JDD Demoted

The Edmonton Oilers demoted Jeff Deslauriers to the AHL for a “conditioning” stint.

The Falcons could use the help, as they’ve been playing Devan Dubnyk into the ground.

Deslauriers has most definitely been jerked around through his career, from not having an AHL team and being forced into a secondary role to the current situation where Edmonton can’t decide what to do with their G situation.

The question about exactly what he is remains. The Oilers claim he’s a future starter, while the math suggests he’s something less than an NHL calibre starting goalie.

That article of Gregor’s over at ON still raises more questions than answers. If JDD is truly being asked about by other GMs… why is he still an Oiler?

My guess is because our starting goalie is 82 years old and is liable to get arrested for cracking someone over the head with his stick sometime soon and our backup/starting-calibre goalie probably didn’t enjoy the short leash this season and won’t be returning.

But the question is still relevant, why do we have both JDD and Garon languishing? Pick one, and move the other out of town… if JDD has interest then Garon should have interest.

If JDD is truly being asked about by other GMs… why is he still an Oiler?

Perhaps the 4th round pick being offered in return isn’t enough.

  4. Coach pb9617 says:

Washington needs a goalie, so does Atlanta.

Garon has to be attractive to both of them, right?

Detroit needs a tender too :)

  5. oilerdago says:

Coach, obviously Garon has not been attractive so far. Either the Oilers are asking for more than a bag of pucks for him or no one believes that he’s capable of doing the job.

Remember, even Ray Ferraro said it a couple of weeks back that Garon has been a disappointment.

Still, I’ve got to believe the Oilers really think they can get this resolved in the next two weeks. Given that, it would not shock me if Garon simply gets waived.

  6. bookie says:

JDD has the crappy job of being an insurance policy in case the Oilers find themselves without a goalie after this season. He is as likley to become a number 1 with the Oilers as Jussi Markkanen, Ty Conklin, or Mike Morrison (wait a minute…) So, he may get a shot, or he may not. I hope he turns into a superstar!

Anyway with that said, for a goalie who will likley never play in the NHL, $550,000 for a season of being somebody’s insurance is something a lot of minor leaguers would have loved to have gotten before going on to work at the local car dealership.

  7. bookie says:

I should clarify when I said “never play in the NHL”, I simply meant that he will likely never be an established number one or backup…but that does not mean its impossible. Rather, he faces long odds like every up and commer because every year there are dozens of similar goalies looking for a spot and only a few spots open.

  8. oilerdago says:

I could see JDD being a decent back up – good for 20-25 games per season. For that kind of money, you take it.

What becomes interesting is next year. Do the Oilers have to go sign a free agent goalie or do they bring Roli back again in the hope that he can do what Hasek did for Detroit?

And before you hammer me, I am not saying Roli is as good as Hasek, I’m just saying he gives him the same number of games (not quality).

He’s certainly making the case for another contract right now.

  9. Muller says:

If JDD was any good he would have been in the show long ago. Trade him, Lets move forward with Roloson and Garon.

  10. Oilmaniac says:

I’ve been thinking along similar lines oilerdago.. that the org is probably considering keeping ol Roli on for the coming year, despite the rational doubts attached to his age…

But eventually this situation has to snap, the tension will only continue to grow, and if the org waits until after the break point then they’ll be in a worse bargining position..

It would seem that ‘under sized forward’ is a position of depth, but not many of them are in the catagory of reg contributor (without serious man love attached) so i dont know how the org makes a ‘waddell’ type offer for a tender…

  11. Asiaoil says:

All this “someone told Gregor that JDD is hot stuff” is so much BS. Ya gotta do something better than that to make the pump work – but the Oilers are just peddling smoke and mirrors with JDD.

I won’t bother with all the very good reasons that JDD is not worth worrying about – laid it all out a dozen times before. Best response I got to the facts was a lot of rose colored glasses talk that he could be the next Dan Ellis – and by the way – what’s his SP this year :)

  12. oilerdago says:

Oilmaniac, I think you’ve hit the conumdrum with the organization. The best under-sized forwards you can’t or won’t trade yet they have the most value. The only one is could be packaged is Nilsson.

And if Cole REALLY IS turning a corner playing w/Gagner do you trade him now?

Tough decisions unless Waddell is that dumb.

