G27 2017-18: Oilers at Flames

Two months into the 2017-18 season and the nightmare coma continues. The Edmonton Oilers employ fantastic talent and replacement level players side by each and it has caught up to them in a big way. If the club had a veteran winger with scoring ability and a No. 2 RHD, I think we’d be looking at a playoff spot this morning. They’re not coming, this is us. We’re on to Cleveland Calgary.

THE ATHLETIC!!

Great new offer! Includes a free 7-day trial so you can try The Athletic on for size free and see if they enjoy the in-depth, ad-free coverage on the site. If you don’t feel it’s worth the $4.49/month, cancel anytime during trial before getting charged. Offer is here.

LONG DECEMBER, YEAR OVER YEAR

  • November 2015: 7-6-1, goal differential -8
  • November 2016: 7-3-4, goal differential +3

G1 December 2015 was a 3-2 shootout win over the Boston Bruins, G1 December 2016 was a 6-3 victory featuring an explosive power play for the first time all season. If the Oilers can straighten out the special teams they can get back into contention but both look helplessly hapless right now.

AFTER 27, YEAR OVER YEAR

  • Oilers 15-16: 9-15-2, goal differential -16
  • Oilers 16-17: 14-10-2, goal differential +11
  • Oilers 17-18: 10-14-2, goal differential -15

As we begin the month, pretty clear the current Oilers are repeating the 2015-16 season. As you’re recall, the Oilers finished with a 31-43-8 record, last in the Pacific Division, last in the Western Conference, No. 29 in the NHL. That’s an embarrassing thought for Year Three Chiarelli and McLellan. G27 2015-16 saw Edmonton win 2-1 over Dallas in overtime, and last season a 2-1 OT loss to the Minnesota Wild.

WHAT TO EXPECT FROM DECEMBER

  • On the road to: Calgary (Expected: 0-0-1) (Actual: 0-0-0)
  • At home to: Philadelphia (Expected 1-0-0) (Actual: 0-0-0)
  • On the road to: Montreal, Toronto, Columbus (Expected 1-2-0) (Actual 0-0-0)
  • At home to: Nashville (Expected 0-1-0) (Actual 0-0-0)
  • On the road to: Minnesota (Expected 1-0-0) (Actual 0-0-0)
  • At home to: San Jose, St. Louis, Montreal (Expected 1-1-1) (Actual 0-0-0)
  • On the road to: Winnipeg (Expected 0-1-0) (Actual 0-0-0)
  • At home to: Chicago, Winnipeg (Expected 1-1-0) (Actual 0-0-0)
  • Overall expected result: 5-6-2, 12 points in 13 games
  • Current results: 0-0-0

There’s just too much wrong. Trading actual assets this close to dead in the water makes no sense and with Talbot gone for December we’re looking at another audition position. There’s just too much wrong here, from special teams to injuries to goaltending to open auditions, and on it goes.

You can light candles and pray and I will never count out a Connor McDavid team completely, but this dog won’t hunt. It’s time to move on and discuss other things. A team can get a lot from a losing season (wrote about it at The Athletic) and we’ll begin our look at the draft early January. Cool?

50-MAN ROSTER

This is the current 50-man list, we could see the number reduced if Iiro Pakarinen is collected on waivers. This season has exposed the weaknesses in this roster, important to remember where it was 2015 spring.

50-MAN CHIARELLI’S FIRST DAY

I’d say the team is better in goal, defense, center, with both wings favoring the team from three years ago. Amazing to see who turned out among the prospects (Klefbom, Nurse, Davidson, Pitlick).

He is an interesting player, my look at him for The Athletic suggests we’re looking at a shy offensive contributor. The story of this season for Peter Chiarelli appears to be auditioning right-wingers who can’t reach 2.00/60 for love nor money. It’s actually pretty amazing.

