G40 2017-18: Kings at Oilers

One of the weirdest stats involving the Oilers this year surrounds the fact the club is 40 games into the season (halfway!) and has played the Pacific Division only six times:

  • Calgary (2-0-0)
  • Arizona (1-0-0)
  • Las Vegas (1-0-0)
  • San Jose (1-0-0)
  • Los Angeles (0-0-0)
  • Anaheim (0-0-0)
  • Vancouver (0-1-0)
  • Overall: 5-1-0
  • (Source)

Obviously the Oilers aren’t going to win five out of every six games against this bunch, but there are a pile of four-point games on the way in the season’s second half. Can the Oilers win three of five? Will that be enough?

COLD JANUARY, YEAR OVER YEAR

  • January 2016: 4-5-2, goal differential -5
  • January 2017: 9-4-1, goal differential +8
  • January 2018: 0-0-0, goal differential nil

G1 January 2016 was a 4-3 shootout victory over the Arizona Coyotes, last year a 3-1 loss to Columbus. It’s a good bet, based on the current team’s established levels of ability, Edmonton will come in with a record somewhere between 2016 and 2017 January.

AFTER 40, YEAR OVER YEAR

  • Oilers 15-16: 15-21-3, goal differential -24 (33 points)
  • Oilers 16-17: 19-13-7, goal differential +8 (45 points)
  • Oilers 17-18: 17-19-3, goal differential -11 (37 points)

G40 was a 4-3 shootout victory over the Arizona Coyotes and last year it was a 4-3 win over the Boston Bruins. A win tonight and on Thursday would give Edmonton 41 points in 41 games.

WHAT TO EXPECT FROM JANUARY

  • At home to: Los Angeles, Anaheim (Expected 0-1-1) (Actual 0-0-0)
  • On the road to: Dallas, Chicago, Nashville, Arizona, Vegas (Expected 2-2-1) (Actual 0-0-0)
  • At home to: Vancouver, Buffalo, Calgary (Expected 2-1-0) (Actual 0-0-0)
  • Overall expected result: 4-4-2, 10 points in 10 games
  • Current results: 0-0-0

BLEEDING OUT

The Oilers brought things to January and stayed within spitting distance (seven back of No. 8 Anaheim, with a game in hand) but this race will be over unless Edmonton can post (something like) a 14-point January. The math doesn’t rhyme. Oilers went 6-2-0 but needed to get more than one point from the post-Christmas run. Even four points (two wins) would have gotten the team to four points behind the Ducks, and within one of Colorado. As it is, there are four teams between Edmonton and Anaheim.

TRADE DEADLINE

For much of this season, we’ve been discussing acquisitions. We know the list (sniper, checking forward who can PK, No. 2 RHD to replace Jeff Petry) but it’s probably fair to say the organization will soon be looking toward next season. The list remains the same but the solutions become long term, which increases the pool of talent. We’ll be talking about targets for future roles in the coming days, with Patrick Maroon, Mark Letestu and others as the possible assets out.

LOWDOWN WITH LOWETIDE

We’re back, baby! Starting at 10 this morning, TSN1260, we’ll use all the words and try to make sure they arrive in the right order. Scheduled to appear:

  • Jonathan Willis, The Athletic. Slepyshev and Caggiula, what’s next?
  • Kent Wilson, The Athletic. A strong farm club is helping the Flames stay in the hunt.
  • Scott Cullen, TSN. NFL playoffs, Canada’s NHL teams and who makes the playoffs.
  • Mike Rodak, ESPN. The Bills are in!

10-1260 text, @Lowetide on twitter. See you on the radio!

  1. OriginalPouzar says:

If my research is correct, that is Maroon’s 14th penalty and he has drawn 3.

He has really really made it tough for the Oilers to win this game or even get it to OT.

    Unacceptable.

Should get 2 game suspension (at least).

  2. Soup Fascist says:

Ok sure call the major. No instigator on Forbert? McDavid gets whacked hard coming across the blue line – zippo. RNH gets the feet pulled out from under him by Kopitar. Oh well.

I know the refs are not the reason the Oil are playing like Schmidt, but wow they always seem to get the poopy end of the stick.

  3. NYC-Back-to-Tokyo Oil (Gentleman Backpacker) says:

    Decidedly Skeptical Fan,

Some of those moves (Petry, for example) happened before Chia arrived. The Perron deal, too, which was a worthy return. I mean, it was essentially Perron for what turned into Barzal/Connor/etc.

