A Few Other Items from Yesterday

I had lunch at the Coliseum yesterday (steak sandwich with caesar salad instead of fries, maybe $14 dollars, very good meal) and midway through (mid-bite, mind you) watched the Oilers coaching staff walk in the door for their lunch.

I would have given a week’s pay to be a fly on the wall (this was after the first scrimmage and before the second one) just to hear the thought process and the exchange.

There are some things we can know just from observation. For instance, it was interesting to see that the centers yesterday included Horcoff, Stoll, Reasoner, Schremp, Gagner and Cogliano, while the wingers included Pouliot and Brodziak. It doesn’t mean this is going to be written in stone, but they’re taking Pouliot for a test drive on the wing.

Also, the lines were of interest. Here’s a few that caught my eye:

  • Stoll-Moreau-Nilsson
  • Reasoner-Sanderson-Brodziak
  • Horcoff-Penner-Stortini
  • Schremp-O’Marra-Hemsky
  • Cogliano-Trukhno-Pouliot

From what I saw, each of the 4 clubs got what could be termed an “NHL line” and the team with the weaker goaltending got an extra forward or another NHL defender. Not surprisingly (but something I didn’t note yesterday) is that the most impressive kids were the ones on the lines with the NHL players. There’s no substitute for experience.

Ah, read the MacT post first and commented on MP on the wing there. Who did Thoresen play with – do you recall?

Thoresen was on a line with Sestito and Rohlfs but he moved around a little on that team iirc.

I watched them play today and couldn’t agree more. In fact it’s exactly what I said to my brother as we watched Reasoner’s line play. They absolutely dominated what I called the “skill team” (Hemsky, Cogliani, Pouliot, Schremp, O’Marra, etc..I hope I got all that right) who were quick on the puck, made a lot of nifty moves, but failed to convert.

Meanwhile, Sanderson opens the scoring, and I believe the Greene goal finished it all up (a nice shot from way out, as opposed to the lobs he’d been flipping in all game previous to that). The game was 4-0 with a few minutes remaining when MacT shut it down for skating drills for Hemsky’s team.

One other note, TJ Reynolds absolutely smeared Hemsky along the boards and Staois roared in and dropped the gloves! The mood suddenly got pretty damn serious pretty damn quick. Good fight, eneded in a what I’d say was a draw.

But Hemsky, what a skater. What did they say about that Superman movie wayyy back?

The fact that Mjolnir was playing with an ECHLer and a sub-ECHLer and still looked good speaks volumes about Thoresen’s quality.
