G44 2017-18 Oilers at Predators

During Peter Chiarelli’s conversation with Ryan Rishaug yesterday, one of (several) interesting subjects discussed was the trade deadline.

  • Peter Chiarelli: “I’m going to wait a little bit, we’ve got our pro meetings coming up next week. We’ve got a few games left here before that, and then we’ll have to make a decision. If we’re not significantly back to where we should be in that time, there is an element of margins here, we’ll have to make that decision in a week’s time.”

It’s over. The pro meetings will no doubt cover subjects like “finding the next Patrick Maroon” and “does Cody Franson have trade value?” with trading out beginning as early as the All-Star break.

 RED RUM, YEAR OVER YEAR

  • January 2016: 2-2-0, goal differential -1 (4 points)
  • January 2017: 2-2-0, goal differential -2 (4 points)
  • January 2018: 1-3-0, goal differential -12 (2 points)

G5 January in 2015-16 was a 4-3 overtime loss to the Arizona Coyotes (OEL) and last year was a 5-3 loss to the San Jose Sharks. The Oilers are getting absolutely pounded in January 2018 and Nashville is a damn good team. This could get ugly.

 AFTER 44, YEAR OVER YEAR

  • Oilers 15-16: 17-23-3, goal differential -25 (37 points)
  • Oilers 16-17: 21-15-7, goal differential +6 (49 points)
  • Oilers 17-18: 18-22-3, goal differential -23 (39 points)
G44 15-16 was a 4-3 overtime loss to Arizona as above, last year it was 3-2 Edmonton over New Jersey. The Oilers were 0-2-1 last season against Nashville, 0-1 (-4 GD) this season. Have a backup plan tonight, even if it’s just Jeopardy reruns.

WHAT TO EXPECT FROM JANUARY

  • At home to: Los Angeles, Anaheim (Expected 0-1-1) (Actual 1-1-0)
  • On the road to: Dallas, Chicago, Nashville, Arizona, Vegas (Expected 2-2-1) (Actual 0-2-0)
  • At home to: Vancouver, Buffalo, Calgary (Expected 2-1-0) (Actual 0-0-0)
  • Overall expected result: 4-4-2, 10 points in 10 games
  • Current results: 1-3-0, two points in four games

At this point, there’s no use predicting when the Oilers will win because they’re beating themselves. If they show up tonight, the club could win. If the Preds get the first goal, and then another, find a comedy and check back at 15 minute intervals.

I’d put in a claim, and look at dealing someone at the deadline. Defensemen always have ridiculous value at the trade deadline and we’re seven weeks from it. Do the Oilers have room? Yes.

50-MAN LIST

  • Edmonton has room for one more (via CapFriendly)
  • Deadline exits might include Patrick Maroon, Mark Letestu, Mike Cammalleri, Ryan Strome, Brandon Davidson. Adding Cody Franson, having him play well in a showcase role  (some power-play time) and then dealing at the deadline is a reasonable idea.

It feels like change is in the air but things will have to be finessed a little. When a general manager is in trouble, you’ll often see a bizarre trade to save the day, we haven’t seen that from Peter Chiarelli. He didn’t see a palace coup coming last time, so maybe history is about to repeat.

There’s no strong reason to remove Chiarelli today, beyond offering a sacrifice to the fans (that does have a role in this, in my opinion). If you are actively hoping for a Chiarelli firing, this tweet may indicate the attempted coup has failed for now.

In each of the summers of his regime, PC has made a major trade that bled talent. That is now the pressure point for the fanbase, but the old bulls in management would have signed off on the Reinhart, Hall and Eberle deals.

That’s a concern that we should address, in my opinion. The entirety of Oilers Nation is focused on getting rid of Chiarelli, while not worrying much at all about the powers behind the overthrow and the new king.

There’s every chance Chiarelli’s firing will be followed by a honeymoon period and then a grand summer of ‘name’ acquisitions. That isn’t what these Edmonton Oilers need, ladies and men. The club needs astute procurement in a few places and it needs that procurement right damned now. Cody Franson, Anthony Duclair, these are players who are either available or rumored to be available. Maybe they don’t work out, but you have 40 games of audition in front of you.