So, I guess I am not entirely sure what you are trying to say.

  4. LMHF#1 says:

NYC-Back-to-Tokyo Oil (Gentleman Backpacker): You don’t think that was worth a major?

Speaking to the fact that the calls don’t seem to come in reverse.

  5. NYC-Back-to-Tokyo Oil (Gentleman Backpacker) says:

LMHF#1: Speaking to the fact that the calls don’t seem to come in reverse.

    Ah. Gotcha.

  6. Confused says:

Pretty much controlled by the Kings, now a huge kill.

Anyone know if Zack is injured? Currently unrecognizable.

  7. OilClog says:

With 29 not driving his own line with any positive effect, the Hall trade is really beating home the fact even with Mcdavid, there’s no dynasty coming.

  8. hunter1909 says:

Lowetide: I deleted your post because you are becoming abusive. I can’t allow that to happen. Please and thanks.

No worries. I get carried away at times.

Saw Zack…I think he trimmed his beard. That’s all I got

  10. OriginalPouzar says:

Stuart Skinner with a shutout tonight (20 shots).

  11. Decidedly Skeptical Fan says:

    NYC-Back-to-Tokyo Oil (Gentleman Backpacker),

GM’s have been at least treading water for the most part, all things considered. Coaching has been a bit of a problem for quite a while. It’s been so long I’m not sure we know what a good coaching staff looks like.

  12. BeerMe says:

Unsurprising. He’s paid to be a professional asshole. except he’s sinking his own team.

    Never liked the player.

    Trump supporter for the kicker

  13. OriginalPouzar says:

    OilClog:

He’s 7th in the league in even strength points/game with middling wingers.

He’s been close to elite at evens – his issue has been total lack of PP production.

  14. Lowetide says:

hunter1909: No worries. I get carried away at times.

    Me too. We love you.

  15. russ99 says:

Draisaitl is 22, let’s not think he can’t do that yet.

  16. StixMalone says:

If Doughty comes back in 3 rd period is a suspension still going to come?

  17. OriginalPouzar says:

    StixMalone:
If Doughty comes back in 3 rd period is a suspension still going to come?

It should – it was a horribly dirty play.

  18. BONE207 says:

So our record being down going into the 3rd is….0 wins?
Add a 5 min PK at home where we are at 53%…so we’re saying there’s a chance?

  19. BeerMe says:

    Teetering on the cliff now

  20. Munny says:

Pujo is apparently bottom of the PK chart.

I think he has the skills.

  21. OmJo says:

    hunter1909:
“We can lose Taylor Hall and that loser Eberle, easy.

We can replace them with Patrick Maroon and Cammilari might be available as soon as he clears waivers”.

Hall is (once again) tied for 5th in LW scoring, Eberle tied for 17th in RW scoring.

No question he’s an elite LW in this league.

By contrast, Lucic is 26th in LW scoring. Mind you, I’m not saying that’s a bad thing – he’s one of the top 30 LW in the league (based on points).

But he’s no Taylor Hall replacement.

Strome is tied for 42nd in RW scoring. Draisaitl would be tied for 12th, so there’s that.

  22. OmJo says:

    BONE207:
So our record being down going into the 3rd is….0 wins?
Add a 5 min PK at home where we are at 53%…so we’re saying there’s a chance?

I won’t be surprised if they kill off the penalty.

They do that and there’s a chance to at least get it to OT.

  23. Munny says:

Gaborik is so good at that against the grain snap shot

  24. OmJo says:

OmJo: I won’t be surprised if they kill off the penalty.

They do that and there’s a chance to at least get it to OT.

    Well fuck me.

  25. OriginalPouzar says:

So, Maroon essentially costs the Oilers this game and probably knocks Doughty out of the game on THU against the flames, who the Oilers is chasing.

    What a brutal play.

  26. BeerMe says:

    And there we fall

  27. BONE207 says:

OmJo: I won’t be surprised if they kill off the penalty.

They do that and there’s a chance to at least get it to OT.

    How now brown cow?

  28. LMHF#1 says:

Doughty back. That was a bent nose/hurt mouth reaction.

If Maroon wanted to nuke him he would’ve followed through.

  29. OilClog says:

OriginalPouzar: He’s 7th in the league in even strength points/game with middling wingers.