  13. Coach pb9617 says:

What becomes interesting is next year. Do the Oilers have to go sign a free agent goalie or do they bring Roli back again in the hope that he can do what Hasek did for Detroit?

    Manny Fernandez.

  14. Jonathan says:

    Manny Fernandez.

    Seconded.

  15. Coach pb9617 says:

And if Cole REALLY IS turning a corner playing w/Gagner do you trade him now?

If they begin to turn the corner together, obviously not, but mostly because it allows Pisani and Cogs to run together.

    Penner – Horcoff – Hemsky
    Cogliano – Reasoner – Pisani
    Nilsson – Gagner – Cole
    Moreau – Brodziak – Stortini

  16. Kris says:

    Coach:

There’s no Poo in your lineup.

  17. oilerdago says:

So Minnesota is going to sign Backstrom before the end of the season?

  18. Kris says:

    Please exchange reason for poo.

  19. Coach pb9617 says:

With Roloson, Fernandez, Labarbera, Gerber, Emery, and Biron and even Garon all available, I think that goaltending is the least of their concerns right now.

  20. Oilmaniac says:

I dont agree with you often Kris, but in this case..

The reasoner train has left the station.. and poo finally looks to be coming about, with some consistancy to boot…

  21. shepso says:

@Coach: unless you know something about reasoner coming back from ATL, you must be thinking poo in between cogs and fernie, with Nilsson flanking Gags and Cole? Or is this entire thing just another load of speculation involving the movement of (insert french canadian goalie from the three headed monster here) and Nilsson just to get Marty back? I don’t know how much I love that deal…in fact, I don’t like it at all.

  22. Coach pb9617 says:

OM – by “Reasoner” I mean a center capable of avoiding embarrassment in the circle and being somewhat adept on the penalty kill.

It’s like “Conkanen” refers to a mediocre goalie tandem.

  23. hunter1909 says:

What’s with the obsession with former and not particularly even good Oilers?

Who can forget that inimitable Rem Murray “feel good” story in the 2006 playoffs?

Now we get to read how Weight and bloody Guerin are possibly headed back here.

Okay, I get it. Deflects heat from the “coach”.

  24. HBomb says:

If we’re bringing in a veteran center, I hope they shoot higher than Marty Reasoner in the trade market.

  25. boopronger says:

hbomb – you mean marty sakic right?

  26. Coach pb9617 says:

If we’re bringing in a veteran center, I hope they shoot higher than Marty Reasoner in the trade market.

Shoot much higher and a significant piece has to go, but again, “Reasoner” is simply a descriptor here.

Though, like I said in the GDT, I’m not at all averse to Reasoner and Armstrong.

  27. HBomb says:

boopronger: Reasoner’s an OK fourth liner, but we’ve got a decent one of those in Brodziak.

3rd line, rather than see Reasoner over his head there, I prefer Pouliot getting those minutes because IF he can be Guy Carbonneau for this squad over the next few years, they’re better off for it. If it’s a development year, he needs to be playing those minutes.

However, if the Oilers think they can make it in the playoffs and be more than a speed bump for the Winged Wheel or Shark-chow…they need a 3rd line center that’s a CLEAR upgrade on Pouliot. Think John Madden or something of the like.

  28. HBomb says:

Coach: somehow I can’t see them bringing Reasoner back specifically via trade.

They could have had him for the cost of his salary over the summer, but let him walk. To give up anything beyond a marginal prospect (think Paukovich or something of the like) to get him back here would look bad on Lowe, and we know how this organization operates in THAT regard.

Imagine if the Oilers gave up Schremp for a rental of Reasoner, for example (that might be what Atlanta looks for). The media in town might just question that, and well, I think that the reaction on HFBoards might be nothing short of a train-wreck.

Are you purposefully ignoring that I’m using it as a descriptor?

  31. HBomb says:

    But a hilarious train wreck

Indeed, I’d have trouble resisting the urge to check out HF after such a trade, and I NEVER go there.

  32. Coach pb9617 says:

Someone give me some trade value guesstimations on Garon right now.

  33. HBomb says:

Are you purposefully ignoring that I’m using it as a descriptor?

Nope, not at all. Things is, I’ve heard it suggested in a few places by a few people as a real possibility, and even seeing it as a descriptor worries me a bit.

I’ll get genuinely concerned when the idea shows up in one of Matheson’s Sunday columns.

  34. HBomb says:

Someone give me some trade value guesstimations on Garon right now.

