G26 2017-18: Maple Leafs at Oilers

The Maple Leafs are doing an enormous number of things the right way, and, with no Harold Ballard around to kill it (or hang up on Barbara Frum), prepare yourself for Stanley’s return to Toronto. They’re smart, they are procuring talent at a rapid clip, they have balance, depth and at least one franchise player. It’s your basic nightmare, but at least it isn’t the Habs.

THE ATHLETIC

The special Lowetide offer is here. Great stocking stuffer!

DIRTY WATER, YEAR OVER YEAR

  • Oilers in November 2015: 4-7-2, goal differential -9 (10 points in 13 games)
  • Oilers in November 2016: 5-9-1, goal differential -3 (11 points in 15 games)
  • Oilers in November 2017: 7-7-1, goal differential -3

This is the final game of November, we’ll review the month tomorrow before moving on to a look at December (it’s going to be a tough month, again!) on Saturday’s post. I don’t think you should bet money on the Oilers tonight, but a win this evening would be a fantastic way to end a very difficult month.

AFTER 26, YEAR OVER YEAR

  • Oilers 15-16: 8-15-2, goal differential -16
  • Oilers 16-17: 13-10-2, goal differential +10
  • Oilers 17-18: 10-13-2, goal differential -13

G26 in 2015-16 was a 3-2 shootout win over the Bruins and a year later the score was also a 3-2 win, this time over the Ducks and Leon in overtime (No. 10 on the season).

WHAT TO EXPECT FROM NOVEMBER

  • At home to: Pittsburgh, New Jersey, Detroit (Expected: 2-1-0) (Actual 1-2-0)
  • On the road to: NYI, New Jersey, NYR, Washington (Expected: 1-2-1) (Actual: 2-1-1)
  • At home to: Vegas, St. Louis (Expected 1-1-0) (Actual: 1-1-0)
  • On the road to: Dallas, St. Louis, Detroit, Buffalo, Boston (Expected 2-2-1) (Actual 2-3-0)
  • At home to: Arizona, Toronto (Expected 1-1-0) (Actual 1-0-0)
  • Overall expected result: 7-7-2, 16 points in 16 games
  • Current results: 7-7-1, 15 points in 15 games

Well, here we are! Nerdy on the highest, but I’m rather pleased at how close my prediction turned out. I will celebrate by fumbling the December prediction tomorrow.

CAM TALBOT

He didn’t practice yesterday and there is uncertainty this morning. A recall would likely see Nick Ellis at the airport at some point and possibly Jesse Puljujarvi (or Anton Slepyshev) heading for Bakersfield. Jujhar Khaira practiced yesterday, so there’s no injured player we know of to be placed on IR, so that’s the play if Talbot is injured short term. If he’s injured long term, that’s probably a “leave the gun, take the cannoli” moment for the season.

EARLY BARONS GAME

The Bakersfield Condors have a game at 11:30 Edmonton time, those Condors boys have to be awake and ready to go 10:30 left coast time this morning. Lordy. It’s a home game, so that may help and it will give us an early indication about Nick Ellis. If Edward Pasquale starts and Shane Starrett (or other) is backup, chances are Ellis is heading north. I bet we find out about Ellis before game time in Bakersfield.

MAKING BETTS

The Edmonton Oilers traded Taylor Hall for Adam Larsson, gambling that Connor McDavid, Leon Draisaitl and newly drafted Jesse Puljujarvi could push the river. The club traded Jordan Eberle for Ryan Strome as a cost cutting measure and bet on Anton Slepyshev, Jesse Puljujarvi, Kailer Yamamoto or Drake Caggiula replacing Eberle.

The Toronto Maple Leafs have an identical need. It’s actually amazing that we have such a fresh ‘top dead center’ comparable for a situation. Toronto has some fine young wingers (William Nylander, Mitch Marner) they could cash for a RHD and haven’t done it. The Leafs have their Nuge (Kadri) and a superior veteran support group (JVR, Marleau) plus Morgan Reilly who is a fine young defender to my eye.

The Leafs didn’t trade Marner for a RHD, the club signed Ron Hainsey instead (the Demers option, for those who would like a direct comparable). It’s working like a charm.

