Salmelainen to Finland
Tony Salmelainen’s time with Toronto’s organization didn’t take long to come to an end, as it was announced today that the Finnish winger is heading home.
“Things are going on with his family,” general manager John Ferguson said last night, adding that “he wasn’t really here long enough for us to be disappointed.”
My thanks to Master Lok for passing this along. I remain convinced Tony Salmelainen was more talented than several of the Oilers prospects from his era who got longer looks and better chances. However, the Leafs were his third organization after Edmonton (CHI, MON) and this would have to be considered the end of his NHL dreams. Salmelainen is 26, and was 2-0-2 with Toronto (AHL) so far this season.

He was never really part of the Montreal org. They traded Samsonov to Chicago for Cullimore and Salmelainen because it was cheaper to buy out Cullimore and Salmelainen than Samsonov.