He’s been close to elite at evens – his issue has been total lack of PP production.

So it’s a coaching thing lol

  30. OmJo says:

    BONE207: How now brown cow?

Um… well… I meant they’ll kill the second half of the penalty.

  31. StixMalone says:

    Game over pk still sucks

  32. LMHF#1 says:

This PK is the biggest damn joke.

  33. hags9k says:

    This team has no soul.

  34. Gerta Rauss says:

    And that’ll do it

  35. OmJo says:

OmJo: Um… well… I meant they’ll kill the second half of the penalty.

    Wtf Oilers?

Um… the Kings aren’t going to lose this game 2-10?

  36. OilClog says:

    OriginalPouzar:
So, Maroon essentially costs the Oilers this game and probably knocks Doughty out of the game on THU against the flames, who the Oilers is chasing.

    What a brutal play.

Have the team scored a goal yet? One players filthy play doesn’t decide a entire game!

Doughty is in fact back.. elbow below chin.,,

And wooooooooo no meaningful games in April.

  37. Craig Ludwig's Shinpad says:

Howty Doody back on the PP. Somebuddy shud nee him.

  38. Munny says:

Two lucky bounces, two more goals.

  39. russ99 says:

Over. I’m going to bed. Enough of this.

Oilers are allowing passes through the middle of the ice uncontested on this PK.

  41. Gerta Rauss says:

    And 4-0

    man

  42. BeerMe says:

Now that the season is sewered, might as well tank. Better draft position and we’re more likely to rid ourselves of the current coaching staff quickly.

Fuck this franchise and the hell they put us through.

Fire the coaching staff into the sun.

Chia gets one last chance with a new HC.

    This team has no soul.

They sold it for the playoff run last year.

  44. LMHF#1 says:

    Fire. The. Coach.

  45. russ99 says:

Can we fire Johnson for this PK alone?

  46. BeerMe says:

    Thanks Maroon.

  47. deardylan says:

Big guys not ready to play after Christmas or new years. They need Lucic, Maroon, Kassian, Jujhar on treadmill all summer long. #PK&PPnightmarestats

  48. OilClog says:

Maroons 5min penalty may of earned some coaches their walking papers, he’s doing the dirty work folks.

  49. SK Oiler Fan says:

    PK setting records.
Letestu did f all there. Looked like a 5 on 3
Also, Wayne and Dustin Brown should never be mentioned in the same sentence

  50. LMHF#1 says:

    BeerMe,

They were never winning this game.

  51. OriginalPouzar says:

I’ve got my brother-in-law living with us as he broke up with his long-term g/f a few weeks ago.

A few minutes ago, I mentioned to him that it would be a success if we held the Kings to 2 goals on the major – no success!

  52. Munny says:

Stunned they didn’t put it into their own open net.

  53. OmJo says:

This isn’t even funny anymore, it’s just sad.

  54. Gerta Rauss says:

    haha…

    Nuge

They’re just fucking with us now

Watching on mute from the pub. Am I the only one hoping the powerplay conversion is better than 1/1 to create some shock/shakeup?

  56. StixMalone says:

At least get a goal and break the shutout. 2 games without a goal sucks bad

  57. OriginalPouzar says:

Lets see if Connor can get on the scoresheet and not go pointless for 3 straight games for the first time in his career.

  58. Réal Goudenyéu says:

Agreed. The fact that a coach running the pk can still have a job at this point is indefensible.

  59. OilClog says:

Mcdavid and Hopkins on the same line! Thank you 2018

  60. OriginalPouzar says:

Hey – Nuge on the 1st unit – finally!

  61. OmJo says:

We still haven’t seen Nuge and McDavid together for any significant amount of time this season.

    Finally!

  62. Shane says:

    Nuge and McDavid woohooooo!

  63. OmJo says:

I think the Kings kill this penalty.

  64. OilClog says:

    Make Nuge the coach

  65. OmJo says:

If they kill this penalty I swear to God…

  66. BeerMe says:

When efforts like this are put on display, I experience this switch mentally where i suddenly want my team to lose 10-0. Anyone else? Some might say it makes me a bad fan but I really regain some satisfaction in seeing justice served when pathetic efforts are given.

  70. SayItAin'tSo, Gretz, SayItAin'tSo! says:

    hags9k,

    Penalty kill

  71. hags9k says:

    BeerMe,

They played ok until the 1st GA. Effort and desperation needs to be cranked way up the first 10 minutes at home. You have to get the early goals at home. Have to.

