G17 2017-18: Oilers at Capitals

The mannish boy became manna from heaven yesterday, as Jesse Puljujarvi fit like a glove on to the Nuge line at Madison Square Garden. Scoring early and looking like he could do it again and again, he was fast, responsible and belonged. You can get a lot out of a crappy season if enough questions get answered.

THE ATHLETIC!

The special Lowetide offer is here. Among the items on the menu today are:

Great feedback so far, very much appreciated.

 PIKES PEAK, YEAR OVER YEAR

  • Oilers in November 2015: 2-4-0, goal differential -4
  • Oilers in November 2016: 2-3-1, goal differential -4
  • Oilers in November 2017: 3-3-0, goal differential -2

The Oilers 2017-18 team remains the most successful of the Todd McLellan era but it’s close. In 2015-16, Edmonton lost 4-3 in overtime to Marian Hossa and the Chicago Blackhawks. Last season it was a 3-1 loss to the Rangers.

AFTER 16, YEAR OVER YEAR

  • Oilers 15-16: 6-10-0, goal differential -7
  • Oilers 16-17: 9-6-1, goal differential +4
  • Oilers 17-18: 6-9-1, goal differential -13

November (3-3-0) is better than October (3-6-1) but both records represent a team on the outside of the playoffs looking in. G17 was a 4-1 loss to Arizona in 2015-16, last season a 4-1 loss to Anaheim. A win yesterday would have this team at 7-8-1, fairly close to .500 and a lot of ground made up in November. As it is, the club has to win today and against Vegas in order to arrive at 8-9-1 before the St. Louis game. This team badly needs a winning streak.

WHAT TO EXPECT FROM NOVEMBER

  • At home to: Pittsburgh, New Jersey, Detroit (Expected: 2-1-0) (Actual 1-2-0)
  • On the road to: NYI, New Jersey, NYR, Washington (Expected: 1-2-1) (Actual: 2-1-0)
  • At home to: Vegas, St. Louis (Expected 1-1-0) (Actual: 0-0-0)
  • On the road to: Dallas, St. Louis, Detroit, Buffalo, Boston (Expected 2-2-1) (Actual 0-0-0)
  • At home to: Arizona, Toronto (Expected 1-1-0) (Actual 0-0-0)
  • Overall expected result: 7-7-2, 16 points in 16 games
  • Current results: 3-3-0, six points in six games

So far, my estimates are marching along nicely with the record of the team, although the club is doing better than anticipated on the road. If the Oilers win today, this going 3-1-0 on the road trip, it will mark the most successful portion of the season to date. The schedule remains a bear, important Edmonton remains somewhere near the race through end December when the road gets easier.

DEFENSE

  • Russell-Gryba were solid in possession, going 15-7 including 8-0 with the Nuge line. Went 12-3 against Kreider-Buchnevich-Grabner line. This paring was solid and played five minutes against a pretty damned good line. Both men get caved online, the things I value suggest they played well.
  • Nurse-Larsson went 13-11 together, 1-0 in GF. Went 4-7 against Nash-Hayes-Zuccarello, 5-2 against Miller-Desharnais-Vesey. This pairing is finding their way, 7-7-6 (OZ-NZ-DZ) in faceoffs.
  • Klefbom-Benning went 11-14 together, 0-1 GA (all of this 5×5) and of course Oscar was a deer in the headlights on a couple of goals. 6-5-6 in faceoffs, 4-6 against Nash-Hayes-Zucarello, 7-8 with the McDavid line.
  • If you’ve come here hoping for a searing take on Klefbom, you’re going to be disappointed. He’s struggling, and defensive coverage is not his forte. Klefbom can do a lot of things and he is a valuable player with a fantastic contract. Trading him would be shortsighted in the highest. This is your future, that’s a fact.
  • Cam Talbot stopped 30 of 33, .909 and at 5×5, 26 of 27, .963. He’s back, the Oilers need to score more goals and give him better support.
  • Natural Stat Trick and NHL.com.

FORWARDS LAST NIGHT

  • Malone-Letestu-Kassian went 4-2 in limited minutes. Kassian is a dentist’s dream.
  • Lucic-Nuge-Puljujarvi were fantastic, just an amazing afternoon. That JP recall could have a gigantic impact on the season if the young man shoots the puck on net five times a game. I thought he was fast, strong and played an intelligent two-way game.
  • Maroon-McDavid-Draisaitl had some things going on but couldn’t find clean air in the third period. Todd McLellan is taking a lot of heat now in keeping this line together, it may mean the Finn makes an appearance with the top group before the end of the month.
  • Jokinen-Strome-Pakarinen are a porridge line, spending most of the game on the way to the play.