Tonight, you’re going to see the Leafs come in waves, delivering skill on three lines and dangerous everywhere. I don’t think they are a Stanley Cup team this season, but they could absolutely duplicate what the Oilers did in the spring. And that deepest cut for Oilers fans? The Maple Leafs are far less likely to take a step back the following season. My opinion.

That’s a gigantic trade, I love it for the NJ Devils. Henrique is a capable NHL center, Vatanen is struggling this season but has terrific talent. Fantastic trade for Shero.

If Puljujarvi or Slepy are sent down to ‘Make Room for Nick’ (not a bad sitcom name) then these lines don’t happen. I like them mostly, although it’s a big ask of JP to play against the Kadri line (nasty bit of business that fellow, he’s a fantastic player). Puljujarvi has tightened up the defensive play this year (still thinks he’s a center) perhaps it’s a good fit. I’m not certain the coach likes that alignment though and believe there may be a disconnect between coach and management on this player and his usage.

LOWDOWN WITH LOWETIDE

At 10 this morning, we’re drunk with guests! Scheduled to appear, TSN1260:

  • Bruce McCurdy, Cult of Hockey. Oilers versus Leafs, this could be epic on the ice, on twitter, everywhere!
  • James Mirtle, The Athletic. Leafs arrive loaded for bear and looking like a strong contender.
  • Rob Vollman, ESPN and NHL.com. The gap between Talbot and Brossoit, plus the Analytics All-Star Team.
  • Frank Seravalli, TSN. The big Ducks-Devils trade, Oilers trying to climb, what is the aftermath of missing the playoffs?

10-1260 text, @Lowetide on twitter. Talk soon!

    Drake Marchant.

I’ll take that player any day.

Mozilla: This is our fastest Firefox yet. Faster than Chrome and Edge.

    Firefox: Lol.

  6. Jethro Tull says:

JP is a fantastic talent but not ready yet. I think he’s just not used to people being either as fast or faster than him.

  7. Munny says:

    Pouzar:
Nice play Klef. I see you.

He has born down on his game tonight to my eye. Working. Focused.

  8. Munny says:

    Stunning save.

  9. theycallmeBill says:

Kris Russell may not be a fancy stats fella, the best dman on the team and according to many; vastly overpaid, but if can’t give credit where credit is due… go bite a vein filled blood sausage.
The man is a Gord damned hockey player and I am happy he’s on the blue line

  10. treevojo says:

    Bro with a beaut

  11. Pouzar says:

Nice “fly by” by Khaira on the 4th goal. Well done.

  12. OmJo says:

I told ya LB is good!

  13. Ice Sage says:

A Matthews McDavid OT would be an early seasonal treat

  14. BONE207 says:

Gotta say…guys like Kass, Russell,Khaira, Testube & Brossoit have come to play above their heads on this addled night of hockey. When they all roll they can overcome their first 20 games

  15. Lloyd B. says:

    OmJo:
I told ya LB is good!

    Thank you

  16. Munny says:

    That chant is surreal

  17. OmJo says:

If LB played more I think he’d have better starts during games.

We’re gonna find out over the next two weeks.

  18. Réal Goudenyéu says:

    Hey Drew STFU about Patrick

  19. OmJo says:

Remenda calling Marleau Patrick on purpose is aggravating.

  20. Munny says:

This game does have the faint cologne of 1985.

  21. Lloyd B. says:

    This is great hockey

  22. Minister D- says:

Off topic, but was there any mention of the passing of Tommy Keene last week? Only 59, brilliant songwriter. “I don’t feel right at all” (1986) seems appropriate, but I’d always defer to “Nothing Can Change You,” which is pretty much a perfect power pop song.

  23. BONE207 says:

If Nurse could slap (shoot) the way he can face punch (polak) he’d be a Gord

  24. unca miltie says:

Can we have a 6 to 6 tie. Then LT gets his expectations

  25. Munny says:

There’s a player there in Mr Khaira

  26. BONE207 says:

    unca miltie:
Can we have a 6 to 6 tie. Then LT gets his expectations

Speaking of Who…where is LT. At the game?

  27. Réal Goudenyéu says:

    Lloyd B.:
    This is great hockey

Well the NHL will be sure to put a stop to it.

