do i know?

There is a minimum games requirement for certain bonuses.

  22. OriginalPouzar says:

dcsj: I thought Sekera was not yet on LTIR?

He’s not because there really isn’t any reason for it – it only provides cap relief if the team is at the cap ceiling and would be going over. If we went and acquired Doughty today, Sekera would be placed on LTIR to get cap relief – we’d then be hooped when he was ready to come off though.

    Hamilton our new wing hope.

    Got to develop him

The turnover was a mistake and the backcheck was weak kinda like Nuge the other night.

IF they feel JP has to be mistake free before giving him development time then they would be wise to trade him for value while they can.

  29. OriginalPouzar says:

Do you have any information that Hamilton got some sort of push in the game over Jesse due to Jesse’s mistake?

Maybe Hamilton just played better and got the puck to the net while Jesse didn’t? I haven’t heard a thing about Jesse’s ice being taken away or him moved off the top line during that game.

Just because Hamilton had 6 shots on net and Jesse 0 shots on net doesn’t actually mean anything about coaching and development – on its face, all it means is that Hamilton had a more material game getting the puck to the net.

On that topic. If you go to cap friendly and look at most people’s armchair GM teams, they are almost all over the cap by the amount of possible bonuses. It’s a bit annoying to see everybody saying, “Hey, look at this awesome team I built! Come on Chiarelli (or whatever GM it is).”, when they’re almost all over cap. How do you have a discussion about those teams if you don’t start with reality.

What are the rules as far as players comming off LTIR being sent down for conditioning. Could this be used short term for Caggiula, until Yamamoto is sent back to Junior. That is predicated on the Oilers intention is to send him back to junior this year. This would save risking JJ fom going thru the waiver process. Just curios if this would work?

  32. Lowetide says:

Chad Buther from Braden Christoffer and Evan Polei. Obviously.

For an actual condition stint, you can’t send a player on one unless they consent – Section 13.8. Its for a max of 14 days.

Also, Section 13.8 gives broad rights of the league to investigate and the section is express that it cannot be used to evade waivers.

With that said, Drake is on his ELC and exempt from waivers – we could just send him down for a few games, just like Slep.

I think they would only do this if he truly needed some time to get ready and, given he didn’t go to the AHL after his long injury in camp last year, I doubt it happens.

Samorukov with an assist and finishes plus 1 with 2 shots in a 2-1 win for Guelph – nice stat line for the defender.

Skinner has let in 5 goals on 17 shots through 2 and doesn’t start the 3rd.

Ellis stopped all 17 shots he faced in the first for the Condors – the Bake is up 1-0 after 1 – Chad Butcher from Christoffer and Polei.

JPs max cap hit really is at most 1.9 mil realistically. I think it’s safe to say he doesn’t win the Hart, finish in top 10 scoring

Very fair. Even with him in the minors all year, or not getting any bonus $$, club still has about $3.6 million. That’s one good player right now, and I do think PC will add.

  43. godot10 says:

Because the Oilers cannot risk letting a cent of McDavid’s almost for certain $3 million dollar bonus slip into next year, the OIlers really cannot take advantage of LTiR this year.

One has to spend McDavid’s cap space allocated for his bonus before LTIR becomes available. One can use LTIR only after one runs out of cap space.

It is arguably a flaw in the salary cap rules.

Makes no sense to keep JP in the minors to avoid his bonus while keeping Yamamoto in the NHL for the season, waisting a year of his ELC like they did with JP last season, and the old regime did with Draisaitl in his first year. At least to me.

What’s the right answer? I don’t really know. Now that Strome is starting to fit in more and get comfortable, try the experiment out. Him and McDavid. Most likely Draisaitl returns then when he returns. Or – sorry LT – put Nuge on McDavid’s wing. But save that ELC for Yamamoto when the big contracts start to kick in. He’s going to be an exceptional player, especially on McDavid’s wing, but if we aren’t pushing for a cup run this season – and I’d argue based on how Chiarelli handled the RW depth in the summer, we aren’t – it would be a waste to have Yamamoto up for 10 games.

Of course I could just be overly pessimistic and the Oilers might not have any intention to give him that 10th game. But the handling of JP last season makes me doubtful they’d be willing to do the right thing if his current .6 PPG pace [with McDavid] continues, and increases, by game 10.
