Merry Christmas

by Lowetide

This is Jo-Anne and her husband in the mid-80’s, we were at the CKCK Radio (Regina) Christmas party. I remember that night, we had a lot of fun with friends. It also reminds me of a fun story I’ll tell you in a couple of minutes.

It’s early on Christmas morning 2022, kids are asleep, Ziggy and me keeping each other warm as our day begins. Jo-Anne has been gone for a little over one month, and the emotions remain raw. It’s also true that a 40-year conversation suddenly struck silent makes for lonely days. I am grateful for our years, enormously sad they ended and complelely aware that I was a lucky man to have been with such a fine person through the heart of my time here.

The year 2023 was such a good one leading into fall. Both kids found jobs they loved and people they enjoyed working with, and I got my book published. When I told Jo-Anne the publisher wanted to know if I planned to dedicate the book, she said I should honour my Mom. I did, plus Jo-Anne and the kids. It pleased her when she saw the book, and remains one of my favourite memories.

The kids miss their Mom terribly, even as they continue to do the things that made her so proud of them. We all find work to be a welcome relief from the reminders of home, I hope the days to come allow us to feel at home in the house we raised our children in. We want to thank the doctors, nurses and staff at Sturgeon Hospital in St. Albert and Foothills in Calgary for their wonderful care.

Thanks to everyone who reached out to our family in these last days, it meant the world to us and has helped us in the healing process.

Now, the story. The night that photo was taken, we had tickets booked for Mazatlan in early January. It was difficult to get Jo-Anne to commit to going, despite her love for warm weather, tequila and dancing. She told me “take Gord” referring to my friend of several years. Now I liked Gord, but the idea of spending time on the beach with him had less appeal than taking my wife on a vacation that involved many new things.

Jo-Anne had never flown on a plane, gone through customs, owned a passport. I’d flown only once before, and both of us had to get our first passports. We were new to the traveling experience.

So, we get on the plane, and she loves it! We arrive in Puerto Vallarta (you had to get off the plane to clear customs, then fly to Mazatlan) and we’re sitting in a small open-air bus, and she smiles, then laughs and says “can we get an extra week?” as I sat there stunned from the quick turnaround. She had a wonderful time in Mazatlan, the only downbeat was the flight home. We went back, next time to Puerto Vallarta and then Cancun twice, all in the years leading up to our children being born. My most vivid memories of that trip are Jo-Anne not wanting to leave, first Regina, and then Mexico. Makes me smile thinking about her sitting on our luggage at the airport, in the pose of “The Thinker” contemplating the weather that waited for her.

I miss her terribly, but if she were here today, she’d say “edit this before you publish” followed by “take care of yourself and the kids” and I will do my best to take care of the kids. In truth, it’s likely to be them taking care of me this Christmas, and maybe that’s the way it should be now.

I always end the Christmas post with a word about spending time with your family, and after this year double that and double it again. Thanks so much for the outpouring of sympathy and good thoughts.

If you’d like to do something for Jo-Anne, you can enjoy her favourite day. She was all about Christmas and family. Bless you and your family today. Merry Christmas!

Merry Christmas, LT. Frequented visitor, seldom commenter. Thoughts have been with you over the past few weeks. The heartache unspeakable, but you have carried on in a way that is quite inspiring. This blog holds a lot of value, to a lot of people. Wishing you a better 23, and cherish those great memories you made with your beautiful wife. All the best, Al.

Just came back and read this post LT. My MIL has an untreatable form of cancer that will end her life in the hopefully not so near future. We are hoping we have a few years left with her. We had a “normal” Christmas this year with her watching closely over our cooking decisions and offering her opinions, games and gifts.

I can’t imagine a Christmas without her but it’s hard to say if we even get another one.

I received your book for Christmas so enjoying picking through it. All the best to your family LT in this difficult time.

A beautiful post, LT.

Not a dry eye in this house.

Sending you and the family good vibes for the season, and Ziggy obvs.

Merry Christmas LT, and my sincere condolences. I echo Buddy’s comments below. This site is a tremendous gift to everyone here. I’ve been here since… ’06 or ’07 and it’s not necessarily the Oilers posts that keep me coming back. I think it’s the personal stories and posts that do it. They always give me pause for thought and reflection. Enjoy the holidays with your loved ones everyone and all the best in 2023!

Shane

Due to some obligations I wasn’t able to stop in yesterday but I was thinking about your family LT(visited with with some family friends that were spending their first Christmas without their son).

But as I told LT at Audrey’s the Christmas posts are my faves.

Happy holidays everyone.

The Trade Guy

My deepest sympathies

I don’t really follow the Oilers anymore but I still sometimes check the blog, and I think its mostly for when you write about your family and childhood. I always felt I could tell through your words how you truly felt about them and what they meant to you, and it would make me reflect on how I felt about my own family, but how you’d put it in words better than I could. I’ve valued that about you, and I thank you for that.