  28. Lloyd B. says:

Timing …. its a thing. Call in tomorrow.

  29. OmJo says:

Ngl, the atmosphere in an Oilers v. Leafs SCF series would be incredible.

  30. Surrey Oiler says:

Somehow take this to OT please!!!

  31. Pouzar says:

    BONE207:
If Nurse could slap (shoot) the way he can face punch (polak) he’d be a Gord

9 pts on the year now? All EV? Gotta be a respectable ranking no?

  32. OriginalPouzar says:

    Lloyd B.:
    This is great hockey

Its fun and exciting hockey – great game win or lose.

I don’t know about “great hockey” – the Oilers are still turning the puck over every few shifts leading to Grade A chances against. They are dominating play but still making HUGE mistakes.

  33. Thorin says:

    Munny:
    That chant is surreal

I can’t make it out, what are they saying after “Let’s go Oilers”?

  34. Ice Sage says:

    OmJo:
Ngl, the atmosphere in an Oilers v. Leafs SCF series would be incredible.

Bettman will not allow that, but we can dream

  35. Munny says:

    My poor beating heart

  36. russ99 says:

    Surrey Oiler:
Somehow take this to OT please!!!

As fun as that would be, our boys deserve this, and It would really be something to build from.

    Let’s win in regulation.

    Ohhhhh!!!!

  37. OriginalPouzar says:

Jesse has been just fine tonight but this would be a decent time to put Drai up at 1RW for a shift.

  38. russ99 says:

Thorin: I can’t make it out, what are they saying after “Let’s go Oilers”?

    Go Leafs go.

    Dueling chants.

  39. Scungilli Slushy says:

Man JP is a heady player. It would be a mistake to not let him get acclimated to the league. When he gets a little stronger and more confident all will be happy with him.

The other guy young looks nice.

  40. OmJo says:

    BONE207:
If Nurse could slap (shoot) the way he can face punch (polak) he’d be a Gord

    Could happen in time.

Still young enough to get better next season.

So glad we didn’t give up on him.

  41. Munny says:

Be smarter Connor. And more selfish.

  42. BONE207 says:

Pouzar: 9 pts on the year now? All EV? Gotta be a respectable ranking no?

Remember him in junior playoffs against Connor? He was a Greek Gord

  43. OmJo says:

Ice Sage: Bettman will not allow that, but we can dream

Yeah Bettman can eat a dick.

I don’t get it though because that’s probably be the most watched playoff series of the last decade.

  44. Jethro Tull says:

Ice Sage: Bettman will not allow that, but we can dream

Bettman’s wet dream is San Diego vs. Kansas.

  45. hunter1909 says:

This has all the makings of a 4-4 tie. Oilers win in OT.

  46. Réal Goudenyéu says:

OmJo: Yeah Bettman can eat a dick.

I don’t get it though because that’s probably be the most watched playoff series of the last decade.

Yes but who would be watching? Canadians don’t count.

  47. Ice Sage says:

Réal Goudenyéu: Yes but who would be watching? Canadians don’t count.

Canadians WOULD watch Betmann eat a dick (he wouldn’t have to get on his knees either).

  48. Surrey Oiler says:

    hunter1909:
This has all the makings of a 4-4 tie. Oilers win in OT.

    Don’t get me so excited!!!

  49. Lloyd B. says:

OriginalPouzar: Its fun and exciting hockey – great game win or lose.

I don’t know about “great hockey” – the Oilers are still turning the puck over every few shifts leading to Grade A chances against. They are dominating play but still making HUGE mistakes.

That’s what makes it great. Two young teams with tons of talent going end to end.

BOTH teams playing fast and trying to make plays instead of trapping the shit out of the game.

Of all the folks here I thought you would appreciate this type of game.

Positively great game. Or not I guess … from where you are sitting. Surprises me.

    GO Hockey!

  50. Minister D- says:

    Lloyd B.,

Oh yeah, sorry…uh, the Oilers are my favourite squadron, etc.

  51. hunter1909 says:

    OmJo: Could happen in time.

Still young enough to get better next season.

So glad we didn’t give up on him.

Not wanting to toot my own horn, but I predicted Nurse would break out bigtime this season.