OILERS ROSTER AND LINEUP

One area I’ll be following over the coming months is that baffling right-wing conundrum. Scoring wingers are more plentiful than effective centers, they are basically the “first base” option for hockey. “First base” is the one position anyone can play, save Al Oliver when he came over from the Texas Rangers, God love him.

Interesting to see everyone over 50 percent Corsi among the blue (except Russell, but he’s basically there), that would have been a dream back in 2010 fall. Talbot’s even-strength save percentage is interesting, bringing up something else we’ll talk about as the season rolls along: Improving special teams.

LB has been horrendous on too many goals tonight

Maybe a bad fall by Russell on the Bennett goal, otherwise I can’t say how this can be blamed on d at all.

Only change will be Ellis starting next game IMO.

Goaltending will be the big focus is they lose… Or win even. Not the fact the team itself stopped moving its feet in the 3rd period.

Kinda good to get the win and put an ! on the fact that Brossoit ain’t an NHL goalie.

    Suck it Lames!

  52. OriginalPouzar says:

Well, it ended up closer than it needed to be but that is for the most part all on our goaltending (and falling d-men and a bad PIM by Maroon).

For 40 minutes, this team just dominated the flames on the road.

They get a big divisional win and learn a lesson about finishing games.

    GO OILERS!

  53. Crazy Pedestrian says:

    Ice Sage:

Man… he was looking so good too… now I’m not so sure… Ellis next game?

Choking that away would have been too much to bear.

  57. StixMalone says:

Me thinks Chia is going goalie shopping at the mall..

  58. My Tierless Retina says:

On the positive side, LB will clear waivers after that performance. Now Chia just has to find a competent backup without giving up Nuge and a 1st.

  59. StixMalone says:

    Doing the Russel is trending

  60. SayItAin'tSo, Gretz, SayItAin'tSo! says:

    OilClog,

    Such an epic troll haha.

    Well THAT was entertaining

LB… can’t say we rushed that prospect but this was some serious shake

Two of those were from unforgivable angles

Very deep on the other two

Everyone needs to keep an even keel here, this was goaltending and goaltending only

Please please remember the other 5 breakaways they had and didn’t score on

Please remember the depth scoring and the fact that Leon is on a cold streak

Overall this was a good game, they need to keep the good feels and move on.

Philly is hurting right now and its a very winnable game

  61. hunter1909 says:

  73. LadiesloveSmid says:

Trade for Pickard out of TOR. EDM has no chance with LB

  84. OriginalPouzar says:

It may be time to see what the cost is on Picard or Hutchinson – gotta come cheap if they are in the minors.

Lousy timing but he was sticking up for a teammate

  91. hunter1909 says:

    JP was a monster tonight.

He might end up with more goals than that Jet Finn.

  92. danny says:

The thing is LB is a better goaltender than he showed tonight, but unfortunately he doesn’t have confidence right now and his team is in no position to let him have time to find it.

  93. jzed says:

I’m not a tender, but on the stick side, if your stick shaft inside the net, impossible to seal against post with your body?

  97. JimmyV1965 says:

Frickin bizarre. You gain zero confidence from a game you were leading 6-1. And now we’ll hear how the team played so bad. Frickin horrible. 3 goals on 4 shots. I don’t think even one of the goals should have went in. If the GM doesn’t get a goalie by Wednesday he’s letting down the team. And I’m getting sick of the reffing. Two dirty hits by Hathaway on one play and Maroon gets a penalty.

  98. OriginalPouzar says:

Holy crap, the alarm goes off for the gym in 4 hours and 9 minutes, OrigPouz better get to sleep.

Great (most of the) game tonight!

  99. who says:

I would come right back with LB next game. Back on the horse and all that. Give him a vote of confidence and see what he does with it.
If he struggles again then you give Ellis a shot.

  100. Crazy Pedestrian says:

fishman: Lousy timing but he was sticking up for a teammate

Plus, at 6-1, a “sticking up for your teammate” penalty is usually justified…

    …usually

  101. OmJo says:

    flyfish1168:
Kelly Hrudy is so wrong. LB is not learning the position at this point. He is either an NHL goalie or not.

