Game 13 2017-18: Red Wings at Oilers

As crazy as the start to this season has been, a strong November run would allow the Oilers to gain some ground on the long road back to the top teams in the Pacific. The problem with that plan? You can’t time turnarounds, and the problems facing Edmonton right now are more than enough to retard progress. Is there a path to success with a flawed roster? Any team with Connor McDavid has more than a puncher’s chance, but you cannot also include wobbly goaltending, poor special teams, half of the forward roster stuck and unproductive offensively. Winning consistently is a distant bell, out among the stars, for this Oilers team.

PIKES PEAK, YEAR OVER YEAR

  • Oilers in November 2015: 1-1-0, goal differential +1
  • Oilers in November 2016: 0-1-1, goal differential -3
  • Oilers in November 2017: 1-1-0, goal differential +2

Game three in 2015-16 November was a 4-2 loss to Chicago and last year it was a 4-3 shootout win over the New York Islanders. If Edmonton wins this afternoon, it will represent the best start to November of the Todd McLellan era.

AFTER 12, YEAR OVER YEAR

  • Oilers 15-16: 4-8-0, goal differential -7
  • Oilers 16-17: 8-3-1, goal differential +7
  • Oilers 17-18: 4-7-1, goal differential -9

Has the story already been written? Edmonton’s season so far holds a strong resemblance to 2015-16. G13 that season saw the Oilers win 4-2 over Philadephia. Last season was also a win (2-1 over Detroit). The Red Wings are off to a similar start season over season in terms of record, this should be an interesting game.

WHAT TO EXPECT FROM NOVEMBER?

  • At home to: Pittsburgh, New Jersey, Detroit (Expected: 2-1-0) (Actual 1-1-0)
  • On the road to: NYI, New Jersey, NYR, Washington (Expected: 1-2-1) (Actual: 0-0-0)
  • At home to: Vegas, St. Louis (Expected 1-1-0) (Actual: 0-0-0)
  • On the road to: Dallas, St. Louis, Detroit, Buffalo, Boston (Expected 2-2-1) (Actual 0-0-0)
  • At home to: Arizona, Toronto (Expected 1-1-0) (Actual 0-0-0)
  • Overall expected result: 7-7-2, 16 points in 16 games
  • Current results: 1-1-0, two points in two games

So far the Oilers are exactly covering the bet made for them by this blog before the month began. I have today’s game against the Red Wings as a win for Edmonton. Detroit is running Peter Mrzaek today, he’s 1-2-0, 2.39 and .913 career against the home team.

JP VERSUS MANTHA

I’m always comparing Jesse Puljujarvi to European kids who came over early to play in the AHL, but perhaps a player like Anthony Mantha (6.05, 225 and skilled) is a better comparable. Mantha didn’t emerge as an NHL player until draft +4, although that could be partly due to the Red Wings’ established handling of their prospects. He was cooked, might have been overcooked, but they didn’t have to worry about cap bonus issues and Mantha received an education in the cities of the nation.

Using this comparable, Puljujarvi seems to be running on time and his ETA in Edmonton should be set at fall 2019. Are you all ready for this? Is Peter Chiarelli ready for this? I wonder if JP will be a long-term option if he doesn’t turn out sooner. Kailer Yamamoto ate his lunch this fall, maybe he does it again next September.

MCDAVID’S LINEMATES

I keep having this circular discussion with an emailer that goes like this:

  • Emailer: “Oilers have to move Leon Draisaitl to center and take him off the McDavid line.”
  • Me: “Sure, agreed. Who plays right-wing on 97’s line.”
  • Emailer: “Everyone knows Jordan Eberle’s numbers were as good as Leon’s when he played RW with McDavid.”
  • Me: “Eberle is in Brooklyn.”
  • Emailer: “How hard is it to find a replacement for Jordan Eberle?”

Back when I did the 16-17 pre-season RE for Eberle, I wrote the following:

  • What does Eberle do well? Score goals. He scores 28 goals per 82 games, that is a dandy total in the modern era. A lot of times guys like Eberle are called complementary players, but he has shown an ability to score when not on a feature line. Now, it is a damned foolish thing to do, but Eberle could score on a line that did not boast the team’s top center.
  • What does he not do well? Most of the good offensive Oilers are not what you might call two-way types. Now, that can be overstated—if you are pushing the river then deficiencies without the puck are less harmful—but 14 doesn’t interrupt sorties like Benoit Pouliot (as an example).
  • Source

The Oilers haven’t replaced Jordan Eberle’s strengths nor have they upgraded on his deficiencies. I think Jesse Puljujarvi may eventually deliver what Eberle could not (solid two-way play) but am more convinced each day that the 28-goal man is going to be Kailer Yamamoto. The number one issue for Peter Chiarelli is that neither man is ready to push the river today.