Not rocket science. Nurse is a blue chip prospect with royal bloodlines. He got injured 1.5 seasons ago and was smart enough to work on his overall game while recovering.

That alone proves his innate quality.

  52. Bag of Pucks says:

C’mon lads. Get the win for Laurent.

Puck bunnies for all for a W in regulation.

  53. OriginalPouzar says:

    Nice play by Strome.

I’m really starting to like him – nice depth talent.

  54. BONE207 says:

Oh oh…4th CR…overtime & tomorrow goin to be a challenge

  55. Munny says:

    The rook

  56. Réal Goudenyéu says:

Mcdavid doesn’t know what to do if there’s no one to pass to haha

  57. Munny says:

    This is intense

  58. OriginalPouzar says:

Lloyd B.: That’s what makes it great. Two young teams with tons of talent going end to end.

Positively great game.Or not I guess … from where you are sitting. Surprises me.

    GO Hockey!

I very much am appreciating the game – its exciting and I’m very much enjoying it.

Was just noting that many/most of the Leaf’s great chances have come from really bad Oiler turnovers – not great hockey.

Oilers have dominated almost 40 minutes of this game though – they are playing great hockey except for those damn mistakes.

  59. Munny says:

    Unfuckingbelievable

  60. StixMalone says:

    Typical…..

  61. treevojo says:

    Onf

  62. Réal Goudenyéu says:

    What in the fuck

  63. Munny says:

They’re cursed. This team is cursed.

  64. hunter1909 says:

    Oh dear.

  65. OmJo says:

Looked like Russell shot that one at first.

  66. Lucinius says:

    Sigh…

  67. OmJo says:

    He did!

  68. hunter1909 says:

    I officially hate life.

  69. StixMalone says:

    Russel with 2 goals…

  70. LMHF#1 says:

Are you EFFING KIDDING ME RUSSELL?!?!??!

    WTAF????

  71. OriginalPouzar says:

    That was disappointing.

Two bad plays by Russell in a row.

  72. Jethro Tull says:

What the actual fuck. Why would that even enter your thought process to do that?

  73. LMHF#1 says:

    Munny:
They’re cursed. This team is cursed.

That wasn’t luck, that was stupid.

  74. frjohnk says:

    Kris Russell
    Double Agent

  75. DBO says:

    Wow. Russell. Wow.

  76. Ice Sage says:

    LOLOLOLOLOLOL

What a disaster this team is

  77. BeerMe says:

4×4 right there boys. 4 by fucking 4

  78. BONE207 says:

    hunter1909:

That alone proves his innate quality.

Speaking of which…the more I read your stuff the more I understand yours

  79. treevojo says:

    Just a gross finish

  80. Munny says:

    And then some salt.

  81. Melvis says:

That’s all I need. A Steve Smith reminder.

  82. Lucinius says:

How does Marlaeu get an assist on that?

  83. OmJo says:

Since when do own-goals get assists?

  84. Réal Goudenyéu says:

    Insulting.

  85. Pouzar says:

It’s how it had to end.

  86. Confused says:

    Unbelievable!

  87. LMHF#1 says:

On the plus side, JP looked like a high draft pick in that game.

  88. OmJo says:

    Wow.

    Well…

    Wow.

  89. Lucinius says:

I’d say the Oilers deserved to lose that, if only because of the first period.

The team has no luck. Karma for last year? Don’t know. Just.. ugly.

  90. Edmonton_fan says:

Brings back fond memories of Steve Smith… This is just a game they are playing… 😉

  91. Réal Goudenyéu says:

What a fucking absolutely horrible way to lose.

  92. My Tierless Retina says:

I’m going to need everyone to go ahead and be more descriptive with their comments. I’m at work.

  93. russ99 says:

    Ugh, rough way to lose.

But a good solid effort, and Brossoit was OK. Let’s beat Calgary.

  94. Oil2Oilers says:

    theycallmeBill:
Kris Russell may not be a fancy stats fella, the best dman on the team and according to many; vastly overpaid, but if can’t give credit where credit is due… go bite a vein filled blood sausage.
The man is a Gord damned hockey player and I am happy he’s on the blue line

    Still feel that way?

  95. gogliano says:

    My Tierless Retina,

Russell slapshot past Brossoit for the Leafs win.

