Holy crap the game is on!

I love the photo. They are like mirror images in terms of reaction off the faceoff. Cool sticks too, that’s like an entire tree in each hand.
I have turned the sound off of the game.
Rob Brown is just that bad.
You know, Kenta Nilsson’s kid really is pretty damn good sometimes.
I’m listening to the Red Wings broadcast on the Intertubes.
By far the best, I think
Not too homer-yVery informed about the other teamall-in-all they da bomb
I did put in a $70 bet on Wings tonight and that’s a really good way to ensure a win for the Oilers But it gets expensive in the long run.
Pitkanen injured again. The last day where it was possible to trade him.
Someone out there is pulling the strings and laughing.
Also, how many high sticking penalties by Staios have to result in goals before the coach admonishes him?
Looks like the Oilers aren’t going to let the Red Wings ursurp their worst team in the league status.
Sergei Samsonov with 2 goals tonight. He’s really turned it around in Carolina.
Pitkanen, Moreau and Souray a bunch of damaged goods.
Fernando. He’s our Amos Otis.
Pisani owes my neighbour an apology for my extremely loud shout.
Fernando and Smytty, oh my.
Well for once I’m glad I stayed up late to watch the end of a game. Pisani just keeps building on his hometown hero portfolio.
How many shootouts would Rob Brown have been in?
Ties and sweaters for everyone!
Also no matter how many times I see it, it’s a joy watching Garon in a shootout. He’s just Mr. Fantastic with those splits he does and how quickly he can spring out from the net and go down into the butterfly.
I would think that it’s a somewhat dubious record for the most shootout wins though.
And the point difference between regular, ot, and shootout win is?
Nadda, Nill, Nun, I.E. dont give a rats a** about semantics a win is a win.
I missed the second period, ie I was watching one of my programs, but when they did the extended highlight pact at game’s end Nilsson’s work on the shift Gilbert scored on was on display.
Fuck did he ever do a lot of nice things on that shift. The guy doesn’t shoot enough for my liking, he’s not big and he doesn’t always want to battle but yet he still puts up points.
To me he screams to be the third element that you throw into a trade; you know one of those deals where you deal a 1st, a proven young kid and then Nilsson as the guy no one’s quite sure of but he does have value.
As for the game, Gilbert with three points and 40 giveaways, Garon with one iffy goal and another terrible one and considering who the Oilers were playing, the only people who really cared about the result in this one was Brian Burke.
the only people who really cared about the result in this one was Brian Burke.
Yup, and we’ll take the two points. Shades of the toughest loss of the season, Oilers almost got burned on another late goal by Filppula on another bad line change.
Not only did Gagner’s point streak end tonight, Filppula’s softie saddled Zack Stortini (just coming on the ice on the scrambled change) with his first minus game since Dec. 29, ending a remarkable stretch of 23 straight games without a minus. Oh well, Garon has bailed out his teammates, Zack included, a lot more often than he has seived one in like that. File it under “shit happens”. And to the team’s credit, they stormed back to tie it up and allow Garon a chance to redeem himself in the shootout. Would have been a shame to see Mathieu sporting the goat horns after a 40-save effort.
Even with $17 MM in payroll consigned to the pressbox (Souray, Horcoff, Torres, Moreau) or the end of the bench (Roloson), the ’07-08 Oilers have a lot more reislience than the sorry crew that limped down the stretch a season ago. It may be a lost season, but there are encouraging signs.
Did anyone catch who the heck made that terrible line change that led to Filppula’s goal.
That guy is getting an error. I think it was either Matt Greene or Mathieu Roy from NHL.com, but I couldn’t be sure.
I got it — figured out how to find it on NHL.com. It was Matt Greene who came off at the wrong moment. He was replaced by Staios, who had no chance to get over to Fillpula.
Grebeshkov appears as if he tried to make up for the bad change by sliding over, but he was too late to get to Fillpula, who scored a weak one on Garon.
I wish Nilsson was as tough on the puck in his own end as he can be in the attacking zone.
It was good to hear Garon admit he let in a softie in his locker room interview after the game. Filppula’s goal was weak. I think Roloson would have diverted the line of questioning by strangling a bunny rabbit on camera with his bare hands.
The Crosstiniaks were by far the top forward unit of the game. GlenX hits anything that moves on the forecheck, and that sends Zack into a frenzy, and you can see his head swivel around seeking his next target. I think he nearly bowled over a zebra i one corner after GlenX creamed a Redwing in the other corner.
They also drew three minors, including the game tying powerplay. When the camera zoomed to the bench after Pisani scored, GlenX and Stortini were punching eachother in the arm, they were that fucking excited.
Even if this ride has been a string of wild luck and the those two guys start to pay for hitting themselves out of the play all the time, it’s been a worthwhile highlight to another shit show season.
Did you make that up? (I’m going to use that and I like to give credit where it is due.)
Bobby Nilsson is a much younger version of Kristian Huselius. I don’t think he’ll ever be as gutsy as Hemsky is but he will provide that secondary scoring.
That’s home brew right there Staples. You can’t buy those creative juices in a store.
“GlenX hits anything that moves on the forecheck, and that sends Zack into a frenzy, and you can see his head swivel around seeking his next target.”
After reading this I’m immediately reminded of Legolas (GlenX) and Gimli (Stortini) from Lord of the Rings, especially the fight scenes where they’re trying to one-up the other killing orcs. If they keep trying to one-up the other in the hitting department, and don’t get out of place because of it, MacT’s going to have to reward them with more ice time.
