This is beginning to piss me off.
Why, oh why, do the hockey gods hate us this much?
I’m out of things to cross for this team now. We did not need this. Here’s hoping he recovers. Quickly.
Now can we sign Mike Johnson?
Sweet Jesus. I cannot believe it.
“Ulcerative colitis is a rare disease, with an incidence of about one person per 10,000 in North America. The disease tends to be more common in northern areas.”
From Wikipedia. Ugh.
Dear sweet Jesus, another reason for players to not want even being born here.
I thought the bad luck from last season was over. Yikes, this is unbelievable!
The only good news out of this is that I was just about ready to use that same picture of Fernando for my post on the subject, but I changed my mind and went with a different one. Yet another me/Lowetide picture collision would be more than I could bear.
And of course there’s a thread started at HF claiming this might not be a bad thing because it will let another kid the chance to play some big minutes up front. Who are these morons?
I just bought a new PVR to go with my CI package. Now I wish I had spent that money on booze. Damnit.
If this problem started manifesting itself last seasonAnd obviously it hasn’t been getting betterAnd the Oilers are already light on the right sideWhy haven’t they already signed a veteran RW????
Moreau – Horcoff – JohnsonTorres – Stoll – ThoresenPenner – Gagner – Hemsky
I just threw up a bit in my mouth, but I think we can see that happening. It gives us two lines that should be able to hold even, and then that third line has to be sheltered beyond belief.
I just don’t see how we can justify having Horcoff on anything but a PVP line at this point.
I agree that this is brutal. I think Pisani’s contract is/was too generous, but that’s got little to do with Pisani himself, and nothing to do with this most recent news about him. Apart from Lowe’s generosity, it seems like the guy can’t get a break – didn’t he also have a difficult time with his newborn child last season? I hope he gets well soon, but it sounds like it could be a while.
So this leads to the next issue. I’m not happy about this, i.e. in the sense that it gives an opportunity to a younger kid. But the fact is that it does – or at least CAN. And to be honest, I think it would be better, for the future, if the coaches give a kid an opportunity to fill this spot, as opposed to trying to replace Pisani with an established guy – even a Mike Johnson (who I happen to like).
Whats up Lowetide… and a shout out to all the other regular commentators on your site…. Been reading your site for some time now (keeps me going in an otherwise barren “hockey talk” landscape here) – always enjoy your insights, and opinions – great job! – and felt compelled to join in on the action. Born in Edmonton, but basically grew up in Brooklyn, NY, always an OIler fan though…and when the Rangers became the New York OIlers along the way (circa 1994), it made easier to not feel guilty about splitting loyalties…lol…
At any rate, as far as Pisani going down… it does suck, and I do like him a lot as a player, however I don’t think he is/was the difference maker in making the OIlers a real serious playoff threat, if they are to actually even make the playoffs this season (and I am an optimist) : he is a great role player, maybe even would have actually delivered closer to the results we expected last season after his playoff performance in the cup run – and I hope he gets healthy quickly, but let’s be realistic… LT in your rankings in the previous post, Hemsky is an above average player, not quite an impact player on an Iginla level (which I totally agree with), therefore Pisani must fit the definition of role player… and we have many decent potential role players ( I wish that was impact players) in the making.
So, why not look at the upside -give a kid a chance to show something – and, again, although I think Mike Johnson could be helpful… what’s the point? (I don’t know why there is so much Mike Johnson love to be honest…). This IS another developmental year… The Oilers are gonna have to continue to build for the next couple of seasons (!) so f_ck it : let’s stop the speculation, look at the bright side, and really see what can Pouliot, Nilsson, Cogliano, Thoresen, Jacques, Stortini, Schremp, O’Marra, Truhkno, and/or anyone else (Gagner? really?) floating around in the system can actually do at the NHL level. Give them a freakin shot – MacT – give them some real minutes! What do you have to lose? Your job?
Trial by fire. Brace yourself, it might get a little ugly (hope not 2 wins in 20 games ugly)… and I did get slightly hyped by the summer signings, but is signing Mike Johnson or a healthy Pisani really gonna be THE DIFFERENCE?