  96. Lucinius says:

Time to avoid any kind of ‘national’ sports media for awhile.

  97. LMHF#1 says:

Russell has 2 goals this year.

If I recall correctly, in the other game he scored, he put one in his own net too.

  98. Rebilled says:

    How many 80’s Canadian witches…

  99. BeerMe says:

Russell scored on Brossoit with 1 minute left. It was almost as bad as Laine

  100. Ice Sage says:

That ‘winning’ goal for To is the defining moment of the season.

Don’t know where they go from here but change is gonna come. Bylsma time!

  101. Nailer Yakumoto says:

Steve Smith – I made a mistake once.

Kris Russell – Hold my beer.

  102. Réal Goudenyéu says:

    Coach getting called out

  103. Crazy Pedestrian says:

Cursed, hexed, nixed, all of the bad stuff! Let’s all smash things!

  104. Pouzar says:

    Réal Goudenyéu:
    Coach getting called out

    By?

  105. Oil2Oilers says:

The league should investigate abnormal betting patterns on this game.

From the opening penalty on Nurse to the five hole shot on his own net by Russell this game reeks of being fixed

  106. ashley says:

Well I’ve seen hundreds if not thousands of own goals in my time, but I can honestly say I’ve never seen anything like that. Hard wrist shot at your own net?

That’s right up there with the ref taking down Yakupov. It’s so weird I can’t even process it.

  107. Ice Sage says:

    Réal Goudenyéu:
    Coach getting called out

Deservedly so – this team has not been well-prepared all year – they get owned early and seem to have to figure it out for themselves as the game goes on. Good guy TMac but we all heard from SJS fanbase what a poor bench manager and strategist he is. Babcock will have kind words of course, the sly old dog!

  108. Bag of Pucks says:

Whatever we do, let’s not hang this on Brossoit. He played well enough to win. imo

    Drai line invisible tonight.

Not going to win many with Larsson and Sekera out.

  109. BONE207 says:

    My Tierless Retina:
I’m going to need everyone to go ahead and be more descriptive with their comments. I’m at work.

Scramble near the net…Russell ( alleged double agent) swiping to clear a bouncing puck hits the puck past a surprised LB. He couldn’t connect that well if he was in the opposition crease….FUCK

  110. Munny says:

    Pouzar:
    By?

    Shannon

  111. Réal Goudenyéu says:

    Ice Sage:
That ‘winning’ goal for To is the defining moment of the season.

Don’t know where they go from here but change is gonna come.Bylsma time!

    Agreed.

For better or worse that’s it for 2017-18.

  112. Pouzar says:

    Oil2Oilers:
The league should investigate abnormal betting patterns on this game.

From the opening penalty on Nurse to the five hole shot on his own net by Russell this game reeks of being fixed

Still shaking my head at that penalty.

  113. Diablo says:

Horrible ending – I feel bad for Russell who had an otherwise good game.
I don’t think we have to worry about Russell’s NMC – after tonight he’ll be run out of town by the fans and media. He’ll beg Chia to trade him at the deadline.

  114. frjohnk says:

    Great game by 4th line.
Russell played well tonight. Unfortunate break for him and the team.
Did TMac just run 4 D for the 3rd period?

  115. Thinker says:

Russel Resets are getting a little rusty I guess.

  116. SK Oiler Fan says:

Well the oilers were way below their normal pace for own goals.
    Entertaining period though. Good pace.
Do as many Fed up events happen to other teams? Anybody follow another team close enough to know?

  117. Lloyd B. says:

    there is an interesting point.

Why put the fourth line on the last minute of the game no matter how well they have done this game.

Leave one of the best if not the best player in the world on the bench.

Hmmm … maybe Mclellan doesn’t like coaching these guys.

  118. hoser313 says:

But if you are going to shoot on your own goal, put some ZING on it!

  119. littleenglish says:

    Oil2Oilers,

We have a Truther here folks! Actually Russell is real-life malware. I feel partially responsible for making this assertion before the game.

  120. Munny says:

    Pouzar: By?

For having the 4th line out there and not McD. Altho he was surely the next shift and had been out recently.

  121. Pouzar says:

I’m over it. Exciting and entertaining game but this team is fucked with those not so Special teams.