  72. OilClog says:

After the decade sandwich between the two runs… all you can really do is laugh. They probably run the table in Feb with Nuge as the head coach and fall 3pts short for the mid summer dance.

It’s all hilarious, Cleveland on ice. In 5 years Mcdavid will be strung out looking for employment in the USHL.

  73. Soup Fascist says:

When the home PK gets below 50% somebody has to get fired, no?

Seriously SKID whoever is responsible for special teams.

  74. OriginalPouzar says:

Two weeks ago, the entire fan base (for the most part) is all over the coach for waiting so line to go with the 3 center set.

Now, we are back to vitriol for not having one of the 3 centers on the wing.

  75. StixMalone says:

    At least they’re still trying….

  76. BONE207 says:

OmJo: The perks of being a Tier II fan.

Another game or 2 like these past couple, I’ll be a tier 3 or 4 fan.

    Tier 3…highlights only
    Tier 4…Lowetidians only….wait…what did I say???

  77. OmJo says:

    Have to finish those chances…

  78. Whatif says:

After watching the game tonight I am totally convinced that the Oilers poor season stems from their defense corps not being good enough.

They are not good enough at defending and constantly get out muscled for the puck.

They do not skate well enough as a group to get back and retrieve pucks or be maneuverable enough to keep up with shifty forwards.

But most of all they are not good enough passers and smart enough to transition the puck to the forwards quickly enough or on a consistent basis.

The D men are constantly resetting behind their net or making 2, 3 or 4 passes back and forth giving their opponents to set their defensive alignment for the Oilers attacking forwards. Not even McDavid, with all his wizardry, can buck those odds nigh after night and expect to win.

  79. SayItAin'tSo, Gretz, SayItAin'tSo! says:

    hags9k,

You’re right. They played fine for 40 minutes really and then collapsed via special teams again.

  80. OmJo says:

Darnell keeps that up and he’s going to find himself on the 4th line next game.

  81. OilClog says:

    OriginalPouzar:
Two weeks ago, the entire fan base (for the most part) is all over the coach for waiting so line to go with the 3 center set.

Now, we are back to vitriol for not having one of the 3 centers on the wing.

No we’re all just excited to finally see our boy Nuge get a shot with Jesus! No need for a 3 line set in this blow out. They haven’t scored a goal since last year man

  82. Nailer Yakumoto says:

Season over before Puljujarvi gets a shot at PP1 over Letestu.

  83. BeerMe says:

McDavid gonna go 3 games without a point for the first time in his young career

  84. Munny says:

No way they score in 2018.

  85. Réal Goudenyéu says:

Bold prediction – the oilers don’t score in the next game either.

  86. hags9k says:

    OmJo,

I can’t imagine how season seat holders feel. Such a negative feeling season. It’s like an entire season of playing not to lose, scared to make mistakes.

When is the last time we saw the Oilers enjoying hockey or smiling out there? Never score a big goal and react like the game is fun. They are all business all the time. Loosey goosey does not live here.

  87. Confused says:

    We are at home.

Other teams at home come out with jump, we come out with nothing.

  88. SK Oiler Fan says:

Didn’t Ottawa swap their special teams coaches the other day?
Maybe swap woodcroft and the guy playing the music?

  89. StixMalone says:

Next up is Anaheim. Getzlaf is back…..

  90. SayItAin'tSo, Gretz, SayItAin'tSo! says:

    OriginalPouzar,

Ya I’ve noticed that as well, it’s hard to keep track of which move is supposed to be the right one

But again (and it’s been this all season) special teams sunk them tonight.

Sekera and JP had some glorious chances before that 5 min major but man. 3 more goals against on the PK and the 31 million 1PP unit lays another goose egg.

An entire season sunk by special teams

    So much not fun

  91. OilClog says:

Regression to the meat 13pts for Mcdavid next time out.

  92. OmJo says:

    OriginalPouzar:
Two weeks ago, the entire fan base (for the most part) is all over the coach for waiting so line to go with the 3 center set.

Now, we are back to vitriol for not having one of the 3 centers on the wing.

I’ve wanted Nuge on PP1 for a while now. Unicorns only works when the average wingers we have play above average – not really sustainable. If we can get more consistent wingers it can work like intended.

