I know we’re well into the summer and the Oilers have made all the moves they’re going to before training camp. I know they’ve already spent a buh-zillion on the blueline. I know Souray has a no movement deal and they didn’t bring in Visnovsky to deal him, and I know Tom Gilbert is the present and the future. Grebeshkov is going to come in handy, Staios is a solid veteran who can be used in multiple roles, Smid’s learning on the job (why stop now?) and Strudwick was a really nice depth UFA signing. Mathieu Roy isn’t hurt yet.
But Jay Bouwmeester might be available. Nice. Big guy, smooth skater, a big future and he’s only 24 (25 in September). He’s part of the Hemsky cluster and would fit perfectly in the 09-13 timeline the Oilers have seemingly been loading up for since the Pronger trade.
Jacques Martin has apparently offered a nice deal and the Bouwmeester camp has stated they are happy going to arbitration (making him a UFA next summer). Is this a player who is worth trading for and signing long term? What would it cost? Are there better options available?