Fire them coaches to the sun.

  122. OmJo says:

Well, if you can’t laugh at yourself…

In all honesty, the way we lost tonight is hilarious.

I wonder how many players before Russell have ties the game up and then scored the game winning goal for the opposing team.

This might be a thing now. Call it a Russell.

  123. OriginalPouzar says:

What an entertaining game to watch.

The Oilers dominated play for 40 minutes – they made a very high number of turnovers leading to Grade A chances against but they carried play for the last 40 minutes.

The loss is very disappointing but I’m proud of their effort and compete, especially being without Talbot and Larsson and down 2-0 early – they could easily have folded.

We probably won’t make the playoffs this year – it looks like a year where the breaks just always go the other way but this organization has many great pieces and there are a few bubbling under in junior.

This team will revert back to being a top team next year.

    Go Oilers!

  124. littleenglish says:

    Ice Sage:
That ‘winning’ goal for To is the defining moment of the season.

Don’t know where they go from here but change is gonna come.Bylsma time!

    Oh God no

  125. BONE207 says:

    Crazy Pedestrian:
Cursed, hexed, nixed, all of the bad stuff! Let’s all smash stuff!

    Damn plastic bottles !!!

  126. Munny says:

    frjohnk:
    Great game by 4th line.
Russell played well tonight. Unfortunate break for him and the team.
Did TMac just run 4 D for the 3rd period?

Edit: Looking at TOI, yes. Although I believe Gryba/Auvitu got a couple of shifts.

  127. Pescador says:

    Tmac;
    “I’m all out of ideas”

  128. Diablo says:

    OmJo:
Well, if you can’t laugh at yourself…

In all honesty, the way we lost tonight is hilarious.

I wonder how many players before Russell have ties the game up and then scored the game winning goal for the opposing team.

This might be a thing now. Call it a Russell.

And with 1 min left in the game to boot. Man that Karma is a mean bastard.

  129. Réal Goudenyéu says:

    Pouzar:
I’m over it. Exciting and entertaining game but this team is fucked with those not so Special teams.

Fire them coaches to the sun.

Yup van won Calgary smoked the dogs it’s time to retool and make changes.

I’ll start watching differently now – as in I’m not expecting playoffs.

  130. russ99 says:

Bad play, but he got turned around. That was a big factor.

If we can start showing up in the first period at home we may have something.

  131. Diablo says:

LT – we need the Picard face palm pic for tomorrow’s post!

  132. Bag of Pucks says:

    Ice Sage:
That ‘winning’ goal for To is the defining moment of the season.

Don’t know where they go from here but change is gonna come.Bylsma time!

I go with Dave Tippett over Bylsma.

    Great game by 4th line.
Russell played well tonight. Unfortunate break for him and the team.
Did TMac just run 4 D for the 3rd period?

Gryba played a bit for sure – don’t recall seeing Auvitu.

  135. littleenglish says:

    ashley,

Remember the Laine own goal against us. What goes around comes around.

  136. Ice Sage says:

    OriginalPouzar:
What an entertaining game to watch.

The Oilers dominated play for 40 minutes – they made a very high number of turnovers leading to Grade A chances against but they carried play for the last 40 minutes.

The loss is very disappointing but I’m proud of their effort and compete, especially being without Talbot and Larsson and down 2-0 early – they could easily have folded.

We probably won’t make the playoffs this year – it looks like a year where the breaks just always go the other way but this organization has many great pieces and there are a few bubbling under in junior.

This team will revert back to being a top team next year.

    Go Oilers!

Agreed that this team is less than the sum of it’s parts.
Am looking forward to LT’s piece on alternative coaches because ain’t no trade gonna turn this around.

  137. OmJo says:

It’s better the Oilers keep Tippett away from other teams.

It would be like idk… A superhero movie where the super hero and villian team up to defeat an even worse villian.

Yes, agreed. That seems a very good match – this guys need a defensive adjustment and some tactical deployment.

    Because of one gaffe?
Yes sir, I stand by what I said.

Man malloy… maybe this is just desserts for the fans. I’m all for being a fan, win, lose or shootout but holy snuff juice! The knives will be out for Russell for a very unfortunate play. Don’t understand at all. If the fate of the world hinged on that own goal, maybe I’d get bent out of shape but it is what it is.

