Mighty Dwight Makes the Grade
This is Dwight Helminen. He was a late pick by the Oilers in 2002 and I’ve followed his career because an HF poster named FunkyMoses used to update us and clearly felt he was a player despite some negatives (size, mostly).
Anyway, Helminen got the call to the show and played for Carolina last night. He had 9 shifts, 5 minutes on the ice and ended -1 for the evening.
Guy Flaming did an interview with Helminen in 2003.

Dwight Helminen! Who’s next, Michael Henrich? Jason Bonsignore?
Speaking of former Oilers:
Samsonov
Whitney
LaCouture
Helminen
“He’s a guy with a really good chance of being a NHL player.”
Hats off to scout Chris McCarthy, author of the above quote, and congratulations to the young man himself. Seven seasons later, that’s quite a haul. Whether Helminen turns out to have a long stay or a cup of coffee, the First NHL Game is a fantastic achievement.

Tim Thomas?!
raventalon:
Pitkanen too.