  93. NYC-Back-to-Tokyo Oil (Gentleman Backpacker) says:

    OriginalPouzar:

Let’s hope your jinxing skills aren’t THAT good.

  94. Soup Fascist says:

Outscored 9-0 – and counting – in two vital games. Can someone check this organization for a pulse? Wow – never thought I would say this but I am almost to the point of not caring anymore. But then I would be like the Oilers players, coaches and managers.

    Quite a quandary.

  95. BeerMe says:

Kesler hatty next game. McDavid will make 10 10-bell passes to wingers who roof it high and wide.

  96. OmJo says:

    hags9k:
    OmJo,

It wreaks of the DoD atmosphere… the only difference is we have McDavid this time. I expect we’ll hear more boos at the end of this game.

  97. NYC-Back-to-Tokyo Oil (Gentleman Backpacker) says:

Team is fragile. They had chances early. Again, they needed to cash. They didn’t, and then they have a brainfart pinch that costs them an odd-man rush, let one in and things fall apart.

Walking on eggshells you can’t win games in the NHL.

Somehow, some way, they need to get that swagger back. Problem is we are at a loss to figure out how.

  98. SayItAin'tSo, Gretz, SayItAin'tSo! says:

    NYC-Back-to-Tokyo Oil (Gentleman Backpacker),

Well said and this isn’t the first such stretch this season.

And I think that’s the most concerning part

  99. NYC-Back-to-Tokyo Oil (Gentleman Backpacker) says:

Well, this is probably the last time NBCSN shows the Oilers on a nationally televised game in the US again. They resisted for 2 years of the McDavid era and…oops!

  100. Thinker says:

    Fallin’ for Dahlin.

  101. Shane says:

Ramenda says: “Doughtys concussion worries are nothing because he’s out there playing and made a good defensive play”

Isn’t this the type of thinking we’re trying to get away from?

  102. Munny says:

    SK Oiler Fan:
Didn’t Ottawa swap their special teams coaches the other day?
Maybe swap woodcroft and the guy playing the music?

Dunno about the Sens. Colorado did for sure.

  103. Mr. D. says:

Fuck am I glad we have puck movers on defense.

  104. OmJo says:

General Disappointment created this mess. TMac hasn’t made it any better, but this is what happens when you bleed as much talent as he has in trades. A team with no depth.

We have some promising wingers in the system. So there’s something to look forward to. And the further development of Khaira and Puljujarvi. But none of that is going to help us this year, in the final year of McDavid’s ELC.

  105. HenryDrix says:

Really thought our days as the league laughing stock were over. I was wrong.

  106. StixMalone says:

They should have guest coaches for the rest of the season. You know like the guest minor hockey player at every game. Only thing is guest coach actually gets to coach for the entire game. I don’t think the results would be any worse. Who knows maybe it’s like a talent search show. You can call it Coaching with the Stars or something….

  107. Chelios is a Dinosaur says:

  108. Hendo’s Crushed Cup says:

Calling it now, Talbot to leak in a stinker within first 6 minutes of 2nd period…I smell it from Surrey!

    Yo buds,

Hoo hoo, that’s not wut yer smellin there

Been thru Surrey, now I was buried in a hockeybag that normally smells like ballsacksweat, but still even with no nose, I knows

I tells ya, I am some kinda fortunate that I ain’t got no fucking nose……Hendo sweats like a moose just breathin

  109. Dicky94 says:

    Munny,

You would have to think something happens tomorrow. Won’t hold my breath though.

  110. hags9k says:

Passion. That’s the word I’ve been looking for and what this team lacks. I don’t think their mental approach is correct. Even when things go well, they are like hockey robots.

Good night gang, hang in there.

  111. Craig Ludwig's Shinpad says:

    Hendo’s Crushed Cup,

I’ve been steadfast in my support for TMac & Company but after this, there NEEDS to be a change. Tippett? Sutter? Krueger?
And I understand the narrative, Hall this, Eberle that, but I’m sticking to my guns, this is a problem that even those two lads couldn’t have fixed even if they were on the team. And I’ll die on my sword, I MUCH prefer Larsson over Hall, any day of the week. But, this team is in need of a major trade. I mean an absolute, shattering of personnel. Klefbom, Talbot, Drai… put some fear into the room. Nothing safe.

I’ll even go as far to say that the first Jets game and the Hawks game they were in it to win it (cliche of the day).

