Reasonable Expectations for 08-09 (Jacques)

Jean Francois Jacques may not have any NHL goals, but he’s very good at one thing: making the opening night roster. In his three seasons since turning pro, Jacques made the opening night roster twice (2006 & 2007).

  • September 29, 2005: Oilers reduced their roster to 28 that day.
  • November 19, 2006: Oilers called up Stortini next day.
  • October 5, 2007: He played about 3 minutes in G1 and then the Oilers sent him down. They recalled him 4 days later. In the minors he scored 1-1-2 with 7 pims in 2gp.

Jacques’ NHL career has been a train wreck. He has now played 53 games at the big league level without a point despite playing well enough in the AHL to earn recall. There are all kinds of theories about it but the bottom line is Jacques size/speed combination have him as a player of interest despite the complete wipeout in the NHL.

He’s had some back trouble but the latest reports have him improving and looking forward to camp. His new deal is a 2-way contract for year one and a 1-way for the second season ($700,000 each time). His physical style and exceptional size would be very valuable on this roster. I think he makes the club (if healthy) again this fall and finally scores a goal. I suggest a drinking game among Oiler nation follow immediately: the ratio should be 6:1 at least for the first one.

Prediction for 08-09: 43gp, 3-7-10 (.232 per game).

I waited for an hour for someone else to comment, trying to avoid looking like I’m stalking you. Fuck it.

I still think the sit-down that needs to happen with Jacques is to tell him: Look kid, the spot is yours if you can out-goon Stortini all year.

With that whole “scoring a point” pressure gone, he could be effective. Him and Pouliot both need to be told to drop the top-6 aspiration and just grab a job. Any goddamn job.

How this player is still pointless is beyond me. I hope he gets it together b/c that would be a hell of an addition on the 4th line.

I say do the kid a favour: play him a couple minutes a game for the next 15 or so years, and punch his ticket into the HHOF.

  4. Sean says:

No wonder Stortini wanted more than 700k. He’s done nothing but outplay JFJ.

  5. Dennis says:

The worst kind of a case to try and solve is a headcase.

I like him on paper but the game always gets played on ice.

    Sean:

With the obvious exception being that he can be paid $70k a year in the AHL.

JFJ has so much to like… he’s the type of guy you’d hate to give up on, because if he ever translates his game to the NHL to what he did in the AHL, at worst he’s banging in 20 and sending multiple guys to the IR over the course of the season….

  7. Bill Needle says:

If you use past performance as a guide, then the reasonable expectations for Jacques should be 0-0-0.
    The minors await.

  8. Ribs says:

Josh Green, Brad Winchester, JF Jacques.

Reasonable Expectations: Dissapoint, traded for nothing.

    Yay.