Screw it…Gotta suck it up, let the kids play, and let’s just find out what we really got. What the hell….
(pdo: I had to laugh at the “threw up in my mouth” bit…)(And yeah if Horcoff blows out a knee, Penner pulls a “Lupul”, and Hemsky loses his arm in a “freak accident”, I will finally have no choice but to start cheering for the Islanders… fyi – funny picture of Comrie -caption siad Canadian hockey player Michael Comrie – no mention of him as an Islander- in the NY Post a couple of days walking down the street with his new girl Hillary Duff … dork.)
This is a mountain for the Oilers to climb. It is probably too much to ask of any of the youngsters to fill his shoes.
Interesting days ahead.
Get well soon Fernando!
At this point, I would love to see a 9-day Gagner trial.
The problem with letting a kid show something is that, with the possible and very marginal exception of Kyle Brodziak, we have no kids even faintly capable of reproducing Pisani’s skillset. Pisani is a mobile, finessey defensive forward who doesn’t get outmuscled too much and is always in the right place at the right time (can you remember one time Pisani genuinely screwed up to allow a scoring chance against?).
Brodziak is as close as we come, but even setting aside the inexperience, Kyle has feet of cement without half of Pisani’s hockey IQ. And while Brodziak may be a good choice for the 4-line (send Reasoner to the glue factory already), if you think he can replace a single Pisani minute you’re out of your mind.
The problem really is that the Oilers need more NHL players and they just lost them one.
Pisani is a very valuable player because wherever they stick him that line does well. Remember when Stoll and Torres took off? Exactly.
Pisani is an NHL veteran with a wide range of skills. The Oilers needed more of them, not fewer.
After sleeping on it, I’m hoping that MacT does this:
Or something like that. Sanderson has now become pretty important.
Its amazing what one less NHL body up front does to this lineup, this roster is such a mishmash with such little forward depth. I never thought that that this team was a bottom 5 roster but 1 more injury to a NHL forward and I can’t see any other possibility. Lowe needs to get at least 1 NHL forward preferably 2 before the calender strikes October. I’m not confident that happens. This is a mighty blow.
You know Hemsky’s “5 remaining bullets”?
Just shoot me now.
MacT said that he “hoped” Stoll would continue from where he left off… that he “hoped” Penner would mesh, so Hemsky would be better… BUT… that he “NEEDED” Pisani to play to his capabilities.
Now… we freakin’ NEED 2-3 more NHLers. For **** sake…
OT – Training Camp
NHL.com says that it starts on Thursday, September 13th. I called TheTeam1260 this morning and Bryn confirmed that KLo did say the 11th… BUT… he’s guessing that may mean the physicals, because Monday is the Golden Bears/Rookie game. This would push the start of open practice to Wednesday the 12th.
I guess we’re on stand-by till the Oilers let us know.
If noone can dig up a “sign Mike suggestion” earlier than April 10, then I’m taking credit for starting, what has become, an enormous bandwagon.
I’ve already read elsewhere someone saying that this whole colitis situation was bestowed upon the Oilers by God so that they’d sign Mike Johnson. Seriously.
I’ve really become obsessed with the man myself, and it all began when I was playing EA 03 or 04, when Johnson was on the Yotes and I noticed he was rated higher than anyone on the Oilers. I remember at the time thinking: who the frick is Mike Johnson?
Now, I’ve come to know him as a God.
Using the head to head site Vic posted a couple months ago I glanced at a couple Habs/Pens games and, sure enough, Johnson took the wealth of Crosby minutes. In just the two games I looked at he held Sid scoreless for almost twenty minutes of ES ice time.
Why hasn’t anyone signed this guy?
I don’t know if anyone can really take credit for the signing Johnson campaign, there’s a bunch of fellows who;ve been following the bunch of fellows who take on the tough min and Johnson just happens to be one of them. I noticed him because him and Bonk were taking on the top lines while Koivu and Ryder were out there playing against no ones and getting pounded while doing so, I might add.
In any case it doesn’t matter who wnated Johnson first, the thing is that we needed him B4 Pisani got hurt but if the Oilers were stupid enough not to realize it then, why would they realize it now?
