Jean Francois Jacques may not have any NHL goals, but he’s very good at one thing: making the opening night roster. In his three seasons since turning pro, Jacques made the opening night roster twice (2006 & 2007).
- September 29, 2005: Oilers reduced their roster to 28 that day.
- November 19, 2006: Oilers called up Stortini next day.
- October 5, 2007: He played about 3 minutes in G1 and then the Oilers sent him down. They recalled him 4 days later. In the minors he scored 1-1-2 with 7 pims in 2gp.
Jacques’ NHL career has been a train wreck. He has now played 53 games at the big league level without a point despite playing well enough in the AHL to earn recall. There are all kinds of theories about it but the bottom line is Jacques size/speed combination have him as a player of interest despite the complete wipeout in the NHL.
He’s had some back trouble but the latest reports have him improving and looking forward to camp. His new deal is a 2-way contract for year one and a 1-way for the second season ($700,000 each time). His physical style and exceptional size would be very valuable on this roster. I think he makes the club (if healthy) again this fall and finally scores a goal. I suggest a drinking game among Oiler nation follow immediately: the ratio should be 6:1 at least for the first one.
Prediction for 08-09: 43gp, 3-7-10 (.232 per game).
