Draft Week Post #7: Blue Bullet

Last year, HF Oiler poster Blue Bullet delivered a wonderful look at the 2007 draft. His list (and the notes on each player) were top quality and a very nice guide to the draft. Time constraints have made it impossible for him to deliver the same kind of depth on each player this year, but his list is still worthy of mention and a long look.

I’ve placed in bold the “window” around pick #22 and would suggest that from that list Eberle, Colborne, Robak and Pickard would be obvious selections for the Oilers should they be available when they step to the podium.

For me, the greatest thing about tomorrow is that for the first time since the ’03 draft, I won’t be stuck at a bloody campsite trying to listen to the draft in my van on the radio. That’ll be a nice change of fucking pace.

Always a good day when BB’s top 100 sees the light of day. Tomorrow should be fun, can’t wait.

  2. Oilman says:

Two Goalies in your highlighted area LT. Do you think the Oilers would take a Goalie with their pick?

I’m still saying Gustafson fits the mould of an Oilers draft pick.

  3. digger says:

IMO they won’t go for a goalie with their 1st rounder, but I’m convinced they will do at least one deal to garner some 2nd and 3rd rounders. If they do so, it wouldn’t surprise me for the Oilers to burn a 2nd rounder on a goalie, especially if Pickard is still available.

  4. Rick says:

There’s nothing sexy about taking a goalie in the first round, even less so when you don’t pick again until the 4th round.

On flip side if you do select a goalie and actually make it count you can give your team a nice edge for a long long time.

As Oilers fans how many times a year do you look at Montreal or San Jose with jealousy and think how nice it would be to have that sure fire #1 coming up through the system?

  5. ClaytonMagnet says:

If Pickard is available, I don’t think that’s a bad pick, especially if the first tier offensive forward prospects are all gone. We’re stocked as far as D prospects go, I agree with Rick that a top G prospect would be a boost for this team. Not to mention that it would be a new experience for Oiler fans.

On another note – how long after the draft does Horcoff have to go unsigned before we poop in our pants?

The Oilers need a star named Chet.

    That is all.

Coach might be onto something there, it’s a bit easier than the chase-the-tail gymnastics of sorting a whole bunch of guys with 2 positives, 2 negatives and a question mark. Fact is, with the draft age where it is, eveything south of 5 is a crapshoot, some will have hit their ceiling already, and some will go 4th round and not show good till their 25th birthday. Different arcs. Good fun tomorrow, tho.

For your consideration, Another good 4-letter handle is Luca. What the hell!

What 2nd rounder? They’d have to acquire one.

I was going to ask why there hasn’t been any mention of drafting a goalie on here. I’m glad to see some others did.

  10. Doogie says:

how long after the draft does Horcoff have to go unsigned before we poop in our pants?

Well, we can’t sign him until July 1, under the CBA, so at least then.

  11. digger says:

What 2nd rounder? They’d have to acquire one.

Obviously, which was why I had the “but I’m convinced they will do at least one deal to garner some 2nd and 3rd rounders.” qualifier.

IMO the odds are very high that the Oilers will find a way to get those extra picks they want.

  12. CM says:

I thought we got a second rounder in the pronger deal. Anyone know what happened to this pick?

  13. CM says:

Edmonton Oilers traded Chris Pronger to the Anaheim Ducks for Joffrey Lupul, Ladislav Smid, a 1st round selection in 2007, a conditional 1st round selection and a 2nd round selection in 2008.

  14. Rick says:

Lowe traded Anaheims ’08 second rounder to the Islanders to get Rourke and the Oilers 3rd rounder back (previously traded to NY) so he could put the Vanek/Penner offer sheets together.

  15. doritogrande says:

cm: Edmonton trades 2008 second round draft pick to New York Islanders for Allan Rourke and 2008 third round draft pick.

We did this, iirc, to get back our own third rounder to make the offer sheet.

  16. CM says:

Yes that makes sense. I knew there was something…

  17. andy grabia says:

Obviously, which was why I had the “but I’m convinced they will do at least one deal to garner some 2nd and 3rd rounders.” qualifier.

Right. How I read the one part and not the other escapes me. My bad.

We did this, iirc, to get back our own third rounder to make the offer sheet.

Yup, which we traded with Bergeron to the Isles for Grebeshkov