I’m not telling you to lay off Peter Chiarelli, he has created his own reality. I would ask you spend a moment contemplating his replacement and how much experience that man (or those men) have in the job. The Oilers don’t need Sam Pollock or Glen Sather but an intelligent, mature and measured approach is required. All is not lost, but it could be, and if the job was easy it would pay minimum wage. Beware the future created when men who know not what they are doing are given great responsibility. With that in mind, I believe Kevin Lowe is the best available from the front office but I think the next general manager is going to be the most famous former hockey player on the planet. I expect it comes in the next seven days, or mid-April.

Darnell covers a lot of ground over the course of a shift. His speed and mobility are a joy to watch.

  2. OriginalPouzar says:

Hebig was kept off the ice at practice today – likely to be traded before the deadline.

  3. russ99 says:

Nice shift. Strome keeps playing like that we may have a keeper.

  4. OriginalPouzar says:

    Munny:
Darnell covers a lot of ground over the course ofa shift. His speed and mobility are a joy to watch.

He reminds me of Scott Niedermayer and and young Jay Bo in that regard.

  5. OriginalPouzar says:

    russ99:
Nice shift. Strome keeps playing like that we may have a keeper.

He’s had some really nice flashes this year but no consistency.

  6. Munny says:

Sweet ass shift from Canada Drai

  7. OriginalPouzar says:

Oilers coming in waves right now – winning lots of battles and creating chances.

    Playing great.

  8. Munny says:

Russell was slap passing but the F failed to read it.

Same with the Nuge wrap around… no read, someone should have been going to the slot when he started his move

  9. russ99 says:

Our offense is actually working. What the heck. Where has this been?

  10. Munny says:

Apt replay of Benning after an earlier disparagement.

  11. StixMalone says:

They are happy cause they’re going golfing tomorrow with Katz…..

  12. Spooky Lynx says:

    Munny:
Russell was slap passing but the F failed to read it.

I feel like the onus is on the puck carrier (Russell) to have read the play and realize there is no one ready to accept the pass.

  13. StixMalone says:

    Much better period!

  14. Gerta Rauss says:

best period by the club since prior to Christmas for what that’s worth

  15. russ99 says:

    Outstanding period.

Next goal is huge for this group’s psyche. Hope they get rewarded for their hard work.

  16. OilClog says:

If this lost season can give back anything positive hopefully it’s enough leverage to ask all NMC’s for their list of teams. Looking mostly at you 27, smart org would figure out how to keep Pat at a lesser price first.

Even the towel guy is masked in gloom and despair lol

  17. frjohnk says:

    Gerta Rauss:
best period by the club since prior to Christmas for what that’s worth

    Ukrainian
    Or English

  18. Munny says:

Spooky Lynx: I feel like the onus is on the puck carrier (Russell) to have read the play and realize there is no one ready to accept the pass.

I’m not assigning blame to either. I was posting in anticipation of a “what the heck was Rusty doing?” comment. Stuff like that has to be tried now and then. Sometimes it works; one is often guessing on the other party’s readiness or awareness.

  19. Confused says:

Strome looks so much better at center compared to wing, it is like night and day.

Let’s hope he can keep it going

  20. Pouzar says:

Good period but what exactly are Caggiula and Letestu good at?

  21. OmJo says:

    Monahan is kinda good.

  22. Spooky Lynx says:

    Munny,

    Fair play.

  23. OmJo says:

    Pouzar:
Good period but what exactly are Caggiula and Letestu good at?

    Looking busy.

Seriously though, this team needed that period. Win or lose, if they keep that up in the third its a big step forward.

  24. NYC-Back-to-Tokyo Oil (Gentleman Backpacker) says:

Good to see the push back and the heart.

But as Russ and others have said, they need a reward or its right back into purgatory again.

This team has a problem scoring goals again. Remember earlier in the season it was an issue–no secondary scoring.

The shooting percentage by the team was awful and we said PDO would see it bounce back a bit, but that you can’t ignore the problem.

We then went on a scoring streak and many people forgot this lesson and said: secondary scoring is not a problem, it was all just the PDO. But most of us knew better, right?

    We are now on
4 goals scored in the last 17 periods of play. The team is scoring 0.67 goals per game in the past almost 6 games.

