Colin McDonald

It’s beginning to look like the Oilers have something in Colin McDonald. After 4 pedestrian (based on numbers) college seasons he appears to be finding his way quickly as a pro player.

Kelly Buchberger: “Colin has come a long way since last year and doesn’t leave anything in the locker room. He hasn’t got a lot of quality ice time, but he makes things happen in the time he does get. He’s a good skater who reads plays well, has a good shot and a quick release. And how he has progressed is directly the result of hard work.”

That’s some high praise. McDonald scored a huge goal tonight, his first as a pro player. It tied the game for Springfield late (very late, 19:18 of the 3rd period) and puts McDonald at 7gp, 1-4-5 in his first few weeks in pro hockey.

The quote from Buchberger is available in this article from Bruce Berlet.

That’s a nice start to his pro career. And he plays a position where the Oilers look a little thin.

    Good for the kid.

Yay, it’s Jacques/Winchester/Billion other players the Oilers have wasted time on 8.5 beta version.

I hope he ends up being more than the endless line of players the Oilers have tried to find with his “skills”, but I’m not overly optimistic.

If anything, I guess he will be a decent replacement for Jacques once they give up on him.

Ribs: I hear you, but otoh all they need is for one of these Coke Machines to turn into a player and they’ll have something.

I’m encouraged for McDonald but discouraged for that 2003 draft class currently. The Prendergast drafting 2001 (Hemsky), 2002 (Stoll) had extremely useful forwards at the top of the draft and I’ve always felt Pouliot would add his name to that list.

Now? I think Jacques may end up being more useful than Pouliot. He really needs to show something and right soon.

McDonald has had a nice pro start.
