G15 2017-18: Oilers at Devils

In the 1960’s, people began to take action to make things safer. The vehicle industry scrambled after the release of Unsafe at Any Speed, people began to worry about the planet when the Cuyahoga River caught fire June 22, 1969 and DDT became a must to avoid. Still, there was danger that would be unrecognizable for modern humans, things I saw that you never will and that makes the world a better place. I rode the Boston Bar-North Bend “Ariel Ferry” and can say with authority it wasn’t as fun as it looked!

This week is the Boston Bar-North Bend Ariel Ferry for Oilers fans. Get across safely and all is well! Things are looking rosy! Fail, and it’s a long way down. Such is the state of the Oilers in the Pacific Division. Oh,one more thing: What do I remember most about the ride over on the Boston Bar run? The rocking of the entire contraption. Lordy.

THE ATHLETIC!

There’s still time to take advantage of the special Lowetide introductory offer which is here. Among the items on the menu today are:

One of the questions I posed in the (just dropped) Puljujarvi piece is “can JP beat goalies clean with his shot?” and I do think that’s a big item when discussing the player.

PIKES PEAK, YEAR OVER YEAR

  • Oilers in November 2015: 2-2-0, goal differential 0
  • Oilers in November 2016: 2-1-1, goal differential -2
  • Oilers in November 2017: 2-2-0, goal differential -1

Game Five in 2015-16 was a 4-1 loss to the Arizona Coyotes and last year saw Edmonton lose 4-3 to the Pittsburgh Penguins. The current edition of the team is running alongside previous McLellan Novembers, and maybe they take the lead this evening in Hoboken.

AFTER 14, YEAR OVER YEAR

  • Oilers 15-16: 5-9-0, goal differential -6
  • Oilers 16-17: 9-4-1, goal differential +7
  • Oilers 17-18: 5-8-1, goal differential -12

G15 in 2015-16 was a 4-2 loss to Chicago and the following year saw a 3-2 loss to the Dallas Stars. A win tonight moves this year’s model three points ahead of 2015-16 and within six points of one year ago.

WHAT TO EXPECT FROM NOVEMBER

  • At home to: Pittsburgh, New Jersey, Detroit (Expected: 2-1-0) (Actual 1-2-0)
  • On the road to: NYI, New Jersey, NYR, Washington (Expected: 1-2-1) (Actual: 1-0-0)
  • At home to: Vegas, St. Louis (Expected 1-1-0) (Actual: 0-0-0)
  • On the road to: Dallas, St. Louis, Detroit, Buffalo, Boston (Expected 2-2-1) (Actual 0-0-0)
  • At home to: Arizona, Toronto (Expected 1-1-0) (Actual 0-0-0)
  • Overall expected result: 7-7-2, 16 points in 16 games
  • Current results: 2-2-0, four points in four games

This is it, then. New Jersey is 6-3-1 in their last 10, the Rangers are on a terrific streak (five wins in a row), and Washington is 5-5-0 in their last 10.  Win two of three and we’re crawling from the wreckage. Lose two of three and it’s take the long way home.

PATRICK MAROON

Bob Stauffer was contemplating Patrick Maroon’s future yesterday, using his “I don’t know but I know” voice in discussing the possibility of this being the big man’s final season. I didn’t hear the conversation, but it sounds like Edmonton is going to want to add speed on the portside. For me, Maroon is an attractive option for re-signing, but the cap probably won’t allow anything that begins with a four. We see this all of the time, feature role given, value contract established, free agency, boom! Big contract with the New York Rangers. Been this way ever since the world began. I still think Maroon may end up signing with Edmonton, but if Peter Chiarelli identifies a suitable (and less expensive) option he may proceed with a trade to make negotiations moot.

THE NEED FOR SPEED

I think we’ll see a speedy winger added, maybe even on this road trip. Players keep getting hurt (Slepyshev likely to draw in for Caggiula tonight) maybe we see a Frank Vatrano or Michael Grabner come back west with the team after this road trip.

LOWDOWN WITH LOWETIDE

A fun, busy morning on the Lowdown beginning at 10 this morning, TSN1260. Scheduled to appear:

  • Bruce McCurdy, Cult of Hockey. Talbot was brilliant in Brooklyn, can he do it again?
  • Brian Rode, Marmot Basin. We’re back! Another season of brilliance in Canada’s wonderland.
  • Rob Vollman, ESPN and NHL.com. Vegas, baby! Plus Duchene trade.
  • Frank Seravalli, TSN. Trade list and can the Oilers crawl from the wreckage?

    Just kidding.

Nothing off the top of my head.

  7. OriginalPouzar says:

Solid third period – Lucic found his legs – had about 4 giveaways in the 3rd but was also skating well and making plays.

    High event period for Lucic.

Well earned point now lets get another.

