My first year in St. Louis, we ran out of money. By January 1st, I was doing everything. I was the president, general manager, coach, and even PR director. We had to let 22 people go, including the PR director, because we had no money. I told our accountant there were three things we needed to make sure of:

  1. We had to keep paying the players because if we didn’t their contracts would be null and void.
  2. We had to pay our power bill because if they ever turned off the power we’ve got no ice and can’t play hockey.
  3. And we had to pay our insurance premiums on our assets, which were the players.

All of this while we were in first place in our division.