All manner of possibles for Chiarelli to view in that game, although Alex Petrovic didn’t play for the Panthers last night. I’d look for a fast scoring right-wing who doesn’t cost the moon as the most obvious option and that may mean the Devils are the team PC was viewing. The Devils need defensemen and the Oilers will have an extra lefty when Andrej Sekera returns (maybe December?) to regular action.

JESSE PULJUJARVI

I’ve mentioned this a few times but the Puljujarvi arrival (if it turns out) could be a turning point for the organization. I’m not sure they’ll make the playoffs this season but solving RW scoring is a big part of what’s ailing this hockey team. If JP scores 20 this season on a Nuge line, the long list of things that keep the Edmonton Oilers from balance will have one fewer major items to solve next summer. It would be a gigantic damned deal.

I think Holtby felt contact and went down, didn’t seem like much at all.

  2. OriginalPouzar says:

This is the best McDavid has skated and the best he’s looked since game 1.

  3. Munny says:

    OriginalPouzar,

    Skate on skate

  4. Munny says:

    Huge save by Broissoit there

  5. OriginalPouzar says:

Come on Pak – shoot that puck off the pads and cause a rebound.

  6. russ99 says:

Hope they show that ridiculous incidental call to the replay officials the next time Kesler mugs our goalie with no call.

  7. OriginalPouzar says:

    Munny:
    OriginalPouzar,

    Skate on skate

Didn’t look like it to me but I must be missing it – it was a foot and a half outside the cease.

  8. Gerta Rauss says:

I thought Holtby sold that and the call went his way

    Onward and upward

  9. OriginalPouzar says:

McDavid now taking a shift on the 4th line.

  10. OmJo says:

    Woodguy v2.0,

Thank you, I’ll check those out next time besides just NHL.com

Still have a lot to learn about that kind of stuff.

  11. OriginalPouzar says:

    Sensational defensive play by Pak.

  12. Lowetide says:

Great defensive play by Pakarinen there. Lordy.

  13. OriginalPouzar says:

Great shift by Strome, Maroon and Khaira – not sure how Maroon got on that line – maybe to give Connor a break – he’s taken a good 6 extra shifts.

  14. OmJo says:

    OriginalPouzar:
McDavid now taking a shift on the 4th line.

What a time to be alive.

  15. Jaxon says:

Pakarinen followed the defensive play with a great effort to keep it going at the other end before getting off safely. Great shift.

  16. Munny says:

This team has been much better this whole road trip, whatever the outcome.

  17. OriginalPouzar says:

McDavid mugged, obvious hold, no call – as per usual.

  18. Munny says:

    Jaxon,

Yup, super smart to peel off to the bench for Maroon after a superhuman effort.

  19. OriginalPouzar says:

Nice work by Jesse on the boards to get that puck out.

  20. leadfarmer says:

“He who could not be given away” pushing guys over

  21. Jaxon says:

The great thing about Pakarinen and Malone is that they never let the opposition get a free ride. They hit everything that moves, try to get the puck down the ice and get off for the skill players. They know their role.

  22. OriginalPouzar says:

Looking for an Oiler PP pretty soon.

  23. Evilas says:

Nothing but muffins from the point in this game, this needs to improve.

  24. Munny says:

    That mortgage ad is madness…

  25. OriginalPouzar says:

    Evilas:
Nothing but muffins from the point in this game, this needs to improve.

What about the one that ended up in the net?

  26. Captain Smarmy says:

I’ve only seen the box score. Is this game as putrid as the box score implies?

  27. leadfarmer says:

Last year playoffs, McDavid gets hard matched, Draisatl gets his own line to get a favorable matchup. This year we just keep throwing them out together

  28. leadfarmer says:

    Captain Smarmy:
I’ve only seen the box score. Is this game as putrid as the box score implies?

It’s like watching the Devils play the Wild 5 years ago

  29. OriginalPouzar says:

McDavid now taking a shift on the 2nd line with Lucic and Puljijarvi.

  30. Munny says:

    Captain Smarmy,

Not at all… hard-skating, hard-checking affair with chances both ways.

  31. OriginalPouzar says:

OMG – first line so close multiple times.