    24 years old.

Talbot didn’t become a full time NHL goaltender until 25ish.
Crawford didn’t become a full time NHL goaltender until 25ish.
Bishop didn’t become a full time NHL goaltender until 26ish.

Of course there’s exceptions: Price, Quick, Dubnyk even.

But LB still has time. Still young enough.

  102. Ben says:

Pedro Chiptole about to blow his spicy deadline cap space on Halak? Man, hope he doesn’t give up more than a 3rd.

  103. OmJo says:

    OriginalPouzar,

    G’night

Glad the Oilers didn’t make you stay up for nothing

  104. Clarkenstein says:

Flames left wingers had eyes as big as saucers in the 3rd knowing only Russell and Brossoit stood between them and a goal! Good fking lord how can Chia watch this shit night after night and do absolutely nothing to improve the organization. Poor strategy in the 3rd by TMac too. It’s 6-1 in Calgary’s barn. Try and make it 10-1 FFS!! The most frustrating win I can remember in a long, long time.

  105. Réal Goudenyéu says:

    Pechetr:
Would also be nice if the 8.5 million dollar man showed up soon.

Yup you don’t get to hide when you make 8.5.

  106. Mike Wazowski says:

    Gret99zky,

He really wasn’t coaching them to sit back an let the Flames take it to them. Brossoit gave up two hideous goals. That technique needs to and can be fixed.

  107. danny says:

I loved Mike Smith in Stranger Things

  108. OmJo says:

    OriginalPouzar:
Yamamoto gets an assist on the OT winner.

    2 assists total.

2 assists for Yamamoto, no points for Benson.

That’s such an Oiler thing- those two not producing at the same time.

    Heh.

  109. Gret99zky says:

    Happy with the win.

Hated how the team played after making it 6-1.

Brossoit broke down but the team, and the coach, let him down by not pressing forward.

Didn’t this type of shit cost them a playoff win last year?

  110. SayItAin'tSo, Gretz, SayItAin'tSo! says:

    JimmyV1965,

LB won’t gain any confidence from this game. I think the rest of the team has a lot of good to take away and the post game interviews tells me they see this as well.

Thank goodness for the three days off here. Will allow everyone to calm the tits, heal the bruises and polish some things up.

Drai’s line needs a bit more time (its there but not quite)

I’m liking all the other lines right now

  111. Pechetr says:

    Clarkenstein,

Pretty sure Tmac had nothing to do with them taking their foot off the throat, taking a couple dumb penalties and having the goalie completely crater.

  112. My Tierless Retina says:

    Gret99zky,

They scored two from the goal line… Everyone did there jobs, that is on the goalie, no need to blame everyone else here

  115. Lloyd B. says:

I hope the Flames are selling those hats to finance the team. Won’t add a cent to team revenue.

  116. treevojo says:

Lucic on pace for 52 es points.

  117. My Tierless Retina says:

Not sure what the designer of that hat got, but it should have been 15 to life.

  118. Mike Wazowski says:

    SayItAin’tSo, Gretz, SayItAin’tSo!,

I wouldn’t say it was only goaltending. That weird “L” shaped PK isn’t working/being executed/understood. I don’t blame LB on that goal.

  119. JimmyV1965 says:

I’m seriously going to lose it if I see another goal go in from the red line. Goaltending has absolutely trashed the team this year.

  120. BONE207 says:

  122. SayItAin'tSo, Gretz, SayItAin'tSo! says:

    Mike Wazowski,

They were 0-4 with a shortie before that one though, no need to toss the baby out with that goal.

Not LBs fault really I agree

Testube was late getting out to the shooter

  126. Mike Wazowski says:

    SayItAin’tSo, Gretz, SayItAin’tSo!,

Tonight was one of their better nights on the PK but they’ve already given up almost as many goals on the PK at home as they did all of last year!

