Eberle Dubbed

This is Jordan Eberle. He wins the “best photo by a drafted Oiler” contest hands down. Lordy he looks happy.

Anyway, Eberle impressed in camp with his puck skills and isn’t exactly sulking in junior.

In his first game back for 08-09, he waited until the 3rd period but went 1-1-2 in the Pats’ 4-3 loss to the PA Raiders. He had an assist on a goal at 18:49 of the third and then scored at 19:30.

Eberle scored 28 WHL goals as a 16-year old, and then blossomed to 42 in his draft year. If he plays enough this season (the year is underway and he’s a candidate for the WJ team) Eberle should be able to pop 50 in junior this year.

Scoring 50 goals at age 18 in the WHL isn’t an easy task. Last year no one scored 50 (Eberle was 4th in the league with his 42), and the last 18 year old to do it was Eric Fehr in 2003-04.

The thing that flabbergasts me… there’s absolutely nobody inflating him. Not one WHL vet on his wing (or at C, depending on where he’s actually playing) helping him to 40+ with similar numbers. You can’t say the same about the other 40 goal scorers in the dub last year.

If he scores 50 this year without help from the team at 18… lacking size and speed, even…

He’s just good. Damn good. Gagner good.

I also love that picture – he also sounded as excited as he looked in interviews shortly thereafter. In camp he was pretty fun to watch – not out of place at all until the big guys arrived. He just seems so smart out there already! Yep, high hopes for that one!

The last piece of the Pronger puzzle. I haven’t seen one thing not to like about this kid.

is it too much of a stretch to say that the oilers have drafted better than any other team in the last five years? how many teams can say they’ve snagged a great prospect in the first round every year since the lockout? I guess we didn’t have one the year we traded our pick for Roli, but thats beside the point. The team has been excellent the last few years in both drafting and developing prospects.

Yes. Montreal has drafted the following since 2003:

    Kostitsyn brothers
    Halak
    Lapierre
    Streit
    Chipchura
    Price
    Latendresse

The Sharks of San Jose have them beat as well, but maybe the Oilers are top five…. It’s pretty tough to judge recent drafts however.

Dammit. Fuhr hasn’t done anything noteworthy at the professional level.

Fuhr’s done plenty at the pro level. He’s a Hall of Famer, you know. ;)

Fehr, however, has a history of back injury, missing at least 60 games in the last couple of years to it, managing just 88 pro games in that time. He was a point-per-game player in the AHL in 2006-07, but hasn’t done anything useful (hasn’t been able to?) since.