CONNOR MCDAVID’S WINGERS

“The Edmonton Oilers need to move Leon Draisaitl to center. It’s a well known fact Jordan Eberle’s numbers with 97 were as good as Leon’s.” This, my friends, is a crazy conversation to be having today. I would suggest you try solving the problem that faces both Peter Chiarelli and Todd McLellan: Is there anyone on the roster or easily available by trade who can make Leon’s move to center conceivable this season? Suspect it is the single biggest reason Kailer Yamamoto’s NHL debut has lasted into November. The club may have had a workaround (Anton Slepyshev on the Nuge line) but the Russian got himself hurt last game. Natural Stat Trick is the source for numbers above.

It’s possible, Rattie is absolutely ripping up the AHL. I suspect the Oilers have always liked Rattie’s game and perhaps they believe they can unlock his game. It’s a risky bet though, because the 10 games you’re going to invest in the project need to be wins.

I think Anton Slepyshev has a chance in a feature role but his timing this year has been ghastly. The young man missed training camp completely, took time to get back to the game we know he can deliver, and is hurt again right after being elevated to the Nuge line. Talent along won’t get you to your goal, ask Murray Wilson (who had more talent than a few of the Habs who beat him out of a LW job hundreds of years ago). Slepy needs to stay healthy, if he can, Peter Chiarelli and Todd McLellan may be able to remain patient with Puljujarvi and Yamamoto. If Slepyshev remains unable, it’s down to Drake Caggiula and whatever the general manager can find out in the ether.

Wheres the swagger? For such a young team, confidence is key, especially when the vets havent done much. Last year Nurse and Maroon and Lucic etc. all had that cockiness to add to the team, i have not seen it at all this year save game 1.

I will cherish the memories from the 16-17 season forever.

Don’t love the mathematical odds of climbing to the playoffs, especially with this on-ice product.

GMB3: Detroit has a pretty strong commitment to playing solid team defence. Lot of guys in the right spot all game so far

It’s called “5 guys behind the puck at all times”
It’s facking horrible to watch, Oilers look dumbfounded

I have no time for Pak. So full credit to him today, hope he gets a goal, he’s earning it.

Actually…they may be prepping the arena for the bulls who take over this week. Goods hosts and all…

  7. Lowetide says:

Oilers are getting outworked (depending on who is on the ice) and the frustration is clear both fan and players. That said, you have to love the work being put in by this Red Wings team.

  8. russ99 says:

Can’t see how fans think our defensemen are the weak point of the team, when our forwards get chance after chance, clean looks and even open nets and still can’t score.

  9. OriginalPouzar says:

Oilers finally started to take the body – not sure why it took half a game and a big deficit to add actually body-checking to their aggressive forecheck (as I think they were pretty hard on the forecheck before).

Lots of offensive zone time and cycling and some pucks towards the net but no puck luck, no goals and along mistakes ending up in our net and they are going to need a big third period to come back in this one.

A late goal would have helped but I’ll take an early tally in the third to make it interesting.

  10. SayItAin'tSo, Gretz, SayItAin'tSo! says:

Well very half baked effort today.

    Super frustrating to watch

Couple chances at the end but couldn’t bury it.

Very unimpressed with the top line today.

2nd and 3rd lines have some jump

They gotta figure out a way fast to stop feeling sorry for themselves when a break goes against them

Return to the dark days when that becomes a feature

  11. Lowetide says:

    After two:

Detroit 3, Edmonton 0 (Detroit with the only goal that period)
Shots are Edmonton 21, Detroit 19 (13-10 Edmonton in the second)
Corsifor 5×5: Edmonton 38, Detroit 31 (Edmonton 21-16 in the second)

Oilers need to be smarter, faster and luckier to my eye.

  12. BONE207 says:

At least LT’s team scored 50 points again. Seems to be a lot of that in football lately.

MacT has Tambi slipping pills into Chias lattes. Mac’s sitting there thinking his perfectly laid out plans are working to take back the bus, while Gretz is hanging back watching it all play out with Mess on a leash to release at just the perfect time.

Atleast Drake and Dylan have some chemistry, Jokinen trying to make blades of steel passes isn’t helping much.

    It’s a team game lol.

Caggiula had at least crossed the blue line on the third goal.

I’m not sure the other forwards got back to the red line on that one.

  34. Jihat says:

Hi everybody, long-time reader, first-time poster here.

I know today’s probably a bad time to ask, but how does everyone feel about the season? The way the team is playing – lots of shots (but mostly mediocre in quality), lots of mistakes, inconsistent effort, middling goaltending… it feels like even making the playoffs would be incredibly unlikely.

It seems like our record is worse than it should be, since we’ve had some bad bounces, but at the same time I’m not at all convinced we’d be a playoff team. Other than Calgary, I haven’t seen a dominant effort yet.