The best news for Lowe is that in lieu of results, Lowe loves excuses so she’s got one right off the bat before camp even starts.
The bad news is that run of luck last year with the injuries and such doens’t seem to have abated. Of course Lowe made a lot of his own luck by leaving the team so fucking thin with the Pronger and Smyth disasters.
I dunno, anytime you read LT and he’s talking about how pivotal a player Sanderson is, well then it’s not a good day. But Lowe’s contract still hasn’t been renewed so maybe if we suck for ’08 and that leads to his dismissal, it will be best for all concerned.
To anybody thinking that we’re a contending team this year- look what one injury does to us. Pisani/Moreau/Horcoff/Stoll are all irreplacable because they are the only forwards on the team who can handle really tough sledding. Thoreson/Brodziak/Pouliot are the second tier guys, and they simply haven’t shown they’re capable of stepping in for the above four yet. We need veteran shutdown guys, especially with an all-offensive defensive corps.
I second everything Dennis said (cause I’m not smart enough to state it so efficiently myself). I’m going to start praying for real that Lowe’s contract doesn’t get renewed. Maybe 2008 will be the year we lose him, MacT, and Maciocia (“the garden gnome”) in one fell swoop.
It really is baffling, isn’t it? I was banging the drum for Johnson from a Flames perspective back in May (instead I got Wayne Primeau and Owen Nolan…sigh).
Look at his 5v5 stuff on hockeyanalysis.com – he played a bunch against a murderers row: Heatley, Aflredsson, Briere, St. Louis, Vanek, Spezza, Savard…
and yet he’s in the black at the end of the year.
I think the parallel question is: how come Gainey let this guy go?
The Boston curse was lifted in the fall of 2004. The curse floated around testing out teams. Not really sure who to latch on to.Then in the summer of 2006 CFP asked for a trade. The curse said I recognize this routine. It has not let go since.
Hopefully these post training camp Fwd for dmen trades Klowe has talked about materialize and help us out.
Johnson wasn’t a Pisani on the Leafs from what I remember. But he’s a solid 3rd line guy that won’t hurt you. Give him 2nd line time and he’ll get 40 points on a good year. The flip side is he’s no where near physical.
Now regarding Pisani (I really hope he gets well soon), all the Oilers need now is for Staios to develop a pubic bone problem and Moreau to slap someone on the elbow pad and dislocate his other shoulder…with the luck K. Lowe has been having, it seems plausible.
luck? or karma?
I just don’t like to see innocents like Pisani harmed as the hockey gods take their revenge on Lowe.
Not sure what kind of role Johnson played with TO but last year in Mtl he was carrying the mail for sure.
And from what I heard from Moreau today on TSN, Pisani’s a long way from being able to play.
Ok, so before we knew this, the Oilogosphere consensus was that the Oilers should add M. Johnson to a RW that included Hemsky, Pisani and Nilsson or Sanderson (depending on which guy they wanted to flip to the RHS), correct?
Now it’s blatantly obvious to everyone other than Lowe and that dullard Prendergast that they MUST sign Johnson, plus they likely need another move. Dave Scatchard at 500k for one year is my suggestion (swing Pouliot to 2RW with Stoll and Torres perhaps?).
My other question is this: OK, so Lowe incurred the wrath of the hockey gods somewhere along the line….whereabouts exactly? I’d say the Smyth mishandling, but whatever “curse” was happening was in play on the afternoon of June 23, 2006….
Puck Fronger. I want him to take a 104mph Souray slap-shot right in the throat this year. The kind of thing that shelves him for 3 months and puts the Ducks in the toilet, you know? Get that karma going the other direction…because Brian Burke has certainly not done anything to deserve all the gifts he’s been handed by Lowe (the league’s most complete package of a d-man, the addition by subtraction that Lupul was, and now what appears to be a top-five draft pick).
This is very bad news. We were short 1 RW already in terms of heavy lifting (a fixable situation) but we now we have zero guys who can fill this role. If Lowe sits on his cap space with this glaring hole unfilled – well that will tell you something about how the season will go and it’s not good.