  32. Munny says:

    Oh muh Gord Maroon

  33. leadfarmer says:

3 g lead. Most dangerous lead in hockey. Devils come back from 3 down to be up 5-4. In one of those games that a team can actually score

  34. OriginalPouzar says:

Very entertaining period – a very competitive hockey game.

For their 3rd game in 4 days on the road, the boys are looking very good.

Quick and full effort from the tender out.

Very easily could be up a couple.

Looking forward to more of the same in the third period – along with a couple of goals.

  35. godot10 says:

    leadfarmer:
Last year playoffs, McDavid gets hard matched, Draisatl gets his own line to get a favorable matchup. This year we just keep throwing them out together

Draisaitl got Getzlaf, the tougher matchup. McDavid got Kesler.

  36. OriginalPouzar says:

Benson with 3 assists through 2 periods of play – Giants are up big, 8-1.

All three of Benson’s assists have been on the PP – would we prefer that he produces at even strength?

  37. Crazy Pedestrian says:

    OriginalPouzar:
McDavid now taking a shift on the 2nd line with Lucic and Puljijarvi.

Wow… it seems my “throw McDavid out on the other lines at random to mess with the opposition” comment I made last week was somehow heard…
    creepy…
    Hey let’s try this:
Ehem… I THINK THEY SHOULD SPLIT UP MCDAVID AND DRAI ONTO SEPARATE LINES ALL GAME LONG AND ATTEMPT TO SPREAD THE SCORING!

    let’s see what happens…

  38. GMB3 says:

godot10: Draisaitl got Getzlaf, the tougher matchup.McDavid got Kesler.

Kesler is the tougher match up. That line is tough to play against, solid defensively

  39. Pouzar says:

Best 2 periods of hockey I’ve seen from this team in a long long time.

    #FreeKhaira

  40. Evilas says:

    OriginalPouzar,

Timing is everything, isn’t it? I was going to add that non-goal in the comment, but this phone is working against me, lol.

  41. OriginalPouzar says:

    Captain Smarmy:
I’ve only seen the box score. Is this game as putrid as the box score implies?

Not at all – A very entertaining and competitive game.

I am thoroughly enjoying watching these two teams play.

  42. Pouzar says:

    Munny:
    That mortgage ad is madness…

    Why is that?

  43. russ99 says:

Man, what do these guys need to do to score those goals in the crease?

It has to go our way at some point, right?

  44. Pouzar says:

Montreal got rid of Mark Streit in a nanosecond when they realized he was toast.

    Oilers…your move.

  45. fishman says:

    OriginalPouzar:
Benson with 3 assists through 2 periods of play – Giants are up big, 8-1.

All three of Benson’s assists have been on the PP – would we prefer that he produces at even strength?

I think we should be real happy he is posting offence regardless the situation. Be great to see him 1.5 to 2 pts per game this season. He has lots of lost time to make up.

  46. Pouzar says:

    Nurse:

    16-4

    Stud.

  47. OriginalPouzar says:

fishman: I think we should be real happy he is posting offence regardless the situation. Be great to see him 1.5 to 2 pts per game this season. He has lots of lost time to make up.

I don’t think him posting offence when in the lineup was ever a concern, was it?

    It certainty wasn’t for me.

To me, the only real concern is staying healthy – if healthy, this is an elite prospect.

I expect multiple points every game he plays.

  48. leadfarmer says:

So what happens next week with Jokinen:
    A) gets trade for future considerations
    B) on waivers
    C) he finally finished skating off the ice in New York and will rejoin the team in their travels

  49. fishman says:

OriginalPouzar: I don’t think him posting offence when in the lineup was ever a concern, was it?

    It certainty wasn’t for me.

To me, the only real concern is staying healthy – if healthy, this is an elite prospect.

I strongly support this comment!!!! Lets hope he doesn’t miss another game this season!

  50. fishman says:

    leadfarmer,

Guessing healthy scratch until someone gets hurt. I don’t think they will send him down but who knows???

  51. Lowetide says:

    Khaira scored.

  52. fishman says:

    Jujar!

  53. Gerta Rauss says:

JJ….they’re not calling that one back!!!

  54. OriginalPouzar says:

Great goal by the third line.

Great work by each of Strome, Pak and Khaira.

  55. Munny says:

    Ha! Called it.

  56. Evilas says:

    Evilas,

    Yesssssss!!!!!!