  143. Professor Q says:

Really tough call. Off a keeled-over Marleau and right into an unsuspecting Rat Kadri. Brossoit did well though, despite circumstances.

I haven’t been paying much attention lately so the Talbot injury came as a surprise.

  144. Ice Sage says:

Thinker: Have we tried Brossoit on connor’s wing?

Yeah but the passes would go through his legs!
Just taking a cheap shot – kid did alright tonight

  145. Evilas says:

What do you think RUSS99, do you agree?

  146. Edmonton_fan says:

    Diablo:
Horrible ending – I feel bad for Russell who had an otherwise good game.
I don’t think we have to worry about Russell’s NMC – after tonight he’ll be run out of town by the fans and media. He’ll beg Chia to trade him at the deadline.

My concern is not with Russell the person or player. My concern is that Darnell Nurse has earned a decent raise – four defensemen are earning $4+ million a year until the end of 2021. Cap space is already suggesting RNH be traded.

  147. Crazy Pedestrian says:

  150. StixMalone says:

Babcock will lead this team to the playoffs. How far they go is anyone’s guess. Can’t really say the same about us. Every point counts unless you piss them away. It seems we are at least good at that,…

  151. hags9k says:

A “Russell” is something that can’t be blocked.

  155. Scungilli Slushy says:

Maybe Russ would be a good LW for Connor. Wicked spin and release.

  156. CrazyCoach says:

Well, I don’t feel so bad about putting one into my own net the other night in my old timers game. It sucks to do that, but I hope Russel is like me and he forgives Brossoit for not being ready for that shot. It just makes the dressing room a better place to be to not hold grudges.

Seriously though, the last two periods were insane and the Oilers totally outplayed them big time, I’m sure TSN will point this out during their extensive 22 minute coverage tomorrow. And all you jerkoffs wearing Leafs jerseys at Rogers tonight, remember one thing, I’ve never seen a Leafs cup in my lifetime and I’ll be 49 in three weeks.

    A couple quick observations.

Firstly, all this vitriol directed toward Gryba for his penalty. I saw comments early on about how he needs to keep his game simple and check guys. On that particular play, he was finishing his check and just pushed a little too hard. Now, if he doesn’t try to finish his check, then the boobirds get on him about his game. You can’t fault a player for taking a penalty for doing what he’s told to do. A trip 200 feet from your net when the puck is hitting the far blueline? Open for criticism. A boarding call on a guy finishing his check? Not ideal, but not a benching incident, unless it’s the third time in a period maybe.

Secondly, that PK is in sorts of trouble. What a totally misaligned monstrosity. Most PK’s are either based on the classic box or a diamond pattern. Ultimately the overall goal should be to limit shots from the slot or straight from the point, and to limit time and space. The Oilers don’t seem to be doing either. PP set ups have evolved from a box shape with two point shots and forwards crashing the net, to one that is shaped like an umbrella with one shooter. This has happened because equipment (namely helmets and skates) have evolved to the point where players block shots way more than they did in years past.

    What I always wanted on a PK was a few things;

    1) If the team sets up on the half boards, we will keep the puck to one side of the ice and not allow passes across the ice. Cross ice passes mean re-aligning and therefore more skating which tires a team out. If the puck carrier wants to stickhandle for 2 minutes on the sideboards, let them.
    2) Busy stick! I don’t seem this enough. Move your stick in a sweeping motion. Yeah a calm puck handler may not get distracted, but sometimes it causes enough of a distraction that players bobble a puck.
    3) Remember that a PP is in all reality a 5 on 5, if you count your goalie, who can communicate where the gaps are opening are seams missing coverage. All shots should be caught or frozen if possible.

    Just some thoughts.

    Best game all season.

Otherwise helluva game after the first, agreed coach best one all year.

The Leaf love on here was pretty entertaining, also detecting a bit of Flames love now,

Sometimes this place is an odd Oiler fan base 😉

  160. Scungilli Slushy says:

LB had a good game. At least it wasn’t a goalie loss. Good for him.

JP and JJ are keepers. A little wobbly, but you can see the hockey in them. And despite big can skate.

Benning looking far better, Klef as well.