1 goal scored 2-1 SO win
    0 goals scored 0-5 loss
    0 goals scored 0-5 loss
    1 goal scored 1-5 loss
    1 goal scored 1-4 loss
1 goal scored in 2 periods down 1-2

The effort that period was great, but one goal just doesn’t cut it. Gotta find a way to post a crooked number at least.

    Here’s hoping.

  25. Thinker says:

    Pouzar:
Good period but what exactly are Caggiula and Letestu good at?

    Lewinskys I assume

  26. OmJo says:

    NYC-Back-to-Tokyo Oil (Gentleman Backpacker),

I’ll take the effort at this point. Baby steps.

  27. NYC-Back-to-Tokyo Oil (Gentleman Backpacker) says:

    Confused:
Strome looks so much better at center compared to wing, it is like night and day.

Let’s hope he can keep it going

Credit where it’s due, he has not only brought heart today, he is crashing the net, defending his teammates, being physically engaged. If this were the Ryan Strome who came to play every night, I wouldn’t be so hard on him about his lack of scoring.

This is the first time we’ve seen this kind of effort from Strome in a month. Now is that because he prefers playing C? I don’t know. But hopefully he keeps it up.

  28. OmJo says:

Better one-for-one deal than Chiarelli could have done.

    Ba-dum tshhhh.

  29. Dicky94 says:

    Pouzar,

    They’ll score now.

  30. Zelepukin says:

    Pouzar:
Good period but what exactly are Caggiula and Letestu good at?

Letestu is the only guy on the team that can one-time the puck. Just like how Nurse is the only guy that can skate backwards so he plays defence a lot.

Cags makes you feel good like when every 3 games or so, you see a small guy lay a big hit. He is our Rudy.

  31. Confused says:

    NYC-Back-to-Tokyo Oil (Gentleman Backpacker),

    Strange, I know.

But let’s hope he gets a run at C. 2.5M for a 3C is okay.

  32. Pouzar says:

    OmJo: Looking busy.

Seriously though, this team needed that period. Win or lose, if they keep that up in the third its a big step forward.

Excellent period. Lovin JP’s game right now. He looks real good with Nuge.

  33. Spooky Lynx says:

    Thinker: Lewinskys I assume

    Oh dear.

    Oh my.

    Oh heavens.

  34. Confused says:

    Zelepukin,

Absolutely nothing, say it again 🙂

  35. Pouzar says:

Zelepukin: Letestu is the only guy on the team that can one-time the puck.

He’s the only guy who gets a chance to. Like every fucking chance.

  36. Pouzar says:

    Zelepukin: He is our Rudy.

Can Rudy take his buddy Frodo Baggins and head to Mordor then?

  37. Munny says:

    Another egregious non-call

  38. AsiaOil says:

NYC-Back-to-Tokyo Oil (Gentleman Backpacker): Credit where it’s due, he has not only brought heart today, he is crashing the net, defending his teammates, being physically engaged. This is the first time we’ve seen this kind of effort from Strome in a month. Now is that because he prefers playing C? I don’t know. But hopefully he keeps it up.

Like I said yesterday. If Strome commits to the idea of developing into a 3C we may have a player on our hands. But it’s a tough sell for a guy who has always been a top 6 scorer to make that change. He’s a top 6 tweener in my books but could be a really valuable RH 3C with a bit of offense if he put his mind to it and worked on his FO and skating in the off-season (paging Mr Oates). If that worked then it would leave Drai/RNH for 2C and I don’t move RNH for anything less than a solid 2RHD similar to Ellis.

  39. OriginalPouzar says:

    Great defensive play by Lucic.

  40. OriginalPouzar says:

Strome with some great puck skill a few different times this game – best game with the puck I’ve seen from him.

  41. OmJo says:

Need a quick goal because if the Preds decide to sit on this lead we’re in trouble.

  42. flyfish1168 says:

Hartnell’s slash should be reviewable by league and suspension worthy. Match Penalty for intent

  43. Munny says:

Nice try by Nurse, but Rinne knows what he’s going to do the whole way.

    #nooptions

  44. NYC-Back-to-Tokyo Oil (Gentleman Backpacker) says:

    nice hustle from Klef.

    Can’t fault the effort tonight.

  45. OriginalPouzar says:

Doesn’t look like Yamamoto is in the Spokane lineup tonight.

I’ve been trying to find some information on the injury from the slash in the semifinal game but haven’t been able to.