  57. Oil2Oilers says:

JJ was full value for that all night

  58. OriginalPouzar says:

I’d have no issue with Jokinen playing for Brad Malone.

Brad is barely playing and, when he is playing, he’s doing very little except taking penalties.

  59. Fgary says:

    juuuuuuuuujhar!!!!!!!

  60. fishman says:

Pak did the hard work on that one. Bottom 6 goal what a concept!

  61. OriginalPouzar says:

McDavid was lucky there – that was a poor and weak play in the defensive zone (in the slot, in the 3rd period with a one goal lead).

  62. OriginalPouzar says:

Jesus Malone, you get a shift and give the puck away at the blueline?

    Unacceptable.

  63. fishman says:

    Munny:
    Ha! Called it.

Quick by a lottery ticket while you are on a hot streak!

  64. OriginalPouzar says:

    Great goal by the Caps!

Third line gives it right back.

  65. Fgary says:

    I take it back

  66. fishman says:

Yikes Jujhar the goat on that one.

  67. leadfarmer says:

Where did Benning and Klefbom go on that goal

  68. StixMalone says:

Guy hasn’t scored in 26 games but ….Oilers are in town

  69. OmJo says:

New Jersey and Chicago forgot how to play defence tonight.

  70. fishman says:

Need first line to win this one. Been a while since they scored even strength goal

  71. Lucinius says:

Haven’t watched a lot of games this year (this is the first game of the last 14 I’ve been able to catch), and I’ve only caught a bit of the third (started watching shortly after the Oilers goal). Work has been a bitch.

Seems like I haven’t exactly missed much this season.

  72. Evilas says:

Khaira needs to be diving to block those passes, these bottom 6 guys cannot be giving the opponent free shots on net like that. I wonder if he is done for the night after that….

  73. Evilas says:

    Okay good

  74. Munny says:

I just wanna say that Looch has had a real solid game to this point.

  75. leadfarmer says:

Caps need to change their name to the Saints

  76. Munny says:

Who would you rather fight… Nurse or Khaira?

  77. leadfarmer says:

    Munny:
I just wanna say that Looch has had a real solid game to this point.

“He who could not be given away” does not do compliments

  78. Gerta Rauss says:

    Munny:
I just wanna say that Looch has had a real solid game to this point.

    yes

  79. OriginalPouzar says:

2nd line with a great shift followed by the 3rd line with a nice shift followed by the 1st line with a nice shift.

Keep plugging away guys – get that goal.

  80. OriginalPouzar says:

A PP would sure be nice…..

  81. Evilas says:

    Lemme guess penalty for Maroon….

  82. OriginalPouzar says:

    Lucinius:

You haven’t enjoyed watching this hockey game? Its been highly competitive in my opinion.

  83. Clay says:

    OmJo:
New Jersey and Chicago forgot how to play defence tonight.

It’s all happening, that’s for sure. What a game.

  84. fishman says:

Hauling Conner down from behind now considered a good hockey play????

  85. Munny says:

If they had called that puck over the glass a penalty I was going to go full GMoney…

and you should never go FULL GMoney.

  86. OriginalPouzar says:

Very disciplined by the Caps not committing a single infraction tonight – no holds or interference, no slashes, nothing….

  87. Evilas says:

What is the actual rule on delay of game? JP didn’t even shoot that, did he? Even if it hit the glass, that was more of a deflection wasn’t it?

  88. Lucinius says:

OriginalPouzar: You haven’t enjoyed watching this hockey game? Its been highly competitive in my opinion.

Didn’t say that. Just, given our.. record, I’d have to say I didn’t exactly miss a great team to watch in the 12 or so games I missed.

This period hasn’t been bad at all. Not great, mind you. Seeing a lot of small problems from certain players, but nothing too serious (other than Khaira’s brain fart on the goal against).

How much did the Oilers suck while I wasn’t able to watch? The record deserved?

  89. fishman says:

Both goalies playing well but Holtby really strong.

  90. Munny says:

    OriginalPouzar:
Very disciplined by the Caps not committing a single infraction tonight – no holds or interference, no slashes, nothing….

lol, I hope that was sarcasm…

  91. fishman says:

Well 5 points on the trip (so far!)

  92. Gerta Rauss says:

    I’ll take that

I like our chances in OT

  93. OriginalPouzar says:

Great effort tonight boys – great value for that point.

Now, lets get the second point.