Credit where credit due, he showed up tonight.

We need the 2nd line and 1st line to synchronize their offense. Moar wins that way.

  43. Zelepukin says:

Let’s be honest. We should never lose in OT when you can give McD the space to wind up like that.

  44. Pouzar says:

RNH on pace for 60 pts…bypass the 50s altogether!!!!

  45. Dicky94 says:

If they can just give Strome two wingers that can play hockey I’ll be happy.

    leadfarmer:

Lucic (or any other slow train) in OT = bad. Speed and quick transitions = Good

  47. Ben says:

Credit: really nice takeaway by Russell to gain possession for the goal.

  48. OriginalPouzar says:

That game got more entertaining period after period.

    Fun game to watch.

Big to get that 2nd point before the SO. ROWs could come in to play for this team.

    Ok

  51. who says:

Was it just me or was Hall throwing a tantrum right in front of Hirscheir on the way back to the bench after the failed 2 on 1.
Not cool. Especially when you are doing it to an eighteen year old rookie. Everybody in the rink knows he should have shot it including the kid himself.
Hope I’m wrong but that’s what it looked like to me.

Hall was a decent to outstanding player who fell down a lot/refused to stand up for himself(got hit endlessly) and in the end couldn’t stand the idea of another player taking over what he thought was HIS team.

I’d have never traded Hall myself. Like every other Oiler fan in the known universe.

  54. hunter1909 says:

    At least they won.

The New! Improved! Lowetide is now 1-0-0

  55. Bling says:

Nugent-Hopkins with some sick moves in OT. More please!!! What a player.

Drai/McDavid are just lethal 3 on 3, it’s completely absurd.

I don’t think even the biggest Hall supporters have ever accused him of being the most likeable of players based on his in game emotions.

I’m sure the next team that signs him for 7 years will love him though.

It won’t be jersey after another losing season.

  57. Hardy_Astrom says:

Resiliency, fortitude, perseverance. Not the best game, but I will take going to OT on the road 100% of the time with McD and Drai on the team. Jesus.

Anyone else see Nuge looking like Gretz in OT? He almost did it by himself a couple of times. Feels good to get 2 in a row.

  58. Hardy_Astrom says:

    Bling:
Nugent-Hopkins with some sick moves in OT. More please!!! What a player.

You beat me to it. RNH gets a challenge from coach for more offense… RNH: “hold my orange pop; watch this”.

  59. Westchester Oil says:

At the game tonight. A couple observations:

    – the Oil slept thru the first 10 minutes but put in a pretty solid effort thereafter (although late in the third it looked like they were playing for the OT)
    – the OT was real and it was spectacular
    – RNH impressed me tonight
    – Darnell skated miles
    – this was my first visit to the Prudential Center; not sure what the announced crowd was but it looked like 10% of the seats were empty; the bathroom lines moved way faster than Rexall; I’ve never seen a crowd react so violently after a botched icing call; the fans had a fair number of ‘Rangers suck’ chants but they don’t hate the Rangers near as much as Islander fans do

  60. jimmers2 says:

Ugly start but great resilience. That was a huge game for so early in the year. Oil now four points out of holding the wildcard spot. Lots of teams to pass but the path suddenly seems feasible.

  61. DBO says:

    Pouzar,

The Defiant Ones on HBO is great.

5v5 I hope they move Draisatl with Strome and put Caggiula up with McDavid or call up Puljujarvi or Rattie to play with him.

Spread it out. That line 5v5 is not getting it done.

  62. flyfish1168 says:

    Dicky94:
If they can just give Strome two wingers that can play hockey I’ll be happy.

They ‘re down on the farm. I would like to see Gambardella and Rattie come up. Gambardella is fast, can play center and hard on the forecheck and Rattie has a good shot. Both players are faster than Jokinen.

  63. AntsOfTheSky says:

JFK to 9/11: Everything is a Rich Man’s Trick is one of, if not the best documentary I’ve ever watched in my life. Politics, war, history, it has it all. It’s fairly long and can be tough to get into, but I highly recommend it!

Hall haters are going to irrationally jump all over that one. Doesn’t help that he was outshone by a ficus tonight.

  71. OriginalPouzar says:

    OriginalPouzar:
So, Slep’s injury was a groin thing.

Lets hope he’s 100% as groin injuries have a tendency to re-occur.

  72. Kinger_Oil.redux says:

    – Hey the Oil are 3 points out of 7th place, with Vegas whose going to fall apart, and Vancouver who won’t last and the Peg who are playing over their heads as well…

    – Sky isn’t falling, even though Lowetide is evolving

    – We will be fine, then playoffs: Chia said as much in an interview this summer: “Basically there are two seasons. You need to get through the first to get into the second, then you start again”

  73. OriginalPouzar says:

Kudos to Russell for some nice plays in OT – a material part of the winning goal.