  127. Pescador says:

Brossoit broke down but the team, and the coach, let him down by not pressing forward.

Didn’t this type of shit cost them a playoff win last year?

I’m not trying to be a jerk, but that collapse is 100% on the goalie. It might be different if the Flames were scoring on High Danger chances. The goalie let down the team and killed any momentum. I texted a friend after the game and told him watch how many people start saying the team played bad. It’s not fair to the players.

  129. Ice Sage says:

    Great entertainment.
I’ve been critical of the coach but the time-out was the right move.
So tough to play shut-down D without Larsson and with rookie G. Good thing the fLames didn’t figure out the clear path down the Oilers’ right side until the third.
Irony is, if Smith had stayed in, fLames probably win.
LB’s issue was a mental one, IMO – after the second goal, he played too deep – this can be corrected and avoided with experience, he’s athletic enough.

  130. Réal Goudenyéu says:

who: Thought he had a solid game. What specifically did you not like?

    His box cars specifically.

  131. JimmyV1965 says:

Brossoit has to own two and maybe 3 of those goals but the skaters did sit back in the third.

  133. JimmyV1965 says:

    geowal:
That Brodie goal was karma for all those fuckers yelling “shoot” every time Russell had the puck in his own end.

That’s kinda douche by Flames fans, but hilarious.

  134. hunter1909 says:

JonyPro: I’m going to assume that wasn’t racist….

I don’t care what you think.

    Period.

  135. who says:

Réal Goudenyéu: His box cars specifically.

Hey the puck doesn’t go in every night. If he is carrying the play and creating chances for himself and his linemates I am happy. Thought he did that tonight.

  136. SayItAin'tSo, Gretz, SayItAin'tSo! says:

    Mike Wazowski,

    Yup you’re bang on.

I think Bruce brought up the stats the other day. Something like 59% on the PK at home, like several standard deviations away from historically bad. No idea what the hell is going on.

I’m really convinced this three days off will help.

Get rid of the last bumps and bruises, get Larsson back and have two full practice days with these forward lines.

    Leon’s line will benefit most

I like the battle that is heating up between Cammalleri and Sleppy, neither has been great so the competition should help.

Huge game from JP! This could be the story of the year if he blossoms. Baby steps and toning down my optimism but this was the first game where I felt he asserted himself. Two goals, could have had 4, and several excellent back checks, more please. Next up is grabbing and securing a PP spot. Confidence will breed confidence for this player.

Goals for is back up to the middle of the pack in the Pacific.

    The powerplay still sucks.

Connor is starting to kick out the jams

Leon is a tad off but thats just the switch to centre. The practices this week will be huge. Soon enough this line will find a groove.

Caggs was hitting everything in sight tonight. If he develops slightly more chip he’ll be growing into a Kadri mould. Very useful player.

This game reinforced my bullishness, they are still fragile but there’s a marked turn here (the flu bug did real damage).

Dammit a win on Wednesday would be huge

Hey Bross is young and under a lot of pressure, but they scored three goals on four shots. When players see these awful goals go in it is absolutely a confidence killer. Everyone starts playing bad.

  138. McSorley33 says:

    SayItAin’tSo, Gretz, SayItAin’tSo!,

Agreed, plus speed and tenacity on the forecheck……Long stick.

  139. hunter1909 says:

Prediction: Jesse Puljujarvi is going to be a fantastic hockey player.

Puljujarvi’s a lot like Draisaitl in that he’s big and seriously tough. He’s also bigger, lol

The Flames were trying to rough him up early on and his simple reaction…just putting up his hands and brushing them away bodes well for the McDavid line.

I’ll admit I stopped seriously watching halfway through the 3rd period, but only because the Oilers stopped playing their clearly superior game to the Calgary Johnny Hockey’s.

The first 50 minutes were amazingly Oiler’s centric. Almost comically so.

