G39 2017-18: Jets at Oilers

The Edmonton Oilers arrive at New Year’s Eve in playoff mode, every game is huge and every loss is a terrible blow. A team with enough talent to win the division is now forced into a hard target search of every gas station, residence, warehouse, farmhouse, henhouse, outhouse and doghouse for two points each night. It’s a hard way to find out the trouble is real. For this Oilers team, passing one club at a time is key and that climb needs to begin tonight.

LONG DECEMBER

  • December 2015: 7-4-1, goal differential -4 (15 points)
  • December 2016: 6-2-4, goal differential +1 (16 points)
  • December 2017: 7-4-1, goal differential +9 (15 points)

G13 in 2015 was a 5-2 loss to the Los Angeles Kings, Trevor Lewis and Dustin Brown with three points each. Last year it was a 3-1 win over those same Kings. It’s just one game but a recovery month with eight wins would be a substantial turn north for a team that took forever to come together.

AFTER 39, YEAR OVER YEAR

  • Oilers 15-16: 15-20-3, goal differential -23 (33 points)
  • Oilers 16-17: 19-12-7, goal differential +10 (45 points)
  • Oilers 17-18: 17-18-3, goal differential -6 (37 points)

G39 in 2015 was a 1-0 loss to the Anaheim Ducks, a goal from Ryan Getzlaf the difference. Last year, a 3-1 loss to the Columbus Blue Jackets. A win tonight and this year’s team would be midway between the 2015 team and last year’s 103-point nutcracker.

WHAT TO EXPECT FROM DECEMBER

  • On the road to: Calgary (Expected: 0-0-1) (Actual: 1-0-0)
  • At home to: Philadelphia (Expected 1-0-0) (Actual: 0-1-0)
  • On the road to: Montreal, Toronto, Columbus (Expected 1-2-0) (Actual 2-1-0)
  • At home to: Nashville (Expected 0-1-0) (Actual 0-1-0)
  • On the road to: Minnesota (Expected 1-0-0) (Actual 1-0-0)
  • At home to: San Jose, St. Louis, Montreal (Expected 1-1-1) (Actual 3-0-0)
  • On the road to: Winnipeg (Expected 0-1-0) (Actual 0-1-0)
  • At home to: Chicago, Winnipeg (Expected 1-1-0) (Actual 0-0-1)
  • Overall expected result: 5-6-2, 12 points in 13 games
  • Current results: 7-4-1, 15 points in 12 games

A successful month either way, the run after the Philadelphia game (6-2-0) through the Christmas break may end up being the high mark of the season. Oilers have bled a little since.

TYLER BENSON

Benson had another big night (four assists) for the Vancouver Giants last night, now sits at 25gp, 14-23-37 (NHLE: 35 points). As we’ve discussed many times, Benson staying healthy was the number one goal this season. He’s covering that bet and flourishing. A good arrow.

AAPELI RASANEN

Rasanen is a promising prospect, exactly the type who can develop into a useful NHL player. Miles to go but his presence (and success) on a good Finland team indicates he has progressed since draft day.

ONE PIECE AT A TIME

We’re at the end of December, Edmonton is hanging with the playoff teams while also making very little progress in moving up the standings. The Bettman point means tough sledding but that’s the price of gloomy October starts.

Into January, I’ll probably add some draft stuff to the back of the GDT and summaries, and trade options will become more a part of things. Happy New Year, be safe and have fun!

    Well, Oilers gonna Oiler.

Hope everybody has a Happy New Year despite the result this evening.

  2. Gerta Rauss says:

    OmJo:
So, will LB get another start this season?

They might as well get him some games

This season is circling the bowl (some would argue it’s done already and it’s difficult to deny that)

He’s been an Oiler for more that 4 years now and they still don’t know what he is-put him in and see what you’ve got

  3. BONE207 says:

Maybe the next game the fans return the favor & not show up.

    OmJo,

And if that is the case (you’d take the other group) then the team construction is flawed and that is on the GM.

By that I mean the responsibility is on GM, coaches and players at this point.

    No disagreement there.

    Canada 1-0

    Baffling season.
Ottawa is the biggest drop back.
But look at Pittsburgh. Losing 4-1 to crappy Detroit. Cup champs with a horrid goal differential and in danger of missing the playoffs.
Then the Oilers. We aren’t alone. But the preseason Vegas odds definitely put the spotlight on this team.

Retool. Reload. Do not blow it up. This team still needs to address:
    veteran right wing
    veteran top 4 RHD
    better/trusted backup goalie

    Hornqvist
    Ceci
    Neuvirth

Roll with that. Shouldn’t cost the future.