  74. Melman says:

Hands up – who remembers the Draisaitl v. Bennett debate?

  75. Bling says:

Chachi: Hall haters are going to irrationally jump all over that one. Doesn’t help that he was outshone by a ficus tonight.

I think it is possible to think that Hall is a tremendous hockey player AND that his behaviour in that particular circumstance was out of line.

Did McDavid ever pout like that when Maroon or KY missed a golden opportunity?

Even if you don’t believe a reaction like that is a big deal, you can be sure his teammates took note.

Chachi: Hall haters are going to irrationally jump all over that one. Doesn’t help that he was outshone by a ficus tonight.

What exactly is irrational about commenting on something we have seen Hall do up close for 6 years?

The reason he was never made captain.

Nico’s teamates had to go out of their way to comfort him. What do they think of Hall right now?

Its not okay to comment on things we don’t know and yet we see them on the ice.

Great talent, moderate production, shit personality.

What we don’t know, is if the interactions-to-date between Nico and Hall made Nico feel like he had to pass.

    What a loser.

  83. Kinger_Oil.redux says:

I thought Hall was mad at himself?

    – Yeah, my take was Hall was saying: “look I know you thought you should pass to me to score on my old team, but you just bury that f$cking puck next time ok”

    – And I was the the first person on this blog to say that Hall had to go!

  84. Johnny Eyetest says:

Thing is, team chemistry doesn’t matter anyway, so it’s a moot point.

  85. Johnny Eyetest says:

Johnny skid: that how i saw it as well.

You would think he wouldn’t be making a spectacle out of his rookie, 18 yr old teamate.

I’m thinking he was mad for putting that pass on his tape.

Late to this one but as a fellow sports fan I thoroughly recommend Icarus. It’s on Netflix. Enthralling.

  89. Johnny Eyetest says:

May as well pile on while the getting is good….

    Head-to-head this season:
    Hall 1G 0A -3 embarrased a teamate
Lucic 2G 1A +3 removed the Devils most intimidating player out of their lineup

Throw in one more Apple for Hall over the last two seasons head to head.

Hall corsi’ed the hell out of him though, so there’s that.

Don’t know if you watched the latest Ken Burns epic on Vietnam,
It was like a book I couldn’t put down.
On the lighter side, Mike Judge Presents ( King of The Hill, Beavis & Butthead)
Tales from the Tour Bus has been most enjoyable.
Fun bit of Sex, Drugs, Rock n’ Roll history.
You don’t need to be a Country fan to appreciate Wille Nelson, Waylon Jennings or The Killer!

In hindsight maybe but groins are funny one day it deals good then you step onto the ice & twist the wrong way then pop its done again.
You can understand why he wanted to play, finally gets an opportunity in the top 6, potts a beauty.

    A damn shame.

  103. OmJo says:

    AntsOfTheSky,

Watched the first hour. The thing with these kind of documentaries is I like to research into the claims the narrator makes while watching. Too tired to do that. Really wish people would cite stuff in the description of videos, oh well.

I don’t want to turn the comment section into a political thing, it gets heated enough talking about Hall/Eberle/Strome/Russell/Lucic lol, but he kind of lost me when he portrayed the USSR as enemies of the elite. Counter Intelligence has the same hint of leftist bias. And he refuses to mentioned one of the biggest players in the whole game. I’ll leave it at that though.

You can understand why he wanted to play, finally gets an opportunity in the top 6, potts a beauty.
    Such a shame

Fair enough but the verabal earlier in the day that “he’s going to give is a shot” sure didn’t provide confidence that he was 100% and I expressed concern re: re-injury earlier in the thread.

He still made a number of errant passes at the blue line and in the neutral zone, however, generally, he was super engaged – driving, skating and anticipating without the puck creating turnovers and making plays.

The Milan Lucic I saw in the 3rd period last night is a valuable player – unfortunately, I haven’t seen much of the player over his first 100 or so games as an Oiler.

    who,

The funny thing is passing it back to Hall was the correct play. Hall should know passing the net removes him from the play. If the young lad did shoot the puck there is a good chance the rebound would go right to where Hall should have been. The bit of unhappiness displayed by Hall after is expected, he was no different when he played here.

  112. Tapdog says:

    JimmyV1965,

Also curious to know what type of interaction there was between Driasaitl and Nurse? I caught the big hug between McDavid and Dri but did not seen any Nurse interaction.

Well, Nurse wasn’t on the ice so it seems to me like you are looking for a story here when there isn’t any – fair?

  115. Tapdog says:

    OriginalPouzar,

True your observation skills are strong, Nurse was not on the ice for the goal.
There was a celebration after though….. All I dId was ask if anyone noticed any interaction between the two so please do not make my question into something I did not specify.
I am sure if a regular poster posed this question your response would have been different? If not then my apologies.