    SK Oiler Fan,

I’m not convinced this is a coaching issue.

All four goals were failures of the players not of the system.

I don’t for a second believe TMac coaches Drai and McDavid to fly the zone.

The PK is a different ballgame though. It’s a bust right now

Me thinks it’s more about Young team and low confidence

  58. OriginalPouzar says:

At least that PP looked good although I’m surprised coach didn’t give the 4th line time on it as opposed to McDavid, Drai, etc. who really don’t deserve PP time tonight.

  59. StixMalone says:

This is a big mountain to climb especially knowing this team can’t win 2 in a row never mind a streak other than losing. No unity or fight in them. Every one on different pages and time zones….

  60. BONE207 says:

Pescador: I’m confident of a fruitless late season push

They dont have any strong PKers from the forward ranks.

That 05/06 team could roll 7 great pkers.

I’m not sure this team has one forward that could break into that group.

  66. SayItAin'tSo, Gretz, SayItAin'tSo! says:

    SK Oiler Fan,

Ya the PK and PP suffer from the same malaise.

There is zero movement, lots and lots of puck watching, no pressure no nothing.

On the last one tonight Nurse starts watching when it’s out at the point and he never once looks over his shoulder at the guy behind him.

    OriginalPouzar,

I suppose deserves a night off after carrying the team all year but after the first shift the top line has been full on invisible.

Genuinely curious because these are all grown men, players and coaches

He’s been saying for weeks they aren’t playing well, they aren’t sharp, they haven’t played a whole game where everyone is moving at 100%. and folks say “hey they should keep that in the room.”

Odd that they wouldn’t let him finish the game. Imagine if he was playing Ottawa and they did that, and he came back out with the other jersey on (yes, I know he’d be too late to be registered for the game list, but it’s fun imagining it, especially if he contributed to goals on both sides).

Russell same deal on D. How do we sign Nurse, who is actually a top 4, when a 5 or 6 earns 4×4 NMC? We’re stuck with that one too.

Draisaitl and McDavid make a mint next year and destroy all balance in the line up playing together.

This team is slower, financially crippled, and poorly coached in terms of special systems. Important players have been squandered for largely useless replacements, and our only goalies are under performing. I don’t believe we have an NHL backup right now.

How does this get better next year or afterwards?

I know that I’m pissed off, but some of these horrible trades and contracts have completely screwed any kind of repair. This season is already done and I am disturbed that we’ll have to find players to complement the dead weight in the forseeable future.

Well, if this continues for much longer and the Oilers aren’t in contention for the playoffs come new year, your are correct, there could be a mini-rebuild, however, I don’t think it will be the trading of Lucic and Russell as great as that would be.

The plan was for this team to be buyers at the deadline which I always had a bit of a concern about – we need cheap young value contracts but were likely going to trade picks/prospects for rentals.

Not only will we not trade away that draft pick currency, we may be able to pick up some very nice assets for our pending UFAs, Maroon and Letestu – both those players should have some nice value at the deadline.

This year’s draft is supposed to be good and deep.

Not that I’m cheering for this at this point, however, a one year off-season (if it is indeed one-off), could have the effect of setting us up very nice for the future.

Trading futures now will sign us up for a decade of mediocrity until the salary cap rises until some of these contracts expire and the McDavid and Drai contracts become palatable. And yes I do think Mcdavids contract was too high and I said it the day he signed it. You don’t give an RFA the highest contract in the league by 20%. TheVengeFulOne: Who wants to trade established players for picks now? Everybody thinks they have a shot at playoffs save Arizona. Help is not on the way. The boat was built with holes. There might be a deal at the deadline, but we probably can’t wait that long.

I’m not going to bail on these guys. It’s pretty obvious what needs to be done, and that’s not abandoning the plan:

    1. Replace Woodcroft: Special teams aren’t working. If the staff refuses to change than shake up the staff.

    2. Trade for a shooter to play with McDavid. I’d give up Puljujarvi and Bear at this point. We have a lot of similar players anyway who don’t have complete games, why keep prospects who don’t either.

    3. Send Yamamoto back to Spokane, he’s a distraction to the team, Keeping him would stall what needs to be done.

    4. Set up the team to play to our strengths. Three centers playing center. Bite the bullet, we need to do it before too much longer anyway, I’d go:

    Maroon – McDavid – Shooter X
    Lucic – Draisaitl – Slepyshev
    Strome – RNH – Kassian
    Jokinen – Letestu – Pakarinen

    5. Give Broissoit some starts, if we keep leaning on Talbot, he’s going to wear down before March.

    6. Call up Simpson. He has good chops at bofh ends of the ice and deserves a shot.

They had also been trying to trade Duchene for forever. There was probably more to that situation.

  181. flyfish1168 says:

Lowetide: There isn’t a lot to be pleasedabout. The best players were the fourth line.