  46. OmJo says:

    OriginalPouzar,

    Appreciate the CHL updates OP

  47. Pouzar says:

I’ve seen it all. A shot to the nuts and the ref looking right at it.

That should be a match penalty. Not even a minor. #BecauseNHL

  48. Munny says:

I fucking hate this Arvidsson line. Gord damn they’re good.

  49. AsiaOil says:

Zero penalties drawn….really. Obvious hooks on a breakaway and spears in the jewels and they just look away. The NHL looks more like the WWF every day.

  50. NYC-Back-to-Tokyo Oil (Gentleman Backpacker) says:

McDavid hooked down behind our own net. Again no call.

Oilers cannot buy a call from the refs tonight.

  51. OriginalPouzar says:

I’d like to see a Nuge to Puljijarvi goal

  52. Munny says:

    Pouzar:
I’ve seen it all. A shot to the nuts and the ref looking right at it.

That should be a match penalty. Not even a minor. #BecauseNHL

Absolutely. And about time you chimed in. Was gonna post “FFS… Pouz did you see that bullshit?”

  53. Munny says:

Khaira looking better tonight after looking a bit tired past couple

  54. OriginalPouzar says:

The refs are denying Oil Country the ability to make jokes relating to declining power plays – how dare they!

  55. OmJo says:

Strome and 51 falling randomly was entertaining

  56. Munny says:

    Thank you Cameron Talbot

  57. OriginalPouzar says:

    Game-saving save by Talbot there.

  58. Munny says:

Watch us get a penalty out of this bullshit

  59. OmJo says:

    Fuck that guy.

  60. flyfish1168 says:

Maybe the refs think they are helping us out by not giving us a PP opportunity.

  61. Spooky Lynx says:

We seem to be anticipating the shots from down low missing the net, and positioning a player to receive the puck on the boards before it rims around and out of the zone. Great to see an adjustment… even if it is after roughly the three-millionths time in the past three years.

  62. OriginalPouzar says:

They need to tie this up – they deserve to be at least tied, if not ahead.

  63. NYC-Back-to-Tokyo Oil (Gentleman Backpacker) says:

Lucic and Nuge with the beatdown. haha

  64. Munny says:

    #6 Francis Charron
    #38 Francois St. Laurent

    Remember these names.

  65. Pouzar says:

Munny: Absolutely. And about time you chimed in. Was gonna post “FFS… Pouz did you see that bullshit?”

Honestly, that might be the most egregious non-call I’ve ever seen. It couldn’t be missed but yet…

  66. Munny says:

    An actual call.

  67. StixMalone says:

    Finally

  68. Pouzar says:

    And they call that…..lol

  69. OmJo says:

    Final-fucking-ly

  70. Spooky Lynx says:

Holy shit! Did y’all just see that?! He actually got a call! Oh happy day!

  71. Lloyd B. says:

That is the intangible that Lucic brings. You don’t get to whack our goalie. Or I’m going to whack you.

Prior to his arrival too many Oilers would let the other team whack away and then skate away.

And don’t worry. Maroon will take care of Hartnell just as soon as this game is out of reach. Or next game or the one after that.

  72. flyfish1168 says:

    Holy $hit I can’t believe it

  73. Munny says:

Of course it would get evened up

  74. OriginalPouzar says:

    @TreenasOil

    More
Wouldn’t be surprised if Todd McLellan has new assistants after the break.

I would be highly surprised if McLellan would stay on as coach if his assistants were let go (presumably forced by management).

I’d be even more surprised if it happens now that Treena has talked about it.

  75. OmJo says:

    Oh for God’s sake….

  76. OmJo says:

This is actually embarrassing. That was 30 seconds killed.

  77. JonyPro says:

Nashville plays some queer hockey to take off time their penalty….very boring

  78. Spooky Lynx says:

Ottawa broke the NHL with that PK nonsense they pulled yesterday (?). I expect the league to come down hard on that strategy for whatever reason.

  79. hags9k says:

Letestu should have let go of his stick as soon as he slashed him, then it’s not a penalty.

  80. OmJo says:

    JonyPro:
Nashville plays some queer hockey to take off time their penalty….very boring

I wish our PK could do something like that.

  81. Munny says:

DO NOT GO DOWN FOR THE BLOCK!

