That’s McCabe to Messier’s right, isn’t it? And Naslund and Lumme to the left of Bure? What a strange group.
I know Sanford has played well against the Oilers in the past, still, it makes a hell of a difference when Luongo isn’t in the Vancouver net. I like the Oilers chances to outplay and outchance the Nucks tonight.
And now would be a good time for Stoll and Torres to start putting some pucks in the other guy’s net, too.
Torres is out for the game. Sanderson replaces him.
Unless ‘bookends’ is used ironically, it couldn’t be more off the mark. Bure is still regarded as the lone legitimate superstar skater the Canucks have ever had. Out here, it’s considered a crime against hockey that he’s not in the farcical Hall of Fame. Messier, on the other hand, won a recent radio poll that basically asked, “what ex-Canuck do you hate the most.” When he was recently sainted in Edmonton, the media here spent day after day complaining that he was an over-the-hill, non-productive, icetime-hogging, spotlight-grabbing douche-bag.He is easily the most hated pro athlete in Vancouver history. Easily. Not a Canucks fan. Not even close. Juse reporting what I hear.
Art: That’s exactly why I wrote it. I have several Canucks friends who are always asking my wife about the town she grew up in (Medicine Hat) because Linden is/was from there, and they talk about Bure the way we talk about our dozen or so HOFers.
Lupul with 3 Goals today
PJO: Really? Wow. Amazing week for him.
6 min of great hockey, some nice move by Pitkanen and Nilsson-Gagner looks good too.But Garon plz stay in the net if you gonna do a stupid play like that.
This has been stunning hockey but the Oilers need to be ahead 1-0.
It’ll bite them in the bum, mark my words.
Bite them in the sense that they’ll be giving Vancouver a point for taking it to the shootout?
I’m really liking Nilsson out there – he’s playing with confidence. Gagner too, willing to battle along the boards. First line needs to get some more SOG.
What a boring game though.
Methinks we’re getting overconfident or even cocky about our SO success.
Even if we win, that means that Vancouver goes up one more point. That might be the point we need to make the playoffs (not that I’m predicting we’re making the playoffs).
Oilers haven’t picked it up after Sourays shot broke the glass.
It feels like Vancouver is gonna win this one with a fluke goal by one of those horribel twins.
How is this game still 0-0.
Come on Pitkanen to Hemsky to Horcoff!
At last Hemsky woke up, great but risky play by Souray on the blue line and what a finish by Shawn the Sniper.
The Oilers have got to stop letting the Canucks get these bonus points.
WTF is with the shootout?
An of course they blow the lead by not clearing the zone when they go the chance. Why why why!!
I can’t take this…my heart is weak. And when did Horcoff get Shanahan’s shot.
Shawn the Sniper and San Fernando, but it feels kind of like a loss anyway.
I know what you mean, those 3 points given to Vancouver, especially these last 2, really seem like they’ll come back to bite the Oil in the rear.
I think Sanford was the only person around that didn’t know Fernando was going to go backhand 5-hole.
Oilers should have won this game imo in the first period. BU G and only one of the Sedins gets a point?
Oh what the heck am I talking about? They WON!
Okay, did anyone else just see and hear P.J. Stock say, “Ryan Horcoff there to take the plasp…” followed by “…Ohlund Johnny on the spot for the winner…er…tie-er”.
Why, why, WHY is this man allowed on HNIC.
Also MacT on After Hours, good times.
Also quite enjoyed Cherry talking about Garon’s amazing elastic groin, the pre-game talk about how Pisani is a just a stabalizing force, and Hrudey’s love for the “rover” Pitkanen.
I worked with Ron MacLean 100 years ago and he’s a really good guy, but why don’t they just sign the hell off down east after the first game and let the west have their own broadcast?
I mean, are they afraid someone will say something less articulate than PJ Stock?
Hrudey is smarter and better dressed than Clowntime Cherry and although I do enjoy Ron’s interviews they’ve buggered up SHS so badly it’s unwatchable.
Mandel apparently is going hardball with Katz. Poor bastard had a nice run I guess.
All this talk about Canucks’ road trip. They’ve played 4 games in 6 nights in 4 different cities, while the Oilers have played 4 games in 6 nights in 4 different cities. Canucks played three in California before jetting to Edmonton, while the Oil played in Texas, Missouri, and Michigan before flying home for what amounts to the last game of the road trip. Not to mention the 19 (!) minutes of overtime they’ve played this week.
The two teams put on a pretty decent show under the circumstances. I knew immediately the Oil had scored too early when Horcoff finally broke the deadlock, and sure enough, they couldn’t make it to the next whistle. This team doesn’t have much of an idea about how to hold a lead.
But the shootout magic continues. Things looked grim when they were down to their last life but they hung in there, Garon stood tall with the game on the line, then my two favourite Oilers (Horcoff and Pisani) came through in the clutch as they did so often in ’06. What a laser by Horcoff, I’ve never seen him shoot with such confidence.
Three shootout wins in four days, 10 on the year when no other team in the NHL has won more than four? That’s unfuckinbelievable.
