The Edmonton Oilers are clearly double parked. After signing Tom Gilbert and Robert Nilsson last week, the brain trust signed Denis Grebeshkov this afternoon.
The deal is reported to be a one-year contract for $1.5M and would leave #37 two years from being unrestricted if my math is right.
He improved steadily over the season and by year’s end became one of the trusted men on the blueline for coach MacTavish. His positive comments began in about October, well ahead of the results.
In his first 35 games, Grebeshkov was -10 for the season, but in the final 36 games he was +12. He also played tougher minutes as the season wore on, beginning in October when he and Tom Gilbert played against the Iginla line and then a week later were matched up against Detroit’s Zetterberg.
One would have hoped for a longer term deal, but if the $1.5M number is correct it’s a very nice contract for next season.