  94. fishman says:

    97/ 29 magic for 3 rd time????

  95. leadfarmer says:

    Cmon MacT call a timeout.

  96. leadfarmer says:

wtffffff. That’s the same thing Orlov just did!!!!

  97. Munny says:

Great observation by Remenda on the penalty call

  98. StixMalone says:

    Shit call

  99. Crazy Pedestrian says:

Refs trying real hard to fix this game…

  100. OriginalPouzar says:

Great call – Caps haven’t committed any similar infractions, of course.

  101. Lucinius says:

I would have zero issues with the RNH penalty.. if the refs actually called that all the time. It is a penalty. That they missed about 11 times in just what I’ve seen tonight.

  102. OriginalPouzar says:

Well, we can’t get a ROW but we can still come away with 2 points which is the most important thing.

  103. jake70 says:

Connor should have let that rip before he lost control.

  104. Crazy Pedestrian says:

Man… those wobbly puck bounces between mcd and Drai there was rediculous…

  105. OriginalPouzar says:

Not sure I’m all that confident with LB in the net for the SO but we’ll see.

  106. Munny says:

Oshie is so killer on shootouts

  107. AntsOfTheSky says:

Hahahahahahaha one of the most bush league calls I’ve ever seen. 10 seconds left in OT and that gets called? Wow.

  108. Munny says:

First Eberle free shootout in aeons…

  109. Lucinius says:

Post by Drai.. and McDavid misses the net.

    Heh.

  110. Crazy Pedestrian says:

    Screw these shit refs…

  111. Munny says:

Oh well… they were definitely full value for the point, a damn good game and good road trip, all-in-all.

  112. fishman says:

#55. Really???? LB was in tough as Caps have lots of skilled shooters. Too bad as we deserved the 2 nd point. Man NHL reffing is frustrating!

  113. LadiesloveSmid says:

A point in WSH is good, I guess.

    Sad season

  114. AntsOfTheSky says:

Letestu over Nuge in the shootout? Seems odd, does he have better career numbers than Nuge in the SO?

  115. Fgary says:

Is it just me or do you give your 2nd leading scorer a shot…..

  116. Woodguy v2.0 says:

Not a bad result at all and Pouzar’s boy had a good game and JJ earns a spot.

JJ and JP make the team bigger and faster and in JP’s case, more skilled.

    That’s good.

  117. Crazy Pedestrian says:

    OriginalPouzar:
Great call – Caps haven’t committed any similar infractions, of course.

This is one of those games that reaaally irk me to the core… refs picked a side… and they weren’t even suttle about it…

  118. Lucinius says:

So, Oilers on pace for 68 points and a -63 goal differential. Wow. So, not a great start in the least. They better pick it up in a hurry if they want to make the playoffs.

  119. OriginalPouzar says:

    AntsOfTheSky:
Letestu over Nuge in the shootout?Seems odd, does he have better career numbers than Nuge in the SO?

Yes, Letestu is actually in the top 30 or so all time in SO percentage.

  120. thehop says:

    AntsOfTheSky,

Ya I don’t get it either….if you are in it to win you don’t put Letestu out to tie it in a shootout.

    Face off in OT? Sure.

But that pretty much sums up his effectiveness in my eyes.

    Good call Coach…..not!

  121. fishman says:

    That’s good.

You bet. If Cags and Sleppy can ever get healthy it really changes the complexion of this team. More skill and more speed.

  122. Munny says:

Orlov could have been a star last time we played. His game has come a long long way. Heckuva player now.

  123. texmex says:

7 goals scored in 4+ game road trip??

Turn out the lights, the party’s over

    That’s good.

    By JJ you mean????

    🙂

I am boycotting any game Jussi Jokinen plays going forward.
He is done like Sunday Dinner.

They worked thier butts off, great effort, shame not to get the win.

    LB gaining confidence

Back to preseason – JJ looked great. Jessie looked good

Big Rig Will be exhausted, he was all in this fame.

  127. SayItAin'tSo, Gretz, SayItAin'tSo! says:

Ok so the skills comp didn’t turn out right but this was an excellent effort.

Rolled four lines in a tight 3rd period on the second of a back to back and 3rd in 4 nights.

    Shitty ice in OT

NaturalStatTrick tells me they caved the Caps from the 2nd period onward.

    Good arrows all around.