  9. hunter1909 says:

Either McLellan isn’t doing what Chiarelli is asking and therefore needs to be fired…

    Or:

Chiarelli isn’t doing what he’s supposed to be doing and therefore needs to be fired…

I honestly didn’t give up until tonight.

Sadly, TMac appears to not be the coach this team needs. He seems to have assistants who despite being useless are joined at the hip to Tmac; therefore they all need to go. Stupid TMac.

In other words, we’re back to the days of: “Who’s going to put the bell on the Cat?” With the fans coming up with all sorts of delightful suggestions, few which will ever happen as the team endlessly languishes etc.

This franchise is flat-out toxic. It’s like the NYR’s without any of the glamour. Just this decaying memory of a rotting corpse of a dynasty that was slated to win 7-10 cups but got broken up due to small town owners getting called out on their bullshit.

  12. dcsj says:

Man. I quit watching after the second. I don’t get it. Some games they look like no one can beat them. Then this.

They just seemed unable to play with authority in any aspect of the game tonight.

Indeed we are. 11 out of 12 years of this shit. I mean, this goes back to pre-Lehman shock, pre iPhone. That must be it. I blame Woodguy’s phone.

    Happy New Year!

Oilers 2017 ended year all dinks too. Haha

2017 we got into playoffs and then had our expected sophmore jinx, bad luck got us eliminated dec 31st

    2018 Baby looking up.

We got Benson, Yama, Bear, Jones on horizon.
Young guns of Puju, Nurse, Khaira trending up
We got 3 epic Cs for years to come
We can restock in draft and lottery chance for Dahlin
    McDavid is ours!
If we learn from vegas maybe we can find great value castaways who dont have opportunity.
Vegas will have sophmore slump next year take advantage of them. Haha

This year has been fun although next year is a blank canvas.

    For oilers and ourselves.

MacT had us on the brink of playoffs most seasons, we were at least still in the picture after November. I actually liked him as coach. But his bonehead decision to fire Kreuger and letting Nelson go is part of the reason we’re in this problem.

    Don’t forget Petry.. Glencross.. Norris..

Great eye for talent, ol MacT .. never saw sideburns he didn’t hate..

Just caught the highlights. I am in a partial stupor, but heads need to roll here. What the fuck was that penalty kill. Fire the assistant coaches or TMac or do SOMETHING. This is unacceptable. Way to mail it in, assholes. How badly can a professional sports team underperform. Look at the talent on our roster!!!!

Finally back in Alberta at 230am.

Should be snuggled in bed in 90 minutes for a nice 2.5 hour sleep before the gym (which opens at 7), groceries (store opens at 9) and a few hours of food prep before I can relax and recover.

If only the Oilers had a plan and showed some dedication and consistency.

    Here’s the positive.

    CBJ 0 – Tampa 5
    NYI 1 – Colorado 6
    SJS 0 – Dallas 6

That’s 3 good teams getting embarrassed.

1-0 loss or 5-0 loss, it’s water under the bridge. Still half a season left. Win 30 games and let’s dance.

  61. €v¥£€u§ says:

    OriginalPouzar,

    Welcome Back OP!

I year ya, we got home around 11:30 pm on the 30th. We brought a bunch of things back (such as a year+ supply of Putianese noodles which you can’t find in Canada-think Angel hair pasta, but lighter and melt-in-the-mouth amazing) so we had to do a bunch of unpacking and sorting, got to bed just before 2am. I woke up at 5, but went back to bed and couldn’t get up til 1:00 pm (I struggled to get up for about an hr and a half, lol). I barely slept (maybe 45 minutes cumulatively) coming home on what was essentially a 26 hour journey.

We went to bed at 1:00am this morning and I’ve been up since 5. The wife works in Edmonton and I was going to drive her tomorrow (we are both scheduled to go back in the 3rd) but now she is starting to feel it (she got up at 7:30 am yesterday, she had around 5-6 hrs of z’s on our journey) so she will likely take the rest of the week off. Which is fine, since she hasn’t sorted out where she’ll be staying yet anyway (she broke her lease before we left – we figured she would be able to move into a basement suite, but that won’t be ready for another 3 or so weeks). It is just as well, I am more than happy to have here her, rather than only seeing her on the weekends :).

I hope you have a good first day back into the swing of things, doesn’t seem like you had too much trouble adjusting to the time change going to HK/Macau, did you? Given your workout regimen, it should be pretty beneficial to counter the jet lag, no? Are you doing more resistance work or are you doing cardio or sprint/HIT kind of workouts or do you change it up?