Thank’s I hate to watch it, waste 3 hours that I won’t even enjoy and be frustrated going to bed.

I waste my time doing other things than watching the Oilers, but I saw the score…

Someone needs to get fired. I hope its Kevin Lowe!

It’d be faster just to punch yourself in the dick and endure the pain all at once.

Don’t do either… but if you must do one, use the fist.

Can’t agree with you on point number 2. Now is not the time to double down on this season by trading cheap young prospects. And I don’t consider that bailing on the team. Let’s see if the current roster can work their way out of this.

    neojanus,
No. You are right, it doesn’t. I think the Russell deal is far worse than Lucic though.

So… anyone else wondering how much of Russell’s resurgent season was due to playing with Sekera a lot and bacause McDavid/Talbot covered so many sins? Two more years after this one before that contract is trade-able (only a decent bet for trade in year 4).

    Awesome.

  187. neojanus says:

We gave up a pick for Chiarelli too. Hilarious.

don’t forget the pick for the coach.

You’re not talking to me are you? I didn’t suggest anything bad, but the Avs wanted to trade him for forever. They must have had a reason. Maybe they think he is soft like Eberle.

  190. JimmyV1965 says:

That was such a disturbing loss on so many fronts. In some ways it was similiar to the way we played during the decade of darkness. We didn’t get hemmed into our own zone like we did back then, but the guys simply didn’t show up. There was no energy, no push back, no sense of urgency. I hope it doesn’t reflect dressing room issues. Ebs and Hall are having great years and our GM is bleeding assets so badly that we don’t have enuf talent to ice two good lines. The coach is so frickin stubborn that he won’t even split up McDavid and Drai during their worst game of the season. If the GM and coach really are issues, does anyone have faith in ownership to make the right decisions? So disheartening.

  191. neojanus says:

    JimmyV1965,

Not immediately. If the Oilers remain near the bottom for the whole season then I think TMac goes… probably unfairly.

He hasn’t been left a lot of depth or speed on this team.

I am REALLY upset at Chiarelli tonight.

The real losers are the people who spend their money on Oilers tickets. I never go to games because it’s no different than gambling. Seriously what good are hockey players. Sure they donate but besides that they’re paid to entertain. Society doesn’t need hockey players. They don’t save lives or put out fires, they entertain and if they can’t entertain forget them.

Look at that cop that got attack by that terrorist in Edmonton. No one person tried helping that guy while he was attacked but yet people take it so personal when the Oilers loose. Just shows where our priorities are at when it comes to Oilers entertainment.

Society doesn’t need art majors either. What’s your point? What people freely choose to spend money on has no bearing on you. You are not entitled to take just because someone else has more. You do not get to dictate how free individuals spend their money. There is a growing problem of selfishness and authoritarianism in our society.

I have no idea what you are trying to say in the second paragraph. I can guarantee you would not have run towards a lunatic with a knife.

Turned a goal per game CHLer into a a ppg AHL player in 2.abit seasons, who was further developed at the NHL level. All Todd.

  198. OmJo says:

It doesn’t look good. I think I’d rather just stay the course and try to unload Lucic or Russell at the deadline. Maybe a team will be desperate for one of them. Lucic is at least producing better 5v5 now. Who am I kidding? Those contracts aren’t going anywhere.

I’m starting to see why despite winning a Stanley Cup, Chiarelli was fired by the Bruins. Look at his moves. He’s made some good moves, no denying that and I don’t want to seem like I am. But his good moves aren’t outplaying his bad moves, not helping the team move past them. They’re coming back to haunt us this season.

*** NOTE: This is such a basic way to look at his moves, but I’m on my phone at work so it’s the best I can do atm. Take all of this with a grain of salt if you read on. ***

    Eberle (11pts) + Hall (16) + Yakupov (7) + Barzal (13) + Stephens (0) = 47pts

    Maroon (10) + Lucic (6) + Strome (5) + Russell (4) + Reinhart (0) + Larsson* (3) + Jokinen (1) + Letestu (3) + Benning** (2) + Yamamoto*** (3) = 36pts****

Net change of -11. Twice as many players and still a net negative.

That’s a lot of offence missing. I don’t count McDavid and Draisaitl because those aren’t Chiarelli adds. To make it fairer for Chiarelli I didn’t include Schultz (3), Pouliot (6), or Pitlick (4). Lucic replaced Hall (-10), Strome replaced Eberle (-5), Jokinen replaced Pouliot (-5).Too many net losses offensively for this lineup in two years.

    * Larsson isn’t a offensive defenceman so take his pts with a grain of salt.
** I like Benning. Great add.
*** Yamamoto will produce offence. Only a matter of time.
    **** Talbot does exist.

  199. OmJo says:

    Hall with another goal.
