Oilers Pick at #163: Teemu Hartikainen

Redline Report: Hartikainen has good size/strength, but his feet are fairly heavy.

Edmonton Sun-The Skinny: He’s a pretty fiesty player, as many Finns are, who doesn’t back away from a good puck battle and has the strength to do well in them. Doesn’t dazzle you with his speed, but he’s a consistent player, hard to knock off the puck, with good leadership skills.
QUOTE: “He comes to play. He competes. He’s got pretty good hands but his skating has to improve a bit. He’s like a poor man’s Thomas Holstrom in that he competes all over the ice.”
– Kevin Prendergast

Edmonton Journal-Just turned 18, but is expected to make the jump to the Finnish Elite League next year. Was with KalPa’s junior squad, netting 10 goals in 37 games. He also had 24 penalty minutes and seven assists.
“He competes, works hard, he has pretty good hands,” said Prendergast.
“His skating needs to improve a little bit but he’s six-foot-two, 200 pounds and he uses his size. He should be on the Finnish junior team at the world championship. I really liked him when I saw him this year. He’s almost a poor man’s (Tomas) Holmstrom. He competes all over the ice.”

If that doesn’t perfectly describe a Coke machine I don’t know what does:-)

  2. Jonathan says:

He’s really only 6’1″, at least according to HF. Lots of strenght though, supposedly.

  3. Lowetide says:

Well he’s a Finn and Redline didn’t call him an NP so it’s not all bad. Redline are not ones sugar coat things.

On his blog Mr. Bugg has some nice things to say about him for a 6th rounder…

    What is his blog?

    Fair enough Jonathan.

He may not be as big as some of the other soda dispensers, but it’s the ‘slow and heavy feet’ description that worries me.

Yeah, I had rather hoped that the Finn they took would be Joonas Rask, but, then again, Ièm hardly an NHL scout either.

Hey does anyone know if Vitali Karamanov was drafted?

Was he the Russian the Oilers invited to camp last year and wanted to sign but couldn’t? I could be wrong but I thought it was him.

Anyone know the deal with him? Did he take a step back playing at Everett?

  10. Lowetide says:

nelson: Thanks, I didn’t know that.

  11. Lord Bob says:

    Karamnov has not been drafted.

That said, the guy’s season with Everett was… well, to put it politely, let’s say it was “middling”. He might be worth dropping a seventh-rounder on but even that’s being generous at this stage.

Thanks LB. I thought I’d heard he had an off year with the Silvertips.