  140. thehop says:

hunter1909: When Lowetide’s involved emotionally, you know something big is up.

I was positive the man didn’t have emotions when it came to the Oilers.

    He’s right though.

Brossoit, in the best Dennis Green impression I can muster through text, IS WHO WE THOUGHT HE WAS, and he almost let them get away.

  141. OriginalPouzar says:

I wake up this morning with a smile on my face – enthused with the knowledge that we outplayed that team vastly for 40 minutes and came away with 2 points in regulation notwithstanding an implosion by our back-up goaltender.

I do have a concern about our goaltending right now but said right from the start of the season that I have confidence in Nick Ellis should Brossoit falter.

I am curious where the mind-set of our GM is at as I truly believe there are many more proven back-up tenders that could be acquired quickly and cheaply if he wants.

  142. jake70 says:

Take the 2 points and get out of dodge. Most irritating for me is the missed breakaways for 97, 29, 91, while 55 scores keeping it simple and shooting.

  143. OriginalPouzar says:

Letstu is the best breakaway/shootout guy on the team.

He’s proven to be a top shootout guy in the NHL over the last decade and his breakaway was essentially a shootout opportunity given the time he had.

In Drai’s defence, he was about an inch from putting that 5-hole.

  144. flyfish1168 says:

    OmJo: 24 years old.

As you pointed out age does appear to factor in if you are a true franchise type goalie. Even Crawford can’t be counted as a true franchise goalie. He just happens to be lucky to be with the Blackhawks.

LB at this point appears like a maybe OK back up. He doesn’t inspire confidence. I’m no goalie expert but I don’t like his deep in the net and down on his knees so quick. But tonight he let in 3 very soft ones and then his confidence was sucked right out of him. Those types of goals are really ones a good junior goalie can stop.

  145. Woodguy v2.0 says:

    Professor Q,

Actually, Drouin was his top winger at the time.

I have him behind Kucherov and Palat and close to Johnson, but he plays C a lot.

  146. Woodguy v2.0 says:

    OriginalPouzar,

    Deleted a post.

Didn’t realize you were talking about his last years in TBY.

    My bad.

  147. sliderule says:

fishman: Lousy timing but he was sticking up for a teammate

There is a way ro stick up without cross checking and roughing .

Get in his face and yap, face wash perhaps.

Lucic is much tougher and doesn’t take many of those really stupid penalties

The coach is the one who can control it so it’s partly on him

  148. Woodguy v2.0 says:

The list of goalies who aren’t NHL goalies at 25 and never become NHL goalies after that is much, much, much, much longer.

  149. Gret99zky says:

After that 6th goal (by Maroon on Calgary’s back-up) the team sure looked like it went into non-offense mode and started chipping it off the glass instead of making passes. Chasing the puck instead of controlling it.

Maybe Brossoit got the same message, “Don’t be too aggressive. Sit back. Defend the lead.”

There is no denying Brossoit was terrible in the third period but it wasn’t just his play that changed.

  150. Gret99zky says:

    OriginalPouzar:

In Drai’s defence, he was about an inch from putting that 5-hole.

In Brossoit’s defense, he was about an inch from stopping that Bennett shot.

  151. Captain Smarmy says:

    Get a better goalie

Fire whatever coach works on special teams to make a point that being a colossal failure is not an option.

  152. fishman says:

Well for two periods that was a real fun game last night. What more can we ask for being up 6-1 against hated rivals! 3 rd period not so much as LB had a melt down, which has left many questioning his future, but we still came away with two points which is what really mattered. We were also missing two of our top D and starting goalie.

I believe a few days off will be good for this group as I expect there are still lingering effects of the flu hanging around. Was reported yesterday the flu strain this year is really bad and that the flu shots given were not as effective as in past years.

We are still behind several teams for a wildcard spot and odds against us. Team is playing better and some players have really stepped up lately. Lets hope if nothing else we can stay in the race and you never know!!!!
