AHL Report Cards 07-08: Liam Reddox

This is Liam Reddox. He has done more this season than any other Springfield Falcon to establish himself as an NHL prospect. Reddox even got a “cup of coffee” in the show, incredible considering his first pro season was a pedestrian effort in Double-A (the ECHL).

I used to hand out report cards A-F but they always seem to have 5 or 6 players with the same grade and so in an effort to get clearance the players are ranked on percentage (0-100) and although there is some season to go it would seem to be enough to make a decision on them.

The playoffs are now in doubt but I don’t think that should be viewed as a surprise. This was an extremely young hockey club and the learning curve (as we will see when reviewing some of the names) is a steep one. The American Hockey League is not for virgins.

For the season, Reddox is 58gp, 15-22-37, +10 46pims. 13 of his goals were at even strength and based on coach’s words this guy was all-world throughout the season. His first half (25gp, 7-13-20, +7) was more impressive than the second half (33gp, 8-9-17 +3) but there can be little doubt his future now trumps his draft pedigree by some margin. His +10 for the season is easily the best on the team and a full 33 goals clear of the team worst total. Coach Buchberger: “Night in and night out, he’s been our Ryan Smyth. He goes to the net all the time. He’s used in every situation. Last year in Stockton (ECHL) he didn’t play a lot. He’s a surprise. Now it looks like he has a chance to make it.”

Looking forward to the 08-09 season, Reddox is likely to see another full AHL season with a callup to the big club for longer than a one-game look also likely. The big advantage for a player like Liam Reddox is that coach MacTavish doesn’t give two hoots about draft pedigree.

Final Grade: 88%.