As I read this post this morning I could almost believe I can understand how you feel. I didn’t know Jo-Anne, but the love, respect and adulation your words about her over the years makes me feel as if I somehow do.

I feel your loss and wish you strength in the future.

Ozoil

Thoughts are with you LT. wonderful write up as usual. It’s crazy, even during Christmas we all find the time to stop by.

SK Oiler Fan

Wonderful post. Thank you for another year of this special outpost. Your writing often makes me reflect on how lucky many of us are. Hoping your memories of Jo-Anne bring some periods of joy to you and your family. Safe to say the LT community is thinking of you

Been looking forward to tomorrow for a while. First, Team Canada opens the Spengler vs. Sparta Praugue at noon (mountain) and then, more of those two nations when Team Canada opens the WJC vs. Czechia at 4:30. I’ll tune in to the former as much as a support for Dusty N. on the call than the game but it’ll be fun.

I thought I should mention, I finished your book a couple of weeks ago. Really enjoyed it, a really unique hockey book. I haven’t seen anyone take this approach before. It really shows how a haphazard approach to the draft results in the Decade of Darkness.

I think you, LT, and some of the other mathy types here are right that the best approach to the draft is more scientific, though even that is not foolproof. Humans are chancy

What a sad, but wonderful Christmas Day post. It brought a tear to my eye like I’m sure it did to others.

My very best wishes to you and your kids for the holidays and for a year of healing and time together in 2023

J-Bo

I love that picture of you and Joanne so much LT! Shoulder pads and stache are so classicly eighties, and hearing the story behind it even better. Your post today made me cry of course and made me admire your courage in writing.

I told my grade 5 class about you and your writing and how it is such a great example of why we learn to write. It brings us together, it entertains, it makes life better word by word. I also told them about Joanne and your family. I suggested if they remember that they might pray for you all.

I also told them about your book and how I hadn’t purchased it yet, but that I would as I was excited to read it. On Friday as I opened my teacher gifts of mugs and coffee gift cards, there was a copy of your book. One of my students who loves the Oilers himself, bought it for me for Christmas. I was so proud to have received such a thoughtful gift and am excited to read it over Christmas break.

Sending all my love this Christmas to you and your kids and sweet pup. Take care and know that we are all still thinking of you and praying when it comes to mind.

Buddy

Merry Christmas LT!

This site, and all the effort, time and energy that you continue to put into it, is such a tremendous gift to all the rest of us. I just want to say thank you so much for your generosity in doing this. This was a wonderful post today, this is obviously a difficult time, but I wish you and your kids a very happy Christmas.

Buddy Jr. gave me your book this year for Christmas. He didn’t know it was related to this blog that I occasionally post goofy remarks onto, he just somehow came across the book somewhere and knew I’d like it. Last year he gave me a McDavid jersey. Given that he grew up surrounded by Calgary Flames fans, I think he’s turning out okay.

And a very Merry Christmas to all my fellow Lowetideans!

Bulging Twine

according to tankathon the Oilers have the 14th overall pick this year with 1.5% odds of winning the lottery

Reja

As long as the Holland Clan stays away from the Kelfbom, Broberg and Sons glass factory will be alright come draft time.

OriginalPouzar

This also would have been the case in February this past season – didn’t work out that way mind you.

Bulging Twine

Merry Christmas everyone!

Thank you for being you LT. I am so sorry for the loss of your beloved Jo-Anne. I’ve thought of you often and your strength to continue providing community and a calm hand on the throttle.

I got your book for my Dad this Christmas and know he will soak into it. Thanks again for all your work Oilers related.

My wife and I just took a plunge in the Ocean in Port Renfrew. It was cold and perhaps a new tradition out on looking daughter will take part in when she gets older.

Much love to LT and the rest of the community that loves the Oil. Merry Merry and happy new year all.

jtblack

Thumbs up if you got LT’s book for x-mas or have read it already:

I got it for Xmas and Love it. Such an interesting deep dive on Oilers draft picks. I forgot how many picks you think are gonna make it and they just dont pan out.

Reja

Woody wakey wakey cornflaky why the Fuk did you start Skinner last game when you have a more mentally able Campbell at the end of the bench. I hate to break up the Pajama party but if you going to win a Cup it’s with the Pedigree American named Campbell.

W

Hindsight is a wonderful thing, now lay off the booze. Merry Xmas.

Reja

Woody better figure this out quickly. You should try a double Black Russian and then another it might loosen up that top button. Merry Christmas yourself and have a special New Year.

Reja

We are sitting outside the playoff pitchure with McDavid and Leon who if push came to shuff I would take as my number one Centre. Leon will get his cups I’m not so sure McDavid will.

Reja

I double Black Russian take that back McDavid is going to guide Edmonchuk too 2 Cups.

Oz

Christmas wishes Lowetide and family. May the New Year ease the pain of your loss.
Thank you for creating and maintaining this blog.