TOI vs. Wings—————-…15. Roy 10:5616. Glencross 8:5717. Stortini 7:1918. Sanderson 7:17
Hits vs. Wings—————–1. Glencross 42. Stortini 33. Greene 23. Stoll 2 …
Now if only Ales would provide that primary scoring. Since the All-Star Break:
Hemsky 12 GP, 2-5-7, -9
Part of that is the wrist I’m sure, but those talk show callers who were complaining that Horcoff did nothing when Hemsky missed a couple games need to take another look at who really drives the bus.
how dare you suggest that horcoff is a bonafied first line centre? that is the most outrageous thing i have ever heard.
Stortini and Glencross remind me of the Bash Brothers from Mighty Ducks 2.
i like my Crosstini-aks with some nice basil & prosciutto, or maybe a nice goat’s cheese.
I wish Nilsson was as tough on the puck in his own end as he can be in the attacking zone.
I noticed the same thing. In the offensive zone he’ll go into the tough spots and take a hit to make a play. In his own zone, not so much.
Also true. And hilarious.
“Stortini and Glencross remind me of the Bash Brothers from Mighty Ducks 2.”
I hope Stortini’s not the one stripping in the penalty box. That’d be an eye-opener.
I noticed 46 almost killing the ref as well. It was him coming on his right wing to the left of Osgood and he had the Wing lined up but had to divert from his straight route because of an official impeding his progress.
Hemsky just isn’t the same guy out there and I get the feeling that if we had our own first round pick he’d be in the pressbox.
You know, as much as I’ve come to like Zach, I think that line could be even better with someone else complementing 20-51. 20 really starts the play by seperating the bad guys from the puck and 51′s showing some play-making chops here lately. That’s not to throw 46 under the bus and I know he still hasn’t played a lot of games but I look at things last night like when he almost scored on Garon and I think we could make that line even better.
Didn’t see the game last night in keeping with my FOPPV mantra so can’t comment on the plays you mentioned, Dennis. But geez, I dunno how you can be critical of the current make-up of the fourth line. They’re taking the body, they’re forechecking the shit out of the opposition, they’re drawing more penalties than they’re taking, and they’re even outscoring.
Then there’s that little matter that doesn’t get mentioned too often in the more highbrow blogs:
Oilers PiM leaders:———————Stortini 166Staios 88Stoll 54…
Who else do you see complementing 20-51 while also standing up for the other 17 guys on the roster? Robbie Schremp??
Bruce, how bout Pouliot or Reddox?
Yeah, Pouliot’s the guy I was thinking about as well.
I’d feel better with Zach as the 13th guy, coming in for certain matchups.
Hey, I like Zach and I think he deserves an NHL paystub but I think it’s the 20/51 combo that’s responsible for the offense on that line.
I hope they’re both called up, DG, and I’ll be interested to see what they bring, but neither of them is remotely close to an enforcer, which like it or not is one of the roles Zack Stortini fills on this team. And to do that he needs to be the 12th man, not the 13th, Dennis. The Oilers don’t need him in the press box, they need him on the bench, and on the ice. “Certain matchups” occur within the context of a game, and are not always predictable.
Liam Reddox is 5’11, 180, and has 28 PiM. Marc Pouliot has all of 45 PiM and an unsightly -17 in two leagues this season. You really think either of them is going to outperform Stortini on a crash unit that has been gaining confidence and coherence by the shift? That’s the one trio that’s doing its job every night, every shift, and with gusto. GlenX has been great, a terrific acquisition, and since his arrival Brodziak and Stortini have been playing their best hockey of the season. In the 7 games they’ve played together:
Player – G-A-P, +/- | S, HT, PiM————————————-Glencross 2-3-5, +3 | 11, 13, 17Stortini 0-4-4, +5 | 5, 20, 31 Brodziak 4-1-5, +3 | 13, 8, 17
I just can’t see anything there that suggests this isn’t a line of equals, with Zack leading the group in assists, plus, hits and PiM; Brodz in goals, points, shots and TOI, GlenX in points and across-the-board balance. Add up shots plus hits and all three are between 21 and 25; include points and plus and all three are between 29 and 34. That’s a lot of positive events in barely an hour of actual TOI as a unit.
There’s lots of problems on the team that need fixing. That isn’t one of them.
I agree with Bruce regarding Stortini. There’s a reason for Stortini’s extended no GA streak. The success of the line depends at least somewhat on them spending most of their time in the offensive zone, which I credit somewhat to Zach. He’s strong on the boards in both zones and I think that plays a role in his effectiveness in starting and maintaining puck possession.
Yeah, Bruce, maybe I’m just too caught up in wanting Pouliot to get another shot:)
I really like the new 4th line but I still believe in Pouliot.
I’d like to see MP get another shot too Dennis, but there’s other places to put him. Sanderson and Reasoner are (surely?) not in the long-term plans, Hemsky’s playing hurt, Stoll’s bell is still ringing, there’s room for Pouliot in there somewhere, and maybe Reddox and even JFJ too.
The two lines I wouldn’t touch right now are 12-13-89 and 20-46-51. The rest of the season is an investment in those guys, as well as in the young blueliners and maybe a couple of call-ups.
Hard to argue with that, Bruce. Those two lines should have a chance to grow and if the Oilers are serious about taking a run at Tavaras next year, those two lines will probably stay intact for ’09.
I still can’t believe someone wouldn’t give up a 7th rounder for Sanderson and I can’t believe the Oilers held onto Reasoner