Connor has the assist on the EN clincher. I hope he’s had enough of forcing dangerous plays at dangerous times/places – I have seen enough from him that I expect him to get the plot on that now.

Why can certain Oiler players only take a few strides and have to coast? And ease pressure. I’m thinking some guys can’t process and skate at the same time. If so a trait not wanted when drafting and acquiring.

    Thank you.

That PK is a hot mess. I’ve never really seen anything like that tonight and I can’t put my head around what it is trying to accomplish. From that goal, I saw two switches by the forwards and very little movement from the D, especially when they let a guy get behind them and sit on the edge of the crease. I’d go right back to basics and of course work on those draws. They win that draw, we may not even be talking about this.

Agree with everything else you said except this … LB was just as culpable on that own goal as Russell. He did not track the play and was not set when the shot came at him. Marleau was all over Russell there, and could have just as likely won the puck battle and gotten off a quick shot.

LB should have been ready for a shot on net but he lost his focus at the worst possible time.

The 2nd goal against was a softie, and on the Nylander PP goal LB is down early.

The Oilers have not had good consistent goaltending this year.

    Good post.

On the PK, we’ve been really bad on the cross ice plays, too slow to react, players not knowing who to cover, I’m surprised we haven’t been burned more often.

Looking forward to Saturday, show up in the first and play the same, we’ve got a great chance. We need to play with the lead a while, too often we’re playing catch-up. It’s a big disadvantage.

I’m surprised Todd hasn’t tried the home game hotel trick yet, to get better first period play.

  177. Pouzar says:

You know, our PK doesn’t really look any different than it did last year. The problem seems to be hesitation and lack of reading and reacting, especially when they are getting stretched out, or when the forwards do their little switch, or when the strong side forward has to cover for the D. Maybe we should try something else.

  180. Crazy Pedestrian says:

So, are we all on board for turfing the season for the draft lottery yet? Cause I’ve pretty much thrown in the towel. This team has unfortunately turned into the next Colorado Avalanche… Great for one year, then dog shit for the next 2-3 years… And their doing it with style!

Teasing fans with the crushing of Vegas, only to lose the next three games, then getting toyed with by Buffalo in probably their worst game in years, literally one game after playing one of their best games this year against Detroit.
Then there’s this game… man this one takes the cake in the “No fracking way!” category… a last minute own goal to lose it in regulation, by the guy that everyone was cheering like crazy for when he scored the tying goal…

This team just loves to give you hope and raises your spirits, then promptly smashes it down and crushes your soul…

And don’t get me started with the management…

Look, no doubt Russell screwed up huge.

But LB should have been ready for a shot directed at his net – the puck was in his slot area with a Leaf player right on top of his d man … you damn right he should have been ready for any kind of shot directed at the net.

Oh and drysaddle HAS to be better. You sign your name on that big ass contract you’d better live up to it. Was invisible tonight.

Drai didn’t have his best night, and this season isn’t going as well as last year (currently tied for 62nd in points in the league, and tied for 57th in points per game). However, if anyone has a problem with the cap hit from a big ass contract, they should be angry with the GM and not the player.

If the player thinks he’s worth more than he is, let him sit until he thinks about it. If the player wants to get paid like a centre who drives his own line, force the coach to play him as a centre who drives his own line. Or, if the coach refuses to follow that request, and the player still thinks he should be paid like a centre, do a bridge deal.

I hate the Maple Leafs (and the Flames) but their management teams just seem to be much, much better than ours. What a gross season.

Reading this blog loved how we supported our Oilers before, during and after the game.

What a blasting and blasted shot by Russell.

Game was thrilling ride, Oilers never felt down and out in period 1, 2,3 that they couldn’t make a comeback and Kassian and Russell really dangerous goal scorers right now—keep them on the ice for offensive zone draws!

It was a loss which is painful for my vision of a long winning streak. So lets start again with the streak the next game!

  196. JimmyV1965 says:

Still very disappointing in the finish last night even after a good 5 hours sleep.

Oh well – this team showed how dynamic they can be offensively and in the offensive zone. The just need to find a way to not turn the puck over so egregiously so many time.

If Adam Larsson is playing, they win that game – hands down.

What the heck is wrong with him?