The not funny at all thing is to see worthless and ungrateful Edmonton fans jump on Hall every chance they get demonstrates the narrowness and withering of their miserable souls.

Hall was a great player for the Oilers who left everything on the ice, by all accounts liked by his teammates, and yet every chance the people of Edmonton get, they look to take him down with absurd character assassinations.

I would say you should be ashamed of yourself, but that requires integrity in the first place.

  117. OmJo says:

    OriginalPouzar,

I think best case scenario right now is Slepyshev gave it a few shifts, didn’t feel too good, and they sat him the rest of the game. So he didn’t re-injury himself, or aggravate the injury any worse than it was.

    A man can dream.

  118. Tapdog says:

    Cassandra,

I said nothing of Hall not being a great Oiler nor did I say anything improper. In saying he was no different here is true. He wears his heart on his sleeve and good or bad he shows his emotion, this is what makes Hall……..Hall.
    Now shall we discuss integrity?

I can’t seem to find a video of the 2v1 let alone what happened afterwards. Man does Oiler highlight coverage suck for the most part. 90 second videos to show the whole game? Laughable.

Hall is an emotional player. If that play works, they win the game and break their slump. We don’t know what was said to Hischier. I can’t see the body language to make any further assumptions, but getting emotional ≠ evidence of a locker room cancer.

People worrying about Lucic (in the short term at least) need to focus elsewhere. No way can we survive Pak, Jokinen, Letestu playing any significant minutes 5 on 5 for this team. What’s more disturbing to me is that TMc loves him some Pak and Testtube so I don’t see this changing any time soon.

I brought up the incident so I guess I will respond. Never bought into the cancer in the locker room narrative. I don’t think I have ever questioned his character on this blog Loved watching him play for the Oilers and never questioned his talent or his effort. Just because I thought the trade was a good hockey trade for both teams does not mean I hate Taylor Hall.
But for some reason I found that little incident last night disturbing. It shows a lack of leadership, IN THAT INSTANCE, by a veteran player. You would think you might want to build up the confidence of a skilled, eighteen year old player, rather than tear it down. You certainly don’t want to embarrass him in front of his team mates and a rink full of people.
Maybe I misread the situation, but it didn’t sit right with me.

    Letestu played 3:40 5 on 5.
    Malone just over 4 minutes.
    Pak played 9:55

In tight games, TMac basically roles his lines so that the 4th and 3rd line TOI together get about the same amount of ice time as the top line

And he is running a top 4 again with Nurse/Larsson, Klefbom/Benning with Russell and Gryba playing 3rd pairing minutes. I think most fans believe this makes most sense here.

    Jesus.

I come here to read things about the Oilers that are generally far smarter than I am able to generate with my own brain. I, in turn, tell these things to my wife, who thinks I am a Hockey God.

I support any new Lowetide blog that thematizes conversations if it has the enviable outcome of sequestering the Hall-Larsson debate and the WhatIsSaysAboutYouAsAPerson talk to some corner of the internet where time has collapsed on in itself and I never have to see it again.

Our third line last night had Jokinen and Pak flanking Strome – that line looks much better if its Caggulia and Slepyshev flanking Strome but they are injured and, as with every other team, injuries will tax depth.

I would put our 3rd/4th line depth issues due to injuries as fairly low on the worry list.

With Drake and Slep healthy, I like our 4 lines.

That TOI is a function of the coach adapting to the game.

Slep got hurt so Kassian moved up to take his spot on 2RW and then the coach provided accountability and Letestu didn’t see the ice again after his weak play on the Devils’ second goal (and Malone was sat as a function of the coach rolling three lines).

He looks confident out there and, last night, for the first time, I saw chemistry between Nuge and Lucic – it was a function of Lucic’s play away from the puck, anticipating the play and skating hard to the right places at the right times, even before the plays were materializing.

It was a great hockey IQ 2nd half of the game by Lucic last night (except for his bad passes at the blueline and in the neutral zone).

  135. Dicky94 says:

    Pouzar,

I’m with you 100% on this. If they can’t find an upgrade on Pak and JJ they will continue to struggle to win games. Strome’s passes are being wasted on guys who look like they’re carrying fly swatters for sticks. Give Strome some skill on that 3rd line and we might have something. I like Letestu and Malone on the 4th line.

We have the upgrades – Caggulia and Slepyshev would be perfect wingers for Strome on the 3rd line.

We just need those two to get, and stay, healthy.

  138. Evilas says:

    OriginalPouzar,

Agreed, Strome needs speed and skill on his line. Unfortunately, Cags and Slept have not been very durable this year and this has had a significant impact on the lack of depth scoring and wins…. I think Malone has shown to be an effective 4th liner and PKer. He might cash a few chances in the next couple of weeks.