Oilers are now dead last in the league in penalties drawn. A full 27 back of the league leader. Throw in that fun one at the end of OT and we have a minor conspiracy theory on our hands.

Washington is setup to play like Western Conference teams. Bodes well for the future.

Lots of positives tonight, need to take some of that rawness (Lucic, Maroon I’m looking at you) and channel it into the Tuesday night game.

Vegas does not have Braden Holtby in net to bail them out.

  128. Pouzar says:

Oilers looked like an NHL team tonight. Get rid of Letestu and we are cooking with gas….well…almost.

This may come as a shock but disagreeing with a choice doesn’t necessarily make it a bad choice. How many Oiler shoot-out practices have you watched compared to TMac?

Not sure about Letestu’s career but he had 4 goals on 9 attempts last season. Which was the 4th most goals in the NHL.

    EDIT:
    https://www.sportingcharts.com/stats/nhl/all-time/career-shootout-percentage-active/

31st of active players with 15 goals on 36 attempts (of players with 10 or more shootout attempts.

Oshie is amazing with 39 goals on 71 attempts.

Pirri should almost just make a team to sit on the bench and come in for a possible shootout with 10 goals on 18 attempts. Then again, you’re not trying to build a regular season champ but a Stanley Cup champ, so he’d only help in getting a playoff position, not winning playoff games.

EDIT #2: Old stats, Letestu was still with CBJ. Gagner was still in EDM.

    AntsOfTheSky,

Ya I don’t get it either….if you are in it to win you don’t put Letestu out to tie it in a shootout.

    Face off in OT? Sure.

But that pretty much sums up his effectiveness in my eyes.

    Good call Coach…..not!

Letestu is one of the best SO players in the NHL:

    https://www.sportingcharts.com/stats/nhl/all-time/career-shootout-percentage-active/

Actually, i think that link is a bit out-dated but Letestu was good on the SO last year as well relative to the rest of the team (I think).

So the Oilers managed 5 of 8 possible points on a road trip against 4 good teams, without ever scoring more than two goals in regulation time.

    Impressive, while also depressing.

That would be an unbelievable regression…

    Munny,

Quite a few actually. I live in Leduc and the team uses the local rink as a practice facility often. Yes I haven’t seen as many as the coach but I still think it was a poor choice and I’m genuinely curious about the shootout stat.

While the season hasn’t gone like any Oiler fan has wanted, there are three pluses right now that could/should be HUGE for the future:

    1) Darnell Nurse – We were all hoping that he’d build on last year’s season and take another step forward but I’m not sure that anyone expected him to take this large of a step. He is tireless out there and is making good decisions and good plays consistantly. I don’t think he’ll ever have the offence to be a true #1 d-man but he can be a great complimentary guy on a top pairing

    2) Jesse Puljijarvi – I know its only been two games and the key is consistency but I think we are starting to see the player we drafted. I don’t think he’ll ever be a huge point producer but this is a legit top 6 forward who is going to excel in all zones – he’s big, fast, skilled and smart out there. Lets not forget, he doesn’t turn 20 until May

    3) Ryan Nugent-Hopkins – He is driving that 2nd line – while its not an elite scoring line, he is creating offence like he hasn’t since his first few years and is a very material player. I’d like to see him get a PP push.

Drake is slatted to start skating with the team this week – I’m not sure if he’ll play Tuesday but I don’t think he’s far off.

Slep was placed on the IR so he’s not eligible for 10 day from that date which probably takes us to the end of next week, at the earliest. Don’t know if he’s days away or a month – groins are tricky and I’m frustrated with the organization for letting him/forcing him to play that last game. They knew it wasn’t 100% and re-injury was a significant risk.

  145. OriginalPouzar says:

I really like our healthy lineup up front – just not sure if we’ll ever be fully healthy to see the following:

    Maroon/McDavid/Drai
    Lucic/Nuge/Puljijariv
    Drake/Stome/Slepyshev
    Khira/Letestu/Kassian

    Nurse/Larsson

    Sekera/Russell

Attended the game tonight – sat at pretty much ice level in the Oilers attacking zone … some observations:
    – Oilers D and neutral zone coverage was very good tonight … pretty much shut down Ovi and Backstrom all game
    – the caps goal was just a nice play by them, finished off by a perfect shot
    – Khaira and Jesse were flying tonight. Khaira was very good in fact
    – Leon was terrible tonight, pretty much coughed the puck up every time it came near him
    – Connor and Nuge were visibly frustrated with the clutching and grabbing
    – capital one center is a great place to catch a game; great downtown location close to everything …:my wife and I took a 15 min walk to the White House after the game. Attendance at the game was terrible and their fans were pretty quiet but tickets were a fantastic price. No line ups for the washroom or the beer stand … definitely recommend folks come here to catch a game and enjoy the sites and the fantastic cuisine!