    *whew*

  82. Spooky Lynx says:

    hags9k:
Letestu should have let go of his stick as soon as he slashed him, then it’s not a penalty.

I’m the head of officiating for the NHL and this is completely correct.

  83. Munny says:

    The Test Tube!!

  84. hags9k says:

    YES!

  85. OriginalPouzar says:

    What a play by Strome.

  86. Pouzar says:

    WOW Strome.

  87. JonyPro says:

    OmJo,

I’m not a fan of that kind of plays. It reminds me of soccer too much at the end when all they do is pass in their backend to kill time, so boring and can bite you in the ass some times but Letestu scored so eff Nashville lol

  88. JonyPro says:

Strome has hands like that? First I’ve seen this in Edmonton

  89. Gerta Rauss says:

Strome gets rewarded with an apple on a nice rush

  90. Pouzar says:

Letestu just earned himself a new 3 year deal there.

  91. OriginalPouzar says:

If NSH is wrong on this they get a PIM.

  92. Munny says:

No way we can survive a challenge, right?

  93. StixMalone says:

    Really???

  94. NYC-Back-to-Tokyo Oil (Gentleman Backpacker) says:

Attaboy Ryan Strome. That was a fucking great effort.

  95. OmJo says:

    JonyPro:
    OmJo,

I’m not a fan of that kind of plays. It reminds me of soccer too much at the end when all they do is pass in their backend to kill time, so boring and can bite you in the ass some times but Letestu scored so eff Nashville lol

Yeah boring AF but I mean if you can play keep away while down 1 man, more power to you.

  96. Pouzar says:

    JonyPro:
Strome has hands like that? First I’ve seen this in Edmonton

He looked like Mario on that one. Wow!

  97. OmJo says:

Offside challenge? Was Kassian on the ice 🙊

  98. Spooky Lynx says:

    Offside. Dammit.

  99. Dicky94 says:

    No goal

  100. NYC-Back-to-Tokyo Oil (Gentleman Backpacker) says:

    JonyPro:
Strome has hands like that? First I’ve seen this in Edmonton

This. Where was this skill and the effort all year? Maybe he read this website and got pissed off at me. Ha ha.

  101. StixMalone says:

    It’s a good goal.maybe

  102. hags9k says:

    Khaira offside. Just wow.

  103. Gerta Rauss says:

That looks fine but that doesn’t mean anything in today”s NHL

  104. SayItAin'tSo, Gretz, SayItAin'tSo! says:

    And it’s coming back

  105. OmJo says:

They might call this back. Fuck.

  106. Pouzar says:

    Lube up folks.

  107. Lloyd B. says:

Replays should not be conducted at super slo-mo.

No matter what league it is.

  108. Munny says:

Not a good replay. Our only chance is the fact was called a goal on the ice

  109. StixMalone says:

    Of course

  110. Munny says:

    #becauseOilers

  111. Pescador says:

I just can’t take it anymore

  112. hags9k says:

Strome has looked like a different player tonight.

  113. OmJo says:

    Ugh.

  114. Gerta Rauss says:

    wow

  115. Confused says:

    Utter crap

  116. Pouzar says:

Everything wrong with the NHL in full view tonight.

    What a fucking joke.

  117. flyfish1168 says:

    Pouzar:
Everything wrong with the NHL in full view tonight.

    What a fucking joke.

    +1

  118. JonyPro says:

    OmJo,

They were technically even strength at that point. But God that video coach who saw that is good

  119. OmJo says:

This team has to rally and get angry, get this one back.

  120. OmJo says:

    JonyPro:
    OmJo,

They were technically even strength at that point. But God that video coach who saw that is good

My bad, did you mean in general while PKing or when on a delayed penalty?

  121. russ99 says:

    Absolute horseshit.

I’ll help pay McLellan’s fine tonight. He has to let loose on this bullshit.

  122. Spooky Lynx says:

    Pouzar:
Everything wrong with the NHL in full view tonight.

    What a fucking joke.

Now we just need a shootout.

  123. Crazy Pedestrian says:

    OmJo:
This team has to rally and get angry, get this one back.

    They won’t, it’s the oilers…

  124. NYC-Back-to-Tokyo Oil (Gentleman Backpacker) says:

Well, the offside challenge just needs to go away. It’s been a disaster for the NHL.