Last two not so much and it comes back to the horrid special teams

The COO’s response – “not sure. If I knew I would have done it a month ago”.

Oh yeah, also that COO makes $3MM a year.

    Sure. That shit would fly.

    Seriously – FU, Todd.

  171. NYC-Back-to-Tokyo Oil (Gentleman Backpacker) says:

It doesn’t explain the PK at all and that is obviously the most glaring issue, but…

the Hall trade was at least somewhat justifiable, right. Larsson is a fine hockey player, and the cap space was used to get Lucic. Lucic + Larsson is > Hall, even though Hall has the most value (imo, but that’s not the point of my post).

Eberle for Strome and cap space, though…the cap space still remains and Ryan Strome is a pretty ineffective hockey player. Eberle has almost as many goals as Strome has points and is on pace for his usual 25-30 goals. Yeah he is being zoomed by Barzal, but the guy was never a driver–he was a Joey Mullen-lite type complementary player who was not ever going to be good defensively but could cash when given a chance. We all tend to value certain things like heart, hustle, grit and 2-way acumen a lot and tend to discount the floater scorer types, until we don’t have one. But Eberle was a bounce-back candidate. It’s too bad he is bouncing back somewhere else.

So, where do we find someone who can shoot? Pulju is on his way but still green. Imagine how the game would have turned had he scored on that glorious chance late in the 2nd. Tie game, Maroon takes no penalty, Oilers have a chance. Alas the breaks have not been going our way this year.
Yamamoto is still a big ? and at least 2 years away, same for Benson…so…

  172. JimmyV1965 says:

    Whatif:

+1000. Our wingers are meh, but they look like all stars compared to our dmen. They can’t transition out of the dzone for love or money.

  173. Hockey Project says:

This staff has forgotten more about coaching than I will ever know, but they make some decisions which seem odd from where I sit. I obviously am forced to admit that I don’t exactly have a great view of the room, practice, talks, etc, from my couch…

I don’t know… Something feels wrong in this lost year. They out-played their possession game a bit, but nothing that should have results snap back so far. It’s the same staff, and most of the same players, but they went from having an average PK to one that’s one of the very very worst over the span of my life. Did they materially change anything about how they run it? It doesn’t seem that way, but it’s being picked apart at will by the opposition, no matter how good or bad their own PP is.

    Really disheartening stuff.

EDIT – Ouch. “If I knew, I would have fixed it a month ago” sounds like the statement of somebody who is just perplexed and frustrated.

Our GM has won a Stanley Cup before, our coach has had many seasons of winning, we have McDavid who could win a game by himself, we have big strong team, we have great skilled young players getting stronger this year, we have confidence from getting into playoffs last year and winning one round, we win 4 straight dominating other teams… and yet we lose all our gains straight after Christmas and go into full out tank mode?

And we are -17 and out of the playoffs by New Years eve.

I submit that a lot of people stuck around for the new building and the promise of a better team. The novelty of the building will fade and folks won’t be paying a premium to watch this crap.

I think the talent is there. A bit young but it sure looks to be there on paper when compared to other rosters. Maybe the answer is as simple as the league is taking the new and improved Oilers more seriously this year and has had an off-season to make adjustments. Ball back in our court and we are having difficulty figuring out how to return it. Good teams figure this out, right?

  184. Psyche says:

    Soup Fascist,

This team makes money for the owner win or lose. The fans will keep paying the premium prices. Societies have a need to display status by spending money on shiny things.

    A #4 D, right-handed, preferably the puck-moving type over the gritensity type
    A top 6 RW
A replacement for Maroon or Maroon for a reasonable deal.

I’m not going to defend the trade as another piece should have come back (ELC contract or pick) but I don’t agree that t”he cap space wasn’t used”.

Yes, it “wasn’t used” for this season but it was absolutely used for the future (unfortunately on Kris Russell) – we have no additional cap space starting next season and, without the $3.5M cap savings, the cap future would be more dire for next season and Nuge would almost certainly be traded.

Its tough to sign material players to short term contracts – that cap space could only be “used” on a one-year contract and that’s tough to do.

The plan, I’m sure, was to acquire that one-year contract mid-season, a pending UFA contract, to bolster for the playoff run.

    Unfortunately, we never got there.

The Russell signing, hours after the Strome trade, was the use of the cap space – a poor use for multiple reasons including it preventing management from upgrading at D over the next 3-4 years.