Only caught the first period and then had to go to my old man soccer game.

JJ, Jesse, Nuge and of course Nurse looked good to my eye.

By the comments it sounds like that continued.

    Glad we got a point.

Hopefully we don’t take vegas lightly and start a winning streak.

Nice game. While McL can be frustrating, I think the hard push to force them to play the system will pay off later in the season. They are a really strong team 5v5 for about 99% of many games. We haven’t seen that in years, even better than last other than the whole scoring thing, but those HDSC will cash at some point.

Of course the 1% is killing them.

If Cags and Slepy could stay healthy and JJK be a decent fourth liner and not get walked off the point (poor kid looked like he was going to puke on the bench after that) the speed issues are greatly reduced in the B6.

Next year however, 2 of the 4 C can’t be skating optional. I like Letestu, but he is not a good fit for this team with those boots and his 5v5 scoring. Strome would be fine at 4C but he has to get a raise and at ~3M he has to be a good 3rd liner.

This makes me worry for Nuge. If Drai is at centre, Nuge has to be a top 6 winger to justify his salary. That is a fantastic option, to have 3 T6 centres in the lineup greatly hedges injury torpedoing the team.

Unless they plan to run a 6M 3C Maroon has to go or Nuge is our new T6 RW. Yama and JP can alternate to 3RW as needed next season, cheap other than bonuses. Actually playing them half on third line will reduce those bonus potentials.

Strome needs to be that affordable 3C or they’ll have to trade him rather than re-up. He’s a smart player, right shot, I hope he keeps progressing. And takes some skating lessons next summer if he stays.

I understand this point but if a team can figure out how to stop goals… well, bats are streaky. Make sure your ass is covered and then take what you can. At the season’s start, we didn’t make sure our ass was covered. Brainfart/60 was deciding the games.

Why can’t we keep the Nuge line and move Drai to 3C. He’s getting paid 8.5 mill to drive a line.

I’m not sure i understand the point of your premise – take out the two best players, two of the best in the game, and replace them with worse players and the top 6 gets worse?

Replace Malkin and Crosby with average first liners and PIT’s top 6 is trash as well.

    Great points.

The season’s blown so far, but honestly these idiots(the team) have been reading how they’re locks to make the SC final all summer long. Meanwhile the rest of the NHL has taken note, so when it’s finally time to meet up for real our heroes are finding the opposition is fired up and ready to take them down.

The difference in the team is night and day from the first 10 games or so.

I’m giving them 20 games, then 30, then 40 or so then right up until February when the real hockey traditionally begins after the All Star break to see what’s really happening. As things stand they’re only a few points out of the playoffs.

  157. Scungilli Slushy says:

GMB3: Why can’t we keep the Nuge line and move Drai to 3C. He’s getting paid 8.5 mill to drive a line.

They could, except Drai is a better player so probably plays ahead of Nuge. The two main considerations are the cap, and also TOI. If they run 3 highly paid centres, Connor and Drai would have to reduce 5v5 TOI. They could go 18/18/15/9 for the 4C and bump up who’s hot in game. Would everyone stay happy? They would also need wingers that can cash and aren’t high salary. I think that’s coming from within but you never know.

I think that is a good plan for a contending team as everyone stays fresh and would bring more each shift.

It seems more likely they run two high TOI C and find a cheaper 3C from McLellan’s history (likes to load up the top 6). Drai stays with Connor and they get the most TOI. Or Nuge on somebody’s wing and Drai has his own line. T6 forwards want to play a lot. It also makes sense to run your best players more as your best players are on the ice more.

As said I prefer ideally spreading out the talent as the Pens do and create matchup issues and have players that have lots in the tank come playoffs. I also think it can lead to less injuries, tired players are more at risk to get hurt from everything I’ve heard former player talking heads say.

That being said I just checked Daily Faceoff and the Pens are running Kessel in the top 6, Sheahan who they picked up from the Wings at 3C and a grinder 4th line. Maybe a loaded top 6 is the flavour of the month now. The league tends to follow what the top teams are doing it seems.