This just isn’t the Oilers’ year. Nothing goes right. It’s like there is a voodoo doll out there (or my Devil theory).

But, the effort has been very good tonight throughout the lineup.

Strome has played his best game as an Oiler and has rightfully shut me up (and my criticisms). If he can play like this every game, we might have a 3rd line after all.

  125. Munny says:

Might’ve been the goal of the year if he had scored

  126. Zelepukin says:

    Pouzar:
Everything wrong with the NHL in full view tonight.

    What a fucking joke.

Don’t worry, next GM meeting Chia is gonna push hard for a new column to be added to the stats, Moral Victories. We’ll dominate it.

  127. StixMalone says:

They deserve a point let’s go

  128. JonyPro says:

    OmJo,

I was talking about that delayed penalty.

  129. Surly says:

Best part of the replay…there are six Predators on the ice. Guy jumped early to engage in the back check well before the D was off.

At this point…who cares I suppose.

  130. Mike Wazowski says:

FFS. Khaira’s back skate is outside the blue line. What does it matter that it’s a quarter inch off the friggin’ ice?!

  131. Spooky Lynx says:

I love Connor McDavid with all my heart and soul.

    What a player.

  132. OmJo says:

The Preds seem afraid to try and stop McDavid when he goes off like that.

  133. StixMalone says:

    Mike Wazowski:
FFS. Khaira’s back skate is outside the blue line. What does it matter that it’s a quarter inch off the friggin’ ice?!

Stupid nit pick of a rule

  134. JonyPro says:

Oilers need to realize if you’re down a goal at any point of the game you need to play like this and remain hungry for goals after evening it up or leading.

  135. Professor Q says:

Sigh. Of course the refs have a greater impact when the Oilers play.

    Poor Letestu.

  136. OmJo says:

    JonyPro:
    OmJo,

I was talking about that delayed penalty.

Yeah sorry for the confusion. I just meant in general while PKing.

Didn’t realize the Sens did the same thing yesterday.

But if you’re gonna lose, at least lose in an entertaining way.

    Well I can’t complain, now can I?

    1. McDavid scored.
    2. A big fuck you to NHL referees.
    3. We didn’t give up 5 goals.
    4. Seriously, fuck these refs forever.
    5. We still have McDavid.

  158. NYC-Back-to-Tokyo Oil (Gentleman Backpacker) says:

Seriously, someone tell TMac we’ll do a GoFundMe for his fine so just rip the refs a new one tonight post-game. Needs to happen. (Well, he makes more than all of us (or likely most of us) so he can pay his own fine, but still).

Oh, I agree. Easily the best game he has played as an Oiler. Looked like a completely different player tonight. Maybe he heard we were saying he shouldn’t be qualified. Ha ha. More please, Ryan. Great game.

  171. Dominoiler says:

Just caught the last 10 minutes, but watched a replay of the 2nd goal against.. would someone be willing to explain to me why Darnell, a great skater, we all know, gave up the blueline so easily?.. he was backed off 10-15 get by my guess, with no that of a pass past him..

I didn’t play organised hockey as a kid so i don’t have an intuitive understanding with this aspect of the game..

    Thanks in advance

  172. Munny says:

NYC-Back-to-Tokyo Oil (Gentleman Backpacker): Right-handed shot would not have reached that pass. It was there for the taking, Looch just needed to be fraction of a second quicker.

He was gliding. He wasn’t expecting the pass to be that far in front of him, or he misread it’s trajectory and didn’t reach enough for it. It went off the bottom of his blade. Wouldn’t have taken much more to get wood on it.

  173. digger50 says:

Numb nuts Remenda wrong again. He is so overfocused in the back leg on the offside. So it’s up, now look at the heel of the leading skate. And look across the puck is across or almost across the line, but you can’t tell for certain because it’s hidden by the stick. Reverse angle, you can see the puck but not all the way across to the heel of the front skate.

Focused on wrong thing again, just like the dam Kessler interference.

When in doubt call on the ice stands.

  174. OmJo says:

    Dicky94:
    OmJo,

More often than not the play dies on his stick. At this point in his career he isn’t the player you put out there when you need a goal with the goalie pulled.

    OmJo,

I was saying instead of Lucic but that makes more sense to have him replace Letestu.