“B” level prospect or a 4th round pick max. I’d say he’s got “zero value”.

If the Oilers were smart…they’d play Garon a bit and hope he gets it going, and then pull the “pump and dump” move and trade Roloson at peak value. This team is likely first round fodder this year, and I don’t think that even with Roloson playing very well, that it’s smart to bring him back next year, even on a one year deal.

Of the three guys IN the organization, Garon’s the best bet as a “starter” for the period from fall 2009 to spring 2012 (i.e. the end of the Hemsky contract). That being said, I’m starting to worry that the “unaddressed black hole” on this roster next fall (like in fall 2005) is going to be goaltending. This team seems to have a habit of going into camp with at least one major question mark…..

  35. Coach pb9617 says:

Nope, not at all. Things is, I’ve heard it suggested in a few places by a few people as a real possibility, and even seeing it as a descriptor worries me a bit.

It’s a tough spot. The guys that can fill the second line role are all way too much against the cap unless you can jettison Moreau at the same time. Everyone loves to toss out Fisher, but he stinks and commits highway robbery on a nightly basis when you look at that contract. Handzus comes up, but he’s a better LW lately.

Even if you come up with a pure checker with some offensive ability to slot between Cogs and Pisani, it’s going to cost you.

I say take a shot on “Sillinger/Reasoner/junky 3rd line center” and give up next to nothing, or try to hit a home run with a guy like “Horton” and give up some significant pieces, i.e. Nilsson, Grebs. The other alternative is to get the junky center and get an outscoring RW to replace Cole next year, i.e. “Reasoner” + “Armstrong”.

In between will put this roster in cap lock.

  36. hunter1909 says:

The way the Oilers do business reminds me of the “SEE THE ROCK AND ROLL HALL OF FAME” tent during Klondike Days.

It’s like they’re talking to a bunch of idiots, the way they talk down to people.

  37. Coach pb9617 says:

And now for something completely different.

    This video is hilarious.

  38. HBomb says:

    Coach:

    A few things:

    1) I’d be getting rid of Moreau and Staios yesterday if I were GM, and sinking that money into the top 9F and 4D. Cheap out on the 4th line and 3rd d-pair.

    2) Fisher’s good, but not 4.2 million second line centre good. Anytime someone compares him to Horcoff, I die a bit inside…not even close.

    3) Despite what some would say, I hope the Oilers don’t close the door on bringing Cole back for around the same dollars next year, especially if he develops some chemistry with Gagner and forms the genesis of a 2nd line to eat the softies for the next couple years. Failing that, a guy like Armstrong is a nice replacement.

    4) I like Sillinger a heck of a lot more than Reasoner. A couple weeks ago, in a game thread, I explicitly suggested the idea of trying to pry the duo of Sillinger and Jeff Tambellini out of the Islanders to improve the bottom six.

  39. Dennis says:

HB: things only look “bad” for Lowe if someone talks smack about him in the media. Lowe doesn’t give a fuck what the fans say about him – unless he’s ordering Smyth fans into the Gitmo Room – but he knows the real way to avoid any kind of message being spread is to control the media.

It was just today that Jones decided to trumpet the Souray signing again, after having not bothered to talk about it last year when we lost a year due to his propensity to injury, so I doubt Lowe’s worried about how the assets shake out if or when he re-acquired Reasoner.

And, FTR, I have a hard time believing there’s substantial interest in JDD. I Am pleased that the Tambellini and Olcyzk are utilizing a loophole to blow the dust off him – I won’t credit Lowe with this because if he was too dumb to know that cap was rising then I doubt he could find a loophole in the CBA:D – but I don’t think we’ll see a firestorm of Deslauries trade talk while he’s in SF either.

It looks like the Oilers have decided their going the Roli way and now it’s Garon that’s gonna be moved. The latter put up some good numbers last year but Pete Peeters saw something he didn’t like and now it’s back to Square -1 for Garon and Roli’s calling the ball 30 times a game.

The only thing that might derail that plan is if the Wings offer enough to lure Roli away.

  40. HBomb says:

The only thing that might derail that plan is if the Wings offer enough to lure Roli away.

Roloson and Grebeshkov for Darren Helm and Jonathan Ericsson. Done.