It’s also unfuckinsustainable, but what the hey, we’ll take the free points.
So who’s winning the season series now? Oilers 3 wins, Vancouver 2; but Vancouver 7 points (2-0-3), Oilers 6 (3-2-0). Gary Bettman has a lot to answer for when he meets the Great Accountant in the Sky. Which can’t happen soon enough IMO.
Thats a pretty harsh comment Bruce.
MacT on After Hours. I love this stuff.
When I was a kid there was a show on CKSA Lloydminster. It was called Talent Hour or something and local folks would play music and such.
It was completely ridiculous of course but it was also live television and anyting (and I mean anything) could happen and often did.
After Hours with Oake is kind of like that. He’s clearly capable and very funny, but not clearing a question like radish is insane.
It really is.
Figure of speech. He can have a nice life on the Grand Caymans for all I care, I just wish he would get on with his retirement and stop screwing up our game. In his regime generally accepting accounting principles have been completely abandoned and the standings, statistics and record book are a complete mess.
Case in point: Oilers have 16 wins, individually their goalies have been credited with 16 wins, but their shooters have a combined total of only 6 game winning goals. Bizarre, isn’t it? But also unnecessary, if the people in the league office had a clue how to balance their books.
2 SO wins away from Dallas’s record of 12 back in 2005-2006
What’s this radish thing?
Someone sent a message to Oake on his bberry that asked MacT something like “how did you get the nickname radish?”
Oake asks, MacT said something like “no, never heard that one.”
And because the guy has a quick wit, MacT THEN says something like “but I’m certain it’ll be mentioned to me a few times from now on.”
It was funny, actually. However, it looked clumsy.
He had started the season slow, but has picked it up. He has 7 points in the last 9 games, and is +7 in that span. What I love about him is the fact he puts up numbers on Even-strength, not relying on the PP to pad up his stats.
Last 9 games TOI:28:0427:2129:5127:2927:0526:1026:4822:0825:47
Meanwhile, MacT isn’t doing anything to cut down Souray’s time
Since his return:
Interesting to note he’s got a point in all 3 games and is +1 in that time. He’s also only been a minus player 2 out 9 games.
Yet, he looks awkward and a liability on the ice. Go Figure.
Staios was down to ~20 minutes tonight. +1 tonight.
“He is easily the most hated pro athlete in Vancouver history. Easily. “
Steve Francis IMO.
“Staios was down to ~20 minutes tonight. +1 tonight.”
Staios takes a lot of flack on the boards for his play. I think of him more as miscast in his role than a bad player. If the Macedonian is on your 3rd pairing getting 15-20 min a night you have a pretty good group.
I haven’t seen much of Souray so I am just forming an opinion of him. The most glaring thing I see from him is his constant lack of effort getting back for pucks in his own end. He is getting beat to pucks regularly. I can forgive lack of talent, foot speed or making the occasional mistake but to coast in and let the other team get possession in your own end is just plain lazy.
Yeah there was an instance in OT where Souray was ”out of gas,” but didn’t even attempt to obtain the puck after a dump-in.
He’s strong along the boards though, and has a long reach with his stick.
Another shootout. That’s just nuts.
A nice showing for Garon. I wish the Oil could wrangle into that 8th spot so that we can ride him through a couple of rounds with the way he’s been playing. Chalk up his first win for his baby born Friday.
Curtis Sanford loses! Ha! Why that guy is ten times the goalie he usually is when he plays the Oil is mindbending.
Souray broke the freaking rink! On a wobbler even! You have to be half crazy to stand in the way of this guy’s shot. You can say what you want about him but he’s been on the scoresheet every night and he is making an impact.
Good to see Sanderson playing again. Back injuries are a bitch, especially at his age.
I had to laugh at Sanford breaking his stick after San Fernando’s goal. It just felt right, I dunno.
Also, I found the radish comment odd, specifically because I seem to remember my dad mentioning that as a MacT nickname back in the day. Perhaps an early Oilers-fan invention, a la Scorcoff, etc.?
… they talk about Bure the way we talk about our dozen or so HOFers.
It’s true, although if Pavel would have had a decent cast to play with, at any time, he certainly could have been more widely regarded as being as good as he was. Some of those Vancouver teams were hideous, and the fact he went and potted 60 goals in Florida speaks volumes when it comes to his talent level.
Imagine Bure on a contender for the prime of his career? He’d be a slam dunk Hall of Famer.
He probably still is.
Yeah, the Bure in Fla season was something to behold. Not many people bring that up anymore and I have no idea why.
All that being said, AG and the boys had a good time making fun of Macguire and his Crosby love but fucking Hughson is just as bloody bad with the Sedins. I don’t even think anyone can debate this.
Everytime he does a Van game on Sat night, it’s like he’s doing it on a joint basis for Sportsnet Pacific and the Sedins family.
And it’s gotten so bad that he’s even dragging Simpson into it. The other night, for instance, Simpson was talking about “The Shift”, ie the PP where the Sedins controlled the puck for a full two minutes.
Memo to Hughson and Canucks fans: you’ve never won a fucking thing.