  175. Admiral Ackbar says:

    Coaching & Gm blunders aside…,,,

Have the Oilers been on the right side of a poorly called game this year? Even once?

Also, was I the only one screaming at the screen about these wide shot-passes that don’t result in a shot on goal?

  176. Gerta Rauss says:

    Strome looked great
    McDavid was McDavid
Shitty result and a kick to the junk for our troubles

I know it’ll sound like sour grapes but the NHL needs to redefine offside

If they are going to use slow mo HD cameras the standard should be the back plane of the player/skate and it has to be all the way over the blue line (anything touching the line is a good)

The NHL needs more goals to count, not less

  177. NYC-Back-to-Tokyo Oil (Gentleman Backpacker) says:

    So, you’re saying you agree?

Certainly not a Ramenda fan, but wasn’t it the HNIC crew on the Kesler hold?

    NYC-Back-to-Tokyo Oil (Gentleman Backpacker),

Sorry, thought you were making a typical Lucic-speed comment. Speed wasn’t really the issue as much as the read/expectation… or a missed pass by the passer (Lucic was presenting)

How about Klef and our 2018 first for … Jordan Oesterle. Does Chicago even pick up the phone? First pairing Dman Oesterle was TOI leader for Hawks tonight … again. But hey, he had plenty of opportunities here, no? Just not Todd’s kind of guy I guess.

  184. Mike Wazowski says:

The Preds winning goal bugged me. Ref is in the motion of blowing the whistle because Larsson just got hit in the face but allows the play to finish. I’ve seen plenty of goals called back because the ref “meant to blow the whistle”.

  185. Crazy Pedestrian says:

It’s just so baffling how bad this team (that should be good) has been. And when their not playing bad, they still somehow lose because of biased reffing or bad luck. while also just as baffling how rediculously good Tampa Bay and Vegas have been and how much Lady Luck has helped them.

  186. hags9k says:

I honestly can’t fault many players tonight. They were engaged, committed, focused, whatever you want to call it, from Talbot out.

I still think we are just a bit short on talent on the blueline.

  187. digger50 says:

Admiral Ackbar: Certainly not a Ramenda fan, but wasn’t it the HNIC crew on the Kesler hold?

Admiral you may be right but the example still stands. Focus on the last point of contact that crosses the line and see if you change your mind.

No, it wasn’t a skating speed thing. He could have reached it. Just didn’t quite react in time. It was like a millisecond difference. Unfortunately, those are the breaks. And I was saying that Strome out instead of Lucic would not have resulted in a goal there. Needed to be a lefty shot. I don’t have an issue with Lucic being out there. He was in the right place…just missed. Them’s the breaks.

  189. Mike Wazowski says:

    digger50,

Um. I think he was talking about the replay from McD’s goal against the Preds earlier in the season.

They probably do that trade, tbh.

I’d do that trade in a heartbeat.

  191. digger50 says:

    This was a good game.

That’s why I’ll go on record after a good game.

I cannot wait to get rid of this coach. Absolute crap. There is no turning this boat around with Todd at the helm. Manager did not give him enough, but he managed to hit this sandbar all by himself. Get out the door already.

  192. hags9k says:

I don’t want to get too down on any one player especially a young developing one, but Caggiula just always makes me think somebody’s younger brother is filling in. He’s like the AP player in junior with the full cage.

  193. Mike Wazowski says:

I really hope the trade Klef for Osterle comments are made with the sarcasm hand in the air. Otherwise, I need to find the “roll my body” emoticon. Rolling my eyes doesn’t really cut it.

I’d do that trade in a heartbeat.

I know. Moral victories just get me pissier than even 5-0 beat downs. Sorry. BTW, please don’t mention that idea to Peter. Thanks.

    russ99:
    Absolute horseshit.

I’ll help pay McLellan’s fine tonight. He has to let loose on this bullshit.

    He never does.

But he’ll bag skate his own players on New Years Day.

I supported him last year, but I’m sick of this turn the other cheek BS. The season is lost ….TMac should give it to the refs, and continue doing so for the rest of the season … just like Anaheim does.

Refs aren’t immune to criticism (it just seems like they are to Oiler fans). Embarrass them often and publicly and they’ll start to think twice before making another BS call against the Oilers.

  196. hags9k says:

    Mike Wazowski,

It was Klef and the 1st rounder.