Current point of discussion on 1260: Jason Spezza and the idea of the Oilers dealing Horcoff+ for him. I cannot say I’d be in favor of such a move. The top line, as has been discussed, isn’t the issue right now, and IF you’re going to upgrade the top line, LW is where you look (Horcoff, past Hemsky, is a slam dunk as the 2nd most legit 1st liner on this team, IMO).

  41. Bank Shot says:

Hopefully JDD can help the Falcons get back on track. They’ve ben nothing short of terrible this season.

  42. oilerdago says:

Horcoff + for Spezza? Gimme a break, our PK is lousy as it is – let’s just make it worse shall we?

Seriously, when’s the last time Spezza killed a penalty – Squirts?

But I think it’d be hilarious to see MacT work with him on the proper technique for blocking a shot. (big time sarcasm there)

  43. Alice says:

Ok, since this Reasoner character doesn’t exist yet, and armchair QB is the game of the day:

    Penner – Horcoff – Hemsky
    Pouliot – Gagner – Cole
    Nilsson – Cogliano – Pisani
    Moreau – Brodziak – Stortini

    Gagner Cole stay together
3L might be able to counter-punch, faceoffs are still an issue but is Piasani an option to take draws? He seems capable of most else.

Poo has a chance to light the lamp, instead of people complaining he’s not a good enough checker.

And like most else, this setup depends on Ethan batting cleanup.

  44. knighttown says:

I was thinking of Darren Helm recently too. The Wings have a great deal of success with Swedes and Nilsson is a guy that would produce on a team like Detroit so would a Nilsson for Helm trade make sense? We cull the herd of small, skilled guys and pick up a speedy, energetic 3rd/4th line penalty killer with youth.

  45. Kris says:

    RE: JDD

I think Bankshot’s comment above is quite insightful. This conditioning stint might be more about improving Springfield than we think. K-Lo made a bunch of comments regarding the trades for Corazinni (sp?) and Potulny, saying that Springfield’s success is tied to the Oilers success.

On another topic, sorry to threadjack, but…

The idea of a Horcoff +, for Spezza deal doesn’t seem to make much sense for either team.

Ottawa needs to reshuffle the whole team, make a number of deals. My guess is they want somebody younger than Horc in order to build a contender for next year and a real winner for the year after. They have the assests do that, IMO.

Edmonton sure doesn’t need to get softer and more error prone.

  46. HBomb says:

Interesting, but I’d bet Detroit would turn Nilsson into an 80 point 2nd line LW. Just watch. They’d find a way.

  47. gary b says:

Are you purposefully ignoring that I’m using it as a descriptor?

Might i suggest a slight ‘reworking’ of the descriptor, to elimate confusion?

    how about… Reason’r.

also works well as a verb:

Q: “How do we improve my faceoff percentage?”

    A: “Reason’r.”

  48. Jonathan says:

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: if it’s Horcoff+ for Spezza, and the + isn’t ridiculous, that trade gets made.

I very much doubt it’s on the table, but Spezza is too talented a player to pass on.

  49. Coach pb9617 says:

//That article of Gregor’s over at ON still raises more questions than answers. If JDD is truly being asked about by other GMs… why is he still an Oiler?//

Because he is the only goaltender who is signed for next season? He will be the backup next year. Why create a “hole”. His upside, although questionable, is still undetermined. Might as well find out what upside there is before trading him.

Jonathan: if the + is, say Grebeshkov and Schremp, sure, they’d be foolish not to think about it.

But if they’re looking for Gilbert plus something else in addition to Horcoff, I think the Oilers tell them to go “pound sand”.

  52. Oilmaniac says:

    Alice:

Those are some decent lines, imo.. I like the parity between the 2nd & 3rd lines..

    Penner – Horcoff – Hemsky
    Pouliot – Gagner – Cole
    Nilsson – Cogliano – Pisani
    Moreau – Brodziak – Stortini

    a utility shooter/passer/checker w a speedy shooter w a playmaker

neither the 2nd or 3rd is well matched for the toughs, but i guess thats the job of the first line… plus nils and cogs have good chemistry at times so both lines are a threat, with gives each a chance to out-chance opposing lines…

except, of course, the face off situation is still unresolved with this deck chair shuffle…

oh, and im thinking the jury may still be out wrt cole.. a good second half could give the org confidence that he just needed to get settled (but isnt his wife still out in NC, and that doesnt equal a player being happy for the long term.. tough situ there)