I logged on this morning first thing like I always do and especially Christmas morning as it’s my favorite post.

At first I wanted to write you a note but I just could not. Emotions got the better of me.

It is now hours later and I can finally bring myself to try.

LT, I do not know how you do it, but I thank you. I hope you and your kids can find some memories to smile about today and that each day gets better.

God bless you and yours and here is to 2023. It has to be better than 2022.

Diablo

Merry X-mas everyone!

We celebrated with my entire extended family, including my wife’s family who are on an extended vacation in Canada (they are from Ukraine).

Lots of presents opened. Lots of Merry had. Turkey is in the oven, and prep for Christmas dinner is on track.

Stopped for a moment to read your daily post Allan … you really are a treasure to our community of dedicated Oilers fans. I hope you and your family have a joyful and peaceful Christmas.

My favourite gift this year … my wife got me a copy of LT’s book! Can’t wait to dig in.

Seasons Greetings everyone!

geowal

Merry Christmas all! Visitors have left, Elf is on TV, and at some point I’ll crack open my new copy of LTs book which was unwrapped this morning!

WhenConnorSmiles

Best Wishes and Warmest Thoughts to you LT and yours. Precious memories are such treasures. As the waves of emotions wash over you, may there be much love and hugs today from loved ones and from us here virtually.

Reading LT’s book.

1993 DRAFT:
ARNOTT (1ST RD)
SATAN (5TH RD)
VYBORNY (2ND RD)

Amazing how well that draft was and that almost all the success the players had was on other teams.

Wierd time in Oil Country.

They also drafted Stadjuhar #16 and I thought he would be the next Paul Coffey. Didnt work out

Merry Christmas Allan and everyone else!

Thanks for hosting us at this outpost of the Al Gore for so many years. It’s been a little like a Seinfeld episode here in the comments section which means, well, it’s been awesome!

Reading your blog has been a little like the modern day version of checking the sports page in the newspaper everyday. Your writing has been apart of the daily routine for more people than you can probably imagine.

Happy Festivus!

Merry Christmas to you and your family. I’ve read this blog daily for many, many years. Love the stories of your family, it is clear you are a loving crew. Take care of yourself and each other. It is clear you know the value of holidays is the memories made, and may these memories bring you joy even in these hard times.

YKOil

Merry Christmas to you and yours. You tend to bring light with you my on-line friend, and that is a gift I am grateful for every day. Many thanks.

What a stunningly beautiful post. With all that you have gone through this year, you still find the time and strength to lift the rest of us up. Jo-Anne’s husband is a pretty special guy. Thank you.

prefonmich

LT, you and your family are in my thoughts this day. I feel like Jo-Anne is a friend of all who are blessed to enjoy your beautiful words each day. Thank you for sharing your wisdom and balanced perspective about our beloved team, but thank you even more for sharing your stories of family with us.
Always such a beautiful reminder of what matters most. May you smile at the memories of your wife, and mother to your kids and Ziggy, on this very special day.

Merry Christmas LT! Cherish the memories of Jo-Anne. Maybe you arent there yet but one day those memories will hurt less and become happy moments once again. Never met her but after all your posts over the years Ive developed an appreciation of her, your family and these Christmas moments. Looking forward to spending time with my family here shortly. Merry Christmas all!

Merry Christmas ‘kind sir’ let’s all enjoy the Improbable run the Oilers make this second half and Playoff.

Merry Christmas to everyone!

LT – these small glimpses into your life with Jo-Anne are a great read and a wonderful tribute. It has always been abundantly clear what Jo-Anne meant to you and your family and now, how much she will be missed.

My sympathies and well wishes are again with you and your family, knowing that days like today amplify that range of emotions dealing with the loss of someone so close.

Merry Christmas Al, wishing you much comfort and love with your kids and Ziggy. Thanks for the story, you do have a way with words! All the best in 2023!

Greetings from a retired guy in Mexico,

Allan, my day never feels complete until I have checked out what you have written both here and on the Athletic. Your wise words are always enlightening and inspiring. In the midst of hockey frustrations you remind us of more important matters. You especially help those of us who are far from Edmonton to still feel connected. Thanks from the bottom of my heart.

Your grief is shared and I pray you continue to receive many warm hugs from family and friends.

Feliz navidad LT. Your presence is our present, this and every year. Hope for more sunshine in your life ahead, you and your family deserve it. Been in Mexico for over two years after mom passed, CHristma has been lonely until now. Now I am unofficially “adopted” by a beautiful familia on my street (the Parera’s) and I am finding joy agan in the holidays. Turkey and karaoke until one AM…

Point is, sometimes in our time of greatest need, life gives us what we need from unexpected sources. Knowing your strength of character, openness and curiosity, I am certain great joy will return in days ahead for you and your family at some point. I am silently cheering for it and wish great things for all of you.

Salud!
